this happened after midnight on 100th avenue in glendale in prince george's county. news 4's megan mcgrath has been on the scene all morning long and joins us with more. megan, good morning to you. >> reporter: the investigation here on the scene has wrapped up, but police are still looking for the two suspects, the two men who were seen running away after this home invasion and shooting. it began to unfold after mid nate. two men, according to police, made their way into the house on 100th avenue here in glendale. inside the home were two residents, a man and a woman. there was some kind of an altercation, shots were fired, and the male resident was struck in the torso. we're told that he was transported to an area hospital where he's listed in critical condition. now it's unclear whether the two suspects took anything from the home but right after all of this happened witnesses saw them making their escape on foot and they're still at-large. reporting live, megan mcgrath, news 4. eun, back to you. to the live desk now, melissa mollet has breaking

news. the death toll has now risen to 400. of course that's 7.7 magnitude quake hit on tuesday. rescue teams still trying to reach victims. road conditions hampering the efforts. survivors in need of food, water, and medical supplies. new this morning the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is praising a resolution that forces syria to get rid of its chemical weapons. the u.n. security council could vote as early as today on that measure. the resolution would require syria to let inspectors have full access to its chemical weapons stockpile. it does not threaten any military action if the country doesn't comply. the u.s. says this is still a major break through in efforts o end syria's civil war. this is the first time since the syria conflict began two and a half years ago that the security council has imposed binding obligations on syria. binding obligations of any kind. >> the five permanent members of the u.n. security council

support the resolution. it is now up to the council's ten nonpermanent members to approve it. we will keep a close eye on the showdown -- the shutdown showdown today on capitol hill. we're expecting the senate to vote to remove a provision from a government funding bill that would defund the affordable care act. house speaker john boehner says he and his colleagues won't accept any legislation that doesn't take away money from the controversial health care law. congress must reach a deal on a spending bill by the end of monday or part of the government will shut down. 6:04 right now. we're working to find out who now has the body of navy yard gunman aaron alexis. the d.c. medical examiner tells nbc news an autopsy has been comple completed and the body released. it won't say who claimed the body or what was discovered in the autopsy. police say the 34-year-old government contractor was shot to death while exchanging gunfire with officers. the fbi says alexis believed electromagnetic waves had been controlling him for months before the rampage. later today a popular softball

coach and die hard ravens fan killed at the navy yard will be honored at his wake. the viewing for mike ridgell held at 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00. he was a former maryland state trooper and was that security guard aaron alexis encountered. frederick community college was given the all clear by police late last night after a suspicious package was found on campus. police and bomb technicians were at the scene for hours making sure everything was completely safe before giving the all clear. the buildings were evacuated while officials investigated. george washington has a monument, a city and state named in his honor but never had a presidential library until today. hundreds of people will head to the grand opening. the 45,000-square-foot facility will include letters and

in news for your health now scientists discovered two antidepressants that could treat a deadly form of lung cancer. the drugs were tested on human cells in mice with small cell lung cancer. both medications killed cancer

a little boy being pulled from the rubble after a building collapsed in mumbai. you see a woman and later a man. right now crews working to pull more people out. so far they've pulled more than a dozen out of the five-story apartment building. you can see that huge amount of concrete. three people were killed, up to 90 could be trapped. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. and we're following a developing story as well involving the deadly mall attack in kenya. police and security workers there setting off controlled explosionses in that shopping a of nairobi. they are trying to get all the bombs planted by terrorists out before studying the crime scene today. the al qaeda group killed three people yesterday near the somali border. they say the attacks will go on until all kenyan troops are out

of somalia. new this morning, a united airlines flight on its way to seattle after making an emergency medical landing in boise, idaho. flight 1603 was on its way to seattle from houston when a crew member suffered a heart attack. that crew member was taken to the hospital shortly after landing. his or her name and condition is not the known at this time. the story of luck out of texas as a gunman tried to shoot up a restaurant filled with people but he couldn't because his weapon malfunctioned. take a look at the security footage. the man stormed into the front of the restaurant with the gun in the air. you can see that here. he points it if he first person. pulls the trigger. nothing happened. he tried the same thing again, the same problem. he tries to shoot someone for a third time. still can't get that gun to fire. >> he clears his weapon, drops the magazine. it doesn't work again. that's when he leaves outside the restaurant. so he went into the parking lot there, got the gun to fire. he went back inside only to have

the same malfunction every time he pointed it at a person. police said they were thankful for the malfunctioning gun. it allowed them enough time to get to the restaurant and arrest that guy on the spot. >> we should hear from iran's new president, hassan rowhani will hold a news conference in new york. ir iranian diplomats meet with the nuclear watchdog. the they've met several times but this will be the first meeting since rowhani became iran's president. yesterday secretary of state john kerry met with iran's foreign minister. those were the highest level discussionses between t between years. they will hold more meetings in new york, including diplomats from brazil, south korea. they will hold a meeting to discuss syria at the u.n. the head of the nsa is downplaying reports many of the agency's employees have been abusing their authority. still, its inspector general says nsa employees eavesdropped on family and friends a dozen times over the past decade.

the practice is known as loveint, gathering information on love interests. they have two open investigations right now into allegations of misuse of authori authority. >> right now crews are trying to restore power to a which issy part of new york's rail system. it won't do much good for this morning's commute. a busy stretch of track between manhattan and new haven has been mostly out of service since wednesday because of a power outage. our nbc station in new haven says limited power could restore by this weekend. the metro north line transports tens of thousands of riders each d day, many of whom have to find different ways to get around. the $100 million heading to detroit to stave off bankruptcy was already going there. the white house's economic team said the grants are not new money but money already allocated to the motor city including $65 million for blight eradication and tearing down vacant commercial building.

detroit is about $18 billion in debt. a former nfl player says hundreds may soon face charges tore trashing his vacation home. police arrested six people they say broke into his home naer albany, new york, and threw a massive labor day party. he says one of the people charged was a young man he took care of when he was homeless. he claims that was the person who organized the party. he posted pictures of the young people on social media sites, and that angered some of those teens' parents. the farewell tour for the best baseball player ever is bringing tears to the eyes of fans around the country. >> how is this for drama? >> mayriano rivera played his last game. andy pettitte and team captain derek jeter had the honor of taking him out of the game in the ninth inning. you can see the floodgates

under the cloud cover locally we have it generally in the low to mid-50s. students at the bus stop this morning it should be cloudy around the metro area with a light wind. it will stay in the low 50s the next hour or so but between 7:00 and 8:00 upper 50s and then near 60 by 9:00 this morning and temperatures around the region as we get to noontime around much of the region should be near 70 degrees with some sunshine breaking out. and then mostly sunny by mid to late afternoon and by then we'll have our temperatures into the mid-70s and then overnight tonight will be clear for all the high school football games tonight and then by dawn on saturday down to the mid-50s. high school, college games should be great. outdoor activities for hiking, biking kayaking, highs reaching the mid-70s is on saturday and again on sunday lots of sunshine. after knonoon highs around 80. storm team 4 seven-day outlook,

i'm back in ten minutes with another hometown forecast. danella, good morning. hour how is traffic? still checking i-95. first we'll start with an accident in the hov lanes. this is as you are traveling in the lorton area. you can see a live look from chopper 4. so as you're traveling you're going to see your right shoulder lane blocked as well as your right lane. the left lane will get you by. the second is thing that i-95 is dealing with besides the h 0 ov delays here is a problem in the main line. so earlier they had an accident. it's cleared, near fairfax county parkway. seeing volume at 234 northbound. late clearing construction a moment ago. it was still blocking the right lane. the looks like it's out of the roadway. your drive time from quantico 34 minutes to reach the beltway. that's pretty slow for a friday. danella, thank you. take a look at this point video.

it is not a bird or a plane. it is a meteor. this was taken from a royal mounted police dash camera in alberta, canada. the officer said that he, quote, freaked out when he saw the meteor. sounds about right. the we're talking about flying objects, you might see a bl blimp hovering over the area the next couple of weeks operated by the navy and it will be testing mapping equipment in many of the areas in our region that have restri restricted airspace. it will be over government sites for about two weeks and then it will head into virginia. well, if you're trying to fly away for the holidays, now is the time to book, but you might want to brace yourself if you're planning to fly. all those frequent flier points might not be as helpful as you want them to be. experts say when it's all said and doon, those acquired miles might not make much of a difference. >> once you add up all the fees, sometimes you might as well buy the ticket outright. >> according to experts the airlines with the fewest fees are southwest and jetblue. if you don't want to fly either

new this morning, a man is in critical condition after a home invasion in prince george's county. we're told two men meant into the home on 100th avenue. fired shots. a man and woman were inside. the male victim was shot in the chest. police say two people were spotted running away from the home right after that happened. plus, following breaking news in india, three people killed when a building collapsed in mumbai. we've shown you the rescues happening from the live desk. we'll pass along updates as we receive that. melissa mollet from the live de desk. some brand-new video in of the bus bombing in pakistan. this morning 17 people killed, dozens hurt. that bus carrying government workers heading home at the end

of the workweek. witnesses saying the back end of the bus was ripped open and everyone was thrown to the side. at this point this morning no one has claimed responsibility. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. and this friday morning off to a pretty crisp start. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here to help you get ready for the day. some low clouds rolling out of the north and east the last few hours. these low clouds cruising in from the north and east and heading southwest but elsewhere much of the region across northern virginia, the shenandoah valley, into the mountains. that's where the chillier temperatures are located into the 40s. closer to washington, under the cloud cover. the low to mid-50s, the nearby neighborhoods as well as the bay, the northern neck, the eastern shore, and we'll have temperatures hold iing steady i the low 50s to mid-50s for another hour or so. then by 8:00 should be in the upper 50s and then by 10:00 the low to mid-60s. sunshine should be breaking out

by then. partly sunny by noontime and near 70. sun rises at 7:01. hometown forecast, the district of columbia from adams morgan to anacostia, by noontime near 70 degrees and partly sunny. a look at your friday in about ten minutes. danella, good morning. how is traffic? good morning, tom. for folks traveling in charles county. yesterday morning we did see an accident for folks traveling along 301. it's cleared today. no accidents, easy commute from charles county heading northbound to prince george's county on your local roads. heres what's happening. northbound i-95 taking the exit ramp for the inner loop of the beltway. chopper 4 blocking the right lane. you'll have to get to the left to get by and you are at the scene delays. the other incident i-95 northbound, this was as you make up way past 234, the right lane was just blocked for road work. that road work is clear. so as you continue northbound in the main lanes, you are slow.

hov lanes at lorton, right lane is blocked in your hov lanes as well. just a slow trip on i-95. eun and aaron, over to you. danella, thank you. 6:32 is your time now. a better sense today of how likely a government shutdown really is. we expect the senate to vote to remove a provision from a government funding bill that would defund the affordable care act. tracie potts is live on capitol hill now with more. >> reporter: eun, good morning. that means yes on a budget from the senate and yes on pay iing r the health care bill, health reform, the affordable care act. that's something that would likely get rejected on the house side. the upshot of all that, house republicans said they're working overtime. john boehner says his chamber will work over the weekend. they have sessions scheduled on saturday and sunday to try to come up with some sort of budget compromise with the senate to avoid the shutdown but already the number two democrat in the

senate is saying even if they work overtime over the weekend by the time they turn all that around there may not be time to get an official budget in place even if it is temporary by the midnight deadline monday. that would mean a shutdown as of tuesday morning, lawmakers still trying to work this out but federal government employees already preparing for closing their doors on tuesday if necessary. eun? all right, tracie potts live on capitol hill for us. thank you. the year long 150th anniversary festivities. will see a surprising demonstration. the national park service has given a permit for a maryland-based ku klux klan group to hold af event at the national. they have a responsibility to make that land available for any citizen to express their right to freedom of speech. it will be held in the afternoon october 5. a group of teens from hyattsville is recovering after a car driven by one of their

classmates hit them in a parking lot near the school. yesterday afternoon we showed you the dramatic scene outside northwestern high school in prince george's county. eight junior rotc students were practicing formation when the car plowed into them. the driver of the car was a 19-year-old classmate. the driver stayed on the scene and was charged with negligent driving and driving without required supervision. he doesn't have his license is yet, just a learner's permit. this morning a prince george's county mother is demanding answers after she says her son was lost for an hour after school. >> shannon muller's 5-year-old son attends class at mt. rainier elementary school. she says a substitute teacher put marcus on a school bus to go home instead of his daycare van on tuesday. >> marcus was dropped off on a busy corner of 34th street and rhode island avenue. he wandered for a while until he knocked on a stranger's door asking for help to call his dad. >> and just to get a call that, you know, it was an emergency because they can't find my

5-year-old son. >> she says the l school sent home withdrawal papers for marcus and his brother. she says the school always knew the children were not technically in the right school zone but that wasn't a problem until now. we contacted prince george's county public schools. we're told they're looking into the situation. 6:35 now. d.c. fire chief kenneth ellerbe will not face charges after being accused of attack iing a firefighter. prosecutors say they don't have enough evidence to charge him with anything. a firefighter said he grabbed a phone from his hand and hurt him at the scene of a burning ambulance last month. he says he simply asked for the phone and got it voluntarily. terry mcauliffe picked up a key endorsement in the race for governor of virginia. they are backing the democratic candidate. mcauliffe's support for mcdonnell's funding bill played a major role in the decision. the chamber of commerce commended mcauliffe for vowing to veto any attempt to end

virginia's right-to-work laws. >> march 23, 2010, obama care is signed into law. minutes later, attorney general ken cuccinelli filed suit in federal court to stop it. >> you may see this commercial on tv in the coming days. ken cuccinelli's campaign just launched the ad which criticizes terry mcauliffe for supporting the affordable care act. cuccinelli has been one of the most vocal critics of the health care law but this is one of his first commercials to focus on the issue. today a big donation that promises to make america's front yard a little greener. john deere is donating $400,000 worth of lawn care equipment to the national park service including things like mowers that run on alternative fuel and used to help restore and maintain the national mall. the company will officially hand over the equipment this morning during a ceremony on the mall. new turf will be planted next year. a consumer alert for toyota drivers now. the car company is recalling more than 600,000 of its most popular minivans.

we just got our hands on the test results to find how effective crash avoidance systems really are. the insurance institute for highway safety tested dozens of vehicles with forward collision warning or auto brake systems. seven of them earned the group's highest safety rating. they are the cadillac ats sedan and srx suv, the mercedes c-class sedan, subaru legacy and outback wagon and volvo s-60 sedan and xc-60 suv. letters and numbers. lots of them. >> it's hard to get through it all. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here. we had spectacular weather. let's keep it going, tom. >> under this cloudy sky, the temperature right now at reagan national is at 62.

new this morning, a man is in the hospital in critical condition after a violent home invasion. this happened after midnight on 100th avenue in glendale. prince george's county police say two men entered the home while two people were inside. one man shot in the torso and was rushed to the hospital. they're looking for two men seen leaving the area. it is not clear if they took anything from the home. new this morning, frederick community college has been given the all clear by police after a suspicious package was found on campus. the scene was okay short ly before 11:00. officers evacuated some of the surroundings buildings as bomb tec techses and police investigated. some heroes of the mass shooting will be honored this morning. dozens of paramedics are receiving awards for courage amidst the chaos. derrick ward joins us live with more on the honor. derrick? >> reporter: good morning, eun. that ceremony takes place in about two hours at the fire and

training academy in southwest. the ceremony will honor more than 30 from the fire and ems department who were among the first medical responders to the september 16 hootings. the gunman be and 12 others were killed. 8 to 14 were injured. the firehouses in the immediate area were the first to respond along with federal fire and ems units from the naval district of washington. of course in the aftermath there has been word or talk, at least, of investigations looking into allegations some of the communications didn't work and some of the firehouses may have been understaffed. that is for folks who do that sort of thing to sort out later today is about honoring those who responded regardless of any adversity they had to deal with. live from the navy yard, derrick ward, news 4. back to you.

the navy will update us on how they're helping employees and families cope with the shooting. william frieench will hold a roundtable with reporters this morning and give a tour of the emergency family assistance center at the navy yard. he will help us understand what kind of care and services they're providing. employees have visited the center more than 4,700 since the shooting. family and friends will attend the funeral for a prince william county high school student, kenny diaz. 12 people are now under arrest in connection with his murder. police charged four of diaz's friends with attempted robbery. investigators say he and his friends tried to rob 19 ye-yeard diandra samuels as pay back for her robbing one of their friends and was connected to drug deals. police believe samuels stabbed diaz to death in a public park on saturday. the u.n. security council could vote as early as today on a resolution forcing syria to get rid of its chemical weapons.
