mccain and lindsay graham have already responded. they call the resolution more hope than reality, arguing it won't change anything on the ground in syria. >> also a lockdown. it has been lifted. that base was locked down for an hour after reports of an unknown man with a gun. police searched that area around the base in southeast d.c. they didn't find anyone. >> the news 4 team has learned that the navy was recently seeking security up grades at the security yard. it canceled the plans after the shooting that killed 12 workers. scott mcfarlane received a copy of a navvy contract dated september 13. the upgrades included a panic alert system for building 197, the site of the shootings. others are orders in part due to the renovations of building 197. a building official calls the

shutdown. he called on republicans in the house to stop playing politics with the nation's fnlss. >> you throw a wrench into the gears of our economy at a time when those gears have gained some traction. that's why many republican senators and many republican governors have urged republicans to knock it off, pass a budget, and move on. >> house speaker john boehner said the president's grand standing for the media won't bring congress any sloeser to a resolution. aides say the speaker and president have not speaken on the phone at all this week. >> the white house released this photo tonight showing president obama on the phone with the iranian president. it's the first time the leaders of the two nations have had direct contact since the carter administration. during that call, the two discusses iran's nuclear program. president obama says he believes a deal can be reached to prevent iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. a gun show in virginia this weekend could draw more people

than usual from outside the commonwealth. it's happening at the dulles expo center in chantilly. tonight, shomari stone found out why some folks are crossing state lines to attend. >> a little built overwhelmed because it's such a rush. >> elgin is rushing, doing last-minute shopping before the new maryland gun law goes into effect next tuesday. he lives there. >> the ban is going to wipe out a lot of guns. and this particular style of gun that i had is going to be banned. >> elgin bought an ar-10 assault weapon like this one. he's at the dulles expo center in shan tilchantilly to by maga. >> i wanted to make sure i had something i won't have an opportunity to buy again. >> maryland legislators passed the strictest gun laws. people who own them are allowed to keep them, grandfathered in. it also requires fingerprints to

buy guns. in maryland next tuesday, you cannot buy 20-round magazines like this one right here, but you can buy ten rounds or less. >> i think that they're hurting the wrong person by changing the laws. >> tonight, maryland governor martin o'malley released a written statement through his spokesperson saying quote, the vast majority of marylanders support these efforts to reduce gun violence. the new law will take vaekt on tuesday and it will make families safer. i'm shomari stone, news 4. >> and a federal judge will hear challenges to maryland's new gun control measures on tuesday, the same day they are set to take effect. apone wants say the new law is a flagrant disregard of second amendment gun rights. maryland's attorney general issued a review of the law earlier this year, calling it both constitutional and legally defensible. >> disapproval from the county is forcing the volunteer fire department in prince george's county to take a firearm

fund-raiser to nearby charles county. they're raising money now for facility and equipment upgrades. prince george's fire officials tell us tonight they're concerned about the image of a public safety agency selling guns. >> not trying to deny anybody their constitutional rights. but we felton comfortable with the message. things worked out in our favor in that they were able to conduct their fund-raiser, all be it rr in a neighboring jurisdiction. >> while there will be actual guns at this event, there will not be any live ammunition. >> there is concern tonight in an arlington apartment building where a creepy intruder struck three times, and just over a week. one woman told news 4 she woke up and the man was staring at her and kept watching her while she screamed. he left after a minute or so. this was at the meridian at courthouse commons. another victim said she awoke to the man stroking her arm. access to this building is restricted, so police are looking into whether this could be an inside job.

tonight, reaction from fair fax county residents after a new report that crime overall is down, but serious offenses are up. comparing 2012 to the year before, there were four more homicides, kidnapping abduction cases went up, and so did forcible sex offenses. overall, crime was down slightly, but one neighbor tells us the report is troubling. >> yeah, generally, i do feel safe here. but that makes me a little nervous. >> fairfax county police tell us tonight they're already responding to the new numbers. they're stepping up efforts to stop domestic violence and hiring new officers to join the force. >> more now on a united airlines pilot who died after an in-flight heart attack last night. less than a decade ago, faa regulations would have kept him out of the clock pot, and now some are wondering how hoold is too old to fly. the pilot was 63 years old. they used to require retirement

two weeks ago, the seaside park boardwalk in new jersey went up in flames. this fire quickly spread, and in just a matter of minutes, the area was covered in thick, black smoke. 911 calls from that day were just released tonight. they tell the story of how poem tried to contain the fire before it went out of control. >> oh, my god. you guys have to come quick. it's going from nothing to something. >> hurry guys, hurry, hurry. >> we got flames, we got flames. >> okay, so flames showing now? >> yep. put some water on it. but be careful. >> everybody's on their way. stay away from it. >> some people have complained that it took crews too long to start pumping water on that fire. the fire chief in seaside park tells us his crews first had to make sure no one was trapped before they could begin their attack. >> the reverend jesse jackson is in cuba tonight. he's hoping to meet with a

maryland plan who was serving time in prison there, allen gross. he was arrested in kinda in 2009 after he was caught importing restrictive communications equipment. he said he was only setting up internet access for island jewish groups. but he was sentenced to 15 years. gross is a government subcontractor. and in the past, the reverend jesse jackson has been able to free u.s. citizens in syria, iraq, and yugoslavia. >> maryland drivers, if you're still using your cell phone behind the wheel, listen up. starting next tuesday, drivers without a hands-free device will become a primary offense. maryland went hands free in 2010, but it was a secondary offense then, which meant an officer couldn't pull you over for being on a phone. motorists will face tined of $75 for a first offense, increasing to $125 and $175 for the second and third offenses. police in prince george's county are hoping that newly

released surveillance video will bring a couple of jewel thieves to justice. you actually see them. come in through the roof of the rivertown jewelers in oxen hill. investigators say they cut the security cables, used a blow torch to break into a safe before they made off with half a million dollars worth of merchandise. this happened back in may, but police are going public now because their previous leads did not result in any arrests. >> on monday, a new fence will be going up near a loudon county middle school to keep students from jay walking. our northern virginia bureau got this video of kids darting across a dangerous road to get to class at belmont ridge middle school. some parents say the fence isn't good enough. they want more convenient crosswalks, but for now, the county tell said us the fence is the best solution. >> and you made it. it's friday night. the weekend is here. what have we got? >> another great weekend. i mean, this great stretch of weather is just continuing. and i really do not see an end

to it, at least not in the shortterm. the long-term, we all know it's going to change eventually. outside now, a very nice evening if your out on this friday night, you know what i'm talking about. temperatures on the comfortable side. you can go outside with your jacket, short sleeves. whatever you have, it's pretty good. temperature today did get up to 74 degrees. average high now down to 75. our average low is at 59. that's right around the average. but the big deal is we're still more than two inches below average when it comes to rainfall. this is it time of year many of us have to recede our lawns or get the lawns together and we need to see rain to help out with that. temperatures down to 64. winds out of the southeast at about 8 miles per hour. temperatures around the rest of the region about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than what they are in the city. that's typical for this time of year. already down to 54 in martins brg, 10 degrees cooler in d.c. 55, gaithersburg, so these are the areas that are going to be cooler tomorrow morning. i think temperatures will drop

by another 5 to 10 degrees by early in the morning. storm team 4 radar is clear. it's going to stay clear as we move through the weekend. one thing that may change is the cloud cover. we had clouds that came through a little earlier today. those are the clouds there, a mixture of sun and clouds all day long. notice the clouds around the philadelphia area. these are all moving our way with this northeasterly flow. i think we'll see more clouds during the day tomorrow. not complete sunshine, but a nice day. low temperatures, 46 in gaithersburg. 57 in washington. 57,leesburg, and fredericksburg around 51. a chilly start, but tomorrow afternoon with sunshine, a mixture of sun and clouds. we'll get back to where we were today. temperatures around 74 in d.c. 70 annapolis, and 73 in le leesburg. i think you'll see more sunshine back west of the blue ridge. if you're thinking of camping, this weekend is really looking nice. tomorrow, i believe the national parks are all free to get in.

now, fall foliage if you're thinking of hitting the parks, maybe shenandoah international drive toward the mountains, low color right now, moderate colors in parts of the west virginia mountains but the color will pick up in the next couple weeks. 74 tomorrow, 76 on sunday. 77 on monday. 80 on tuesday. and that trend continues as we move into the first week of october. 81 on wednesday. 82 on thursday. so temperatures getting up there. well above average by that time, the average temperature will be in the low 70s. so we're talking about 5 to 10 degrees above average as we make our way to next week. as i said, is there a change? well, after friday, we go warm. normally when we go real warm, we tend to go real cold. so be on the lookout for that. i have that coming up next week. >> and we're burning a lot of daylight now. >> losing two and a half minutes a day. i don't know where it's going. ♪

however, 12-3. >> all right, in football, the high school scene was buzzing tonight. dematha versus good council. two of the top programs in the area squared off and the stags had revenge on their mind. good counsel had won the last four meetings between the two schools. the streak came to an end tonight. you know, it was a big-time game when that man shows his face. maryland head coach randy edsall in the house. stags down, third and goal for the falcons, and cameron philips picks off that pass. he's headed the other way. phillips is verbally committed to virginia tech. you can see why. 95 yards the other way. remember that number, 95. they took a 14-0 lead. here's their running back. he's headed to wisconsin next year. and this kid is the real deal. 95 yard touchdown run. great play there. he's going to get a big hug from his head coach, ejieja brooks. they win big over good counsel.
