millions are feeling the effects of the first government shutdown in 17 years. it goes beyond the closure of parks and museums. did you know new patients will not be accepted into clinical research trials at the national institute of health. about 200 patients will be turned away this week. the fda cannot continue review and approval of new drugs. conservation efforts to protect endangered species will stop. tracie potts live in washington. the post is reporting president obama is canceling a trip to asia? >> reporter: that is what they are reporting. we are trying to confirm that this morning. clearly this has consumed the white house. this along with the rollout of the affordable care act has

consumed president obama's time. it is essentially the sole focus at this point. here on capitol hill there are efforts to try to get the government running again but not in a format that democrats plan to accept. last night there were votes to get pieces of the government back on track, veteran services, the city of washington, d.c. which is federally funded and a few other things that republicans voted on but those votes did not pass. they are going to try to again today with a new rule to pass it with a simple majority. it is probably not going past the senate. democrats say it is all or nothing. we are not going to pick out certainer parts where people can come back to work. epenitentiarial epenitentiarially -- essentially what all of that means, grid

lock. and the government shutdown could just be a warmup act. treasury secretary jack lew says he is using extraordinary measure to avoid hitting the debt ceiling. lew says by october 17 the nation will have about $30 billion left to pay bills and is urging congress to extend the nation's borrowing authority. the affordable care act officialally went online tuesday. this as new polling suggests many americans find the law confusing and overwhelming. danielle leigh reports. >> reporter: at this call center stf fielded an array of questions. in washington, d.c. people waited for in-person help enrolling for obama care until the website stopped working. the website blamed heavy traffic

packages. one was destroyed after it was deemed to have a destructive nature. fbi is involved but is not commenting on an arrest. tough talk from israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. he is urging the world not to believe the warm words from new president hassan rouhani. he insists iran is set on building a nuclear bomb. >> a wolf in sheep's clothing, a wolf who thinks he can pull the wool over the eyes of the international community. >> netanyahu wants sanction against iran. it is something he encouraged president obama to maintain in their meeting on monday and strengthen if iran keeps pursuing nuclear capabilities.

rouhani said at the u.n. last week that the nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. for a week that started out with a brutal storm and power outages in many places things might be looking up for winter lovers in washington. that same storm that wreaked havoc in low lying areas have blanketed the cascades and foothills and a beautiful display of snow. it made snowboarders happy. those folks looked like they were stuck on side of the road so it is causing some problems. >> it is amazing how people just love the first snow. >> is october a little early? or are we in a heat wave? >> in the mountains no. it can snow in areas of the great lakes and new england in october. the heat was just incredible

some adjustments to service. federal workers make up about 40% of rush hour ridership. 4:29. this in from overnight. the head women's coach and assistants are on leave this morning over accusations of misconduct at georgetown. the university says two weeks ago concerns were raised about, quote, unprofessional conduct and the use of inappropriate language by head coach keith brown and assistant coach valentine. the school released a statement that reads in part, as soon as we learned of this, the university immediately started an investigation into the conduct. we are taking steps to ensure this investigation proceeds expeditiously, thoroughly, and fairly. no conclusions have yet been reached. brown is entering his second season as head coach. the president of howard university is retiring. he has led the school for the past five years. the announcement comes after a
