green. president obama's planned trip to malaise wra off now. malaysia's leader says the president called him to cancel citing the crisis here at home. the prime minister said he's sending secretary of state john kerry to represent the u.s. now this trip is focused on boosting economic ties with asia and was supposed to include stops in indonesia and the philippines and would have been the first visit to malaysia by a u.s. president since lyndon johnson in in 1966. day two of the government shutdown. the shutdown is costing millions of dollars each hour. tracie potts is live with more. >> reporter: how do you get hundreds of thousands of people back to work?

there is a new strategy on capitol hill today but it's not clear if it's actually going to get people back to work. here is what's happening. three votes to get certain parts of the government running again including veterans' benefits, the national parks and museums and the city of washington, d.c., that funding is included as well. they tried it last night. it failed. now it's being brought up with different rules in the house with only a simple ma swrort. there is a fairly good chance based on last night's votes this could pass. the problem is it will face pushback with democrats in the senate. democrats along with the white house are against this. president obama has promised to veto a partial government reopening. it's all or nothing, get everyone back to work is their mant mantra. democrats pushed back and that's why it failed this in the house. we expect similar results in the senate today. we'll have to wait and see.

that's the new strategy, just unclear at this point whether it will work. eun? tracie potts live on capitol hill, thank you. >> tea party radicals have done the unthinkable, they've shut down the federal government. for us that's hard to comprehend as being good. for them, they like it. >> i think it's fair to say none of us want to be in a shutdown and we're here to say to the senate democrats come and talk to us. this is how we resolve our differences and can work our way out of this kind of situation. today some federal workers furloughed by the shutdown will volunteer their time to help out tourists. work e workers will be handing out leaflets judd the museum of natural history directing visitors to attractions that are actually open. the volunteer day is being organized by two unions for federal employees. workers will be handing out that formation from 10:00 a.m. until noon today. ough, later into the week if this shutdown lingers.

this morning some is parents are vowing to break into padlocked parks that are closed because of the shutdown. many kids were greeted by signs like this at lincoln park on capitol hill. that park and several others are run by the national pack service which, of course, is closed for siness right now. many parents we talked to say closing a playground is going a step too far. >> for my kids, i'm frustrated because they're being punished for something they're not son for. >> we understand the reason behind it, but we still think it's a terrible waste of a great facility for no good reason. nutrition benefits for 9 million pregnant women and new mothers also on hold right now. and stay with news 4 as we work to cover every angle of the impact on you. head over to nbcwashington.com for some freebies. local businesses are offering to furloughed employees. we'll tell you more about that in a little bit, too. if you had trouble using new online exchanges to find a health insurance plan yesterday, we can explain why. at least 2.8 million people visited healthcare.gov.

i'm molette green at the live desk. we have some breaking news out of prince george's county this morning where there has been a police involved shooting in calverton all happening in the 3800 block of twin lakes drive. details are still coming in. what we do know is the officer became involved in some sort of altercation it at the scene. it involved in that person being shot and fatally injured. the police officer was not harmed. we have a reporter on the way.

our megan mcgrath is on her way to the scene and will be updating us on this developing story out of prince george's county this morning. i'm molette green at the live desk. back to you. >> molette, thank you. 15 before the hour. right now, this very minute, the federal shutdown is costing all of us a lot of money. here is how it breaks down, the first government shutdown in 17 years is adding up to $12.5 million per hour, $300 million a day, about $1.6 billion a week in work and services the government is unable to perform. that's from the economic consulting firm ihs global insight. the 800,000 furloughed federal workers may get back pay when they return to work. yesterday president obama warned of dire economic consequences the longer the shutdown goes on. members of the military were spared furloughs because of the shutdo shutdown. congress passed a last-minute measure to keep service members' paychecks coming. civilians on military installations, though, were not so fortunate and that has leaders offering apologies. colonel bill king issued one of those apologies.

he's the commander of joint base andrews. the base will remain but some services are being shut down as well. the world war ii memorial like dozens of other landmarks around the country is closed to visitors this morning. the barricades couldn't keep the men who stormed normandy from visiting the spot created in their hohn anohonor. they returned home to mississippi after touring the memorial yesterday, police tape in hand. the men and women visited d.c. as part of an honor flight paid for by donations. they were had met with locked gates but were moved be and police stood aside so they could reflect and remember. >> a beautiful tribute this is a all of these young people ought to do this this. >> absolutely beautiful. i just can't get over it. >> many of the veterans also expressed frustration over the shutdown calling it absurd. nine couples planning to marry at national memorials will

have to make new arrangements. the park service closed them because of the shutdown, we know. michael and his fiancee were one of the couples planning to marry at the jefferson memorial had this had saturday. the same place where they went on their first date in 2009. >> i mean, it's frustrating. it's frustrating that this happened. everyone wants their wedding to be exactly how they picture it and something they can look back at years later and think fondly of. you know, we're not quite going to have that because of this. >> the two will now tie the knot at their reception venue. the park certificaservice says e and other couples can reschedule their weddings when the government reopens. 4:47. in prince william county, virginia, a judge will hear from lawyers trying to get an accused drug pin off death row. justin wolf was convicted or the 2001 murder-for-hire of a drug supplier. the prosecution is accused of

coercing a key witness during the trial. they are trying to determine whether wolf should be released from prison. he has been on death row since 2002. this afternoon a d.c. high school teacher will be seven is ten sentenced for receiving child pornograp pornography. he was a science teacher and a track coach at the skal. he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. 4:48 now. today montgomery county leaders will talk about a resolution supporting raising maryland's minimum wage. the resolution calls on the maryland general assembly to raise the state's minimum wage to $10.10 by 2016. the county leaders will join state lawmakers in building momentum to pass the increase when state lawmakers return to annapolis next year. this morning d.c. police are looking for those responsible for five violent robberies in

which tazers were used to attack the victims. two of those attacks happened on sunday. a newspaper tlidelivery man was tased and robbed and 10th and b streets, last week three occurred near logan circle and the convention center. police say these are the three people wanted for those three attacks. they're looking into the possibility that all of these attacks are related. this afternoon d.c. mayor vincent gray will officially open a new police training facility. a facility on the grounds of the old mpd shooting range in southwest. kathy lanier says it will provide realistic simulations for recruits and officers. today's ribbon cutting ceremony kicks off at 1:00. new this morning, some d.c. residents stranded in jacksonville, florida, overnight will finally be headed home. the jacksonville international airport is back open. passengers were evacuated after two suspicious packages were found, one in the terminal, the other in a parking garage. police say one was deemed, quote, destructive and had to be destroyed by the bomb squad. no planes were allowed in or out

i'm molette green back at the live desk. happening now in new york, a biker suspected of beating up a dad who was just drafg through manhattan with his family has apparently turned himself in to police. amazing video of this attack on sunday. the biker could be seen punching the car window. the victim was eventually pulled from his suv and beaten. reports say all of this came about after some sort of dispute and chase. the motorcyclists are this town for some event called hollywood

stunts where they drive around the city doing tricks. charges range from reckless endangerment to criminal mischief. another is accused of setting off this chase has been arrested and charged. the at the live desk, molette gre green. the government shutdown is not just the talk of the town here in washington. it also has hollywood offering up some opinions. george clooney talked about the showdown during the premiere of his new film in new york. he applauded peter king and guys on the right trying to get the government back up and running. he also said he believes, quote, cooler heads will prevail. we could hear more views from clooney on the situation this morning. he will visit our friends on "morning joe" on msnbc at 7:30. if you're one of the hundreds of thousands of furloughed federal workers sit issing at home today you cannot check your work e-mail. according to "the washington post," it is ill laegal to chec your e-mail. the law was passed in 1984.
