because of a once in a lifetime recession. this is not happening because of some financial crisis. it's happening because of a reckless republican shut down in washington. >> and the president continuing to speak in the county. this affects companies like that that rely on the lending arm in the shut down. all 68 district offices are closed right now. the president will continue to speak and we will have the latest on nbcwashington.com. barbara? >> the location for the speech said a lot about what can happen if the shut down continues. m lewis construction has done well, but a prolonged shut down can change that. megan mcgraph spoke to employees as they wnlt in this morning. what did they say some.

>> they are concerned the they have their jobs, but worry about what the future holds. you saw the president speaking to employees and other guests, but a few moments ago he arrived by motorcade. take a look at the video. of all of the people who work in the area offices watching the motorcade. the president is waving as he passed by the the folks lined up on the walkway. they had several facilities here in maryland including the asphalt manufacturing plant here in rockville where the president is speaking. they acquired that plant a few years ago adding jobs to the local economy. the company is doing well. they are up to 250 employees and expanding and starting to bounce back from the revegz. the president said a prolonged shut down can hurt the economy and hurt businesses and lead to job losses. the small business loans are on hold. there is no one there to process them. loans like m lewis used to bring

this planned through rockville, but that is not available to businesses any longer. we are talking to employees and say they are glad they have their jobs at this point. they are concerned what a prolonged shut down could mean. >> i really think this company has a lot of employees. it's really going to hurt if they close. >> everyone has bills. you need a job to get an income, you know? >> while the employees we spoke to said they were concerned, they knew people who actually are on furlough. they do believe that some kind of a deal will be reach and hopefully they say reached soon before it impacts them and their business here in rockville. a lot of people interested in what the president has to say. news 4, back to you.

>> thanks, megan. lawmakers in the house and senate are sticking to party lines. the strategy is to refuse to bring a clean continuing resolution to the floor for a vote. the senate passed a clean bill to end the shut down, but does not contain any of the amendments that delay or dismantle the law. the house is voting on a series of smaller bills that may resonate with the public, but are not likely to pass the senate. moments ago the house highlighted the mini bill they passed to fund pediatric cancer research at nih. >> i have seen these families. i have seen the looks on the faces when they are given hope. we have taken that hope away and we need to replace it. >> while we work out our differences here in washington, children should not be denied treatments. >> democrats demand the entire government be reopened with an

employees. the affordable health care act takes will effect. according to the "washington post," the water authority sunday letters to virginia urging them to block the new law. they said they will face heavy taxes because it offers a higher tier of health coverage for employees. they say the water company plans to avoid the taxes by scaling back the insurance plans. let's start with what the president said. he said it's the only thing keeping the government shut down at the meeting last night. >> trying to shift the blame and make sure that people understand what is actually happening here in his view.

that's a big key thing as to whether they will move off the stand and something has to change for obama care in order to get the government back up and running. >> is it really the failure of leadership or maybe that he felt there was a leader boehner. keeping the republicans of one mind. >> it's interesting to see what led up to this. there was an interesting piece this morning by a conservative writer in the washington examiner about if they brought a resolution to the floor, it would have a majority of republicans supporting it. at this point he is not doing that and republicans are asking what is the end game and why? some think it could be because he wants to restart the talks of a grand bargain and get the debt ceiling off the table and get something happening. reiterating the president

the deficit. that would could for $340 billion over ten years. these seniors here say they don't want to balance the budget on their backs. >> they changed my last moment on earth. more complicated that more people have given it blood, sweat, and tears to get the social security benefits. they are talking about cutting the benefits. if anything we should be lightening. don't mess with us. >> the alliance for retired americans that put this together came up with estimates as to what the cost would be forcing your citizens by age 75. benefits would be down $660 a year compared to today. at 85 the benefits are down $1150 and by age 95 down $1,600 a year. the seniors say that may not seem like much, a few hundred

here and there, but they worked hard in order to receive the benefits and it could make a difference in their day to day lives. reporting from capitol hill, news 4. >> metro is feeling the effects of the shut down. we took pictures on the orange line during the rush hour. the trains are usually packed. business is down 22%. it's only running six-car trains now and mixes in-car trains during the rush hours. you won't notice a difference if you take the train today or tomorrow. rail services are keeping their current schedules through the end of this week. they said it will let riders know later today if they will operate on the f schedule tomorrow. >> in annapolis, one event will go on as scheduled despite the shut down. this saturday is highly anticipated against the air

tractor-trailer. people died and six were seniors on the bus. one was a tractor-trailer driver. 14 other people were hurt and two are in critical condition today. >> a rash of stun gun robberies in d.c. d.c. police are searching if are a third suspect in the most recent incident. two teenagers were arrested for the stun gun robbery that happened yesterday morning at this gas station along georgia avenue. this is the 6th stun gun robbery ten days. they don't feel safe. >> we think other people are having stun guns and that's scarier to think that the community should grant it. >> police say if someone is trying to rob you, don't put up a fight. it's not worth getting hurt. >> eight students are charged
