we have a vehicle out of control. he's trapped. >> you could hear multiple shots. we knew we were in danger and we heard the police screaming get down, get down. >> investigators are trying to learn more about the suspect's mental health. new details are emerging about that woman behind the wheel of that chaotic chase. her maim mirian carey. the 30-year-old mother from kwn kn tri -- connecticut tried to ram her car through a white house barrier with her 1-year-old daughter in the car. she was killed, her baby survived. the big question tonight is why? >> we have team coverage from the eyewitness accounts to the first calls for help and the officers who chased her down. we begin with wendy at the life desk with more on the suspect's

emotional stumbles. >> to fight, we learned, the suspect may have been suffering from post partem depression. s carey had her 12-month-old daughter in the car with her during the chase. tonight in stamford, connecticut, carey's entire apartment building has been evacuated. police and the fbi agents are waiting for a search warrant so they can enter her apartment. but a bomb squad and a hazmat crew are both on the scene, and police have set up a decontamination area. we don't know why. within the past hour, we've also learned that carey was a dental hygienist who at one point worked if a connecticut dentist. he says he saw a change in carey after she sufshed a fall in january 2012. when she returned to work, she announced she was pregnant.

over the next eight months, multiple patients complained that she would be hot tempered, she was a bit rough with patients. when he tried to talk to her about it, she didn't want to hear any complaints about herself. she couldn't take criticism well. in august, he let her go. at the looifr desk, back to you. >> the attempted security breach started at the white house, but it didn't end there. the woman sped off and the chase ended in gunfire near the capitol. that's where shamari joins us live. >> good evening. tonight, u.s. capitol police roped off this area. i'm currently standing at constitution avenue northeast. and maryland avenue northeast. let me move out of the way. you can see the lights flashing over there. this is as close as you can get to the capitol. this is where the crash ended. investigators are trying to determine a motive, and what set this woman off. tonight, u.s. capitol police search for evidence, and investigate under bright lights

near the capitol. this is where 34-year-old miriam carey was shot and killed. just take a look at the bullet holes on her car. she led police on a high speed chase that started when she rammed her car into a security barrier at the white house. tv captured a part of the chase. >> i heard the gunshots and smelled the powder after that. it confirmed it was gunshots. >> i heard about six gunshots, very rapid succession. >> investigators are trying to figure out why carey suddenly drove away as police opened fire. leading police on a chase. her toddler was in the car. >> the child is approximately a year old and is in good condition and in protective custody. >> reporter: the gunfire put the capitol on lockdown for about half an hour. there was no weapon on her. >> the security perimeters

tourists took koecover, dispatc calls from the police. >> reporter: good evening. it began at a sdurt gate on the east side of the white house. a woman hit a secret service officer trying to bust in. and that led to a chase to the capitol and shots fired at two locations. tonight, we look at the time line of events as we play for you the emergency dispatch calls made throughout this ordeal. within moments after officers shot the suspect, d.c. fire and ems communications put out the first emergency call. it was 2:23 p.m. it all started when the woman tried to drive into the white house security entrance. her car hit a bike rack and then a secret service officer. the suspect fled to the capitol where she jumped from the curve. >> i don't know how she was able to back her car up and get out of that but she was. as soon as she reversed it and

tried to get away, that's when police fired at her. >> an officer was injured, the time of the emergency call, 2:28 p.m. >> we have an officer in a vehicle lost control. he's trapped. >> the officer was medevaced from the scene. a short distance away, the suspect was shot and killed. the time of the call, 2:29. >> we have news reports of shots fired near the capitol. all units respond. >> the suspect died on the scene and now the question that needs to be asked is what was her reason for doing this? doreen and jim? the capitol police officer was just released about an hour ago. >> doreen, his actions were called heroic. tonight, that capitol police

officer walks awhat from this incident virtually unscathed. it was this security barrier that injured the 23-year veteran officer. moments later, he was put on a gurney and medevaced to the washington hospital center where he's since been released. senator harry reid, himself a former u.s. capitol police officer spoked to the injured officer earlier today. >> i'm paraphrasing but he said i work every day to make sure you're safe. >> reporter: and as the house discussed how to end the shutdown. >> express our gratitude to the capitol police. >> reporter: a standing ovation. now, the chief also mentioned a secret service agent that had been injured when all this unfolded. however, we have not heard an update on what happened to that individual, whether or not they even had medical attention or

were transported to a hospital. another thing we should mention, when we first arrived here, they said they had two people here from the capitol hill area shooting incident. one of them a female, and the other the male capitol police officer. we have not heard any news or any updates regarding that female. erica gonzalez, news 4. >> the senate adjourned today after that shooting incident near the capitol. that means that the government shutdown will stretch into a fourth day. just minutes ago, the white house announced that president obama is cancelling his trip to asia. a hang-up still centers around funding for obama care. the president made his case in rockville today. he accused house speaker john boehner of prolonging the shutdown by refusing to allow a vote on a funding bill that would also not derail the affordable care act. boehner and other republican leaders accuse the president of

refusing to negotiate on flaws in the health care law. >> the president's refusal to work in a bipartisan way has led us to this shutdown. >> the longer this goes on, the wost it will be. and it makes no sense. the american people elected their representatives to make their lives easier, not harder. >> house republicans have pushed through individual bills to restore funding for national parks. the national ips tuts of health, veterans affairs and some other programs. but democrats have said those targeted bills won't pass through the senate. >> despite the shutdown, the head of the federal emergency management agency is fem sa recalling some furloughed workers. e78 ployees have been called into service because of the threat from tropical storm care are karen. what's the latest? >> that's right, the latest, i've been taking a look at some

♪ for a store near you go to benjaminmoore.com/dcmetro. . >> we're back with the latest on what we' learned about this afternoon's deadly chaos outied the u.s. capitol. tonight, a capitol police officer who was injured in a crash while pursuing the suspect from the white house to the capitol is out of the hospital. law enforcement official earlier said a secret service officer was also injured after carey tried to drive away from the white house. we're still waiting to hear about that officer's condition. carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist from connecticut was shot and killed at the end of it all. her 1-year-old daughter who was in the car with her is in protective kis did you now.

and carey's motives still unknown. we are hearing from a doctor who worked from the suspect in the capitol hill shooting. let's go to wendy at reger. >> dr. barry weiss is the dentist. mirian carey was his dental hygienist. he said she began at an average em plo iee but dwoled some behavioral problems. let's listen. >> we tried to talk to her about some issues we had with her that we wanted her to see things the way we saw it and try and change a few things. she was very reluctant to do so. >> he said he actually had to let her go in august because she was getting to be a bit rough with the patients. dr. weiss said he was completely stunned to learn about the chase

what i've done is i've shaded in all the counties across our area that are some four inches down in rainfall over the last 60 days. and it's a pretty sizable area. d.c. up through montgomery county, howard, prince george anne arundel county to the west. loudoun and fairfax county all in four inches in the hole with rainfall. we do need some. 72 degrees right now with eeve got dry conditions right now. tomorrow morning dry, not too cool. at the bus stop tomorrow morning, 66, 68 degrees by 9:00 a.m. i'll be wanting to put the short sleeves on tomorrow. a mild start for us. watch the clouds move in. another partly sunny afternoon for us. don't think we're going to have as thick of cloud cover. to the north, there might be just a little sprinkle or two prk but big time moisz chur gathering down the gulf of mexico. here it is, early morning saturday, just about ready. some of the outer bands about

ready to make their way on shore east of new orleans right now. expected to make land fall late saturday night, early sunday morning. for us, i think what happens is that big storm system out west hits us monday with some of the rains from karen hitting us tuesday. so finally, we could get a chance here with both systems to pick up at least some moderate, maybe even at times heavy rain. 66 to 79 degrees at 11:00 a.m. going fast even with cloud cover. 87 degrees around 2:00 or 3:00 tomorrow. a good warm front for us. hitting a heeg of 88. culpepper 87. tomorrow afternoon, close to 90 degrees on saturday. in fact, this weekend, we not only will feel some of the heat but a little bit of humidity. i think that it might feel a little bit like july on saturday with a wee bit of humidity.

as far as monday goes, the rain is likely. i think by the time we get rid of both storm systems, making their way out of here, we could see anywhere between place of business three-quarters to over an inch of rain in many neighborhoods. you can see that rain there posted for tuesday. and folks who want the fall weather back. folks who've wanted to put their sweatshirts back on check out those early morning temperatures on wednesday and thursday. we're back to the 50s. and there will be some neighborhoods dropping,ening, down to the upper 4s towards the end of next week. >> if you like the warmth, enjoy just a couple more days. thanks veronica. ♪
