schwartzel from -- >> they had obviously a good chance to win in the hole, johnny, but those are the kinds of highlights and good feelings that really propel you down a stretch of a long day. and that lead is swelled to 3 up. up ahead at the 9th jason day, you know, this putt for the internationals for birdie to schwartzel, this could be another 3 up lead for the internationals. >> pretty good leave here underneath the hole. there's -- i don't see much break in this. pretty much the fall line, isn't it? >> pretty close to the fall line. i don't think it can do a lot. >> it's going to a little on the slow side. might be looking out to the right a little, roger.
6:01 pm
>> it could sneak just left, but it can't be much. >> just a little at the end. >> so a half there and day and delaet remain 2 up. back at the par 5, 5th, internationals have already made their birdie. this the third for kuchar and the u.s. and tiger going to have to make that to have it. pretty hard to leave it short. leaves tiger a very quick ticklish putt. to 6. >> this is a moment ago when stricker got that shot close and the fans are chanting for steve. for now bill haas has his putt for birdie to win the hole.
6:02 pm
and it would be the first american lead this afternoon. take a 1 up lead to 6. that bill haas has been playing great today. let's go back to 5. >> this is tiger crouching over this birdie putt to have the hole. >> he has looked at this one from every conceivable angle too. the light tends to be a magnet drawing the ball toward it, which is to his left. >> just have to worry about hitting it firmly, just has to make it. so he can take a little of the break out of it. surprising miss there. that's not that hard a putt. for the second straight session tiger woods and matt kuchar fall
6:03 pm
2 down. so chance to look at the board here. 3 up, 2 up and another 2 up lead for the internationals. so, jimmy, things looking a little brighter on this overcast day for nick price. >> they are indeed, dan. foursomes, again, having success. are you a little surprised? >> well, you know, we've got a team of ball strikers, there's no doubt, jimmy. these guys have hit the ball well this week. maybe they've got the edge with the putts, but mark, tony and i we spend a lot of time doing the pairings for the foursomes more than anything else because we knew that was our weakness. this week it does seem to be our strength. so the guys they keep the momentum going we're going to have a hell of a day tomorrow. >> what we're seeing today, is this a matder of desperation or of patience? >> oh, no, this is definitely patience. these guys have played well. we've been through some really tough times with the rain, you know, the weather delays on the course, back off the course. these guys have hung in there.
6:04 pm
and they've found their stride today. and we're having a good time right now. >> indeed. let's head out to 11. >> richard sterne will be playing the third shot. this was just a moment ago. move the ball into the bunker down the right side of this par 5. and we're forced to lay it well back. shot safely on the green, but a long way from the hole. still trickling back shows you how much slope is in the green from the right side. and now live zach johnson playing 3rd for the u.s. team. >> he too trying to make amend for a bad drive put dufner in the higher rough. zach's got 127 yards. >> starting out right trying to
6:05 pm
draw back, but it's not drawing here. >> and rides the slope. but the problem is just coming down that hill it gets running away from the hole. certainly the better birdie opportunity. so zach johnson and jason dufner a little bit of a charge into their match. the last few holes getting it all square. internationals trying to rally. they lead in three matches in the foursome session. stay with us. we'll be right back. i am today by luck. i put in the hours and built a strong reputation in the industry. i set goals and worked hard to meet them. i've made my success happen. so when it comes to my investments, i'm supposed to just hand it over to a broker and back away? that's not gonna happen. avo: when you work with a schwab financial consultant, you'll get the guidance you need with the control you want. talk to us today.
6:07 pm
we're back. internationals will be putting for birdie first. and leishman fairly lengthy putt uphill. and moving from right to left. >> exactly right. and typically it looks a little straighter, but as we all know, we've all played here. it does break more than what the players see and greens are picking up a little more moisture right now. so it's going to be a little bit slow. just going to have to be conscious to get enough speed.
6:08 pm
>> good call. nowhere near firmly enough. back to 6. ernie els with his shot. >> positioned very well. nice angle to the hole. >> popular spot today with that hole location. let's take a look at this 6 hole. 446 yards, very wide fairway, about 50 yards in width. got to avoid that fairway bunker on the right, which is just over 300 yards off the tee. second shot comes over the water. tiger had just driven his ball into that bunker, so he has a problem. should say kuchar has a problem after tiger hit it there. >> i think he's just far enough
6:09 pm
back he can get it over the lip. needs a clean strike though. that was really good. good angle. so good answer after a poor tee shot. two good looks for birdie there for the international team and the united states. let's go to the 11th. jason dufner, a chance to win yet another hole. similar putt to what we just saw from leishman uphill moving left and jason dufner scores it in. so the u.s. now 1 up in that match. they've won three of the last four holes. nice rally there. we go to the 7th. matsuyama trying to go for the green in two here after a big drive from adam scott.
6:10 pm
already laid up here at the par 5. afford to go. not quite. >> well, a programming note for tomorrow, here's what's happening on golf channel, presidents cup coverage continues at 7:00 a.m. eastern time. they're going to resume the matches at 7:35. golf channel will get you ready for that. we'll also call the action beginning at 7:35. and then we'll have continuing coverage on nbc beginning at noon eastern time in the singles competition. the presidents cup and the rain is come again. although we have not had any other stoppages besides the 1:00 to 2:15 or so, hour-15 delay earlier today. so jason dufner and zach johnson
6:11 pm
grab their very first lead of the day. 1 up over leishman and sterne. >> 163 yards here this 12th hole, a wonderful hole. maybe the signature hole on this golf course. they fell 2 down as you can see through 7, but wins at 8, 9 and 11 have given them the 1 up advantage. >> and, johnny, great strategy getting the iron in dufner's hand letting him play the par 3. he's been starting to swing the irons real well the last few holes. >> probably the easiest hole location on the green, isn't it? >> yeah, very receptive and with the greens as soft as they are. going to go right after this. that's exactly what he's done. nice line just left. >> that's about what you should do is hit it 15 feet past the hole in case you slightly mis-hit it, you're still on the green.
6:12 pm
and then, you know, put it in the back bunker, ofblg. exactly right, johnny. that's certainly the safe side to miss the hole. take that front portion out of play which effectively takes the water out of play. >> here to respond is mark leishman, 29 years old making his first presidents cup appearance and a captain's pick by nick price. that selection made just a couple of weeks after his wife, audrey gave birth to the couple's second son oliver. playing in his first international competition and the family growing with their second child. back over to the 10th. >> keegan bradley with his third. had a bad tee shot. mickelson laid it up to here out of the fairway bunker. that's from 68 yards. >> that's a great standing.
6:13 pm
>> it's a hard driving hole because it turns so much from right to left. and back at 6 now. after matt kuchar hit an excellent shot from the bunker, tiger now for birdie. nobody has read that correctly to that hole location up on that spine in the middle of the green. so that is in for a par 4. >> one of the americans on this year's team only phil mickelson has played in more presidents cups than tiger now competing in his eighth, but tiger is the top of the list, ahead of mickelson in foursome victories in presidents cup competition. >> tiger's 11-3-1 in the presidents cup and foursomes, which is really a good record. a lot better than his four-ball. he's 7-9-0. >> we're at the 6.
6:14 pm
now, brendon de jonge, can he read this correctly? >> i think he can from tiger's putt. he should get this on a good run. >> well, the greens are so wet, hard to get the proper speed. so els and de jonge stay 2 up. and up ahead at the 10th graham delaet with his long birdie putt. but if it goes in, they win the hole. >> nice lag. >> good effort. yeah. so the hole is halved with pars and the international squad stays 2 up. >> our goodyear blimp still hanging in there among the raindrops in ohio, whether you're driving 300 yards or 3,000 miles, or whether you're weathering weather delays at the
6:15 pm
presidents cup. goodyear, more driven. take a look at our current radar provided by the weather channel. we've taken too many looks at this this week, but keep you abreast of what's happening. looks like a loop. >> but looks clear to the west behind them. so get through this little sprinkle, it might be clear sailing. >> here's another one of these rookies for nick price. 32 years old from south africa, richard sterne, joined the european tour in 2003. one of those guys getting his first taste of the big-time international competition at an age that, you know, you might think he would have gone to a couple of these. but he's 32 years old and experiencing it all for the first time. six wins on the european tour for him. >> and, johnny, this ball's pretty much on the fall line. if he gets it out there too far, it's going to hang and let it
6:16 pm
stay right there. >> starts it slightly right of the hole and it's staying slightly right of the hole dead straight as you called it, maybe inside left edge would have been the putt. he was like, hey, i thought it was going to go left. >> i think dublin, ohio is getting more rain than dublin, ireland this week. >> i've seen a few looks on the international faces of players that haven't really played here because these greens do take a lot of local knowledge. we've seen how well jason day has putted with as much information he's accrued over the years and playing here as a member. and, you know, johnny, you know when you know the greens you're not guessing too much. it really makes a difference. >> sure. comfortable out there and knows every little nuance, where to miss it, where to hit it. yeah. it seems like when you play tournament golf here at
6:17 pm
muirfield, it's not exactly a parched affair. >> that's a little bit -- had a little bit to do with the success of the kuchar-woods last two tournament champions and probably just not so much where to hit it. everybody knows they want to hit greens and fairways, but where to miss it at times to get away with winning a match with not playing their best. >> so this would continue a real solid comeback by johnson and dufner here. >> in order to save this maybe little break. >> yeah. little bit left to right. >> three of the last four holes. nearly made it four out of five. we go to 7. matsuyama has a birdie putt here and a chance to win the hole to
6:18 pm
win the match. no. in front of the hole there. so an opportunity missed. >> getting closer to kickoff for notre dame and arizona state. shamrock series at at&t stadium. irish and the sun devils. notre dame trying to bounce back from a loss to oklahoma a week ago. >> you know, it gets dark at like 7:00, so phil's going to be able to see the whole game. this is the putt attempt for phil mickelson. leishman an arizona state alum. putt here for him. >> he should know exactly what it does, inside the hole. >> stay 1 down. we continue approaching the 11th hour of golf at the presidents

6:21 pm
gary, for the americans. tiger in the fairway, ernie els drove the ball in the right hand rough and not a good lie for brendon de jonge. >> we've seen him hit a couple ma mouth second shots on par 5s earlier in this competition. >> this one's 273. i remember one of the other ones i think was 273. >> it was right in that neighborhood, hit a big high cut. it wasn't raining at the time. so let's see what he can do here. >> yeah, and he hadn't been out here for 11 hours either. still got some legs, huh, gary? >> not easy walking around on this soft turf, that's for sure. i would say if anybody still has legs, it's probably this guy. >> compact, cool swing. >> toward the center of the green right -- maybe not quite there.
6:22 pm
>> plug just into the shorter grass. no problem. >> i can't imagine the ball going super far today the way it's raining and everything else, barometer's probably dropped. >> so, mark, this has got to be a layup. >> it's a layup. and he's really got to focus on it too. you don't want to put it in the left fairway bunker, which is sort of a transition bunker. >> he has avoided that. needs to make sure he avoids the rough. and did not. >> a little careless. big wide fairway. and let's take a look at this 7th hole, par 5, 543 yards. actually, a little bit of a double-dog leg. moves right to left to start. try to place a drive in between all these bunkers. and then the hole gently moves back to the right. interesting feature here,
6:23 pm
johnny, about 30 yards of rough as the fairway ends short of the green. >> it's been that way, hasn't it? >> it certainly has. and the hole location today not easy. just at the bottom of a slope. >> uh-huh. >> no two holes even close to look alike on this course, do they? >> that is one unique thing about it no question. as we look at the matches in progress, the internationals up in three. the united states up in two, although both of their leads just 1 up. so i would think nick price still encouraged by the proceedings late this afternoon. go over to the 10th. >> well, both teams have missed the green. the united states has missed way to the right. and international team is short. both hit drives in the left rough. and getting late in the day hitting out of the wet rough. it's just hard to get the ball
6:24 pm
out of there flying. i think the united states playing first. >> you're going to have to look at it. ball's probably in there somewhere. >> in here? >> yeah, i think so. >> yeah. start here. why don't you take a stance and we'll see. >> he's looking for casual water there. while we're waiting let's go to 11th. >> and we'll -- appears the internationals will play a third shot first here. >> this ball is close to being interfered by a sprinkler head here, gary. but the lie is so good, he's not going to take relief.
6:25 pm
and we'll watch mickelson play here at the 11th. and roger maltbie with this group. >> looks like phil has been determined to be away. back into the sun it's just peeking through the clouds here. and a little bit of a missed calling and this screen is pitched pretty steeply from back to front. i would think you have to take this in behind the hole, gary, or risk having it spin back to the front. >> no question. long and a little right of the hole would be ideal. >> he's kept the side of the ball now. so here she comes. >> uh-huh. >> very well-engineered there. >> that's what they needed to do.
6:26 pm
>> day will be playing for the internationals. >> again, 85 yards. >> well, at least he got a good visual of what you need to do, rog. how to play this shot. >> yeah. pretty good picture. i would think he would know that though playing as much as he has. >> there's two down. >> little unlucky. >> yeah, it was a good shot. >> putt for birdie for the
6:27 pm
internationals. and over to the 7th just a moment ago playing this third shot. on the rough, going to be hard to control the distance. did it nicely. that's pretty good, john. on that down slope. >> yeah, very good. >> now kuchar. >> great scrambler. that was beautifully done. oh. just touches. he's an athletic guy and take a lot of pride in his short game. >> i think that was in. >> he thought it was in. you thought it was in. and a lot of people in the gallery thought it was in. >> we go to 8. this is birdie for steve stricker to win the hole for bill haas.
6:28 pm
stricker just keeps pouring it in. three birdies in the last four holes for haas and stricker who are now 2 up. matsuyama and adam scott back to 7. >> de jonge will be putting birdie for the internationals and the u.s. team in close. >> gary, everything falls away to the back left corner on this screen, so i would think he would tend to pull this putt in that direction. >> i think you would be correct, mark. >> doesn't seem to miss too many, gary. i mean, when he's got going, they go in. woods will have a chance to cut into the lead.
6:29 pm
>> mark, i would think this is a pretty good position to be fighting from. shouldn't be much break, should there? >> no, this one is pretdty flat. kuchar came close to making it, but it was not an easy shot. johnny said he's brilliant around the green scrambling, but that was particularly difficult. >>
