it will before the day is threw. we'll talk about that when i see you next. >> thanks, chuck. new this morning, car crash in fairfax kill twod people on south van dorn street when the car smashed into a train bridge. it happened around 3:00 this morning, shutting down the roadway around i-95 for a few hours. they've since reopened. another double fatal overnight, this one in loudoun county. at rail stop terrace. passenger in the car was ejected and died along with the driver of the motorcycle. deputies trying to figure out what caused the crash. overnight accident in a metro tunnel resulted in the death of one man about sent two others to the hospital. derrick ward is live outside the station now. good morning, derrick. >> reporter: you get a sense that something serious has happened here, it's on the faces of the metro workers still on the site here. it's a serious, forlorned look.

a man died overnight. welding work going on in the tunnel between union station and judiciary square station ignited some hydraulic fluid that was leaking from a piece of equipment. three people injured. all three were transported to a hospital. we understand that the contractor died. the other two people were injured, metro employees, with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. there were no trains in the station at the time. metro is in the midst of track work on red line. that section of track was shut down in any case. the tri-state operating committee and the ntsb have been notified about this. of course, ntsb is in the midst of furlough. we don't know how that will affect the ensuing investigation here. we like to talk about the inconvenience that's caused by this track work. it is very serious work, very

dangerous work, as is highlighted by this tragic incident that happened here overnight. we are live in northwest. derrick ward, news 4. back to you. the government shutdown is now in its sixth day. it looks like it will stretch into the seventh. congress is in recess today, which means lawmakers will not get back to work on dough baiting a budget deal before tomorrow. the house unanimously voted pay the 800,000 federal workers who are furloughed but not until the shutdown ends. bringing back 300,000 civilian employees after deciding they should be exempt from furloughs because they provide support from military personnel. one lawmaker who got a lot of attention in the days before the shutdown shared a stage for hopeful verge yain governor. protesters lined the streets outside as texas senator ted cruz and republican gubernatori

go to nbcwashington.com for continuing coverage on the shutdown. all over this country this weekend, people are again calling for immigration reform to once again take center stage. protesters rallied in more than 100 cities yesterday. rallies are known as national day for dignity and respect. thousands of demonstrators want president obama to stop deportations and revive an immigration bill that is stalled in the house. affordable care act registration site is back up and running. this is what it looked like overnight. it had to be taken down to work out some technical glitches, as they're being called in the system. the site went down tuesday due to high traffic. we have breaking news just in to the news 4 newsroom. nbc news confirming that four u.s. soldiers were killed today in afghanistan. a u.s. military official says that they were killed by an improvised explosive device. those soldiers were working with afghans in southern afghanistan. how the government shutdown forced a change of plans for the

right now, police need your help to find two men who robbed a liquor store last night. officials say the two masked men held up the a-1 liquor store on martin luther king highway around 6:00 last night. thieves split up. one held store employees at gunpoint while the other grabbed cash from behind the counter. as the two were getting away, one of them stopped and shot a worker in the leg. that store employee is expected to be fine. 14 people are recovering this morning after a generator issue caused a carbon monoxide leak. several resident at the

middlebrook apartment building on battery lane started complaining about feeling sick yesterday afternoon. fire crews were called to the scene and immediately declared it a hazmat scene and evacuated 158 people from the building. many residents weren't sure what was going on until they got outside. >> we walked outside to see the scene. people were getting helped. unfortunately right when we walked down, a woman passed out and was taken out on a stretcher by many paramedics. so that was really frightening. >> everyone taken to the hospital is expected to make a full recovery. residents were allowed to go back into the building after a few hours passed. officials are still not sure what is wrong with the generator but are looking into it. today marks 15 years when a student was absent zbukducted a in wyoming. the national cathedral is holding a forum with shepard's

new this morning, more than 1,000 acres of land have been torched out in california. the fire started yesterday afternoon near the lake anna marine base. it caused an immediate evacuation of camp pendleton. 200 firefighters are on site with at least nine helicopters attacking it from the skies. also the arizona fire chief, who was temporarily blame for the record the deaths of 19 firefighters back in september has resigned. former chief dan frajo and prescott city manager reportedly came to a mutual agreement for his departure. some city officials blamed him for the deaths of the elite fire crew also known as the hot shots. it was later determined that the wilderness was unsurvivable,

clearing his name. regardless, he decided to leave. his last day on the job will be november 15th. solemn ceremony in maryland. families came from around the country to attend the ceremony in frederick county. the services started a few minutes ago. we told you how the government shutdown is forcing the ceremony to be moved from the national emergency training center because it's on federal property. instead the ceremony is now at mt. st. mary's university. family members were able to visit the memorial yesterday. dozens of fire sirens will go off at noon to pay respects for fallen firefighters. a series of bells sounded when a firefighter died in the line of duty to alert all firemen. good day for ice cream. i'm a mint chocolate chip guy

near 80 even as late as 8:00 or 9:00 this evening. cloud also really start to lower and thicken overnight tonight. by the time you wake up tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy sky will be in place. currently in the mid to upper 70s. warm-up is well under way already. and what we're waiting on are two things, cold front and deep tropical moisture from what was karen down across parts of the gulf coast. that's throwing moisture up the eastern seaboard. it's going to get picked up by this strong cold front which will ring all that moisture out as it crosses the area tomorrow. that's the reason tomorrow could be a very busy weather day. severe weather possibility tomorrow. a low threat for tornadoes. not much of a hail threat. damaging winds will be a possibility and localized flash flooding also could be possible because the rain could come down fast and furious at times. potentially high impact of weather on your monday. rain and thunderstorms localized flash flooding possible. one to two inches of rain possible across much of the area. gusty winds. 30 to 40 miles per hour or

home. as time passes on, will we see a trickle down effect to other parts of the country? >> i think you will. i asked secretary jack lew about that this morning on "meet the press." most economists will tell you the week or two of a shutdown won't do permanent, irreparable damage to the economy. the more it goes on, then you start seeing a potentially devastating affect on the economy. add to that is this looming deadline to the debt ceiling. on october 17th congress has to raise the debt ceiling. otherwise we'll run out of money, the treasury will, and won't be able to pay all its obligations. that, if the country were to default, would be a true calamity, perhaps on the global stage as well. >> vets that couldn't get into the world war ii memorial, kid with his cancer patients not being able to get their medicine and research stopping. this is not good for the president, republicans, democrats. you would think they would come up with something to soften the blow. >> it's one of those things that's a pox on all your houses.

polls say different things. the latest i saw had republicans being blamed about 10% more than did the democrats. the longer this goes on, everybody gets stained with it. i think people are really disgusted. nbc put out the call this week with the #dearcongress. people are sounding off on twitter. it's just outrage, collective outrage that congress is not doing its job and not finding a way to bridge these differences. >> we talked about the default. if that happens, you mentioned true calamity. with the stakes so high, why are we not seeing both sides races to negotiate? >> i don't want to negotiate about the debt ceiling. there should be some things that you don't go to the brink of crisis with. he's saying if we negotiate over the debt ceiling, take it to the last minute, to the last hour, that causes an economic effect. that's his position right now. now on the other hand, republicans say you should negotiate over it. it will be bad for everyone if

in the week ahead, the debate over the maroon and gold could heat up. new york state native american tribe campaigning against the name redskins will be here in d.c. they'll hold a public meeting at the ritz carlton as league owners start to arrive for their meeting. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton is asking the team to change its name. president obama also weighed in on the name that some say is offensive to native americans. >> i don't think there are any redskins fan that is mean offense. if i were the owner of the team, and i knew that there was a name of my team, even if it had a storied history, that was offending a sizeable group of
