dueling immigration demonstrations are set to go this morning. megan mollet is live. >> reporter: senate democrats are expected to put out a measure. it would increase the borrowing cap for one year or one trillion today. also though it could turn into a showdown that could unnerve financial markets. as that's happening, there are two rallies going to happen today. tens of thousands of people are expected here including house minority leader nancy pelosi. the other one happening about the same time between 12:00 and 1:00, this township protest organized by somebody. they're asking lawmakers to entors existing immigration

at 5:30 there are few signs of progress as the shutdown enters its second week. we expect to hear from both the gop and house democrats today. both groups will hold press conferences at 10:00 this morning. senate democrats may also move to pass a bill this morning that will raise the debt ceiling. it would boost the cap by about $1 trillion and have no strings attached and we're getting a better idea of the impact the shutdown is having on furloughed employees. more than 24,000 unemployment claims have been filed in d.c. and maryland over just this past week. we'll get a live update in a moment. good morning to you, i'm eun yang. >> and i'm aaron gill tryst. one memorial is closed. we'll get you updated on the forecast. >> tom kierein is tracking how things are looking right now. much cooler today, tom. >> yeah, fall fell on us

president agrees to discuss it. >> reporter: boehner says the president is risking wrecking the economy. he wants the president to pick up a phone and get a budget towards this country. president obama in their back and forth he's not going to hold hots stage parts of the budget. we've been counting the votes, too. our own nbc couldn't there were as many as 21 republicans willing to cross over with democrats and move forward the ertz to promote a budget that would actually get the government running again, get people back to, would and get them paid. right now they're not talking. >> now the american people expect from their leaders differences in a time of crisis. we'll sit down and at least have a conversation. really, mr. president, it's time to have that conversation.

news 4's molett green is at the news desk. >> thank you so much. we're following developments out of prince county. firefighters are on the scene of a double fatal fire in triangle. they got the call just after 4:00 this morning for a blaze on fuller heights road. that's in a mobile home park. after crews put out the flames they discovered two victims inside. that's all the information we have inside. megan mcgrath is racing to the scene to bring us up now. thank you, molett. right now john kerry is meeting with indonesia's president and australia's prime minister. president obama was supposed to be there instead. more troops could be headed

zbr . the showdown over the shutdown. it's shifting to a showdown over the nation's debt limit. the senate could vote on a bill to raise the borrowing limit in hopes of avoiding the first ever default. the three main credit rating agencies are warning it could lower the rating. some children could soon be returning to the classroom. a former hedge fund manager and his wife have donated $10 million to reopen 7 head start programs that were closed by the shutdown. veterans and visitors kept from seeing the vietnam wall

because of the shutdown now have a chance to see a replica. the vietnam veterans memorial fund and georgetown university have brought a traveling wall to the university's campus. the wall that heels will be on display starting today through columbus day weekend on the lawn of heeley hall. it's free and open for anyone to view. free shuttle buses will be available to bring people from the mall to campus. with many of the free tourist options closed, some of the city's more expensive museums are seeing a booming business. the international spy museum has seen a 40% increase. they've seen more and more visitors pour into their doors. 5:46 now. we have a full list of what's open and what's closed during the shutdown. head over to our website nbcwashington.com. new this morning, more than three dozen people have been killed in a series of bombings in baghdad. police think sunni militants were behind the attacks. most of the bombs exploded in

predominantly shiite districts. a group against gas drilling in the washington national forest. three groups argue that fracking is a destructive drilling practice that has no place in the largest forest on the east coast. u.s. forest service is expected to release its updated management plan for the g.w. forest later this fall. >> police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman and the robbed her. they gave a detailed description of what happened including how the man put his arms around her neck and dragged her to the ground. this happened off 10th street in queb quebec. right now police in annapolis are looking for a man who robbed a woman outside the mall. he pushed her to the ground in the m and t parking lot and grabbed her purse around 6:00 last night. we're told she hurt her achknkl

we're covering prince gorges county for you. a group of lawmakers urging people to reconsidering building a shopping mall. that could mean the end of the school's popular golf course. the development would, quote, pave over the most significant green pace. givens has not responded to the issue. gasoline wholesalers were mistakenly overcharged. wholesalers were overcharged as much as $95,000 last week because of a calculation error. a new 8.3% wholesale tax on gas and diesel feel went into effect on october 1st. the tax office says wholesalers should refund the amount overcharged to service stations. gas stations should pass that on to motorists. 5:49. sexual violence is becoming more

common in ten age gers. researchers at the center for innovative public health research found one in ten teens committed an act of sexual violence. researchers say the sexual aggressors had more exposure to violent x rated material. this is the day many of bernie madoff's victims have been waiting for years. five of his former employees will go on trial. prosecutors say they were part of madoff's billion dollar ponzi scheme. an elderly man most likely will not face charges after driving his car into a crowd outside a funeral home in idaho. boise police say the man was parked next to the sidewalk when his car unexpectedly accelerated into the crowd. nine people were injured. two of them were in the car with him. as of now the crash does not seem intentional and all of the injuries seem to be relatively minor. >> take a look at this

surveillance video. it captures a robbery at a long island convenience store and then the dramatic fire back. he takes out a machete and chases the robber from the store. the worker is the store owner's nephew. she says she's just glad that he's okay. new jersey residents, new yorkers are cleaning up after a string of storms. take a look at some of the damage. 60-mile-an-hour winds slammed into the area, taking down trees, knocked out power for some residents. so far no injuries have been reported there. you can see a lot of damage. 5:51. time for weather and traffic on the ones. the storms left behind refreshing, cool air. what a change, tom. >> yeah, dramatic drop from yesterday. in fact, temperatures have dropped 20 to 25 degrees from where we were yesterday morning at this time. we were in the 70s. now down into the 50s. i talked when all things weather with the northern virginia welcome club. this is a group of retired

professional women. this is a club that's been in existence for 53 years in northern virginia. they're engaged in civic and charitable activities. they occasionally get together for social events. i was honored to speak to the group in centerville. the northern virginia welcome club. i want to thank them for arranging my visit there last week. it was a lot of fun. now as we take a look at the view from space, we have a lot of clouds here over much of the region, although it's mostly clear in western maryland into west virginia. a lot of cloudiness farther east and southeast there. these clouds are with us in and throughout much of the morning. a chill in the air. a dramatic drop from yesterday. we are down into the 40s now much of the region. closer to washington. hour by hour today we'll have our temperatures not nearly as warm as we've seen the last several days. it will be reaching just the upper 60s by mid afternoon. might have a little bit of sunshine in and out as we get into the afternoon hours and

evening hours. we did get a little bit of rain yesterday. some areas got over two inches. did that help our rainfall shortage? chuck bell is with us. >> good morning, tom. every little bit helps as well for sure. we're way behind for rainfall if you go all the way back to the early parts of august. we picked up more than an inch of rain yesterday bringing our total since august the 1st over to 3 1/2 inches. that's only half of average. since august 1st we should have had about 7.5 inches of rain. yes, that rain yesterday certainly did help. it was our rainiest day since back in july, but it's still only about 50% of our average rainfall now since august the 1st. lub luckily though this pattern will help us make up some ground. >> we probably will get some rain moving back in on wednesday afternoon late in the day into wednesday evening. before then we ought to be reaching the mid 60s tomorrow afternoon with a lot of clouds around. then some of that rain off and on likely into wednesday night, off and on thursday and perhaps

are transported through cells. the government shutdown here in washington is having an affect on wall street. things could get worse before they get better. bertha coombs joins us. >> doesn't sound very good at all. stock futures are pointing to a flat opening on wall street. the market slumped on monday on growing concerns about the looming deadline to raise the u.s. debt ceiling next week. the dow and s&p 500 closing at a one-month low as a result. many traders say no one is panicking, at least not yet. the head of moody's rating agency says it's extremely unlikely that the u.s. will default on its debt. let's hope so. meantime, buy a suit, get a steak? reports say brooks brothers plans to open a steakhouse near its store in mid town manhattan. they're targeting next summer for the opening. it could be the prototype for a branded restaurant chain across the u.s.
