and less than an hour ago the indian nation issued a response saying we are thankful for his willingness to listen. they're inviting him to meetings in upstate new york next month so he can hear from native americans who find the name offensive. from the live desk, i'm barbara harrison. in 30 minutes, president obama and vice president biden will meet house democrats at the white house to look for a way out of the government shutdown. now in its ninth day. and they will be trying to avoid a bigger crisis. right now, signs of progress but still no major breakthrough in the talk to end the shutdown. party leaders met briefly and democrats in the senate called for a end to the shutdown on the capitol step ls. we captured fireworks. >> i'm on your side.

>> that's senator reid's reaction after mayor gray pushed for money to fund d.c. operations. a new poll out today says americans are putting more on republicans than democrats for the shutdowns. congress right now has an approval rating, get this, of just 5%. the bodies of four fallen service members were brought home from afghanistan today. the grieving families' pain is magnified by the news the shutdown prevents them from getting a benefit to help with funeral expenses and other costs. white house officials say president obama was very disturbed by the news and he directed the pentagon to work with budget officials and his lawyers to find a way to fix the issue by the end of the day

congress is also scrambling to fix it. veterans will feel the impact that this continues. he testified today at a hearing on capitol hill. he said nearly 4 million vets will not receive disability checks in november if the shutdown lasts a couple of weeks. that includes 100,000 veterans who work there. if the va veterans get furloughed and also receive disability checks, they won't have any income next month. they're expected to announce they're slashing military and economic assistance to cairo. this move has been under consideration since they ousted the first democratically elected leader back in june. the u.s. provides cairo with $1.5 billion in aid every year. it's not clear yet just how much money the u.s. will continue to send to egypt.

this happened at the federal building. one person is in custody at this time. about 20 shots were fired. our affiliate there in wheeling say the police are still on the scene. it's not clear if anyone was injured, but we'll continue to follow the story and bring you new details as they come into us. i'm barbara harrison at the live desk. aaron hernandez was back in court today. his attorneys want the judge to extend the gag order to keep the details of the case quiet if they haven't been talked about in court. they also want prosecutors to turn over the evidence they've gathered. he's accused of murdering the man who was dating his fiancee's sister. the prosecutor's key witness says hernandez was alone with the victim just a few minutes before his death. but his account could be in question because he changed his story. the father of a 9-year-old boy who somehow made it onto a plane to vegas without a ticket is speaking out. >> as leanne gregg reports,

investigators are releasing new details about how the boy snuck past security. >> reporter: while investigators are trying to figure out how a 9-year-old boy managed to sneak onto a delta airlines flight from minneapolis to las vegas, the child's father on the left wearing a costume to disguise his identity, says he struggled with his son's behavior. >> if i whoop my son, i get locked up. if i let my son keep doing what he's doing, i get in trouble. somebody please help me. >> that plea after a series of events. in addition to the plane ride, the boy stole a 30-foot delivery truck in minneapolis and crashed it into a police car, and that he has a history of taking the light rail to a suburb near the airport where he would sneak into a waterpark by blending in with families. >> evidently he had been riding the train and getting on the train and rolling around and running off a little bit. >> he's not what's called an honor student.

the previous deadline of march 31st. the salmonella outbreak that has sickened 300 people in 18 states has some wondering for the government could be doing more to stop the outbreak. in news 4, how the shutdown could impact your held. a family allergy care physician is here to explain. a lot of those infected have been hospitalized because of salmonella. the cdc put 30 furlough workers back to work. what should we make f of it? >> you never know how much you needed them until you needed them. hopefully they're going to be able to give the voice of experience. what's happened in previous outbreaks. be able to identify where the outbreak is from and most importantly how you treat it. those people are coming back. they have to get the computers fired up and get back to work. >> should we worry that our food

barbara harrison is at the live desk with details about an accident involving a pedestrian in springfield. barbara? >> we just got video that came into a newsroom just a short time ago. this accident happened around 2:00 p.m. on franconia road at the intersection of commerce street in springfield. a woman was hit and killed crossing the street. she was not using a crosswalk. the pickup truck that hit the woman did stay at the scene. >> right now, house democrats are meeting with president obama and vice president biden in a closed meeting at the white house down pennsylvania avenue the house just voted unanimously to fund death benefits for families of fallen soldiers. steve handelsman is live on capitol hill for us with the latest on day nine of the shutdown. >> let's talk about death benefits. it's reaslly an issue that has punched out and outraged americans. it's such an oversight.

such a symbol of the dysfunction in washington that both sides are rushing to fix it. defense secretary chuck hagel went to dover air force base amid outrage that the shutdown stand off went too far. the remains of four u.s. troops killed in afghanistan were returned. but because of the shutdown, the usual $100,000 death benefit to help families with expenses were not paid. 26 families affected. hagel and president obama are said to be very disturbed. some could become homeless. testified the obama secretary of veteran affairs. >> i just didn't think the holocaust members, this committee, or the congress would allow this to happen. >> republicans blame democrats. >> the administration is playing politics on the backs of family who is have followen.

. a drunk driving charge against the son of former penn state football coach. jon sandusky was arrested early this morning in fargo, north dakota. police say they pulled him over for making an illegal turn and he failed a sobriety test. sandusky is director of player personnel for the cleveland browns. a team spokesman says they're aware of the situation and are gathering facts now. police could be using new tactics to keep an eye on you

soon. the american civil liberties union say they support the use of police body cameras. body cams are clipped onto an officer's uniform and record everything an officer does while working. they're already being used in parts of prince george's county. the body cams will keep both the police and residents safe. there's another effort on the way in prince george's county to help former inmates become productive members of the community. >> as prince george's bureau reporter zachary kiesch found out, it's more than about safety. it's about improving the economy and strengthening lives. >> i feel like because of my mistakes from my past i really don't have a future. >> he will be the first to tell you he's made mistakes. at 19 he was convicted of felon gun charges. there was nothing easy about growing up here in suitland. but now that he's turned his life around, he's finding the

a wam is dead and 44 others in the hospital after a greyhound bus crashed into a tractor trailer. the wreck happened just before 2:00 this morning. the bus was about 300 miles east of cleveland. interstate 80 was closed until noon today. police say they're investigating to determine what caused the deadly crash. the fbi is looking for a man accused in a sex assault case. barbara harrison has the story

pretty sloppy for the morning rush. we have rain across the area. 30, maybe 40 miles per hour right near the coast. so nasty also for the evening rush. temperatures will be held down. the high temperature tomorrow, just 59 degrees. i promised you i would take the inland from coastal areas. look at the wind gusting over 30 miles per hour for areas of central maryland and northern virginia. we have areas of steady rain coming up. could see between one and two inches of rainfall here. no big flooding across the area, but minor river flooding. off to the west, not quite as much wind. the winds could gust to 25, maybe close to 30 miles per hour. that is possible for areas there. western maryland. areas of eastern west virginia.
