leader harry reid's face. tom sherwood was there and joins us to tell us more about this. >> jim, this is just not the way they do things on the senate side. and harry reid, he wasn't happy. mayor gray led a spirited protest today, asking the democratic senate to back a republican house move to free the district from federal budget restrictions. darrell issa joined grey. but the senate has dismissed gray's appeal when grey learned harry reid was standing nearby holding his own press conference, grey left his own event. he pushed into reid's and stood right by him. a rare disruption. then grey confronted reid on his lack of support. reid didn't sound pleased. >> i'm on your side. don't screw it up. okay. i'm on your side. >> the majority leader abruptly left, leaving gray to explain his actions. >> what i wanted to hear said is

arlington sidewalk grate where a man fell 50 feet today. he was walking to a meeting when the steel grate collapsed. he fell down to a concrete slab. it took rescuers nearly an hour to pull him out of there. he suffered mostly bruises and cuts and is expected to make a full recovery. a woman today was hit and killed trying to cross a road in fairfax county. she was not the crosswalk when she was hit. the driver of the truck did stay on the scene. alcohol is not a factor. the victim is identified only as a woman in her 30s. republican ken cuccinelli added up the campaign promises of terry mcauliffe and put a price tag on it. >> ken cuccinelli opened a new

line of attack on democrat terry mcauliffe. cuccinelli put his own price tag on mcauliffe's campaign promises. he claims it could cast a family $1700 a year more in taxes. they cast the opponent as someone who doesn't fully understand government. >> virginians can't afford another $1,700 in higher taxes, especially in the current economic climate. >> the mcauliffe campaign shot back calling the numbers fabricated, adding ken cuccinelli has sunk to a new low with his latest round of attacks on mcauliffe. he argued cuccinelli is really driven by social issues and

"i'm terry mcauliffe, candidate for governor, and i sponsored this ad." these are birth control pills. more than half of american women use them at some point in their lives but ken cuccinelli sponsored a bill that could have made common forms of birth control illegal, including the pill. cuccinelli was one of only five senators to support this "potentially radical intrusion into domestic, family and individual decision-making" why is ken cuccinelli interfering in our private lives?

look at the official police report. it lists all the stolen items. laptop, laptop, laptop. just the sheer volume indicates it too many hands and a vehicle to pull this off. parents are wondering what kind of person would steal from these learns? >> from what i heard, it sounds like somebody pretty young themselves. i don't know. so are all these thefts related? we won't know for sure until there's an arrest. the father of the 9-year-old boy who snuck onto a plane held a news conference today. he hewore a disguise to protect his family. just weeks alaska he said the

station, you can see the flag blowing in the wind. winds will not be huge with this storm. we're talking 10, maybe 15 miles an hour. gusting between 20 and 25. and it's just a steady rain. i don't think we're ever going to see heavy downpours. but we will see moderate rain. this has been on the lighter side. montgomery county seeing the light rain. the in through the city of fairfax. right on down to springfield. and as we look on towards the south, you folks will most likely get the most rain out of this. and it will continue. a also seeing the heavier rains. and this is just a sign of things to come. here's the storm right down to the south. but that storm is interacting

with a storm to the north. and that's driving in all of the moisture off the atlantic ocean. what i mean is it's an area of high pressure. when you combine the two, that's when you get the easterly flow or northeasterly flow. that's continuous for 24, 36, 48 hours. that's why we call it a noer easter. as the storm moves up the coast, it will continue to bring up the flow right off the ocean, and that means rain. here we are friday at 5:00. still rain. still rather windy with the winds gusting over 20 to 30 miles per hour. so this is not a bad storm. 59 degrees right now with winds out of the east and northeast. but watch what happens through the next few hour ls. winds gusting to 30 # miles an hour. around 41 towards the river. they will always be closer to

getting by. we want to bring you new information after shots were fired at a federal building in wheeling, west virginia. a man with an assault type rifle fired shots at the courthouse. the man has died. and one officer was hurt by shattered glass inside the courthouse. no other injuries are reported. >> back to the government shutdown now. a local man who was injured serving overseas in a combat zone came home to no job. a woman is using her life savings to keep her home. they're all victims of the shutdown. >> jerome is a 24-year military vet now serving in the navy

reserve. his full-time job is with the department of veteran affairs. >> i was called up for active duty in december of last year. >> while serving in the combat zone, matt was injured. he just returned to the united states. >> now i'm on regular medical leave. but that leave terminates tonight at midnight. >> ending his medical leave would have been welcome news under any other circumstance. now the federal government shutdown, it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon. >> reporter: matt says with his medical leave ending, that means his reserve pay will stop. since he's furloughed from his full-time job, he's having trouble finding a landlord who will rent him an apartment. for now he's forced to live in a hotel near the air force base. >> it's depressing.

highland area this afternoon. for the first time washington redskins owner dan schneider is speaking directly to fans on why he doesn't want to change the team's name. he says he does hear the critics and respect their opinions but he says the main reason is tradition. after 81 years the name redskins holds the memories of where we came from, who we are and where we want to be in the years to come. a representative from the onita indian nation invited schneider to meet with him writing during his visit, we will organize a special meeting of the family where mr. schneider can explain to them why he believes they deserve to be called redskins. coming up tonight, members of congress drafted new laws to shut down the congressional furloughs. check out this collision caught

next time you get pulled over, police officers could record you. body cameras are being used across the country to prevent police from becauabusing their authority. u they now say they support the use of police body cameras. it will record everything an officer does while working. tonight some business owners in downtown leesburg, virginia, are not happy. the town council voted to move forward with some renovations to king street. as we first reported last month. the plans call for the

elimination of two blocks of parking. it will make the town more ped friendly. the meeting ended just past midnight. the tracks were found in eight columns on the south corridor. the building should be fixed by november. the project, they say, will cost more than $80,000. tonight a new york city police undercover officer is charge with gang assault and an attack on an suv driver. a new video tape not released to the public shows the police officer smashing the suv's rear window and riding away before the driver was pulled from the vehicle and beaten. there are also indications that five other officers may be involved. the internal affairs department

malvo is challenging the sentence after a recent supreme court decision. it outlaws mandatory life sentences without parole for juveniles. malvo was 17 at the time of the killings. the attorney general office said the ruling should not be applied retroactively. they also say the senate shouldn't be challenged because he struck plea bargains for some of the killings. from the live desk, i'm jim handly. >> thanks, jim. oh my, oh my. a truck driver tried to wave that train down to stop, as if he might have, just before the train slammed into the trailer. the driver wasn't injured. he jumped out of the cab when he realized he couldn't move in time. the driver stopped to let other cars g by, and then he was blocked by traffic with a trailer still suspended over the
