ogden drive in clinton. fire crews had trouble containing the flames because of high winds. no one was hurt, though. the redskins play tonight at fedex field. you may want to pay attention to a news conference this morning about a half mile from the stadium. a local group has squoind the effort to get the skins to change the name. the coalition of prince george's county leaders and organizations says the team's name, the redskins, is offensive, disparaging, and insulting. maryland republicans want you to pay less in taxes if you live in the state. house republicans say a 10% income tax cut will be one of their top priorities of the upcoming legislative session. they unveiled their priorities over the weekend. this tax cut may not the be realistic, though. republicans are the minority in the house and the senate. four students with ties to virginia will be heading to oxford soon. charles tyson and evan behrle are both seniors. emma person was also selected to be rhodes scholars. their focus of study ranges from physics and computer science to social thought and english.

"news 4 today" continues at 5:00 a.m. "news 4 today" starts now. brace yourself. another day for the big coat, the hat the and the gloves. of the temperatures drop as the deadly snowstorm makes its way across the country. the forecast you need to hear as you're making thanksgiving plans. good morning, everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eun yang. welcome to to this monday, november 25, 2013. the cold blast heading our way is already blamed for 13 deaths in the southwest part of the country. icing roads in new mexico led to a roll over crash that killed a 4-year-old girl. a winery mix much of icy rain turned to snow covering nearly the entire state. there is so much snow state patrol closed roads just as millions of drivers are

preparing to head out for thanksgiving. the same storm dumped 13 inches outside of oklahoma city. road conditions are also treacherous there. at least four people died in spinouts and rollovers in that state. temperatures are not expected to get above freezing making road conditions even worse. >> now all eyes are on our part of the country with such cold temperatures here. what lies in store for us and how does it coincide with your thanksgiving plans? storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here with the first check on the forecast for us this morning and we're looking at temperatures, windchills now in the teens in a lot of places. >> yeah, the wind has dade down from what it was yesterday but still enough of a wind, about 5 to 10 miles an hour, to make it feel like it's in the teens. the right now 24 at reagan national. that is the coldest temperature in washington for the autumn season. so far it's more like mid winter cold. and by 8:00 we'll still be in the mid-20s in the metro area. still may be in the teens to low 20s in the suburbs and rural areas where it is right now.

southbound and northbound clear. connecting to the beltway also clear. no issues as you head to the american legion bridge. i'm back in ten minutes. aaron and eun, over to you. 5:02 now. new this morning, we're following a stabbing in northwest d.c. police tell us this happened about 2:30 this morning along georgia avenue near park road. two men were stabbed but weigh do not know their conditions right now nor do we know what happened exactly and no word on suspects either. today a virginia state board of electionses certificateses results from the attorney general's race. that a probably won't settle l the closest statewide race in modern virginia history. democrat mark herring on the left lea votes. more than 2 million people voted. that's close enough for obenshain to request a recount. both men have assembled transition teams. also today the d.c. council could take a step toward raising the minimum wage. the committee plans to vote on a hike this morning that would make the wage $11.50 an hour by

2016. it is being considered by law makeers in montgomery and prince george's county. the committee, the full council could vote on it as early as next week. mayor vincent gray said he wants an increase but he believes anything over $10 an hour could hurt businesses. in the day ahead we will get our most in-depth look yet at what led to one of the worst school shootings in american history. investigators plan to release a summary report today on the sandy hook elementary school massacre. 20 children and six staff members were killed as was the shooter's mother. that was almost a year ago. the report will not include all of the evidence gathered by state police there. the lead investigator still fighting to keep 911 tapes from being response, clues about a motive, and the shooter's mental health records have also been withheld. 5:04 now. prince george's police and po postal officials launched investigations as to what happened to a postal carrier saturday night when he was shot

to tet death. tyson barnette, you see right here, was shot while making his deliveries in the dark on saturday night. many postal workers blame the late deliveries saying it's not safe to be outside in the dark. union official could not help but mention how the environment has changed. >> there's a sanctity of the letter carriers. letter carriers have traditionally been able to go in areas, the roughest areas of the country, and never have anything happen to them. >> prior to barnette's death, several carriers placed requests to start delivering earlier in the day according to postal workers, and they say those requests were ignored. in the days ahead lawyers for chris brown expected in d.c. superior court. he is accused of punching a man in the face in d.c. last month. a judge reduced the charge from a felony to misdemeanor assault. brown is still on probation from a 2009 attack on his then

girlfriend sing er rihanna. he is not expected to be here in court himself today. we could learn more about what led to a double murder/suicide in maryland. the frederick county sheriff's office plans to release its final report on the shooting. 42-year-old barbara giamarelli, 40-year-old ben asefa, and 3-mon 3-month-old samuel asefa were all found shot to death in their new market home last wednesday. a 5-year-old girl was able to run to a neighbor's home. she is staying with family friends until child services decides where to place her. also today a 16-year-old boy is expected in court to face charges in the death of this d.c. man, james booker. anthony williams is charged as an adult in the murder of the 24-year-old. bo whis family says he became a father just before his death. d.c. police say williams is one of three people involved in backer's death. this morning a lot of questions after not one but two football fans falls several stories from the tops of-to-different football stadiums. plus, one football game becomes an emotional reunion. a surprise awaiting one family

last year online tickets sold out in four minutes. the 5:17 is the time. we are following two stories, both of which started during nfl games. a man fell from the upper deck at the ravens/jets game. the 48-year-old is currently in the hospital after reportedly hitting his head. also right now he's in serious condition. and on the west coast a woman jumped from the upper deck at the oakland raiders game. stadium officials say she jumped from the third deck of the stadium into the seats below. a man saw her falling and tried to catch her. both the woman who jumped and that man are now in the hospital. 5:18 now. you'll soon get to read more about what happened inside the cleveland home where three young women were held captive. michelle knight has a book deal that should come out next spring. the other two women are working together on their own book. in news for your health, if you have a heart valve of defect, this story is for you. a new heart valve repair

nine bone fragments said to belong to st. peter. the bones were displayed in a bronze case during a mass commemorating the end of the vatic vatican's year long celebration. the fragments were discovered in 1939 and no pope has definitively declared them to be peter's. some archaeologists dispute their legitimacy. an acid tank exploded in florida. a crew at a phosphate plant was doing routine maintenance on an empty tank when it suddenly erupted. firefighters say the top of the tank through about 100 feet into the air. one worker suffered a broken arm, the other a chest injury. both are expected to be okay. investigators are still looking for the cause of that explosion. a developing story at 5:20 in china. rescue crews searching for survivors after two cargo ships sank. the ships both sank off the china east coast. 25 sailors are missing right now. the body of one sailor has been recovered. we're told one sank today, the

other yesterday after the ship reported engine failure. and take a look at what's going on in indonesia. the government there evacuating thousands of people who live near one of the country's most active volcanos. it is continuing to erupt. there were six eruptions this morning alone. lava and gas shot almost a mile into the air there. ash from that volcano covering farms and villages more than 40 miles away. >> the cold blast is causing lake effect winds in ohio. take a look at the frigid waters of lake erie. strong winds are churning up waves crashing along the lakefront leaving icicles dangling near cleveland. looks cold. >> a number of people waking up at the airport after icy conditions forced airlines to cancel their flights in the dallas-ft. worth airport, canceled about 300 flights yesterday. that's about a third of its daily departures. the airport says it has at the icing equipment ready to go to get flights in the air.

airports along the east coast are keeping a wary on on this storm as well. it could hit them hard just as you get ready to head out of town for the thanksgiving holiday. dealing with it now in texas. we need to brace ourselves for later in the week. >> it really feels like winter now. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here with your forecast. weather and traffic on the 1s, tom? good morning. there's a live view from our city camera. we have a clear sky and mercifully that wind we had yesterday gusting around 40 miles an hour, that wind has died down tremendously. as we approach dawn on this monday, look at these temperatures. we are down just into the teens to near 20 degrees and that includes prince george's county, much of montgomery county, the rest of northern virginia into the shenandoah valley.

most locations in the teens. 11 degrees there now. winchester up to martinsburg, charles a town, hagerstown in the mid-teens to near 20 degrees. in the teens out in the mountains low to mid-20s on the bay waters. and for the day as we get into the afternoon hours, we will have our temperatures gradually getting above freezing. our temperature graph. we'll have lots of sun this morning, high clouds noontime. by then noontime ought to be right around freezing, but then it should be in the upper 30s by midafternoon. and then this evening with a lot of clouds around it will not be as cold. temperatures drifting back down to the mid-30s during the evening bottoming out low 30s tomorrow morning. overnight tonight, by the way, the skins are playing at fedex field and for the game the kickoff is at 8:30 taking on the 49ers. it will be cold and cloudy for the game. should be in the mid-30s at kickoff of time. holding steady through the game with a lot of clouds around. and then tomorrow we are going 0 to get perhaps, here is the timing on this, some sleet and maybe a little bit of wet snow mixing in. this is as of 2:00 on tuesday

looking at the stories making headlines now at 5:30, at least 13 people are dead this morning after a huge storm sweeps across the country. it is bringing several inches of snow across the southwest and could cause huge problems for millions of thanksgiving travelers. we are waiting to find out who officially won the race for virginia attorney general. the state will certify the results today although a recount is expected. and almost one year later police will release new he details today about last year's shooting at sandy hook elementary that left 26 people dead. and here at home you will need to bundle up this morning, really bundle up. temperatures are down by frigid right now, and this is just the beginni beginning. >> we are tracking major changes in our weather and the timing couldn't be worse. wintry weather moving across the

country, and it could seriously mess with your travel plans. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein tracking it all for us. good morning. all is calm and quiet. now the wind has died down. those temperatures are frigid. prepare accordingly. you need your warmest winter gear for the day ahead. quite a bit of sunshine. by 8:00 in the mid-20s. by noontime low of 30s and then by midafternoon hitting the upper 30s with some increasing high clouds. ahead of the storm system moving in tomorrow. right now look at our wind the wind is blowing around 5 to 10 miles an hour, it feels like it is down into the teens. much of the region, that includes right by the bay from the eastern shore, all the way across maryland, virginia and many locations wind chills in the teens. temperatures are in the teens to near 20 degrees. now, danella, how is the monday traffic now? well, tom, unfortunately metro is seeing delays because of a signal problem at stadium armory. taking the orange or blue line

expect delays in both directions. over to the roadways, still pretty clear out as far as volume, very late. going to head out i-66 traveling westbound at prince william parkway. there is an accident here. now shoot over to folks traveling along 395 northbound at seminary road. northbound picking up some volu volume. folks are waking up. no delays as you continue towards all the way here. as you make your way on the southeast/sout sell the new nuclear deal with iran. many republicans and democrats are skeptical this agreement will keep iran from trying to build a nuclear weapon. tracie potts is live on capitol hill now with more. tracie, good morning. aaron, good morning. that . >> reporter: iran scaling back its nuclear program without being forced to.

iranian diplomats return to tehran with a list of things they'll need to do based on this temporary agreement. they're going to have to stop building a nuclear reactor, reduce existing stockpile of enriched uranium, the stuff that makes nuclear weapons potent and also create less enriched uranium in the future. not enough to build a nuclear weapon. they'll also have to submit to daily inspections. in return for all of that, the u.s. and these five other countries are going to unfreeze some of iran's accounts around the world so they can tap in and get $7 billion in money and hold off on any new economic sanctions until they resume talks. another agreement expected in about six months. reaction is a historic mistake and here on capitol hill both democrats and republicans are skeptical that iran will actually follow through. go ahead and put stronger sanctions in place just in case

that doesn't happen. aaron? tracie potts on the hill for us. thank you, tracie. new this morning, nearly three dozen people linked to a deadly attack on a u.s. consulate will appear in court this week. the saudi court already sev sentenced one man to death and 19 others to prison for the 2004 attack. five consulate workers were killed in the battle. the u.s. thinks al qaeda planned it. egypt's interim president band public gatherings without government approval imposing hefty fines and prison terms for violators. the new law would require a three-day notice for all protests including gathering at places of worship. rights groups and activistses rejected the new law. we are still seeing the fallout from u.s. road strikes in pakistan. thousands tried to block trucks carrying nato supplies to and from afghanistan. police prevented them from doing that. they say they will keep trying to block shipments until the

u.s. stops drone attacks in the country. 5:34 right now. breaking news out of northeast d.c. news 4's megan mcgrath just arrived at the scene along the metro tracks. megan? >> reporter: well, aaron, you can see behind me here one of the trains that's just stopped on the tracks, and you can see inside through the windows there that there are people onboard. they have an issue here with an arcing insulator outside the benning road station. and they have had to single track through the area as a result of that. now just within the last few moments we've heard from metro and they say that the problem has now been resolved and so things should be getting back to normal. as you can see we're still looking at one train that is sitting here on the tracks. we have another one slowly approaching up here on the overpass up ahead. delays, we were told, were about 12 minutes but, again, metro saying they have fixed the problem and that things should be returning to normal shortly. reporting live in northeast, megan mccgrath, news 4. back to you. on this day 50 years ago our

pressure to change the team's name. this time it's coming from community leaders in the county where they play. today the coalition of prince george's county leaders will call on owner dan snyder to change the skins name. the group will make the announcement about a half mile from fedex field where the redskins play tonight. maryland will sign a deal with nasa today in the hopes of bringing in more high-tech business. that deal will be signed at the godard space flight center in greenbelt. the senator says it will enable future nasa missions and turn research into marketable products. godard houses the largest group of scientists and engineers developing technology for space exploration. bicyclists will have a new lane to use on "m" street. ddot begins installing today. it will run westbound between 14th and 28 streets just over a mile. flexible poles will be installed and green paint will mark the lane. construction will take place between the morning and evening

rush and impact curbside parking along "m" street. it should be ready in four to six weeks. funeral services for a student shot and killed by a security officer. services for tyler thisaway will be held in lubbock, texas. he had a fight in an off campus women's dorm. a campus memorial will likely take place after thanksgiving. strong winds from the wintry weather fanning the flames of this wildfire in northern california. the fire is burning in a steep, rugged area. more than 1,000 firefighters working to put out those flames. more than 3,000 acres burned at this point. the fire is just about 35% contained right now. a nearby power plant evacuated. that fire started on fry day. no injuries reported. closer to home a prince george's county fire destroyed several vehicles and a towing business. this video is new of the

alex alexandria, generally in the low 20s. and it's in the low 20s right on the bay. any breeze off the bay feels milder. and further west and north it's only in the low to mid-teens now. it's a clear start to the day, and don't have any clouds around. during the day some high clouds drifting in. our future weather. now the leading edge of rain coming our way may be mixing with sleet and wet snow. the areas in pink and green are rain. by mid morning tomorrow, this may be a little bit of sleet and wet snow but nothing accumulating just west and northwest. elsewhere cold rain. into the afternoon hours that will change over to all rain moderate to briefly they have offy downpours coming in tuesday night and into wednesday. and then it may end as wet snow on wednesday afternoon. between now and then a lot of changes. i know a lot of us have friends and relatives who are going to be visiting us.
