start to lure in shoppers. more than a dozen stores opened at 8:00 last night. then the rest of them opened at midnight to big crowds. big crowds, early shopping this morning at fair lakes shopping center in fairfax. the big turnout has been seen across the country at malls all over the place. jay gray is live at the mall of america. jay, of all the assignments you could get, my friend, i know this has got to be a tough one. >> reporter: yeah, erika, you gave me your list, so i have a lot of shopping to do. the crowds have been building all day long. tens of thousands of people searching for bargains on what's become an unofficial shopping holiday. one that, this year, is expanding. this year, black friday actually began on gray thursday, otherwise known as thanksgiving. >> dinner is cooked, my belly is

full and i'm ready shop. >> reporter: and shop and shop and shop and shop. dozens of retailers decided to start things a day earlier this year in part because a late thanksgiving means six less shopping days this season. >> we were encouraged with what we saw last night. the customers were out in droves. they were excited and shopping. >> reporter: not all were excited about the idea. >> they should all be closed on thanksgiving. it's thanksgiving. >> reporter: rolling into black friday, the day that is all about bucks. not that kind. this kind. some shopping until they literally drop. others finding any place they can taking a nap. even santa can get sleepy on a hectic day that has seemed to wake up the retail industry. >> with the government shutdown,

consumer confidence is low. a lot of factors played into a conservative consumer. i think there's a pent up desire and they are showing it now. >> reporter: some plan to show it all weekend long. >> eat, shop, go home, come back and shop again. >> reporter: tireless dedication to bag the best deals they can find. a pretty good deal for retailers during a season that for many seasons counts for 20% to 40% of their annual sales. live at the mall of america, i'm jay gray, back to you. >> thanks so much. happy shopping. there was a black friday shopper in virginia who was stabbed in the walmart parking lot. one man grabbed a knife and cut the other man's arm to the bone.

big time retailers are seeing plenty of eager shoppers for black friday. tomorrow, tomorrow is when the little guys shine. it's called small business saturday. it aims to bring in support for the locally owned shops. in alexandria, clerks are sporting shirts that say small is the new black. this year, store owners in oldtown formed a bigger than ever alliance to promote small business saturday. >> we are all in this together. we are trying hard to make it work. small businesses are the first ones to fall out. we don't have the deep pocketbooks that some of the big companies have. >> coming up at 5:00, david culver will be live in oldtown for more on tomorrow's big effort. alexandria is offering you a cheap and easy way to get to your favorite stores.

the trolley started running to get you there to shop. the trolley will run every 15 minutes until 10:15 tonight and is absolutely froo free. lots of stores are offering discounts up to 30% right now. the washington suburban sanitary commission is hoping to have the water back up and runninging in rockville. over the scene earlier, you can see the huge mess it made of that road. this is south lawn lane. we are told the break impacted 44 customers including the animal shelter. no word on what caused the break. police say a maryland woman fought off an attempted sexual assault this morning. she was just about to take the trash out. this is before 2:00 on possum court in capital heights. that's when a man hit her, knocked her to the ground, she managed to get away after a brief struggle. police brought in a canine unit

and helicopter to search for the suspect. they did not make any arrests. police trying to figure out what led to a deadly shooting in landover on west street. investigators think it stemmed from a dispute following an after hours thanksgiving party. someone shot a man inside his car. he later died at the hospital. his name has not been released. nine protesters arrested including one employee. itis part of the effort to convince the retailer to up the salaries of its workers. still, as derrick ward found out, many walmart workers are happy with what they make. >> reporter: here in alexandria, a good crowd of black friday shoppers. the earliest risers were treated to something more than waiting. it's about the rae tail wages.

>> making sure people know while they are shopping and giving their business to this company, it's not sharing that with the workers. >> i get paid low wages as a customer service manager. $12,000 i made last year. >> reporter: they are pressing for $25,000 annual for retail employees, a livable wage. the need is evident during the busiest time of the year, holiday shopping season. protesters say they can serve customers, but find it hard to join them. this woman is part of a two-income household. a lot of people who are widowed or single it's hard to do when you are paid low wages. >> i know people protest about that. i have no problem, you know, with the salary i make. >> reporter: this walmart worker says between the salary and the discounts he gets, it's a good gig. >> walmart is one of the companies that offers great

opportunities to go from the bottom to the top. it's basically up to you. >> walmart is not treating its workers right. >> reporter: it was to inform the public. the protests were part of an effort to raise salaries for employees. it happened nationwide but not in maryland. a judge issued a junction against them protesting on walmart property. >> walmart released this statement in afternoon. black friday is a big stage. we are not surprised those trying to change our industry are using this platform to get their message out. we expect some demonstrations at our stores though fewer than what the critics are claiming and with hardly any actual walmart associates participating. the first family getting into the spirit of christmas. mr. obama along with her daughters and dogs greeted the

official christmas tree. they have a douglass fir from pennsylvania. we are told it's 18.5 feet tall. it will be decorated and displayed in the blue room throughout the holiday season. president obama and the first lady visited with a group of activists they are fasting to protest the house of representatives in action on immigration reform. they are in their 18th day of going without food. the activists are camped out on the national mall in an attempt to pressure republicans to vote on immigration reform. the senate passed a bipartisan bill in june. earlier this month, john boehner ruled out a vote on immigration reform this year. romney to the rescue. the story behind this photo of one of romney's sons after he saved four people. actually, that's not the photo. we'll bring it to you in a couple minutes. what caused police to chase

are you ready for this? black friday got violent in illinois. police in the town of romeoville shot at man caught shoplifting at kohl's. the man ran out to a get away car. one officer got caught in the

car door and was dragged. another shot the driver before he could leave the parking lot. a third suspect was arrested inside the store. a fake bomb threat ruined thanksgiving in san diego. traffic was shut down for two hours yesterday afternoon. look at that back up. a woman was driving on the freeway and got a phone call. that caller told her there was a bomb in her car. police shut down the freeway in both directions to investigate. there was no bomb. the caller was the woman's brother playing a joke. he's now facing felony charges. a group of women will try to break the record for the largest all female sky diving formation in arizona. look at this. from one of their practice jumps, this is video from yesterday. you can see the women kind of making some type of formation there. what they are going to try to do is go more than 41 women. that's the current record. they are going maybe 42, i don't know. what are you trying to do there?

all right. if you are hitting the mall this weekend, or if you are holding out for cyber monday, listen to this. they say you learn something new every day and i have. a financial magazine put together some of the top items that aren't offered much of a discount on black friday. according to the magazine, shoppers won't be getting the best deals on big screen tvs. i was going to get one. i was contemplating. the best deal is before the super bowl on those. luggage is cheaper in march when holiday travel is over. winter equipment like skis and coats are at the lowest prices in the spring. >> now you know. >> now you know. >> if you are having a hard time deciding what to buy your

start for tomorrow morning. look at this, areas west of prince williams, fauquier county, 20 to 22 degrees under a clear sky. cold conditions. then the clouds will be coming in throughout the area tomorrow. i think generally from east to west, 40 to 42 degrees is the high temperature for your saturday. here is a look at the next couple days on your storm team four day forecast from 42 saturday to 42 on sunday. upper 40s to mid-50s by friday this time. that will be the next best chance of rain, by the way. no big weather systems to deal with. friday, maybe rainshowers coming into the area. sunday, the high of 47 degrees. as i said, i sunday, i think there's the possibility of passing showers near the coast. when i return, maybe you have family in town. i'll take a look at the travel forecast for the weekend. not just here, but across the country. that's coming up in news 4. back to you guys. and the winner is -- chief

the weekends. small business saturday is tomorrow. 70% of businesses in old town alexandria is locally owned and open tomorrow. a 12-inch water main burst this morning. we are told the impact was 44 customers including the county's animal shelter. police are looking for suspects in a deadly shooting in prince george's county. it happened after a party in landover. investigators think it stemmed from a fight after a late night thanksgiving party. just one day left for the affordable care act's website. the white house said healthcare.gov would be working smoothly tomorrow. daniellelee is live on capitol hill with more on what the administration is trying to do to get people signed up. >> reporter: we were warned

tomorrow is not a magical day. the website is moving more quickly and experiencing fewer errors. government web designers have a lot of sympathy for the tech experts rushing to fix healthcare.gov. >> with the scrutiny, it's a challenge. >> reporter: the administration says the website increased the speed and decreased error rate supporting 50,000 users at once. with poll records at lows, the focus is on president obama. >> until they get it running smoothly, it's going to be hard to focus on other elements of the law. >> reporter: this week, the administration delayed online enrollment. another setback could deter people from signing up. keeping premiums low and not particularly in a rush to get covered.

>> i just haven't gotten around to it yet, i think. >> health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius posted shopping tips online reminding people to avoid peak hours saying the website is improving, but still a work in progress. determining how much the website improved after tomorrow could be difficult because the administration only releases enrollment numbers once a month. the family of a d.c. national guardsman whose body was found says the death was an accident. his body was found floating in baltimore on wednesday. his family says he died accidentally after leaving a bar with friends and walking toward his parked car. he was named the d.c. international guard airman of the year. his parents say they will accept the award on his behalf this week.

a team of volunteers launching a searching if a missing teen. she was last seen in august at a gas station. the 17-year-old from nelson county told her family she was going to lynchburg the night she disappeared. her car was found in a parking lot three days later. police arrested randy taylor in connection with her disappearance. her cell phone last pinged near his home. sunday morning, volunteers will search along highway 29 around the area where murphy was last seen. if you are a fan of the food trucks, get ready to see changes on monday. >> that's right. new parking rules could cost you big bucks. mark segraves explains. >> reporter: beginning monday, the district will reserve spaces for 95 food trucks in eight downtown locations. like the square and plaza.

the food trucks get the same space 30 days. each month the lottery determines which truck gets which space. once in full swing, customers will know what trucks will be in their neighborhood that month. food trucks without spaces will be able to operate as long as they park legally. another change is along here where the streetcars are going to go in. come monday, trucks parked like this, outside the white line will get a $100 fine. cars and trucks need to stay inside the white lines so the streetcars will be able to pass. even though the streetcars won't be running until next year, district officials want to send the message to drivers they will need to park within the white line. in the district, mark segraves, news 4. it has only been a few hours, but we have preliminary results from black friday. the top sellers so far this season. if you are one of the

a massive fire destroyed a pie shop in the houston area this morning. you can see, look at this shop completely engulfed in flames. a family friend says it shop was run by a woman who also lived in

the house connected to it. the owner wasn't home at the time. two other people were inside, but both made it out safely. investigators say the fire appeared to start in the kitchen area. i want to show newly released video of a deadly crane collapse. you can see the moment the crane fell on the stadium being built for the world cup. two workers were killed there. police say they plan to interview the operator of the crane today. yesterday, a safety engineer warned the supervisors it was sitting on unstable soil. the construction company denied the claim. check out this pretty massive fire ball after a gas line exploded in missouri. the blast was so powerful that people felt it 15 miles away. this is about an hour and a half east of kansas city. no one was hurt. it took crews several hours to put out the fire. the company that owns it says a

shoppers who hit the stores a day early spared no expense. walmart released the list of top selling items from last night's preblack friday frenzy. let's break it down. leading the pack were big screen tvs, apple ipad minis, the x-box one and play station fours. no surprise there. customers also bought nearly 3 million towels. i mean, if i'm waking up at 4:00 a.m., i don't go, god, i'm in need of towels. i need towels. they sold 300,000 bicycles and 2 million dolls last night. >> while you are shopping, you want to be careful how you use

that's gotten bigger and bigger is the tree lighting in reston, virginia. it's where doug kammerer finds himself. >> reporter: it is a beautiful night out here. a little bit on the cold side. we are not talking rain or snow. the winds calmed down. it's good news. outside, a ton of people along the ice rink. just over this way, you have the tree. a lot of people are getting ready for the tree lighting. they are expecting 5,000 people here for the evening. we have santa claus coming. he's going to help out. angie gosk is going to be emceeing this. we have a lot going on. let's take you through and show you the temperature if you are thinking of coming down. it will be packed. temperatures around 6:00 around the tree lighting, around the freezing mark and dropping to 30 degrees by 10:00. once again, you are looking at a very cold night if you are going to be out here, bundle up. we have a lot of deals going on here, the stores are open.

the restaurants are open. come down to reston town center, say hello. we'll be here at 5:00 and 6:00. in an hour and a half, that tree, right there, getting lit up by santa claus. pretty cool. >> thanks a lot, doug. very cool. again, chilly conditions for the evening. let's take a look at the forecast for tomorrow. our temperatures will be rising into the low 40s. leesburg up to 40 degrees. warrenton, 41. 41 in culpeper. i'm calling it cool. unfortunately, the sky is going to turn mostly cloudy. the idea tomorrow is clouds increasing across the area. as far as metro areas and southern areas of maryland, 42 is the high temperature to 43 in huntingtown. this is the area that will pick up more cloud cover across the afternoon and evening hours. there may be isolated shower across southern maryland after midnig midnight. what to expect, an early shower. clouds for the first part of the

day with more sunshine by the afternoon and evening on sunday. that's why it gets my pick as the best day out of the weekend. 44 to 49 degrees is the range in temperatures on sunday. now, some folks are doing a bit of traveling this weekend. we are not loong at any major storms. cool conditions throughout the weekend. to the north, lake-effect snow showers. with the system that's going to clip southern maryland, possibility of showers along the coast. south carolina, georgia to the pacific northwest. this is the only storm system that may cause flight delays for anybody that's got to travel back anywhere this weekend. that's the way it's looking now. no big storm systems for the weekend. really, over the next couple days around here. we'll watch the temperatures rise into the upper 40s for sunday. 48 degrees is the high temperature on monday. mostly cloudy with the partly sunny sky on tuesday. then we hit the low and mid-50s

her a hateful note and no tip because she's gay. she's raised thousands of dollars. now a fellow marine and co-worker are speaking out against her. brin has the story. >> hurting other people. >> reporter: jackie says she waited tables with dana at this cheesecake factory. she says she became friends with her and grew sympathetic when she said she had brain cancer. >> she came in with her hair shaved. she wanted to shave it herself before she lost it. people helped her and donated things. >> she and her co-workers believed she never had cancer. >> reporter: she says the next time they heard about morales was on tv, when she said she was stiffed on a tip and received a hateful message on the credit card receipt. what was your reaction to that?

>> really? i definitely know this girl and she's still up -- there's something wrong. there's something wrong. >> i watched it and i was speechless. >> this marine was stationed with her in new york. she skyped with us and asked we not show her face because she is in active duty. a pentagon source says they dishonorably released her. >> i take being in the marine corps seriously and wouldn't want anybody to look at somebody like dana who is causing trouble, i wouldn't want anybody to think she was part of my marine corps family because she's not. >> reporter: they expect to close the internal investigation soon. for now, they confirm she is off the waitress schedule and last check, she raised $3,000 in donations from the story. >> anybody that donated money or sent her anything, i think
