live in ston. hi, doug. >> reporter: we are live for one important event. we are done with thanksgiving. that was during the day yesterday. today black friday. it's really the start of the holiday season as we head toward christmas. coming up at 6:00, they are lighting the tree here at reston town center. there's a ton of people. they are telling me they expect close to 5,000 people. it will be wall-to-wall people. you won't be able to move that much. we encourage you to come down. we have a lot of performances starting now. frosty the snowman is over there. rudolph is there. the next hour, angie is going to be here. the current temperature in reston, 38 degrees.

morning. 44 customers have been without water for several hours. that includes the county's animal shelter. no word on what caused the break. a sinkhole that swallow an suv in maryland has been closed up. it was caused by a water main break thursday. nearly 200 people were without water until 4:00 yesterday afternoon. crews were out this morning repairing the pipe and filling in the sinkhole. traffic is back to normal in that area. wow. 15,000 people. that's how many shoppers were in line at midnight for the opening of macy's store in new york city. that beats last year's record of 11,000. look at this. as soon as the doors open in nearby new jersey, cops had to pepper spray a man inside a

walmart store. he got into an argument with another shopper over a tv. that man is now in jail. more than a dozen stores opened at 8:00. the rest of them opened at midnight. bustling crowds in search of big bargains got their hands on deep discounts. retailers said the turnout was an encouraging sign for the season. one guy stole clothes from a kohl's store and jumped into a get away car. a second officer shot the driver. both the driver and the officer are in the hospital. two others went to jail. dozens of people protested outside this walmart in chicago on black friday. it's part of a nationwide effort organized by labor groups to convince the largest retailer to raise the salaries of its workers. in chicago, ten people, including two walmart workers

were arrested for blocking the roadway. a similar protest outside this walmart store in alexandria. nine people arrested there including one employee. their message was the same, higher wages. walmart defended the labor practices saying their pay is higher than averages. a lot of walmart workers are happy with what they make. >> reporter: shoppers weren't the only ones on verging on that walmart but protesters took to route one to make a point. some took it to an extreme. >> we want to raise awareness so people going into walmart how the workers are treated. >> reporter: the concern is how they are paid. tiffany is a customer service manager at walmart. >> $12,000 last year i made.

our cuts changing on the computer. >> reporter: these protesters are pushing for a livable wage for retail employees, at least 25,000 tla$25,000 annually. >> a worker environment that makes them proud of where they work. >> i don't have a problem with it myself. >> reporter: this walmart worker says his experience has been positive. >> walmart is one of the companies that offers great opportunities to go from the bottom to the top. it's basically up to you. >> reporter: the company says retail wages are among the highest and among the few companies that offer benefits like health and retirement plans for retail workers. it's the take home pay they were concerned with. among those arrested, a walmart employee willing to give up the freedom to get the point across. >> people were honking wanting to know what's going on. we were standing up for workers.

>> reporter: the salary protests have become a yearly event. this year, walmart's ceo weighed in. coming up, what he had to say. in alexandria, news 4. walmart released this statement, black friday is a big stage. we are not surprised that those trying to change our industry are use thg platform to get their message out. we expect some demonstrations though fewer than what critics are claiming with hardly any walmart associates. evan was 29 years old. his body was found in the water in baltimore on wednesday. they tell the baltimore sun, he died after leaving the bar with friends and walking on his own to his parked car. news 4 has been reporting on

the rise in heroin deaths in montgomery county. darcy spencer is here with more on what one mom is going to fight this problem. darcy? >> reporter: for this mom, it's personal. she lost two nephews within three months, one addicted to heroin, the other to prescription medications. she's taking the message to parents at her daughter's high school. >> it's an epidemic of the suburbs. >> she's talking about heroin. a drug that more and more young people are injecting into their vains to get a quick and dangerous high. >> don't be fooled and think it can't apply to your child. >> reporter: rachel knows the devastation of addiction firsthand. she lost two nephews, a football star and bobby, a brilliant 17-year-old took his own life with a cocktail of painkillers and rum as he was about to enter

treatment. >> the grief was so devastating. i was really, didn't function for about a year, literally. >> reporter: she says she's made it a mission to understand and educate about drug addiction. she spearheaded mandatory parent meetings in september at the high school in rockville, where her daughter is a student to warn parents. >> you have to get people there. you have to get parents willing to come. if the only way they are willing to come is to call it mandatory, then so be it. >> reporter: heroin abuse is on the rise across the country. here in montgomery county, at least 13 people died from overdosing on the drug jins june. >> if i can get to one parent to have them understand what they have at risk because you just don't want to figure this out after they are dead. or after they are already addicted. >> reporter: she says reluctant parents thanked her for her presentations. >> you could end up saving the life of your child, the life of

families group. two of the activists have not eaten for 18 days hoping to get the senate to pass reform. earlier this month, house speaker john boehner ruled out vote for reform this year. the official christmas tree is now here. mrs. obama and her daughters welcomed the tree. the farmers who grew that tree, if you are lucky enough to have a ticket for a white house tour, you can see the tree covered in decorations. it is part of a holiday tradition that goes back decades. ♪ >> reporter: a little better than being strapped to the roof of a chevy, a horse drawn carriage arrived carrying the official white house christmas tree for 2013. first lady michelle obama followed tradition along with her daughters and puppies and

morning. it happened in capitol heights. the woman told officers he approached her just before 2:00 this morning, striking her in the head. she fought him off and he ran. police are still looking for him. new developments on whether brazil will be able to host the world cup. here is a look at the deadly crane collapse. it collapsed on part of the stadium. it killed two workers on wednesday. soccer officials assessing the damage before they make a final decision on whether they can still host the world cup opener next june. we are now less than 24 hours away from the self-imposed deadline set by the obama administration for major improvements to the health care reform website. here is where we are on this friday, the 29th. they have a deadline for tomorrow, saturday the 30th. the white house said it is

fines in one part of town if you don't park within the lines. >> in other parts of the city, there's limits to where food trucks can park. >> mark segraves has the details now, before you head back to work. >> reporter: the tracks are in and the wires are up. even the streetcars won't be running along h street northeast until next year, the fines for blacking the path start monday. you must park inside this white line or you'll get a $100 fine. while there's plenty of room for the cars and the curb, for the minnesota deliver trucks that serve the bars, restaurants and stores, it's another story. the plan is to have big trucks park on the side streets in the neighborhoods or nearby alleys. >> happy slugs. >> reporter: this business owner is happy to see the streetcars come in. >> it will be more work for the delivery guys, unfortunately.

the temperatures. here is the good night wake up forecast. 37 degrees at 9:00 this evening. that will be when everything starts wrapping up there, probably. 34 degrees. we are cool and cold by 11:00. 27 to 30 degrees is how we are going to start the day tomorrow. high clouds streaming in. the one location across the area that favors the most cloud cover is down across southern maryland where temperatures are topping out around 42 to 43 degrees. so, i'm calling it cool. sunday, the clouds will start moving out we are at 44 to 49 degrees. more sunshine expected sunday than what we'll have saturday. the travel forecast for the country right now, the only storm system that i see hitting the country this weekend, up here in the pacific northwest. when you have to get out of town, no issues, what so ever in terms of the weather. watch what happens with the temperatures as we move through the mid part of next week and the latter part of next week.

that's when they say the harassment began. >> the cashier took her counterfeit pen, checked all bills. the 100s had to be checked by a supervisor. >> she told her not to accept the money. security video bye bye baby provided shows some of the exchange. it's not clear which employee is narrating the video. >> and now the three suspects are clearing their pockets of all the counterfeit bills. >> someone else said do you have another form of payment because i feel uncomfortable with your bills. i said how? she said it doesn't meet the requirements. all of your money. all of your money. >> reporter: they say the supervisor threatened to call the police if they did not leave. >> i said i'm going to stand my ground. i don't have counterfeit money. >> reporter: after examining the bills, one officer said the bills looked good.

>> i asked for a formal apology. she said i don't have to apologize. proceeded back to the register, she said your money is still no good. >> reporter: bye bye baby denies the employees said that. they believe they were the victims of racial discrimination. there was probable cause to support the allegations saying they were discriminated while shopping. in a statement, bye bye beabl said they have zero tolerance for any form of discrimination and the allegations are still very much underreview. the company says when the incident occurred an internal memo was sent to all stores warning about an influx of realistic counterfeit 100 dollar bills. they can now sl their case heard by a judge who will make a final determination. they hope by coming forward, they can present the same from happening to others.
