show that thanksgiving day shoppers gobbled up black friday's sales that were down more than 13%. that has many black friday shoppers surprised. >> all the parking garages were full. the mall, i literally was shuffling through people. it was bad. >> so you are surprised that the numbers were down? >> yeah, definitely. >> while black friday numbers are down, if you look at thursday and friday combined, spending rose 2.3% from last year. that signals a shift. and americans going from dinner table to the shopping mall to get a head start on the deals. >> these extra promotions and these extra hours may have cut in to our dinner time, with but it boosted the retailers. >> reporter: at least a dozen major retailers opened on thanksgiving this year, shoppers responded in record numbers and according to date a online sales were up on thanksgiving by nearly 20%.
