doug kammerer is tracking it all for us. >> outside right now, we're looking pretty nice. even though we saw plenty of cloud cover. today we are looking at temperatures near the 60-degree mark in many locations. let me show you what we're dealing with. warm today for sure. that roller coaster ride is continuing as we continue on the up swing. here are the temperatures now. 57 today. 64 in culpeper, and we will get warmer during the day tomorrow. we continue to go up on a roller coaster, and then we come crashing down this weekend. we have a chance for rain, yes, snow and ice coming in across the region. first it's going to be the rain. that moves in on friday. the rain/snow/ice mixture moves in the weekend. i'll show you when in my full forecast in just a minute. we have breaking news right now out of prince george's county. news 4 just learned it's not looking good for one of the three proposals for the new casino. tracee wilkins is live where she just confirmed new details on

the parks casino site. it's right over here on port road or indiana head highway. six consulting firms have been reviewing the quay see know sites. they study things like traffic impact and fiscal imports. but we have confirmed that yes, one of the casino locations, the one proposed here in ft. washington is going to have a tough fight with the video lottery commission. they are proposing an $800 million parks casino hotel and spa at the intersection of indiana head highway at old ft. road and ft. washington. this is the largest proposal of all of them. 4700 slot machines, nearly 200 table games and 450 hotel rooms. plus, they promise $150 million for road improvements to indiana head highway. sources close to this process

told me the bed is out after review for independent consultants. just moments ago i spoke with a park spokesperson that told my they disagree. our third party experts that are very similar and have worked with the consultant. the reports will comment and have a different viewpoint on some of the assumptions. >> and i'm assuming that some of the issues that they were discussing had to do with traffic. >> some are about traffic. many, though, are about location. now tomorrow there's going to be a public hearing where all the work done by the consultants will be made public. all the casinos will have an opportunity to argue their cases

if necessary. i spoke with them. the other two casinos are vying for a new license at prince george's county. i'll have their response to this coming up at news 4 at 6:00. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. a woman is in the hospital after being shot by police inside her house. we're told officers were called to 43rd avenue here in hyatte school to deal with a woman who had been behaving strangely. at some point police tell us the woman threatened officers with a knife. police say the woman has a history of mental health problems. she is expected to survive. a woman is speaking out tonight after police shot and killed her grandson. this happened during a shootout along queens street in d.c.'s trinidad neighborhood last night. pat collins is live for us on the scene tonight. >> reporter: jim, a gunfight with police leaves a teenager dead and his family in mourning. last night own queen street, she heard the shots.

>> i heard six or seven, and they just went pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. >> last night she looked out the window of the home and saw the body of her grandson lying on the pavement across the street. >> ain't nobody out there to help him at the time. he was just laying there. >> reporter: shot and killed, darius maur fi. he was 19 years old. he went down in a gunfight with police right near his grandmother's home on queen street. miss murphy says her grandson darius was in and out of trouble with the law for some time. she said she tried to keep away but he kept going back, and down the street is where it all began last night. she says there were a group of men there. police from the gun recovery

unit came by. they tried to talk with murphy. there was a chase. the police tape goes from house to house to house. at one point darius murphy turns, fires a shot, and wounds a cop. police return fire. and darius murphy is hit and falls dead on the street right in front of his grandmother's house. >> he was hanging out with a bad crowd. >> down there, yes, sir. >> did you try to talk to him about it? >> we talk to him every day. every time we see him we talk to him. >> but you kept going back. >> kept going back. >> and now he's gone. >> reporter: now police are continuing to investigate the incident. they want to know more about what happened here on queen street last night. live in the northeast, pat collins, news 4. a violent day at several schools in the south. news 4's scott macfarlane at the

live desk what with what we know now. about an hour ago a suspect was arrested for shooting a student there. the shooting happened at west orange high school near orlando in florida. there was an argument at a soccer field where the buses were waiting to pick up students. that's when police say the suspect opened fire. the student who was shot is in the hospital. and a short time later a student stabbed at another high school in georgia. no word on the con of the student. tonight we are learning new details about the shooting rampage last year inside sandy hook elementary. the 911 tapes have just been released. some of the calls came from inside the school as gunman adam lanza opened fire. nbc news has decided not to air any of those calls. but we are reviewing those transcripts. and jay gray joins us live with

what the calls tell us about what happened in there. >> hey, as you can imagine, the tapes are chilling. the 911 dispatcher urging teachers to lock their doors, keep the students safe and instructing another faculty member to keep pressure on a gunshot wound. there are still, though, many who say these should have never been made public. it is a day the survivors and families of the victims at the sandy hook massacre have been dreading. the release of 911 calls for that day. a painful reminder of the horror and heart ache they've endured for almost a full year now. a judge released the calls despite pleas from family and community leaders who were concerned about the additional trauma that could come from hearing the recordings. nicole's son died in the attack. she talked with andrea mitchell earlier this week. >> we don't feel the 911 calls

should have been released. it will affect our community certainly, and it will affect our families. >> reporter: nbc news will comply with the wishes of many of the family who is ask that the 911 audio not be aired. two frantic teachers called for help. a custodian stayed on the phone. multiple gunshots could be heard in the background during the call. the 911 operators remained focused, steady during the calls. at one point hoping a teacher made sure her classroom door was locked and urging her to keep the children safe and calm. >> i'm much better at dealing with the facts. the father says he believes the calls should be heard. >> there will be less confusion and less people making up stories about what happened. >> reporter: the truth is painful enough for a community

still struggling to heal. now one thing everyone agrees on is the timing of the release is making it more difficult. just ten days away from the anniversary of the tragedy. live in new york, jay gray, news 4. a university of virginia professor pleaded not guilty to child pornography charges. michael morris appeared in federal court. he logged onto a child important sharing site 200 times between january and october. at least once using his university e-mail address. morris is an associate dean at graduate programs and professor for the university school of commerce. a medical emergency led to a crash in prince george's county. a woman had some sort of medical problem before causing an

accident just outside the beltway along annapolis road this morning. we are told that woman is in critical condition. no one else is seriously hurt. tonight police in montgomery county are looking for a man who robbed a bank in bethesda. witnesses tell police the man walked into the bank and old georgetown road and cheshire drive. right now police are looking at the bank security cameras to come up with a suspect description. take a look at these guys in the surveillance photos. they held up a 7-eleven just after midnight. police say they threatened someone in the store with a gun, demanded cash and cigarettes. no one was seriously hurt. if you recognize either of them, give police a call. fbi officials say the looming budget cuts will drastically hamper their ability to protect the country. they say the bureau was

anticipating a budget cut of $700 million as a result of sequestration. and along with cuts to active investigations, agents would likely be furloughed for 10 to 15 days here. >> gang leaders are not furloughed and it's unacceptable thing to do. because of the risks from both terrorist and criminal threats. >> the cuts will also result in a hiring freeze for all of the 2013. >> president obama held a youth summit at the white house. he's urging young people to spread the word about health insurance coverage and to buy some under the affordable care act. now that the website is working well, people should sign up even if they don't think they need insurance. he said he felt the same way in his late 20s. >> aside from the occasional basketball injury, you know,

shopkeepers in one springfield shopping area are still talking tonight about an unexpected intruder. >> along with the black friday crowds, a deer got into huntsman square hitting four stores and causing a lot of damage. >> reporter: david culver is outside with what witnesses saw. talking with folks in the coffee shop and hair salon, it's clear the talk of the deer has not slowed down. talking with employees inside the mall tonight, they tell me it was frightful as they watched a buck tear through their stores. not the usual 911 call for

fairfax police. >> i'm calling from the giant on huntsman square. we have a deer in the store. >> a buck got into this springfield shopping center. inside employees from several stores told us what they saw. >> she was working with me back there. she said, hey, there was a deer. i was like, no, you're kidding me. >> reporter: she was working in subway. >> it was a huge deal. >> reporter: she said it got in through this back door and made its way to giant. >> i walked over to giant and saw it in the produce section. >> reporter: wrapping presents at this children shop, she watched them next. >> it was trapped because the doors are all clear. so it kept thinking it could get out. >> reporter: two more calls came into 911. this time with fear. >> is it acting aggressively? >> yeah, it's going crazy. >> you guys got to get here. it's going to kill somebody.

>> luckily, someone news to cover its face with a sweater, so it didn't see, and then he was able to good it to the front of the mall until animal control came. >> these pictures snapped by others in the mall show the animal being walked outside. his face still covered. animal control was on scene. this one has a combination of hormones and adrenaline. it got spooked spooked somehow. and this forced the dress barn to post in sign on its door. >> they close in three days. >> now, if you have been to the mall, you know there are a lot of surveillance cameras inside. if we can see the videos like those at the giant, the dress barn and management declined to share that video with us. the good news in this is no one was hurt.

i'm david culver, news 4. a debate over plans to widen sidewalks in northeast d.c. have drivers a little upset tonight. the plan is to make wisconsin avenue more pedestrian friendly by narrowing the roads. drivers say this stretch is already congested and narrowing the streets is only going to make things harder. but supporters of the change say they will make wisconsin avenue safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. >> tyson's corner center is the most valuable taxable property in the washington region. a washington business journal reports the 80-acre mall property is now valued at more than $1 billion. the property's assessment went up $25 million in just over a year. it's likely to jump more when the silver line opens up. speaking of big money, the megamillions jackpot is edging closer to $300 million tonight. the jack pot is expected to be

about $291 million. that's the largest it's been all year. powerball on the other hand had crossed the $300 million mark four time this is year. megamillions still claims the biggest jackpot in u.s. history with a $656 million spread between winners in three states back in march of 2012. >> i'm not buying tickets. it's never going to happen. i'm not going to bother. take us out to dinner when you win. >> talk about the warm air first. >> and then the cold numbers start rolling in. it's going to get really chilly around here. first, tonight's little warmup. want to take you up to rockefeller center. take a look at the studios up there in new york city where they are lighting the tree tonight. the station flying me up there in the station helicopter. that is going to be awesome. you dn't know that, did you? yeah, the new komt that i bought with the megamillions winning. that's not happening. but they will be doing that

tonight. 55 degrees right now. the winds are calm. plenty of cloud cover across the region. that's been the case for today. 61 in culpeper. 59 in fredricksburg. so we told you today would be mild. tomorrow, a lot warmer. take a look at the numbers here. 75 in little rock, arkansas. they have a winter storm warning in effect and potential for ice. that will be coming our way. the cold air back to the west. that cold air will make its way our way, too. not any time soon. steam tomorrow 4 radar showing things are all clear. not expecting much in the way of rain for 24 hours or so. can't rule out a few showers during the day tomorrow, but most it it will be dry.

not just mild, but warm. we'll see plenty of cloud cover and temperatures tomorrow into the upper 60s. early friday morning this will be all rain. and then friday afternoon the front moves through. the cold rain starts to fall, and just back to the west, we're talking about rain and snow starting to make its way down to parts of pittsburgh. high temperatures tomorrow. 64 in gaithersburg. very warm day on our thursday. a high of 60 on friday. by friday afternoon we're back to the 40s. a good chance of a mix. we rebound nicely to a high of 52 on monday. any sizable change is very, very quickly done. then we get cold late next week. let's talk more sunday. 4 for a high temperature.

the 911 calls on the shooting at sandy hook elementary were released today and you could hear the panic as teachers inside the school told dispatchers about the gunmen inside. a lot of parents fought to keep them private. we are not airing them at the the parents' requests. at least six deaths are blamed on a wintery storm slamming the northwest with tons of heavy snow. it's creating treacherous driving conditions this evening. hundreds of crashes have already been reported. including one with a state

trooper. >> i think our critical day will be sunday. first tomorrow high temperatures near 70 in some locations. and then it's just downright cold on sunday, and we could be talking about the wintery mix. rain, snow, and ice on sunday. we'll have much more on that coming up in 15 minutes. d.c.'s fire chief in the hot seat today. the city council grilling him about the department staffing and the fleet of vehicles. >> among the questions, how many ambulances and fire trucks the city has and where they are. mark segraves is live now with what the chief had to say today. mark? >> reporter: jim, it was what the chief didn't have to say. the problems with the department's fleet have been well documented over the past year. today the chief was unable to answer specific questions about the balannd fire trucks in the department's fleet. >> i will have to get back to you with an answer. >> that was the response the chief gave when asked why he

didn't budget any money in 201 to buy new vehicles, despite the fact that he knew the chief was in disrepair. they promised an additional 17 ambulances by the end of the year after releasing 13. he testified the department currently has 100 ambulances, but not all of them are working. >> of these 89 are considered abilityive. including front line and out of service for longer than two months. >> reporter: that's more than 10% of the district's balances that have been out of service for at least two months. when the chief was asked questions about fire trucks, there were questions he and his fleet manager couldn't answer. >> how many are certified? >> i don't have the data on that. >> how many do we have? >> he was able to say how many

ladder trucks were certified. >> how many latter trucks are currently certified? >> we have three. >> out of how many? >> out of 26. >> a lack of certification of the fire trucks doesn't mean they can't be used, but it does mean they may not be safe to use. the chief was unable to say when all of the trucks would be certified as safe. when asked by reporters why he couldn't answer questions about the fleet months after the questions were first raised -- >> how could you come into the hearing and not know? it'sot going to look good on tv. >> it may not look good on tv but that's the facts. >> reporter: the chief did boast response times have greatly improved and you'll want to stay tuned at 6:00 because you'll want to see what happened when the chief was asked about the

status of those 13 new ambulances. reporting live, mark segraves, news 4. a warning tonight from federal regulators about problems with the life saving device. certain cardiac defibrylators may not deliver the shock they're supposed to buzz of an electrical problem. phillips recalled the heart start frx and hs1 devices late last year. if you own one, contact phillips for a replacement. newly released surveillance videos show ho part of a fight that ended with a deadly stabbing between two marines. you can see 21-year-old michael appearing to grip something in his hands. prosecutors say they got into an argument outside of a restaurant when one of them said something derogatory. they say it ended with him stabbing another marine.

a jury convicted him of manslaughter this week. tonight wear hearing from the family that filed the first wrongful death lawsuit in the navy yard shooting. the family of mary francis knight filed the suit in tampa. that lawsuit seeks $37 million in damages. the department of veterans affairs, the navy and two defense contractors are all named as defendants and all are accused of negligence. >> the navy didn't do what they were supposed to do. the contractor didn't follow the rules in existence. the subcontractors didn't follow the rules in existence. if they did, this rattlesnake would never have been allowed under the tent and never would have killed our beloved mary. the lault allegations that they did not act on red flags about the mental health of navy gunman aaron alexis.

alexis killed 12 people before he died in a shootout with police in september. tonight police are looking for the gunman who fired shots near a day care center in capitol heights. one person was wounded. the driver sitting inside the day care's marked van was grazed by a bullet. it happened around 6:00 last night in an intersection of shell street and arcadia avenue. no children were hurt, and the shooting victim is expected to be okay. tonight the autopsy report on actor paul walker is out. it shows he was killed by the impact of saturday's car crash, combined with the fire that followed. the star of "the fast & furious" maw vees was a passenger in the car that hit a tree and exploded. rodas died only from the impact of the crash. the next installment of the movies is now on hold. filming for the seventh in the series started in september and

was supposed to resume this week in atlanta. that movie is scheduled for release next july. it's a big day at the white house. the first lady reveals the white house decorations today. the little girl and a dog stole the show. over thanksgiving, thieves stole more than a thousand gallons of heating fuel from a church. this is chris gordon,

the little girls age 6 and 8 set up a prayer request in a balloon this summer and were wishing for a family. that balloon made its way to mchenry, maryland, where it landed in an rv park. the folks there quickly mailed it back. eva and jasmine's foster parents were already planning to adopt the girls, but say it was just the sign they needed. >> i can jesse y'all taking this balloon and blowing it in the right direction for it to be found and sent back to us and tells us he approves of us being able to adopt the girls.

>> two cute little girls. the judge finalized the adoption yesterday making the family complete just in time for the holidays. cute! well, some of our wednesday's children are still looking for a home, and this week we spoke to a teenager who spent most of her life in foster care, and at 17 she's close to aging it out. >> she's a quick learner with a lot of interest, but she would do well with a family to help her figure out her future. >> barbara harrison introduces us. >> hi. how are you? >> this is dawn. she'll be our instructor. >> here at the studio of dance in gaithersburg, karen welcomed us and dawn, one of the instructors was ready to give her a lesson in hip-hop dance. >> the first thing we're going to do is just our feet. dance is one of the many arts she dreams of mastering one day. her social workers say she's great. >> she's a very talented young lady. she loves to dance.

a church in prince george's county is heartbroken after being hit by cold-blooded crooks. >> if you have heating oil, you know it can be massively expensive. it's going to be expensive to replace it now that there's no heat. now, this isn't the first time this has happened. the thieves stole more than 1,000 gallons of heating fuel from these two tanks behind st. michael's church. it appears to have happened the night before thanksgiving, and you can see the deep ruts the tires left. the truck they brought here to pump out the fuel and take it away. the thieves apparently made more than one trip.

they also stole oil from this tank behind the parish hall. >> i sure hope they needed it more than we did. to keep people warm and keep the kids warm. >> reporter: the pastor showed me three tanks that were drained almost empty. without oil there is no heat. it's so cold inside st. michael's church and the social hall that this past sunday afternoon, he had to decide to cancel the annual christmas pot luck dinner here to conserve what little oil they have for tuesday night's class for the children. >> church was very cold on sunday morning. i neetsed it right away it was rather in >> reporter: st. michael's church was built in 1958. it serves 300 parishioners. we found this committee today and asked them what the stolen heating fuel means to them. i guess it hits me even more so

because we're not the kind of parish that has all kinds of money to replace it. >> reporter: this is the second time heating oil has been stolen from st. michaels. police are investigating but so far have no leads. in brandy wine, maryland, chris gordon, news 4. bulk shopping took a big step in the district with opening of two brand new wal-mart stores. thousands of people have already checked out the new stores on georgia avenue in the northwest. the grand openings included a color guard and the cheetos guy. not everybody is welcoming the stores into the district. there's a big debate about low wages. >> low prices today means low wages every day. >> reporter: these stores going

up and down georgia avenue, they will be going away. >> the new stores are expected to employ 600 people together. both will stay open until midnight, seven days a week. we are about to go on a wild ride with our weather. >> we are. and the admission for this is free. a lot of people are saying the cold, the snow, are you ready for it? you have to be. that's what is coming this season. 55 degrees. the numbers at washington national. 52 towards bowie, annapolis at 49 degrees. very mild afternoon and it will stay that way through the night tonight. if you're along the mall, the temperatures look like this. around 53 degrees at 7:00. down to 50 by 11:00. so we are going to be very, very warm. the average high temperature is at 51. so we are going well above average today. we'll be there again tomorrow. no rain to talk about right now.

that may not be the case tomorrow, however. maybe a few isolated showers, but the real rain will wait. nice and warm across the region for ou day tomorrow. this is tomorrow into friday morning. and look what happens friday morning arod 5:30. we start to see showers moving in. this will be rain early on as the temperatures get very, very warm on thursday. a high temperature of 66 on thursday. and then it's rain on friday. friday will be a transition day. we'll start off around 60 degrees, and then temperatures will plummet during the amp into the low 40s by the end of the afternoon, and windchills will be in the 30s by friday. and with very heavy rainfall at times during the afternoon, friday afternoon is going to be very nasty. saturday a high of onl41. then on sunday, a temperature of 34 degrees, and this is a critical day. if you have plans on sunday, especially early on sunday, you'll want to start out with this forecast. then we move to all rain as temperatures warm to 34 on sunday and 52 on monday.
