pat collins spoke to relatives of the victim. pat? >> reporter: jim, sources tell news 4 police are taking steps to close this district bar for 9 96 hours until they can figure out what led to the stabbing this morning. it was supposed to be a big new year's day celebration. 8 -- $80 all you can drink. an argument led to a fight. the fight turned into a stabbing. one woman, three men wounded. the suspect, according to the police report, a woman, 20 to 25 years old, 5'2" to 5'4". wearing a pearl dress with a bloodstain on the breast section that did not afear to be from her. >> how many times was he stabbed?

four. >> where? >> in his side. >> reporter: four times in his side. >> if it wasn't for his size, then it could have been deadly. >> reporter: that's wayne jones. his nephew was stabbed inside the club. he said he's worried about security at places like this. >> they should have more strict rules. shouldn't anybody be able to come into the club with weapons of any time. police say after the fights started upstairs a man leaves the place, he starts walking up 18th street when he is stabbed in the back of the head by a guy who attacks him from behind. it's unclear as to what led to that. in the days to come, police said this new year celebration turned into a bloody crime spree. on behalf of the owner ship, our

hearts go go out to those injured in the criminal acts. the employees of the district have and will continue to do everything in their power to cooperate with the police in their investigation. and ultimately apprehend those responsible. the people who were injured are all expected to survive. live in northwest, pat collins, news 4. there are new concerns after an explosion and fire in an apartment building. fire officials worry there could be people unaccounted for inside the building in minneapolis, minnesota. the explosion that you're seeing happened about 8:15 this morning. firefighters arrived to flames shooting 20 feet in the air. some people jumped out windows to escape. 14 were injured. six critically. freezing temperatures caused water from the fire hoses to freeze on the building. crews want to search the inside, but it's not safe for them to go in. >> people forced out of their hopes by fire have been allowed

to return. the blaze broke out here on monroe street at east jefferson street shortly before noon today. investigators tell us it began in a laundry room. still no word on what sparked if flames. another fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to this townhouse. it's on north alfred street near patrick street. investigators think the flames began in the trash behind the house. the flames were intense enough to damage the outside of the home next door as well. fortunately no one was hurt. >> a tow truck driver who man over a man who said robbed him is facing charges tonight. cory stoddard is charged with second-degree murder. he said two men robbed him here yesterday. police tell us he chased them down, hitting one of them with his truck. 22-year-old kevin crouch died. the other man ran away. in just a couple of hours a

vigil is set to get under way to remember a teenager murdered during a party at a foreclosed home. 19-year-old rashad who you just saw was shot outside the house two weeks ago. hundreds of people attended that party. the vigil is scheduled at the great church of nazarin beginning at 7:00. police are still searching for the killer. a maryland mother is locked up accused of locking her 4-year-old daughter in the car for hours while she gambled. security officials at the casino found the little girl eight hours later. news 4's darcy spencer is live now with details. darcy? >> reporter: jim, we are talking about 4-year-old girl. sometimes they get nervous if you leave them in a room alon for a matter of minutes, let alone eight and a half hours. that's where this little girl was in that parking garage at the maryland live casino while her mom was inside the casino,

and today police had some very harsh words for that mom. >> shocking, appalling, disturbing. >> those words to describe this mom, accused of leaving her 4-year-old girl in the car while she gambled for hours at the maryland live casino. >> we don't do this to animals. we certainly shouldn't do this to children. >> reporter: it happened new year's eve. police say the little girl was in the car for eight and a half hours before she was found by security officers on the fourth floor of the parking garage. >> parental selfishness, absolute stupidity. just reckless. reckless abandonment. >> reporter: the little girl was cold and scared, but she was not physically harmed. her mother, 24-year-old alicia brown is in jail. she's facing second-degree child abuse, leaving a child unattended and neglect. >> you should almost turn around

police in falls church beginning this new year trying to track down two robbers. they hit the iconic state theater early this morning. david culver is live with more on the search. >> reporter: jim and erika, police are still trying to track down the two men who got into the state theater at 7:00 this morning and got away with a lot of cash. as of now police are still trying to track them down. this happened just hours after a new year's eve party.

the roar of fairfax county's police helicopter hovering over the iconic state theater on north washington street in falls church. police not taking any chances. some had their rifles drawn, waving cars away. other officers ready to pull their guns. but the suspects nowhere to be found. around 7:00 this morning the two men somehow got inside. one of them with a gun. they confronted an employee who was still up working after a concert. and then they got away with the money. >> i do not think of robberies. i think of good music and lots of fun. >> reporter: just across the street from the theater, claire and don's beach shack. rebecca owns the place. >> it's upsetting. >> i was shocked. i saw the news report this morning. didn't believe it. >> reporter: that's the voice of a performer who played here last night. he's with the popular '80s cover band the legwarmers. said the new year's eve bash was

a great time. >> everybody was having fun. >> reporter: the theater dates back to the 1930s. falls church's vice mayor says the robbery is personal. >> we're really proud to have the state theater here. it's a regional draw. we're going to make sure this isolated incident is over as quickly as possible. >> reporter: here's what police tell me as far as the latest on the investigation goes. i asked about surveillance video. they say as of now they don't have any surveillance video. there seems to be no cameras outside. not sure what's inside. timing seems suspicious. the concert wrapped up and just a few hours later the suspects hit, and it happened to be while an employee was inside the state theater. coming up, i've been speaking with several folks in the community, and they're worried about what seems to be a recent trend in crime. we're live in falls church,

james avery, the actor who played uncle phil has died. he was 68 years old and a veteran of the vietnam war. he played phillip banks, will smith's uncle on the nbc sitcom in the '90s. i'm deeply saddened to say that james avery has passed away. he was a second father to me. i will miss him greatly. the first baby of 2014 born in the district has a unique story to tell.

his twin has a different birthday and year. he came in three minutes after his sister who was born at 11:58 yesterday and last year. they were 28 days ahead of schedule. their mom was in medstar washington hospital center yesterday for a routine checkup. brandon's heart rate was low because the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. doctors ended up deciding it was time for a c-section. >> i'm really proud. god really blessed me with these children. it's really great. it's amazing. >> brandon is 5 pounds, 10 ounces. his barely older sister is 6 pounds, 5 ounces. >> and she will hold that over his head. >> you know, for life. >> i'm older than you. >> that's how it goes. for the first time, pot is being sold

a search tonight for the woman police say stabbed four people at a new year's eve party inside an adams morgan club. it happened at district nightclub on 18th street. three men and one woman was stabbed after a fight broke out. a maryland mother is in jail on charges of child neglect and abuse. police tell us 24-year-old alicia brown left her 4-year-old daughter locked in a gar while she gambled at maryland live casino yesterday security officers found the little girl after hearing her cries. she was not seriously hurt.

mary's county sheriff deputy was injureded after his cruiser hit a deer. sergeant robert russell was on oakley road avenue in maryland. the cruiser hit the deer in the program, overturned, landed upside down in a water filled ditch. the trooper was trapped. police are looking for more possible victims of two women accused of a so-called flimflam scam. police arrested consuelo green and graham in the park. they offered money to coax women into giving them their bank account information. when the victims receive the bag, they find out the money is fake. police say this scheme is spreading in our area. all the way up to new york. the secret service is in here. immigrants living in the state illegally will be able to get a driver's license or i.d.

card. the state motor vehicle association is scheduling appointments as early as tomorrow. undocumented immigrants will need to prove they have filed state income tax returns for two years. the state hopes the new law will make the roads safer by making sure there are more qualified drivers behind the wheel. drivers who use the dulles toll road are digging deeper into their pockets. that's because they brought with it a 75% toll hike. the toll runs between the belt way and dulles airport. the rate increase will pay for the construction of metro's new silver line to dulles. in prince george's county you have to do yard work without a plastic bag residents are not allowed to use the plastic bags. paper bags or reusable containers must be used instead. it also costs more for the

county to throw them out. starting today, you have to pay to see the beauty inside the national cathedral. the new admission fee is $10. $6 for kids and seniors. the money is going to pay for repairs from the 2011 earthquake. the fee is just for sight seers. worshipers will still be allowed inside the cathedral for free. there's also no admission charged on sundays. and just hours before the affordable care act was set to take effect, supreme court justice sonia sotomayor blocked part of it. the requirement that some religion affiliated organizations provide health insurance, that includes birth control, she acted on a request from a small group of catholic nuns in denver. in the meantime, a white house official had this response. we defer to the deeptd of justice on litigation matters but remain confident that our

online. before it was taken down the person who posted it accused snap chat of snishlly ignoring security flaws in its software. colorado has been selling legal marijuana for almost ten hours now, and it seems that business is booming. >> hundreds of people are braving the frigid temperatures and snow to get their hands on the newly legal drug. colorado is the only state in the country that allows people to purchase and smoke marijuana legally. could the district follow colorado's lead and legalize marijuana possession? >> we look at the growing effort to change marijuana laws in the nation's capital. >> reporter: back in 1998, 70% of district voters approved medical marijuana for use in the city. it took more than a dozen years for dispensaries to be licensed and up and running under tight regulations that still limit their appeal. now david grosso has legislation

that would simply legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana here. similar to colorado. and he's watching that state very closely. >> it is a big day for colorado and actually for the whole country. i think this will be a good test, and we'll see how it goes and see how well they handle it. in the long run that will help us here. imposing small fines rather than outright legalization. >> folks in d.c. will come around to it the same time as the rest of the country. we'll start with decriminalization. once we realize that is going smoothly we'll move to legalization. >> reporter: colorado was supported by by the advocation of legal marijuana use. >> marijuana user who is are finally able to purchase marijuana legally in a regulationed fashion from a licensed, tax paying business, voters in colorado are pretty happy with the system. and we expect to be able to export that success elsewhere.

pay money for a gym membership they joined nearly six years ago and recently called to cancel. >> a gentleman said here's your confirmation number for your cancellation. and you're free to use the gym for the next 60 days because we're going to charge you membership for the next 60 days. it surprised me. >> reporter: when he first signed up he thought he agreed to a 30-day cancellation fee. but the fine print added another 30 days. a second gotcha, the monthly charges doubled in five years. when they signed up, his wife was paying $32.99 a month, and he was paying $29.99 a month. >> by the time i canceled in november of 2012, at that point i had been paying now on a biweekly basis, because the company slipped that in. >> reporter: small familiar charges now twice a month.

the party would be against the law. >> i can't imagine the county being that irresponsible to just at the last second say we can't have our event. >> reporter: officials say the van violated county legislation cb 18 when it sold tickets for the event online and opened it to the public. another go-go band's new year's eve party was also shut down for the same reason. cb 18 was drafted to hold entertainment venues to a higher standard. this is an entertainment venue that had a number of shootings and was considered a nuisance in the county. now it's closed. they received a number of violations and eventually they lost their state liquor license. >> because of these tools that we put in place, crime has gone down by 40% over three years. >> reporter: county council member karen tolls drafted the legislation and says it's not out to target one particular kind of entertainment, but to
