right now at 4:00, it's not just the snow. brisk winds are making bone chilling temperatures feel colder. >> it's really cold. it's really freezing. i hate it. i wish it was gone already. >> thousands of flights canceled, stranding people across the country. >> i have a worried mom at home that is freaking out that i'm not home. i'm trying to get home. >> roads are hit or miss. the occasional entrepreneur. >> would you like your snow shovelled? good afternoon. i'm wendy rieger in for pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here it is, folks. it is bitter cold out there. we are dealing with the stuff right now.

we have single digit temperatures with windchills near zero. truly dangerous stuff. biting wind and blowing snow. >> but, things are starting to get back to normal at the airports. reagan, dulles and bwi are open. checking the rails, most trains are running full service. the brunswick line to the northeast is on a reduced schedule. on the roads, most primary roads are clear. crews are working on the secondary streets. watch out, we could have a big refreeze overnight. not too many of you are in the dark right now. power companies are reporting 1700 customers without electricity right now. >> we have winter storm team 4 coverage right now. we begin with veronica johnson on cue. this is just where we said it would be yesterday. >> that's right. folks, this really is

hypothermia weather, frostbite type of weather. i felt for the folks i passed today who had to work outside for any prolonged period of time. there's the shot, what you don't see is the wind. we look around to the clear sky. the wind really whipping. the winds were up to 47 miles per hour. the temperatures have been low today, the highs in the 20s with winds gusting around 20 miles per hour. you can see, it's still delivering windchills in the single digits around frederick, maryla maryla maryland, montgomery county, fairfax and stafford county. not good at all. the low temperatures not doing anything to helt the snow. here, one to four. to the north, five to ten, as much as a foot of snow. it's the snow that is going to be on the ground for some time. the temperatures tomorrow morning dropping to 14 degrees. that 14, inside the beltway.

wait till you see how cold and low the numbers go outside of the beltway. i'll have the forecast coming up. we head to adam tuss with more on how this is impacting travel. >> reporter: things are starting to even out here at reagan national as far as flights are concerned. airports getting back on their feet. with the way the weather, the temperatures, the cold, certainly nothing back to normal. you should not expect that you are going to zip through. the scene in and around boston, bitterly cold. sometimes the snow blowing sideways. in new york's central park, the dogs enjoying it. the pretty pictures made a mess of travel up and down the east coast. trips to boston canceled, others delayed. modified service along the northeast corridor. that means those who do make it

affected by it. the tree blocked the road and knocked out power as well. mass avenue reopened as crews cleared away a fallen tree there. that problem was at waterside drive. inbound traffic was shut down. >> northern virginia, heavy snow and high winds combined to bring down trees and power lines. emergency workers and power crews were called to the scene. you can see right here in sterling, after this tree fell on power lines. those trees contributed to thousands of power outages earlier. scott macfarlane with that part of the story from the live desk. >> more than 7,000 customers in the dark. there is good news tonight. we checked and pepco reporting

slick and icy conditions on the highways this morning, causing a number of cars to spin out. this traffic camera over the hov lanes in virginia captured several cars that slid off the high way.

state police were working when these drivers lost control. no major injuries reported. as the sun goes down, expect more icy spots. >> it's deceptive, you can't tell if it's icy or not. it doesn't take much to send your car into a skid. richard jordan continues the coverage. he's getting tips from the pros on how to handle trouble on the icy roads. >> reporter: no doubt you have seen plenty of the snow and ice covering the area, no matter where you go. this is the training track where officers get firsthand experience of what to do if they encounter a tough experience. look at the stunts we were able to pull off. it can happen to just about anyone, losing control behind the wheel. what do you do if you are caught in that situation? we have tips from the experts. we are going to debunk the myths you may have heard. ha

veronica, what it's like outside now? >> mighty cold. everything is frozen and it's windy out there. there's a shot as we get closer and closer to sunset with the frozen ground. itis going to feel better, a little melting around the corner for tomorrow. it's going to feel and we'll feel better on sunday with temperatures going way up, again. eight degrees right now, the windchill. 13 in rockville. 15 in college park. 11 in d.c. 22 degrees honeytown. that's the warm spot. 13 down toward warrenton. 8 coming in at dulles, one of the low spots. let's look at the forecast for this evening. 7:00, 9:00 and 11 p.m. temperatures. the winds will ease up. 20 degrees by 7:00. actual air temperature. 18 by 9:00. 17 degrees by 11:00 p.m. the windchill reading, not quite as harsh as, well, it felt this

morning. one thing is for sure. even despite the fact that the winds are easing up, the temperatures will continue to drop. we'll have icy roads for tomorrow morning. the temperature range by morning, from two to 14 degrees across the area. winds will be out of the south at five to ten miles per hour. the southerly wind will help give us a little bit of a warm up for the second half of the weekend. when i return, we'll take a look at the weekend forecast and the next cold wave that comes in next week. >> thanks. some people in northern virginia are in the cold and dark this afternoon. we caught up with power crews after a tree fell on the neighborhood. it took three utility poles with it. the lights going out at 3:00 a.m. 255 customers have been affected. crews are making progress to get everyone's lights on and your heat. before the handful that are spending the day in the cold, they are dealing with it the best they can. >> downstairs is getting nippy.

basement is about 45. main floor is about 50-55. upstairs still 60 to 65. >> we checked with dominion power this afternoon and it tells us at the height of the storm, 12,000 customers without power in northern virginia. right now, less than 50 customers waiting. right now at the airports, people heading to the northeast are dealing with delays and cancellations. r reag reagan, dulles and bwi, passengers are still feeling it. if you are headed out, check with the airline before you go. the maryland transportation authority lifting its travel restrictions for traffic crossing the bay bridge. the winds there have calmed to about 30 to 39 miles an hour. vehicles that had been restricted from crossing including empty tractor trailers, house trailers,

motorcycles and vehicles with cargo on their roof racks are allowed to cross the bridge. there are no delays in traffic going in either direction. the fierce winds and the frigid temperatures are coming down on people, pedestrians walking on the national mall where it is wide open. storm team 4 meteorologist, amelia segal was out in the bitter cold all morning. >> reporter: as the sun came up over capitol hill, it was early quiet. the overnight snow and gusting winds on top of frigid temperatures kept many people indoors. >> i had to put my old military coat on here. i haven't worn it since germany. that gust, did you see that? >> reporter: yeah. >> it was crazy. >> reporter: with the windchill around five degrees, they are bracing the cold long enough to take snapshots of the monument. >> we are hoping to check out the smithsonian and spend most of our time inside.

>> reporter: gloves, hats and starves. many schools are closed or still on winter break and many offices have liberal leave. jason and his son were one of the few people on the mall. >> we drove my wife into work. my work is closed until 11:00. we thought we would take the chance to play in the snow. >> reporter: the good news as we head into tonight, the winds die down. the temperatures remain frigid. we are a little bit warmer tomorrow. highs will only warm to around freezing. reporting at the national mall, amelia segal, news 4. check out what drivers had to face in ohio this morning. even the pros had to slow down for this one. the wind with the snow creating white out conditions. this is cleveland. in massachusetts, the plows are having a tough time keeping up with mother nature along with the constant snowfall, strong winlds are blowing the snow back on the roads.

to be making cheerios without genetically modified ingredients. the gmo free version will be hitting stores soon. this is after consumers voiced concerns about the engineered ingredients. a spokesperson says they are able to make this change because the main ingredient in the original flavored cheerios is oats. for the apple cinnamon cheerios or multigrain, no, they can't change it. those flavors are harder to make gmo free because they contain ingredients like corn. right now, everyone has to wait in line for the post office. that's keeping a lot of people away. the u.s. postal service is trying to cut the time you have to wait in line. they are going mobile using point of sale technology, allowing employees to scan packages, scan and sell other products. 50 locations tested the technology over the holidays. the postal service is struggling

quite a bit. they ended fiscal year 2013 with a net loss of $5 billion. so, if a bill due date falls on a weekend, when do you have to make the payment? what are the dos and don'ts of space heater safety and we have a question about a costco e-mail scam going around. it's friday. let's turn to liz. first up, we are going to patricia in bethesda, maryland. if the due day for a credit card falls on a weekend, when is the bill due? >> we turn to the federal reserve for the answer. there are standards in place that require credit card companies to give you an extra day. that means when a payment is due on a weekend or holiday, you will have until the following business day to pay. for instance, if the due date is the 15th, the payment is considered on time. if it's received by monday the 16th and the payment cut-off time can't be earlier than 5:00 p.m. so you have until 5:00 p.m. that

monday to pay. here is a timely question as the temperature drops out there, many viewers are using space heaters to heat their homes. what are the dos and don'ts for space heater safety. >> we checked with consumer product and safety commission. only use a heater tested and make sure it's certified by a known testing laboratory. older heaters may not meet the standards and could spark a home fire. they say put heaters on a hard, nonflammable surface. turn them off before grow to sleep and keep children and pets away from space heaters. make sure you have working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. rudy says he received an e-mail claiming to be from costco about a failed delivery. how do you know, liz, when the e-mails are actually from the company and how do you know when

snow isn't the only problem left by this winter storm up north. scott macfarlane at the live desk. >> we are looking at serious flooding happening south of boston. take a look at the houses, buildings in the coastal town. it is submerged in icy water.

the fire officials announced no serious structural damage. the windchills in massachusetts so cold that advisories in place across several counties through tomorrow morning. good news, the flights are now arriving and departing from boston's logan airport which suspended flights. there have been dozens of cancellations today and tonight. >> the wind is partly behind this, right? >> right. they had the fierce wind off the water to land. it's still, of course, very windy up there now. pushing in a lot of the water. meanwhile, to the north in maine, windchills of minus 49 degrees. for us, again, icy conditions tonight. a look outside, the snow is still on the ground. i don't think we are going to see a lot of melting taking place until sunday. then the ground is going to get spongy around here. then, we are going to see the refreeze again on monday.

it's going to get hard. we have folks, a pretty tough couple days to get through. take a look at storm team 4 radar where scanning the area, of course, we don't have anything to report right now. the next drops and a little bit of maybe freezing rain and snow will be showing up on that radar on sunday. so, if you want to stay up to date and you are away from your tv, get the radar on your phone, interactive radar. go to google play or itunes and download the storm team 4 weather app. temperatures across the area, we are in the teens and 20s. 19 in frederick, maryland. hagerstown, 23 degrees right in d.c. 26 degrees currently in fredericksburg. again, below freezing everywhere. tomorrow, there will be a few locations that get above freezing like d.c., manassas, leesburg, culpeper, for sure and fredericksburg to pax river. tomorrow, a southerly wind. it's a milder, more milder wind coming into the area.

culpeper, la ray, charlottesville, 37 degrees. sunshine across the area. so, you would think we would see some melting going on. not as low as the temperatures will be. 42 degrees on sunday. a 60% chance of wet weather. i think right now in the morning we have a chance of seeing freezing rain before switching over to all rain. temperatures 38 to 43 degrees. for monday, a 30% chance of snow early. so, for a couple hours, around 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 a.m., a little bit of snow. temperature 29 degrees, then it's falling temperatures throughout the day on monday. again, from about 30 to the low 20s by afternoon, with windchills on monday that will be in the teens. now, take a look at tuesday. the current air mass that we are feeling right now, our coldest air since 2009. on tuesday, we could see record cold air here, folks. 19 degrees, the high temperature. that is it. we start out at seven degrees

figure out why a pile of road salt fell on a worker at a salt yard. he was moving rock salt with a front end loader yesterday. a 100 foot tall pile of it toppled over, trapping him inside. emergency crews rushed to the scene using shovels to find the victim. when they reached him, he was already dead. the fire investigators in massachusetts are looking for the cause of a major fire overnight. frigid temperatures, wind along with smoke made fighting the blaze difficult. it was a multiuse building, shops on the main floor and apartments above. red cross is helping the families looking for a place to stay. the celebrations for the antarctica rescue may have been early. they are stalled. the chinese crew that helped in the rescue is now stuck in the

ice. the chinese ice breaker provided the helicopter that ferried the passengers to an australian ice breaker. the australian ship is standing by in open water now, in case the chinese crew needs help. former israeli prime minister continues to decline at this hour. he suffered a massive stroke eight years ago and has been in a coma ever since. doctors say his kidney's and other major organs are beginning to fail. the retired general, however, is a fighter. he is one of israel's most iconic and controversial figures. a prominent voice for decades. he was elected prime minister in 2001 and still in office when he fell by stroke in 2006. he's now 85 years old. russian president, vladimir putin personally tested out the slopes at a ski venue that will host the winter olympic games in sochi next month.

he toured over sites. the visit comes two weeks when two suicide bombers killed people 400 miles away. he says it will be safe and secure. the opening ceremony is set for february 7th. a warning about using dietary supplements to fix brain concussions. some supplement companies claim their pills can speed up the recovery or prevent them. the food and drug administration is saying despite claims to the contrary, no supplement has been proven to do that. they fear if athletes take the pills for that reason, they could return to play sooner than they should. it looks like parents aren't the only one who is have trouble talking about sex, their doctors may struggle as well. one-third of teenagers did not discuss sex during their annual check ups. among the teens that did talk about it, the conversation was
