all the roads are pretty much frozen over right now. >> it's extremely cold. >> right now, cold weather keeping streets icy and crunchy and potentially dangerous. that as many others sit in the cold waiting for their power to be turned back on. >> temperatures try to rebound. but wait until you see the big dip coming in the days ahead. welcome to news 4 today on this first weekend of 2014. i'm richard jordan. >> and happy new year to you. i haven't seen you since 2013. >> too long. >> yeah, i'm angie goff. this morning, tens of millions of people are still digging out from the massive winter storm. the snow and ice and cold are to blame for 16 deaths. >> the fridged cold is causing big problems. wind chills around new england are around 20 below zero. you know it's bad when minnesota

shuts down for a winter storm. they cancelled classes for all public school students. that's the first time that happened in 20 years. >> and around here yesterday we were dealing with unbarable temperatures and the wind was just brew dahl, chuck. >> yeah. it was windy and cold yesterday. good morning angie and richard and good morning everybody. welcome to the first weekend of 2014 which will be a cold one for sure but you ain't seen nothing yet. very cold weather coming our way into the early and middle parts of next week. outside this morning, this is no bargain at all. single digits and teens this morning. 7 in gaithersburg. 17 downtown washington. temperatures right now are 5 to 15 degrees colder than they were at the same time yesterday. so your saturday planner, off to a very cold start. temperatures in the teens through about 8 or 9:00 this morning. rising only up into the low 30s today. plenty of sunshine for your saturday. so that's the good news. but unfortunately, clouds are back tonight. might have some freezing drizzle

to worry about tomorrow and the arctic air is coming. now, back to the news. this morning you'll notice many sidewalks and side streets still covered with snow and ice. she shows us the mess left behind and the clean up underway. >> i'm freezing. i don't like it at all. >> reporter: her arlington neighborhood is an icy obstacle course. >> yeah, all the roads are pretty much frozen over right now. we just drove here and we were skidding a couple of times. >> reporter: cars slow down on ice that covers parts of north garfield street near washington boulevard and people walk carefully on slippery sidewalks. snow and water have frozen once again making untreated roads potentially dangerous. the end of a chilly day. >> it's extremely cold. >> reporter: heavy wind knocked this tree down earlier in northeast d.c. near central avenue pulling down power lines leaving some people like andrew and his son in the dark. >> just grateful that nobody got

hurt. i've been here about 40 years. i have seen the street completely covered with snow but nothing like this. >> reporter: pepco crews continue to work. it's not easy replacing downed wires in the blistering cold. it's tough for firefighters. a fire broke out in this nail salon. >> we have the potential for ice to form to create slipping hazards. >> reporter: back in arlington, she is disappointed the freezing temperatures are sticking around this weekend. >> what are you going to do? >> i think we're just going to lay low this weekend. >> news 4. amtrak is trying to get rail service back up and running this morning. taking a live look right now at union station. you can see that flag there whipping around in the wind. meanwhile, amtrak saying nearly all of it's trains out of d.c., new york, and boston should be running today. still, they say you should leave extra time and expect some delays along the way. well, almost everyone feeling

the brunt of the storm is to the north of our area. for some that snow and the cold are no longer the big concerns. sarah shows us some of the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: the forecast warned and the weather delivered. a winter storm that still has the east coast reeling. expressways closed, flights cancelled, thousands stranded and hots on stand by to treat those exposed to the fridged air. >> it is freezing. >> reporter: in massachusetts, snow fell along with temperature that reached as low as 20 below. coastal flooding in the state sent chunks of ice into front yards. >> beautiful place in july but this time of the year it's tough. >> reporter: more icy floods in atlantic city and new york city saw a frozen times square. tourists and locals hurry to get out of the cold. the storm reached as far south as georgia with snow flurries in atlanta and single digit temperatures predicted in the coming days. when the final flakes fell, 22

states an an estimated 91 million people have been effected. the first storm of 2014, a bone chilling start to the new year. nbc news. with temperatures forecasted to fall dramatically in the days ahead there's some things you can do to keep your pipes from freezing. open up cabinets so heat can reach the enclosed pipes. repair broken windows, doors, and walls. turn off the water to outside faucets. remove any hoses and drain the pipes there. if a pipe in your home freezes, the agency recommends opening the cold water faucet nearest the frozen one. it should relieve the pressure and reduce the chance of a break. always call on a plumber when in doubt. >> stay with news 4 and nbc washington.com for continuing coverage and forecast updates and issues that may impact your neighborhood. >> a man faces charges after he left his grand son in a cold car. he left his 6-year-old grand son

alone in the parking lot of a mall thursday night. a customer passing by spotted the boy in the van. rescuers took the boy to the hospital as a precaution. he wasn't hurt. police arrested diaz when he returned to his van three hours later. the boy is now with his mom. on tuesday, a mom was arrested after police say she left her 4-year-old daughter in a car for eight hours. d.c. police arrested a man in connection to the death of a washington teen in april. according to officers 17-year-old darius cannon was shot and killed by 39-year-old deon redwood in southeast. just yesterday officers caught up with redwood and charged him with first-degree murder. friends and family of darius have been praying for this arrest. new this morning, a fire near one of the most famous landmarks in new york city. and the vacation is almost over for the obamas. just how soon the first family

this morning, we are remembering a music legend. 50s and 60s rock and roll icon phil everly died yesterday. he was 74 years old. he was best known for the music he wrote and performed with his brother don. he was fighting a chronic pulmonary issue for years. his career included 19 top 40

hits including wake up little susie and bye bye love. >> hollywood is morning the loss of two actresses. alicia rhett died at 98 years old. she was in gone with the wind. an 83-year-old actress barbara lawrence also died. he was in the musical oklahoma. lawrence has a star on the hollywood walk of fame. happening today, president obama and the first family will leave hawaii tonight and arrive back in washington tomorrow. the president and the first lady spent their last night in hawaii out to dinner with friends. the president spent most of his vacation playing golf and staying at a rented home. while on vacation he signed a defense bill and budget deal easing spending cuts. >> mcauliffe will spend today giving back. today is a common wealth day of service. it comes one week before he takes the oath of office. he organized the volunteer

this morning, investigators are trying to determine what caused a transformer fire underneath radio city music hall in new york. take a look, you can see heavy black smoke billowing out on to the street there. firefighters did put out the fire. crews evacuated the building. no shows were scheduled there last night. this morning, the journey continues for 52 passengers once stranded on a ship in ice in antarctica. the ship taking them back to australia had to stop yesterday because another ship got stuck in ice too. they have been given the green light to keep going. they were aboard a russian research ship when it got stuck in ice. no one was hurt. with the winter months comes flu season and the bug is widespread in virginia right now. the common wealth is showing

some of the highest numbers in the country. dr. nancy snyderman has more on what the cdc is saying about this outbreak. >> when 6-year-old twins get sick it's double trouble for dad jacob. >> whenever one gets sick, the other one will definitely get sick. it's one or two days later. >> reporter: worried about flu outbreaks he took his kids for the flu vaccine. hospitals in the area already have a dozen adults and children on life support because of the illness. >> we're seeing a lot of people who were previously healthy in the 30s, 40s and 50s getting very sick with flu. usually with the h 1 n 1 type. >> they reported widespread activity in 10 states. numbers released show that as more than doubled to 25 states. texas has been one of the hardest hit. sandra rollins who got her flu

shot at this walgreens has been sick before and says she never wants to go through that again. >> it was miserable. several months with flu and then pneumonia and it's just -- it puts you out for several months. >> reporter: doctors say it's not too late to get the vaccine and everyone over the age of six months should. especially the elderly, pregnancies nanlt women, those with weakened immune systems and caregivers. his five month old son didn't escape the flu outbreak. he got sick new year's eve and he has been in texas children's hospital ever since. >> it's tough. especially for a first time parent like me to see a child this way and to know that i can go through it and fight but you can't fight for them. >> so how do you know it's the flu and not another bug? symptoms including fever, chills, cough, runny nose, body aches and fatigue. >> and that was dr. nancy

snyderman reporting. the flu virus is most easily spread by talking, sneezing, or talking. the virginia health department says there's a few things you can do to decrease your chances of getting the flu this year. washing your hands help and then be careful touching things and touching your mouth, eyes, or nose. >> this time of year everyone has something. >> knock on wood our family hasn't gotten anything yet. >> one of the best ways to keep it from spreading around the family. what's the number one thing everyone touches? the remote. >> that's the dirtiest thing when you go to the hotel. always bring the lysol. >> good to know. >> or don't watch tv. >> put it on channel 4 and put the remote away until springtime. that's the best thing you can do everybody. welcome to your weekend. a very cold first weekend of the new year and there's more cold coming, everybody. next week may be some of the coldest weather we have literally seen in almost 20 years. washington national airport has not been below zero since 1994.

that's 20 years ago and i don't know that we're going to get below zero on tuesday, wednesday morning. but we may be well down into the single digits in town. and that means many may be dropping below zero early next week. that's brutal stuff. this morning, this ain't no bargain, everybody. 17 degrees outside. winds out of the southwest at 5 miles per hour. most of the suburbs once you get outside of the belt way and into the heat island of the city, it's in the single digits this morning. 5 in martinsburg. 9 degrees manassas and even in the single digits and low teens out on the eastern shore. high temperatures today. plenty of sunshine and a nice warm up but even a nice warm up will barely get us above the freezing mark from washington southbound. not much of a rain or snow threat on the radar this morning. not that much upstream from us

today the maryland's men basketball team plays georgia tech in college park. you can bet one of their rising stars will be on the court. >> he is truly fulfilling his dreams of playing hoops despite so many people telling him to give it up. news 4 has more. >> reporter: it's varun poster day. >> i want to help anyway i can. >> reporter: it's his second season in the program. one the maryland native only dared to dream he could be a

part of. all his life he was told to give up this sport. >> coming from my background, we all focus on the academics. so i was only thinking about him going to get a nice degree and then pursue whatever you want to do. but varun has got something inside him. >> it's that something that convinced his parents he could continue as long as he kept his grades up. after a year at a division 3 school, he transferred to maryland and walked on to the terps. this past off season he was offered a scholarship. oh, and, yes, his grades are pretty good. currently holding a 3.99 gpa. the number that worries his mother the most, 5'9". that is his 5 foot 9 inch height. he's the shortest guy not just on the team button court every game. somehow it doesn't seem to concern his 5'10" coach at all.

millions are still digging out from a winter storm this morning. first the snow. we saw at least two inches while parts of new england saw two feet. that region is in the icebox this morning dealing with wind chills below -- around 20 below

zero. at least 16 people have died. minnesota governor mark dayton is closing all public schools in that state monday because of the fridged temperatures. >> amtrak is working to restore rail service this morning. if you're headed out of union station, a live look for you right now. amtrak says nearly all of the express and northwest regional trains should be running today. however minor delays are always possible. >> check this out, the cold made driving in minneapolis go from bad to worse. drivers could not get in the hov lanes because the gates were literally frozen shut it took several hours for crews to get them working and traffic moving again on those roads. cold weather around here sticking around for awhile. we have a big temperature drop in the days ahead. >> we do but first the weekend weather. we want a check on the forecast with storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. i bet you are missing the florida sunshine. >> yes. it was 81 degrees on my vacation on thursday. we landed last night. it was already back down into

the low 20s. so a bitter cold reality check for me and for many coming back. every flight was full yesterday. that's for sure. this is the way it looks outside this morning from national harbor. a clear sky overhead and, man, is it cold outside? 17 at national airport. 9 degrees in brandy wine maryland this morning. six down in huntington and prince frederick. and 7 in gaithersburg and german town. single digits and teens first thing this morning. cold sunshine. temperatures will recover a bit. we should be mid 20s by later this morning and low to mid 30s later on this afternoon. clouds will come back tonight mainly into icy chances for tomorrow before the real arctic air arrives. all of that in your seven day coming up. >> chuck, thanks. right now the fbi is getting involved in the search for a man that robbed a bank in alexand a alexandria. he walked into the bank near north jordan street. this was yesterday afternoon. they say he walked up to the

tell lett teller. the fbi is offering a $5,000 reward for an arrest leading to the case. if you recognize the man in the picture call the fbi. >> this morning, police are looking for the three young men that stabbed a 12-year-old boy. fairfax county police say the guys walked up to the boy thursday night. this was at the seven corners shopping center in falls church. the 12-year-old was stabbed and the attackers took off. no words were exchanged and police still don't know why the men did it. the kmucommunity is concerned a you can imagine. >> it's sad for a 12-year-old boy to have to go through that. >> it's terrible why somebody would do something violent toward the child. an innocent child. it makes no sense and what you could get out of that. it's awful. >> the victim apparently didn't know the attackers. he is recovering from nonlife threatening injuries. a legal victory for a california family fighting for a 13-year-old girl in the hospital after complications from tonsil

surgery. a judge moved the family of jahi mcmath can move her from the hospital. they suffered a heart attack during tonsil surgery a month ago. they want to take her to new york to explore treatment options to revival her brain activity but the hospital thinks this is a fruitless effort. >> this is a victory in terms of getting us one step closer to move. >> it's horrible that this child has died. it's also horrible that it's so difficult for her family to accept that death. >> the next step is to find a doctor willing to insert her breathing and feeding tube which is is required by all long-term care facilities. the judge ruled that the hospital did not have to perm form those procedures. another case with similar details is unfolding in texas as the hospital is fighting for the life of a pregnant woman. he found his pregnant wife unusual back in november. she was taken to the hospital and declared brain dead.

he wanted to take his wife off life support which he said is what she wanted but the state of texas won't allow any hospital to remove a pregnant woman from life support. he is working with a legal team now. health care will become a hot button issue in maryland. when the general assembly returns next week, lawmakers will take up an emergency bill that could fix problems with the state's health care exchange website. the state could give people more time to enroll in health care plans without being penalized. maryland's site has been dealing with problems since it's launch in october. the governor says many of its biggest problems have been fixed. in the meantime, the fight to legalize marijuana in maryland now has a new voice. according to the washington post, the senate president says he would support legislation supporting regulated marijuana sales similar to what we're seeing happen in colorado. the democrat says he does not expect such a bill to pass in the coming 90 day legislation

session. the general assembly gets back to work wednesday at noon. >> the general assembly also returns on wednesday and one lawmaker wants to close a loophole in the sex offender registry he is proposing a bill inspired by a man that told his story right here last summer. news 4 jackie benson has more. >> the sight of the former t-ball coach trying to elude a news 4 camera after his conviction for an act of child molestation decades ago encouraged his victim to speak publicly for the first time. rob that asked that we not use his last name to protect his family's privacy first contacted police in 2007 but it took five years for prosecutors to learn he had an earlier molestation conviction that didn't show up on statewide records. the crime occurred before the sex offender registry was created in 1994. >> it was public record then and it's supposed to be public

record now. i don't understand why we can't protect our kids from people we know about. >> he plans to introduce a bill that's come to be known as robbie's rule for rob's childhood nickname. it would make information about older convictions available to police. >> we are now in the digital age and we're not going back and researching every record and adding it. all we're doing in this bill is to make it available for law enforcement offersers. >> rob has begun a facebook campaign. >> he didn't anything. i ended it. i ended him doing what he did and now it's on to the next thing. it's to get this bill passed. >> an advocate for returning sex offenders says he she considers the bill to be unfair because it involves retroactive punishment. the delegate plans to introduce the bill next week. it is one of the most popular past times in our area. but now, the rules are changing for happy hour. we're going to tell you when and

driving on snow covered and icy roads can be dangerous. there's a few things you can do to avoid getting into trouble. i learned the single most important thing about preventing icy accidents. >> reporter: this demonstration looks like it may have gotten out of control, but an expert was always right there to keep us on course. he teaches montgomery county police officers defensive driving techniques. the untreated test track to show how ice and speed lead to slipping and sliding. nowadays most cars have power

steering and traction control. look what a big difference it makes. >> you feel the jerking. >> but i'm still on the control. i'm going to show you the exact same thing. the exact same thing with my traction control off. i have no control. >> reporter: he knows too well what can happen when dangerous drivers are on the roads. >> i had my first share of going through people's homes and telling them that their loved one wasn't coming home. >> but there's basic ways to reduce the risk. the most important, watch your speed. if you go slow, you can recover fast. but if you do find yourself spinning out, pumping the brakes isn't always the best move. most vehicles have antilock brakes. instead, keep your feet off the pedals and your hands on the wheel. you should turn toward the direction you eventually want to stop. >> right now i'm not pressing the gas. >> we're assuming that's where you want to go.

because you want to aim to the road. >> the ultimate advice is to know your car. a lot of car makers anticipate the problems and equip the vehicle for you to keep you on course in any weather. >> here's another tip for you. so he says if you have a teen driver that's just starting to drive, now would be a perfect time to go to one of these frozen parking lots and get the experience so you don't get nervous and panic when it happens to you in the real situation. >> don't go out there for the fun of doing donuts, right? >> it is kind of fun. >> i never knew about taking your feet off the pedals because your first instinct is to pump the brakes. great advice there. thank you. >> you're welcome. >> we have another chance of snow in the coming days. we'll check in with chuck. >> that's right. the cold air is in place. it will stick around through the day today. there's a little moisture coming our way for tomorrow. i'm a little concerned about potential iciness on your sunday morning and there's a chance we could see record cold in the coming days. all of that coming up next.

breaking news in prince george's county. police are on the scene of a deadly crash on indian head highway and palmer road.

getting healthy. well, lauren has some tips for sticking to the gym in 2014. >> reporter: is it on your list this year? the workout routine that you know you should have but just don't? you're not alone. >> come about january 1st we start seeing that increase throughout the gyms and throughout our studios. >> reporter: he is the head coach at orange theory south tampa. we asked for his advice on how to keep the workout resolution. it starts with structure, commitment and a buddy. a partner that can make you head to the gym even when you would rather not. it takes about a month to put your body into a habit. as you're working out it can get frustrating if you're not seeing the results that you want. one way to deal with that is to have a big goal but also smaller ones along the way so you can see progress. how do you measure that progress? be wary of the scale which can be discouraging if you're gaining muscle and can't tell you about the body fat

really plummet during the overnight hours right next to the waters of the potomac. meanwhile, it's single digits from german town northbound through gaithersburg. on out toward leesburg and ashburn, single digits to around 10. mostly single digits along i-81. there are also some low teens down toward fredericksburg and down toward st. mary's county but that doesn't make it any more comfortable outside. the 24 hour temperature change we're on average 5 to 15 degrees colder now than we were yesterday morning. but with all the sunshine we'll see later on this afternoon, temperatures will respond fairly nicely. i think we can make mid 30s around town. but if you have more than an inch or two of snow on the ground, northern montgomery county out toward frederick county you may hold at or below the freezing mark f
