right now at 6:00 an ice storm warning in effect for parts of our area, freezing rain sticking around and creating slick spots on area roads. meanwhile the deep freeze headed our way is already wreaking havoc on a huge part of the country. historically low temperatures and wind chills well below zero. plus an apartment fire in arlington forces some to jump from their second story windows while firefighters pull others to safety. good evening everyone i'm erica gonzalez. rain, freezing rain and potential for icy roads creating problems north and west of the d.c. metro area. this has led to an ice storm warning for parts of our area including loudoun county in virginia and frederick county, maryland. storm team four meteorologist amelia segal is joining us tonight.

how long is this warning supposed to last? >> the ice storm warning will go until 9:00 p.m. this includes leesburg, frederick, westminster and hagerstown. in addition to that a freezing rain advisory still in effect for areas in pink including montgomery and northern fauquier counties. this freezing rain advisory expires at 7:00 p.m. for northern frerk and montgomery county. further counties to the north the freezing rain advisory will expire at 9:00. then a wind chill watch goes into effect 6:00 p.m. through noon tuesday for wind chills as low as 20 to 30 degrees below zero. on storm team 4 radar i'm continuing to track scattered rain with pockets of freezing rain. again this freezing rain lasts until about 9:00 p.m. tonight. more rain headed our way tomorrow. i'll be timing out the rain and

the big temperature drop in about 15 minutes, erica. >> road crews were out early this morning in d.c., maryland and virginia prepping streets for the possibility of freezing rain. news 4 darcy spencer is in leesburg, virginia tonight where there's still a few slick spots out there. how are things looking? any better out there? >> reporter: overall not too bad. we drove out here from northwest washington this afternoon and i have to say really not too bad. this is route 7 here in leesburg, and traffic is getting by just fine. here's a couple of cars coming now. you just want to watch. keep your speeds down just a little bit. we hit an icy patch a little earlier this evening and so there are some of those slick spots out there that you want to look out for. here's one of the dangerous things that still is lingering. some icy spots like this. this is a solid sheet of ice right here in this parking lot and whether you're walking through or driving through you definitely want to be careful. let's go to some video we shot

just a short time ago. this was at a gas station here in the leesburg area. some people were having little bit difficulty getting in and out of the parking lot because there's an ice build up and people we talked to said the roads are not too bad. keep your speeds down. some people had a little bit of a hard time getting out of their developments and driveways. let's hear what those drivers had to say about the road conditions? >> it's not too bad. i have a four wheel drive just to make sure so i'm not sliding around. normally the side roads are the worse coming out of my house is troubling because they didn't do too much. my dad has a snowplow so i get to go where i need to go. >> i just came from winchester. the road is not too bad out there. drive slow. >> nobody slipping or sliding or crashing? >> not yet. i'm pretty sure later tonight as it freezes up it will start doing that. >> reporter: another thing you

want to be careful about the sidewalks. a lot of people are slipping and sliding on the sidewalks. we saw some people walking out in the street because the sidewalks are so icy so now we're just getting prepared for this arctic blast. reporting live from leesburg, darcy spencer, news 4. >> the deep freeze already gripping part of the country. the midwest and east coast dealing with bone chilling temperatures. indianapolis the cold came with snow. up to an inch per hour creating white out conditions. residents made the best of it, sledding and some biking but they also cleaned out store shelves in order to prepare for the next three days. in new york, no one was injured when a delta plane skidded off the runway at jfk airport but icy runways forced the airport to be suspended takeoffs and landings. 3,000 flights have been cancelled nationwide today and how to sands more delay. today jetblue announced it will waive change and cancellation fees for customers traveling

between thursday january 2nd and tomorrow. the waiver does apply to dulles, reagan, national and bwi. dozens of families woke up to fire today at an arlington apartment building. the flames broke out at a building on south greenbrier street. fire crews had to race to get everybody out safely. >> reporter: it was like awakening to a nightmare for residents of these apartment buildings in falls church. >> it was like chaos. >> reporter: some said they heard two explosions. >> first the fire detector went off and we were baking a cake. i said check the cake honey. she said no it's not that. >> reporter: it was a fire that started in a ground floor apartment. began at 9:30 and went three alarms. >> black smoke. you could not see visibility. >> reporter: some residents got

out quickly. >> i ran out of the house with my cell phone. >> reporter: you do think about loved ones. >> started to get hot so i picked up my son and my whole family and told them to get out. >> reporter: barbara recalls seeing a woman in a window. she use ad walker and knew that woman was trapped. >> the woman is screaming and i say what's your floor. >> reporter: she alerted firefighters to the woman who was rescued as were a number of residents. others got out via balconies or second floor stories. there was one serious injury from smoke inhalation. this fire went to multiple alarms but one of the challenges in fighting the fire was that though these buildings have separate addresses they are all connected by long hallways. >> smoke travels in the open hall weighs was a concern. >> the fire department do an incredible work. but everybody was one panic. a historic elementary school

destroyed by fire in virginia. pictures and cell phone video show the flames completely engulfing the old colonial beach elementary school. the school was condemned after the 2011 earthquake and was being used for storage. students used temporary trailers on the school site. elementary school students will have the day off tomorrow while school officials decide what to do. the rapid change in temperatures has caused several water main breaks in our area, the latest one in southeast this afternoon. this happened at the intersection of southern avenue and benning road. the inbound lane of southern avenue is closed. early this morning a 24 inch main broke on greenbelt road in greenbelt. some businesses were affected but we're told everybody is back online tonight and yesterday a pipe burst at the construction site for laurel town center sending water spewing 50 feet in the air there. no homes were affected. we are following a

developing story right now in colorado. one person is dead after a small plane crash at the aspen county airport this afternoon. investigators say two other people on board were injured. there's no official word on the cause of the crash but according to air traffic control recordings the plane abandoned its first landing attempt because of high winds. ntsb investigators are headed to the scene now. president obama and his daughters back in d.c. tonight after a holiday vacation in hawaii. we'll look at the week ahead for the president as he and congress return network. plus, a massive fire 20 stories plus, a massive fire 20 stories above the streets of manhattan

. one person was killed and another still in critical condition tonight after a massive fire at a new york city high rise. this three-alarm fire started on the 20th floor of the midtown building around 11:00 this morning. smeeng flames could be seen shooting out of the building. at least seven other residents were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 200 new york city firefighters responded to this call. president obama is back in washington after two weeks in hawaii for the holidays. the president and his two

in northern virginia tonight falls church police say they made an arrest in last week's shooting at a taco bell. police say moore and the victim were acquaintances and got into an argument outside of the taco bell. the victim was shot four times in the torso but is expected to be okay. more than 200 customers and employees were rushed out of a walmart in laurel today. anne arundel fire officials say the store had to be evacuated because of a carbon dioxide leak. while responding to the leak crews treated an injured

employee. they say the injuries were not related to the leak, however. a u.s. coast guard ice breaker is the latest ship heading to antarctica to try to rescue several other ships stuck on ice. a russian research vessel has been trapped since christmas eve. a chinese ice breaker got stuck trying to rescue that crew. more than 120 crew members are on two boats. the coast guard's polar star ice breaker was stationed in australia and has started its journey to rescue them. so a lot of folks and a lot of kids wondering if they will get another snow day or another ice day and that is not at all the case because temperatures are going get warmer, right before we dip again >> temperatures will continue to warm overnight into the morning hours tomorrow. and then throughout the day tomorrow we drop tomorrow evening, we plummet. we're talking about a 30 to 40 degree temperature drop from tomorrow morning on into

tomorrow night. so we are going to experience bitter cold moving into the area very quickly. here are your weather headlines. freezing rain comes to an end around 9:00 tonight. again we're not worried about refreezing because most locations will remain well above 32 degrees in overnight tonight. early tomorrow morning, heading in to work for that morning commute you're dealing with rain, potentially ending as snow. you'll see that on future weather. then our focus turned to frigid temperature monday night tuesday on into early wednesday. we'll l records during this time period to see the records we could potentially be breaking. pockets of freezing rain in northern virginia up into west virginia. we'll don't track scattered rain this evening but this is the rain that arrives tomorrow morning. it will arrive around 5:00 a.m. and this is the rain we're dealing with for our morning commute.

this is the rain with the cold front that will bring in that arctic blast that's already gripping portions of the midwest and the northern plains. again, this rain moves in around 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. you can get the storm team 4 radar on our app. it will being a great to have that over the next few days and see exactly how cold it is, what the winds are, what the wind chill temperature is. with future weather 11:00 tonight scattered rain across the area. that's when that stead ju rain moves in around 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, potentially heavier in spots. snow back to the west over areas like frostburg and petersburg. 7:00 a.m. still mainly dealing with rain across the area. as quickly as the rain arrives it is out of here by 10:00, 11:00. little or no snow accumulation. tomorrow afternoon we're breezy and we're turning cold. temperatures right now for the most part we're at or above freezing for many locations. 37 in washington.

and i am tracking some fog. fog tomorrow morning as well. some fog at 7:00 a.m. rain. 43 degrees. notice how our temperatures fall throughout the day. 10:00 a.m. we're down to 40. at that point we're tracking showers with chance of snow. breezy by dry at 3:00 p.m. down to 37. we drop to 30 degrees at 6:00 p.m.. 20s for those of you in the suburbs. look at the wind chills. by 10:00 tomorrow night in the single digits. then i want gets worse from there. 6:00 a.m. on tuesday we're looking at a wind chill in washington of 9:00 below zero. 14 below in martinsburg. 20 below in winchester. wind chill temperatures on monday into tuesday and early wednesday could be as low as anywhere from 15 to 30 degrees below zero. especially further back to the west we're looking at the coldest wind chill temperatures there. we start to shake the chill erica throughout the day on wednesday as we warm to 30
