have a new coach. hello, everybody. >> washington's football team finally gets its man. >> today the red skins made jay gruden their new head coach. we've been team coverage throughout the evening on this new hire. >> let's go out to the park where they're waiting for the news conference and big introduction. guys? >> reporter: we're just about a minute away. tony riley, the head of public relations is speaking to the media. we're being told it's still going to be another minute away from the official introduction of the washington red skins brand-new coach jay gruden. we're expecting the general manager to step up first and formally introduce jay gruden. he spent the last three season with the ben always as the offensive coordinator. this after a long week of interviews. they decided that they found their man. it all started tuesday night when bruce allen and other red

skins met with jay gruden, they interviewed formally yesterday here at the park. today he signed that deal for a five-year contract here with the washington red skins. you think gruden, you think monday night football, but there's a lot more to this gruden family. jason is joins me here. can you tell me a little bit more about jay gruden. >> gruden is such a big nam in the nfl. 46 years old, offensive coordinator for cincinnati. he has a long, long resume, but seems like the guy for this job to take this organization to the next level. >> let's meet him right now. >> welcome. we'll open the press conference today with a -- raise your hand and be recognized before you ask questions. at this time i would like to introduce -- >> thank you, tony. good afternoon. exciting day for the washington red skins. a very important day for our
4:02 pm
upcoming season and our future. you know, as we talked about about ten or 11 days ago, we were going to take this selection process very seriously in analyzing everything we have done as an organization in order to improve it. and the first step was finding the right coach for this team. the best way we could find the new leadership was searching the coaches. as you know and it's been well documented, we met with several coaches in person and talked to dozens of others on the telephone. the nfl is a special fraternity. these coaches that came in, we got to hear new ideas, new plans, and really a new attitude. but this fraternity that jay belongs to is really the
4:03 pm
references, the people they work with who would call at all hours of the evening to tell us how great a particular candidate was. it was a wonderful experience, dealing with these men, because the nfl at the end of the day, no difference than it's always been, it's about the players, the coaches and the fans. this league is very fortunate to have coaches on the sideline of the integrity that we met during this process and have talked to on the phone. but as i said at that press conference about 10 or 11 days ago, we were looking for a new leader, somebody who can inspire or football team. we knew it was more than just xs and os. it was about finding the right person to build the team kennel industry that we needed. we needed someone who would be a
4:04 pm
good teammate to the coaches, the organization, and the players in the locker room. through this search, we kept looking for that leader and teacher. fortunately for us t. the san diego chargers beat the cincinnati bengals and we were able to bring jay in. he got to interview with the people here, scott campbell, brown, eric shaffer, and of course also he met with dan snider. so what we found is the guy i really come back to one of the greatest quotes i know in sports or life that former washington red skins coach mark levy was in the hall of fame that said -- where would you rather be than right here right now? that quote is really what we were looking for.
4:05 pm
someone who had the fire in his belly to come and lead the washington red skins this season. i would like to introduce to everybody the new head coach of the washington red skins, mr. jay gruden. >> thank you. [ applause ] >> thank you, first off, i'd like to thank my family. my wife sherry is in the audience, my sons joey jack, my other son jay jay couldn't be here, my mother kathy gruden, she's at home watching, i'm sure. my dad jim gruden, football coach, a football man, a football person, really instilled passion, commitment and loyalty to me at a very young age in the game of football. my brother jim, who taught me there's things other than football that are important and of course my brother jon, who i wouldn't be sitting here today without learning about everything i know about football from him. what a great brother, a great person, a great football coach. thank you to them.
4:06 pm
i'd like to thank mike brown and marvin lewis for the opportunity for being the offensive coordinator for the ben always. they took a chance on me. we had some great seasons, and it was a great opportunity. i would like to thank the bengal coaches staff and of course the players for their commitment to coming to work every day and their commitment to excellence. you know, they provided us with a great spark and great group to coach and a lot of fun. i'd like to thank dan snider and bruce allen, obviously this is an opportunity, a once in a lifetime kind of deal. i will do my best to make sure that i put a competitive football team on the field each and every day. really it's not about me, though. it's about the washington red skins, this is about the fans, this is about the workers at fedex field, about the players, the coaches, about a commitment to being a consistently great franchise. we want to provide everybody
4:07 pm
with the proud sense beer going to come to work every day and do the best we can to put a competitive football team on the field every day. i look forward to the chance to interview and talk to many coach that is have the players' best interests at heart, that will motivate, teach and provide them with every opportunity to be great. i look forward to the challenge. thank you, again, to dan snider and bruce allen for this opportunity. thank you. >> dave owens from cbs dc, first of all congratulations. >> thank you. >> reporter: this team is coming off not just a 3-13 year, but quote where a lot of distasteful things happened, drama-filled things. what convinced you in the interview process that this was a place that wasn't filled with dysfunction, and how will it be different until your tenure? >> i don't know what happened last year. i know that interviews with dan snider and bruce allen and
4:08 pm
hat the passion for excellence is there. all's they want to do is win. they're going to provide me with every avenue to win. i don't know what happened last year, and i don't care what happened last year. all i care about is moving forward. i'm going to provide the players with every avenue for them to succeed and be great. moving forward, we're going to forget about the past and look forward to the future every day. >> when you say you don't note what happened last year, there were various reports on -- at the network level every day, so you're saying you didn't hear and see any of those things? >> i don't hear, but i don't believe all the reports. i wasn't in the locker room. so i was worried about my season, my team at the time. and when i'm with the washington red skins, i'm not going to read about the eagles or the cowboys. i'm going to worry about the red skins locker room and making sure we're one team with one goal, and every intention of winning as many games as we can. >> joseph white with the associated press. i was actually going to ask
4:09 pm
something else, but you said you don't care. surely one of the first things you'll do is review -- >> absolutely. >> -- what's gone right, what's gone wrong, what you want to keep -- i get you would want to rephrase that. >> we'll review the plays and place from the year before and we'll find the best players that we want to keep moving forward, the free agents that were available that we want to re-sign. the things that we can help each player improve upon and their game, the corners, safeties, running backs, there's a lot of work to do. when you're 3-13 there's not one particular player or reasons, there's a lot of reasons and things that need to be fixed. >> reporter: to follow up, which assistants are you going to retain on the staff and who roles will they have? >> i'm going to interview a lot of coaches. i'm going to look at each coach that's been retained by bruce here and interview everybody, and make sure -- i know there's
4:10 pm
a lot of coaches here that can coach. there's a lot of good football people here that can coach. there's good football people across the country looking to work and looking to work for the washington red skins. this opportunity is a once in a lifetime deal. i've already had about 350 texts from great people, great coaches looking to coach. i don't think finding a great coach and coaching staff will be difficult. it's finding the right ones that fit what i want to do and what the players want to do. >> mark masky from "the washington post." as you chose between this job and the other opportunities you had, what role did the existing relationships you had play in that? also, what role did the presence of robert griffin play in that? >> big role. i know brings. i have a history with bruce. i know his passion. he wants to provide the head coach with every opportunity to win. i know bruce is not about bruce. i know bruce knows it's not
4:11 pm
about jay. we know it's about us. moving forward it's about the washington red skins, the fans, the players, the equipment men, the staff. we're going to do it together. it will be a different task, but working together with dan and bruce, we can accomplish a lot. >> and also the presence of robert griffin, how much will that factor into your decision? >> robert is a great quarterback. it's very exciting. anytime you want to move forward with a franchise, that's a very important position, as we well know. he's a great player. i look forward to a chance to coaching him. >> chick hernandez, bruce, you had said that you planned on, and if it went well into the playoffs, to find your coach. obviously we're here in week 2. what was it about the interview process that the man to your right that said this is my guy right here right now? >> it's really how the playoffs played out. i joked about the ben always
4:12 pm
losing that game f we had met with several coaches and decided that when we found the right person for this time, we would propose to him. through the long day of yesterday, and the whole interview process, it was clear to everybody here that jay was the right man for us right now. >> coach, chris leslie, espn. when you see robert griffin iii, what are a couple things you would like him to improve on? is it too early in that process based on what people you've talked to? >> i have not really studied him on that type of foundation yet. i've seen him on highlights and some of the games that we carry over and study other teams. i see a ton of talent. i see a guy that can run and maneuver in the pocket. i see accuracy. i see long ball accuracy.
4:13 pm
i see toughness. i see a guy that wants to win and i see a strong leader. i see every trait that a quarterback has to have to be successful. so why wouldn't you want to coach a guy like that? i'm excited to coach him and hopefully he's excited to play here. >> jay sec her from "the washington times." you've your stints in the arena league and ufl, what makes you believe you are ready for this head coaching opportunity now? >> it's everybody's opinion, but i've -- whatever levels whether the arena league or ufl, you still have to motivate, coach, teach players to compete and motivate players. you have to weather storms, losing streaks, fumbles, interceptions, losing the playoffs, losing three in a row, winning three in a row. there's always things you can learn from whatever league you

coach. but my strength i believe is dealing with players, motivating players, keeping players excited to come to work and not letting them get too hide or too low. letting them understand that honestly, as a head coach, i have their best interests at heart. my only thing is to provide them with every rye source so they can get better. i think as a took player, elth they le appreciate that. they want to be coached and they want to play well. we're going to provide them with every resource to do that. >> espn 980. welcome to dc. >> hey, doc, how are you doing? >> i'm doing great, my friend. are you locked and sold on the 34? are you open to change? >> this team is built for the 34. they've been a 34 for a while. i hate the 34 as an offensive coordinator, so i think with the
4:15 pm
players in place i would love to stable there. that will be evaluated. i know when we played geffen the washington red skins it's difficult to run against them. there's a core foundation in place. i'm excited to have a chance to talk to the candidates to still instilled a 3-4 defense. >> jay, mike jones, "the washington post." none of the guys on staff have -- you've had history, did that make this more attractive because they're here? >> yes, it really did, but still there's a lot of other candidates i want to talk to. they understand football and love football. hopefully when i go through the interview process of the coaches i know that need jobs and are good coaches that i feel like can take this team to the next level. if 24th emerge, great, but there are good people and coaches in this building, yes. >> diana ra sin i sinni channele
4:16 pm
in dc. if there's smell you want to accomplish right now, what would that be? >> i want the players that come in and know they're going to get the best. s best ownership, the best general manager, the best training staff, the best equipment managers, i want them to feel a sense of confidence and sense of pride. right away, the sooner the better, then we'll have a chance to succeed at a rapid rate. >> john con, espn. the word "trust" was used a lot to describe the relationship with robert griffin iii, and the previous coaches. what are the elements that you go become to build that trust? how do you go about building that? >> it's got to be genuine.
4:17 pm
he's got to believe it. i'm going to let him know i'm trustworthy. he has to understand i expect a lot from the starting quarterback. i expect him to come in, prepared, work hard, and take the blame on some throws. i expect him to be a great leader. i expect him to do extra things to be great. as long as he's working his butt off, i with provide him everybody he needs, if he doesn't like a play, i'm not going to call the play. i want him to be comfortable that he's doing everything we're doing. >> can you talk about your offensive philosophy a bit? west coast is the easy term, but do you. >> yeah, always thrown in there. >> and zone blocking, power blocking? >> i like them all. i've never found a play that i didn't like that works. the one thing i want to do is during my process in the next few days, i want to study the
4:18 pm
offensive personnel that we have in place. they've done good things here offensively. i think they're in the top ten, so they have a system in place that's very good. they're an outsigh zone blocking team. they can do inside zone. so there's a bit of everything. i don't think anything in the offense anymore is just -- we are this. we have to adhere to what we have offensively. we can do the read options, run bubble screens, run deep balls, play action deep things. i think the whole idea to be a successful offense is to be diverse and be good at a lot of different things. >> csn washington. jay, to be clear, you have not picked your coordinators. there was a report that shawn mcveigh would be elevated to coordinator. >> nice. good for shawn. i do like shawn. he's a heck of a coach, but
4:19 pm
we'll go through the process, and hopefully -- there's a lot of great coaches, like i said, out there, and he's a great person and a great coach. >> jay, have you talked to robert yet at all? >> i have not talked to robert. i looked forward to it, though. >> michael philadelphia lips "richmond times dispatch." this is a franchise that's been through a lot of head coaches. what kind of answers did you get when you were doing your due diligence that led you to believe you could be successful here? >> just talking to mr. snider, dan snider and bruce. i just have a firm pleef everything they were saying and their passion for the team and city is legitimate. i'm a pretty good reader of people. i can tell when i'm being lied to. i can't honestly tell you this, that dan snider and bruce allen have the fans' best interests at hard and the players' best interests at heart. all they want to do is field a
4:20 pm
winning team. they're given me an opportunity to take this team to a great level, and i'm going to do everything i can to prove them right. >> bruce, first of all, even though you said ten days ago that the new structure would be that you would have final say working with scott, is that going to be the case under the agreement you worked with jay here? >> what's great about where jay came from cincinnati, the coaches were involved with the personnel process. we're going to make our selections based on the red skins choices, and the scouting department will give us the players and lists, and we're going to work through the coaches and analyze it. at the end of the day every of the players already chosen by the redskins as a group. jay and i talked about how we want to do it, and it really will be a group effort. >> contractually you have the final say? >> at the end of the day, it would be my responsibility.
4:21 pm
>> reporter: to follow up on the gentleman sitting next to me. obviously you know how to coach, but so did many of the other qualified men who have stood before the fans over the last 14 season, so two things -- do you believe you have to reverse a culture of losing? not just a couple bad seasons, but a culture of losing and dysfunction. secondly do you believe the fact that you are a clean slate, you don't believe a lot of the expectations, as some of the coaches have brought here, that could help you in that respect? >> i think every head coach has great expectations. otherwise they wouldn't be hired. we have great expectations. we expect to win soon. there's a great history here for the washington redskins. there's a lot of pride. the fans are unbelievable here. 40 straight seasons, i believe, of sellouts. they expect a winner. they don't expect anything else. anything that's happened in the past, we learn from past history, but we have to move
4:22 pm
forward. all of the players, they want to forget about last year and quickly move into this year. you can see the history of other teams, they've been able to bound back if the players believe and we come in to work hard. we have to instill that faith. but, you know, the history of this organization is something we can all be proud of. anytime we put on a redskin jersey, the players have to be excited to play. >> jay, mike wise from "the washington post." you come from a football family, obviously. can you give us a bit of the last 24-hour whirlwind was there a. moment when you said, geez, i'm a nfl head coach now. >> yeah, right about now. it's been a whirlwind. i was fortunate to interview last year and go with the ten
4:23 pm
sees tightens a couple days ago, but when i got here, interviewed with bruce, dan and the staff, it started to sink in. at dan's house the other night, meeting his wife, it's an unbelievable feeling. it makes you nervous, excited. a lot of different motions, you want to get started right now, but there is so much to do before you get started, but you're right, it is very exciting, and i'm thrilled for the >> did you have a moment where you called your brother, your father, or anybody -- or you got emotional or a good word with them? >> yeah, i called them all. i called my family and jack told his basketball coach, he put it on twitter. but, you know, they're all excited. you know, it's really a great experience, and my mom and dad
4:24 pm
are obviously very proud. my brother is very proud. my other brother is very proud. we have a very tight family. so to be able to share that news was a great experience. >> two more. >> what are yew thoughts on the zone read option? >> i love it. yeah, we ran it some in cincinnati with andy, and i think it's part of football now. it's something of to get yew defense prepared for. it's something that has a place in the national football league. >> reporter: do you anticipate calls your plays? and then how much do you expect to be involved? >> i will call plays, yes, and will be involved in personnel decisions, but it will be -- it's going to be a lot about a lot of different people involved in it. we're not all going to agree all the time, but the big thing is to make sure that we hear each other out in a calm cool
4:25 pm
fashion, and as long as everybody has the team's best interests at heart, we will come to an agreement. that won't be an issue. >> that concludes the press conference. photographers, let's get ready. we'll get a photo op. the voice of the washington redskins, jay gruden calling his five-year deal a once in a lifetime deal. what struck me, he started out very humble, and then you saw his confidence grow, humor in there, and the fire in his belly that gm bruce allen talked about, the reason they hired him. >> confidence is something he says is key in building in the players and the rest of washington's organization to help him succeed. and so it begins, the eray of jay gruden. the bengals former offensive coordinator and now dan snider's sixth head coach. >> this may by the magic k45678.
4:26 pm
as for rg3, he says he sees a ton of talent. dianna and jason, what do you think? >> reporter: he was nerve out up there, but how could he not be? there's probably at least four dozen of the media here along with staff, along with his family. as this press conference went on, you saw him gain confidence, as he started to share some of hess thoughts orb approach to coaching. he did reference that -- you can tell he's excited to be a part of here, and it's not about looking back, it's about looking forward. that's the message that i took away from that. last year is over, thises a new season. >> i think the biggest thing i took away is that jay gruden did not talk to robert griffin iii during the process. we all thought he would have a
4:27 pm
big role in finding out who would be the next head coach, apparently that wasn't the case. what i like about jay gruden, he's an offensive mind. he played quarterback. he understands what it takes to motivate and drive those guys. that is the biggest key for this team. i think jay gruden can enhance that. >> and also the other big news item. no coordinator had been named yet. so that's still to come. i'm sure we'll learn about that coming up. he said it's all a process. back to you guys. >> thanks a lot. for more, log-on to our website nbcwashington.com. and we'll be ri
