it has been snowing to the north and west for hours, as the storm moves east, snow totals could add up quickly. we have team coverage of the snow now impacting most of our area. take a look at storm team 4 radar. the white on the screen is snow. more is coming, and it will be heavy at times. >> plow when they get to like an inch or two on the ground. >> road crews are out right now and they do have a plan. news 4 also has crews spread out across our area and we'll let you know what to expect if you have to be out on those roads. good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 midday on this snow day. i'm barbara harrison. it's tuesday, january 21st, 2014.

right now, we're in the middle of what could be the biggest winter storm to hit our area in three years. more than 250 school systems in our area are closed today because of the snow. the federal government is closed today as well. emergency and telework employees have their work at home. check your flight status before heading to the airport if you're going out of town today. more than 60 flights have been canceled at local airports. about 300 have been delayed. our news 4 crews have been out all morning, watching the change in conditions. megan mcgrath is in leesburg, melissa mollet. we begin with chuck bell. chuck? snowflakes have been flying across much of the area for several hours. that will continue at least the next little bit. we may have our snow lingering into the evening how are as well. outside for now, all anyone cares about is the where, the when and the how much.

the where is the easiest question to answer. the where is going to be everywhere. temperatures right now generally are in the 30s. winter storm warnings have been posted all across the area for the remainder of the day tonight, pink shaded counties under the warning, everywhere in the news 4 nation. the when is starting right now. and the when will be ending later on this evening. so now through midnight, ending along i-81 about 9:00 this evening, ending along i-95 about 11:00 and ending down into southern maryland probably not long after, about midnight. the how much is where all the question marks are. the forecast for now, about 4" downtown and maybe 7" in some of the suburbs. higher amounts to the north and lower to the south. we'll break it down neighborhood by neighborhood in a few more minutes. for now, back to the news. >> all right. thank you. and we are looking at the roads in virginia now. the virginia department of

transportation crews spent the night and early morning hours pretreating roads throughout our area. we checked with vdot. they tell us 4,000 trucks are out on the roads in northern virginia. megan mcgrath is live in leesburg, where the flakes are already flying. you've got quite a bit of snow down already. >> it didn't take very long to accumulate. we saw our first snowflakes right before 9:00 this morning. we're a couple of hours into it. route 7 near plaza, the intersection with plaza street. you can see we are starting to see some slushy conditions. i tell you, it would have been a whole lot worse had they not done all that pretreating that they did overnight. vdot crews worked through the night, loading the trucks with salt and readying the plows for action. >> we drop the salt in the rough areas, like on the ramps and stuff like that. major roads have been retreated so in the beginning

they look pretty good. it's now been snowing for a couple of hours, so conditions are beginning to go downhill. route 7 in leesburg is pretty slippery at this point. >> it's sticking fairly quickly. i've run into a couple of different stores and i've come out and i have to do this all over again. >> and grocery stores are doing a brisk business. you don't want to get snowed in without food. >> milk, toilet paper. just a few -- things for my dog. >> reporter: also busy, gas stations. >> filling up. it's cold. it's snowing. it's going to be, you know, a blizzard. and so we've got to get the gas in the car. >> reporter: and just a couple of hours into this storm, you can see the grass is completely coated here. and, sorry kids, this is not very packable. this is not great snowman making material. not the greatest for snowball fights. but certainly pretty. we are expecting, according to chuck bell -- he told me in the leesburg area, perhaps seven or

park with a look at the condition conditions there. melissa, you haven't gotten too much snow there yet, have you? >> not too much. in the last couple of minutes, barbara, the wind has really picked up. we have been all over the county this morning. some people excited. some people just look iing to prepare in case they have to hunker down the next few days. take a look here behind me, route 1 in college park, you can see the road not really a problem at this point. who knows what's to come. hours before the first flights were scheduled to fall, the parking lot of this shopper's food warehouse already packed. >> things to make soup, orange juice, some milk. >> reporter: david miles is stocking up, too, in case he ends up inside for longer than expected. >> getting ready for the snow. i am just trying to, i don't know. i've got kids. i'm just trying to prepare. make sure we have enough. >> plous at the ready. just waiting for word. >> lot of extra long johns and extra shoes, extra shirts.

it's going to be quite different for sure in the next couple of hours. best advice, stay off the roads. if you absolutely have to be out, bring that cell phone charger because, let me tell you, it could be some time before you get back home. barbara? >> thank you so much. in the district, 200 trucks are ready to work 12-hour shifts spreading salt and plowing the streets. we checked with the district's department of transportation. they said crews were on their routes by 8:00 this morning. metro says if you have to travel, you should do so before the worst of the storm hits and after the storm leaves. right now, metro is running its normal train service. the agency says fewer trains could run later in the day depending on ridership and weather conditions. metro buses are rung on their normal schedule today. that could change. the agency canceled metro access service for today. mark canceled service on its brunswick lines. they are running on an s schedule today. those of you who use it know

what that means. to aaron gilchrist at the live desk with closures that are just in. what's going on? >> as this snow starts to pick up in intensity and pile up a little bit, changes in government statuses. allstate offices in maryland and facilities just closed at 11:00 this morning, obviously except for those involved in emergency operations. arlington county offices will close at noon today. courts will close all of the facilities in arlington county will close at noon today as well. fairfax county, the schools there -- the schools are already crowsed. offices did open today. those offices now in fairfax county will close at noon today. places that are polling facilities for -- in fairfax county for today's special election in the 33rd senate district, those places will stay open until 7:00 pm unless the governor declares a state of emergency. barbara, that's the latest. back to you. >> aaron, thank you. a reminder, you can track the winter storm on the go. can you see live radar right on

your smart phone. storm team 4 weather app. search nbc washington weather. >> learning about a bizarre accident that led to huge backups on the beltway this morning. a man got in a crash on the exit ramp from the beltway on to route 50 on 315 this morning. he then tried to run and fell off an overpass on to the beltway where he was hit and killed by a car. another crash then happened in the backup and you can see the damage to the car here that ran into a tractor trailer. the beltway was backed up for several miles for more than three hours this morning. and we're still working to find out how two other people died. police found the victims inside a row house along girard street early this morning. this is across the street from howard university. police are calling this a murder investigation, but they have not released any information about how the victims actually died.

firefighters in montgomery county are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in a large home in bethesda. investigators say the fire started in the basement of this home on moreland lane. the flames quickly spread up the walls of the house and to the third floor. three people were in the house at the time, but everyone is expected to be okay. we're starting to see the snow sticking, especially on the grassy areas around our region. take a look at these live pictures from northwest washington. we have news4's pat colin's out with his snow stick. he's out there somewhere, finding out what you're doing and what you're wearing on this snow day. do you see him out there? where's pat? plus, we'll get an update on airports in our area and what the weather is doing to air travel today. and also, what we -- we want to know what you think. snow, love it or hate it?

if you're planning on flying out of town today, you may want to check your flight status before you leave the house. more than ,400 flights have already been canceled because of the winter storm that's bearing down on the midatlantic and the northeast right now. 164 of those flights are out of reagan national airport. 109 are out of dulles. 79 have been canceled at bwi. many people in the district are enjoying their snow day at home. we have a new challenge for you folks out there. news 4 pat collins is live in northwest washington where he often is when we had snow falling on us. pat, what's the challenge? tell us what you're seeing out there right now. >> barbara, i'm at my snow spot

a foot. nonetheless, it still has the opportunity, anyway, to be one of our better snow storms in the last couple of years. mainly because the last few years have been positively anemic as far as snow is concerned. it doesn't take much to move the needle anymore. the loop over the last hour showing the progression of the snowflakes right along the i-95 corridor. there's just a little hint of a few rain drops at the very beginning of the onset. the snow comes down and it brings the cold air down with it. you might see one or two rain drops. this is going to be 99.9% a snow p problem for us. it's difficult to forecast because it's an alberta clipper. it has to draw in moisture from the atlantic at the end of the event to get what we're hoping for in snow amounts. capital beltway right now, route 50, route 7, route 15, all getting covered up in the snow right now. there's a little hole in the snow back across the southern parts of the shenandoah valley. there's more back here. this area of low pressure and

snow in west virginia and kentucky now as it dives for the virginia capes, it will try to tap that virginia moisture. we'll remain cautiously optimistic. they will be measuring snow in the inches, not the millimeters. full force winter, everybody. winter storm is arriving now. most everybody has seen their first snowflakes. the chances of washington getting at least two inches of snow, 90%. at least four inches of snow, 60% and only a 20% chance of six inches or more. it will have severe travel impacts, no doubt about that. if we can get the snow to heavy up a little bit, we could get as much as an inch per hour. that will make travel dangerous, treacherous and very much not something you should be doing. and windchills will be dropping down near zero and dangerous windchills are a big part of this storm. for more on that, let's go to amelia seigle, dealing with the

snow. >> reporter: it's not windy just yet. as the snow continues throughout the day, the winds will continue to pick up. in addition, the temperatures will plummet. right now we're at 33 degrees outside of our station here at northwest. i was out here earlier this morning with wake up. guess where the temperature was this morning, around 40. we've already fallen about 7 degrees. as we get on through tonight to noon tomorrow, dealing with dangerous windchills. overnight tonight by 11:00, we're looking at a temperature of 18 degrees. windchills tomorrow will be anywhere from 5 to 20 degrees below zero. so, very cold air making its way into the area. there you see, chuck, 10:00 am tomorrow morning. that's not the worst of it. windchills across the area about 4 to 10 degrees below zero. right now, it's not too bad as far as temperatures are concerned. i am seeing snow collect on the weather patio out here, but not on our front circle.

inauguration ceremony is under way. he took 60% of the vote in november's election over democrat barbara buono. organizers canceled the party scheduled tonight on ellis island because of the weather. christie's second term is already surrounded in controversy, though. his administration is being investigated for allegedly ordering traffic tie-ups on the gw bridge as political retribution. today's winter storm is making traffic difficult. what you should do before getting in a car and hitting the snowy roads. why people across the country are being asked to con conserve propane.

than usual today because of this winter storm. live look in frederick, maryland. if you do have to hit the road, we have tips for you courtesy of aaa. drive slowly, even if the roads aren't covered with snow. this allows for your car to warm up properly. avoid using cruise control to allow yourself more time to react to skidding or other cars. keep a winter weather kit in your car at all times. ice scraper, flares, flashlight and jumper cables. you may also want to get gas at some point today. aaa suggests you keep your gas tank at least half full during cold weather like this. that will help prevent the gas line from freezing up. transportation reporter adam tuss saw those lines at the costco in fairfax yesterday. look at that. people waited 15 minutes or more just to get up to the pump. one county wants to make sure you have a place to get out of the cold during this storm. charles county has warming centers open right now. they'll be open through friday. they include the capital cl

"weather center." chuck? >> barbara, good morning once again. good morning, everybody. snow falling, continuing as i look out the windows in northwest washington. snowflakes going left to right. little bit of a breeze out there. temperatures will continue to fall along with the snowflakes. current temperature at national airport, down to 30 degrees. we were at 39 degrees at 3:00 am. once the snow moves in, that's when the temperatures really start to come down along with it. and temperatures will continue to fall through the remainder of the day. here it is on storm team 4 radar. band of snow showers right through the heart of downtown washington right now. light snow moving into parts of southern maryland. there's another batch of snow now getting ready to pinwheel out of southern west virginia and southwestern virginia as it makes that turn and pivots in our direction. we may get a little break in the action here through the mid to late afternoon hours and another secondary chance of snow coming in after that. so, if the snow tapers off in your neighborhood for a little while, toedon't think it's

completely over. last of the snowflakes falling midnight tonight. future weather forecast, 11:30 this morning, pretty much snow from top to bottom on the map there. by 2:00, continuing to snow. may ease up a bit between 2:00 and 5:00. another chance of snow coming in the early evening hours. as that area of low pressure races off to the coast, another round of snow midnight or so, not long after that. and then the bitter cold really settles on in. snowfall forecast from the south sides of the metro down into southern maryland, southern maryland, three to four inches of snow. downtown, four to seven inches in the nearby suburbs. northern to western maryland, seven and as much as ten inches in a few spots. back to you for now. >> chuck, thank you. track the winter storm on your smart phone. or google play. >> people in loudon county are seeing the snow come down. many are at home, enjoying their

snow day. let's check back in with news 4's megan mcgrath in leesburg. megan? >> reporter: that's right, barbara. a lot of people are staying at home. kids are staying at home. people are telecommuting. we are seeing people out and about. route 7. while it is light traffic, we still have cars out here. so, people are going to the store. they're getting gas, and other thing this is morning. as for road conditions it depends where you are and where the plows have been the last half hour or so, we've noticed an improvement on route 7 where we are. that's because a big plow came through and pushed all of the slush out of the roadway. some other conditions as people are making their way, some to work and others running errand this is morning. take it easy out there. it depends where you are and whether or not the road has been pretreated. as we've been saying all morning

long, overnight, vdot crews were very, very busy. they were out there pretreating the major roads. residential streets have not been touched, not in the same way. they're in a different condition. they're a lot more slippery and snow covered. we've been talking to folks out and about this morning. they're pretty surprised how quickly this is all accumulating. >> i got a phone call from work at 6:00 am. it was completely clear. two hours later, i wake up and, yeah. >> reporter: and you're take ina live look here at one of the untreated parking lots in the area. as you can see, it is completely snow covered and pretty slick. take it easy out there on those secondary streets in the parking lots as you leave your house. once you get out to the major roads, a little bit of slush. not too bad. megan mcgrath, news 4. barbara, back to you.

>> thank you, megan. flakes are flying in prince george's county. people can expect to see between four and six inches of the white stuff today. melissa mollet is live in college park with a look at the conditions there right now. getting any more snow than when we saw you last? >> the wind is whipping every which way. you can see the accumulation here. when you look in grassy areas. as megan was mentioning, listening to one of her earlier live shots, it's not that great snowman making snow. it looks pretty. at least when it's on the grass. not the roadways or your sidewalk or driveway, of course t looks a little wet. no major issue there. look there at route 1. again not an issue. that road again was treated earlier this morning. so when you hit roads like that, not going to really be a problem. you do want to prepare, though, if you have to go out. do what my friends here across the parking lot has done. put those windshield wipers up.

when you come back to the car perhaps later today you're not dealing with a big disaster. i can tell you for sure the wind picking up a little bit out here in college park for us right now. and the snow as well. barbara? >> all right. thanks a lot. stay warm out there. we'll be back to you shortly with a dangerously low temperatures in the forecast, fema is reminding everyone to be safe today. here are a few tips that you might want to listen to, to stay warm. first, stay indoors as much as possible. if you use a space heater, put it on a hard, nonflammable surface, not on rugs or carpets. make sure to turn them off before you go to bed. another big worry in cold temperatures like this? freezing pipes. open cabinet doors below the kitchen and bathroom sinks so warm air can circulate around ose pipes. you can also keep a small trickle of both hot and cold water running through the night. if you haven't done so already, disconnect any hoses from outside spigots. if you heat your home with

propane, you may not be able to crank up the thermostat too high as the frigid temperatures arrive later. there is a nationwide propane shortage this morning. polar vortex that hit us a couple of weeks ago upped the demand and now 15 states have declared emergencies because of the short supply of propane. that's also causing prices to go up by as much as 46% over last winter. >> we don't know when we're getting it. we don't know if we're getting it. and all the propane companies are kind of in the same boat. >> you do awha ywhat you have to get it done and get it paid for. >> reporter: easing restrictions to allow propane drivers to be on the roads longer to try to get the fuel to people who need it. this storm is bringing more snow to d.c. than we've seen for years. you've been hearing that. weather channel's kate parker is live on capitol hill with more on how this storm is affecting us and the rest of the east coast. kate, good morning. >> reporter: man, we are talking about treacherous travel.

if you went out the door this morning and said, hey, it's not too shabby out here, temperatures are okay, you know, the roads are nice and dry, what a difference a few hours have made. we have a very low visibility. you can barely see the capital behind me. we are getting some stronger bands of snow, some heavier snow, some stronger winds as the afternoon goes on. we're starting to see the snow accumulate on grassy areas. good news is that these roads have been treated. sidewalks have been treated with salt. we're not seeing any slick spots or anything like that out here right now. for your evening commute home, we could be talking about major travel issues. very low visibility and then you throw in the fact that temperatures are going to be dropping well below freezing. we're already at 30 degrees right now in d.c. you start adding in those winds out of the northwest gusting up to 30 miles an hour. very dangerous travel tonight and dangerously cold temperatures. those windchills are going to be life threatening cold. so, definitely want to make sure you're bundling up, staying warm, doing what you can to stay

tying sandy aid to the approval of a real estate project. meeting between president obama and pope francis later this year. the two will meet at the vatican march 27th as part of a scheduled trip to europe for the president. president obama looks forward to discussing the fight against poverty and inequality with the pope. the president will also meet with italy's president and prime minister. right now in russia, police are looking for as many as four women who have threatened to attack the winter olympics. police are calling them black widows. this is one of them, a 24-year-old who may be in the sochi security zone. her husband was killed in a russian raid last year and she was injured. police now believe she wants to retaliate. it follo a threat on tape from the man who claims that they carried out the bombings in volgograd earlier this month. despite the threats, russia says the talking about windchills

tomorrow morning. amelia seigle is outside in the snow right now. amelia? >> reporter: our plummeting temperatures, breezy to windy conditions. right now windchill temperatures are in the teens. feeling about 18 in washington. here is how it will feel tonight at 10:00. 3 degrees in washington. at that point, areas of blowing snow that will lead to reduced visibilities. 6:00 am tomorrow morning, we'll be talking about more cancellations, at least delays, chuck, with it feeling 10 to 15 degrees below zero again. that's tomorrow morning. >> that will be dangerous stuff first thing tomorrow morning. i will not be surprised to see more school cancellations tomorrow. the next problem as we get into thursday morning may be a serious black ice problem as we have a little bit of melting tomorrow and an instant refreeze tomorrow night. snowfall amounts haven't changed our forecast just yet. four to maybe as much as seven inches. barbara? >> thank you, chuck.
