are seeing the cars with the incidents and the accidents, but what we saw most folks doing is to rush to the grocery store to get something to eat. >> we didn't have anything in the house. >> reporter: and with that, the folks in prince george's county headed out to the grocery stores in droves. >> it is a d.c. thing, because every time there is a storm, i feel like panic mode, and i have to get everything in the grocery store before it is gone. >> just pizza. >> reporter: nothing else? we could be in for days? >> well, i was prepared for the last one, and twa wee ago. >> reporter: after a week of false positives, this storm is promising to pack a punch. the salt trucks were loading up, and the town executive stopped p by to thank the crews for their work. >> as we were driving over here, we noticed the number of cars on the road, and it is going to be worse and freeze up. so if you don't have to be out, stay at home, and build a fire, and please, stay off of the road to let us do what we need to do. >> reporter: out on bowie, the crews were salting and treating the roadway, but the secondary,
5:04 pm
and the primary roads were covered with snow, and with the schools, and the local and federal governments closed today, there is one more reason to stay in. are you hoping that we have a few snow days coming? >> yes, that would be great. two to three feet, we are ready for it. >> reporter: and just talked with prince george's county school spokesman and no word yet of what will happen with the prince george's county schools tomorrow. and no word yet of what will happen with the prince george's government as well. but folks are standing by waiting for that information. in addition to all of the snow, we will be dealing with the serious cold, and the fire chief has a warning for folks as we go through this cold snap. reporting live in largo, i'm tracee wilkins for news4. thank you, tracee. most federal workers had a day off, but not the postal service. most carriers were slogging through the sleet and the snow all day today, and the public safety officers were on the job, and they have been busy. chris gordon is in upper

montgomery county, where there have been a few fender benders. chris? >> yes, more than 80 accident, and some involving a perm injury, and a couple of cars flipped over, and it is slippery. in the past hour, i spoke to police and fire spokespeople, and they say that your safety is their concern. >> reporter: this is route 355 near the milestone shopping center, and don't let the traffic light fool you, because it is slick with snow, and causing cars to slip and slide and some did collide. >> i tried to stop, and i passed a little bit, and then i think that she was trying to turn as well. and then she hit me, and you can see the bumper right there. it is really slippery, and the major roads, they are kind of okay, but when you try to turn into these places, it is really dangerous. >> reporter: spinning his wheels is how this driver was left when he hit the concrete lane divider and bottomed out.
5:06 pm
clearly the low point of his day, and from the height of the camera on our truck mast, we saw many near misses, and the drivers who used caution succeeded. accidents were a problem all day, all over montgomery kocoun. >> we are asking everybody to stay home as much as they can and not come out. let the road crews clear up the roads and make it safe for everybody tomorrow. >> reporter: and the snowplows are on the prowl, and businesses like milestone exxon clearing the snow from the parking lots. >> i am cleaning people's driveways and sidewalks and i'm busy, because i have ten customers so far. >> reporter: now the montgomery county executive isaiah leggett has declared a snow emergency as of 5:00 this evening which means that you are going to be towed if you park on area that are not

5:08 pm
booked to fly out tomorrow. >> and i saw that it was going to be bad, but push comes to shove, i won't fly out. >> reporter: i want to show you something over here, metro service, and an update on that. the above-ground metro service is running. it takes eight inches of snow on the ground for metro service to stop running, but as you can see above ground here, the trains are running, and we should tell you that the metro bus service is operating on the emergency routes, and that bus service has been obvious ly impacted. if you are coming to the airport the night, you have plenty of delays and cancellations in places like new york city. if you look at the flight awares or misery maps, new york city is being pounded right now, and we have a lot the deal with right here at reagan international as well. we will send it to you, and we will not throw a snowball at the camera just yet. >> we were ready, adam, just in case. take care out there. and the fairfax county schools were closed for the winter storm the, and this is the fourth school day off due to bad weather, and only three are

classes have been cancelled tonig tonight, and a vigil is scheduled. >> there is a special challenge for this winter storm for people in loudoun and fairfax county, because they are voting in a special election. >> yes, and it could determine a number of important issues before virginia lawmakers. >> and julie is live in loudoun county, and julie, is the weather impacting the voter turnout? >> how could it not? >> well, interesting story there, because northern virginians have rarely seen an election day like this one, and that is because most elections are not held in january, and this is a special election, and some officials believed that it would suppress the turnout, but turns out to be a surprise. >> reporter: several inches of snow were not about to keep this 77-year-old from doing her civic duty, cast iing a ballot in the special election.
5:17 pm
>> i figured that it is important enough. this is a big piece of the action in this one seat. >> reporter: residents in parts of loudoun and fairfax counties had to brave slippery seats to vote in the district senate race and it will determine if republicans or democrats control that area, and there was a low turnout, but they were surprised how many did show up. >> it is nuts that we came here at 9:00, and there were a lot of people here sh, and we decided leave because the wait was an hour, and we came back now, and the weather is still not that bad. >> reporter: until noon, loudoun county roads were in fairly good shape, and dozens of plows and salt trucks at work, but by afternoon, the snow began to stick. and some folks decided to tackle the fluffy snow? stages. this man made the first paz with the shovel before noon. >> well, they say that there is a lot of snow coming through, so i wanted to get an early start on it. >> reporter: and in fact, few

5:19 pm
>> that is how it works, huh? >> well, well come back indoors and it looked breezy out there. >> yes. >> and right kind of snow for sledding? >> yes, the powdery, and it is a perfect sledding snow, but you won't make snowmen or be able to make the snowballs across the area. look looking at what is happening right now, this is is the storm team 4x4 and shomari stone is out there as part of the team, and out there along the beltway, montgomery county, and you can see exactly what is going on out there, and the roads are really, really bad, and they are going quite slow. the snowfall today, some areas impressive, but others not so much. reagan international, over two inches and the first time in three years we have done that. and fredrick, impressive with 7 inches of snow, and germantown, and montgomery town, close to four inches. we will see more as we go through the rest of the night tonight. and right now, 25 degrees and

5:21 pm
of montgomery county, and now moving up farther, you will notice that fredrick, this area is the bull's eye all day, and they continue to see some of the heavier snow coming down across the region, and as we move out, we will show you where the storm is, and to the south, and the energy has transferred down the coa coast, and we are starting to see the wind, and continue to see the snow for the next couple of hours, and so not so bad, and we will see it. this is 6:00 and now by 10:00, you will have more inches in that region, and in southern maryland, you will have some accumulation, but now it is starting to get out of the region, and we are starting to talk about the cold, cold air. how much snow? well, we showed you the map yesterday, and right now, a little bit of a change. 2 to 4 instead of the 3 to 4 around fredrickburg and leonardsto leonardstown, and that is what

5:27 pm
they are great. >> reporter: okay. if you think that these are great, wait until you see beards and hat. let's go now to the snowstick challenge. it is the pat collins' snowstick challenge. best snow hat gets the snowstick, and the entries keep flying in. we call this category hats with beards. that is right. hats with beards. apparently some come with a beard accessory, and it is not just for men. is this beard part of the hat or is the hat part of the beard? and what about this guy? can you say floor mop? we have animals wearing people hats, and people wearing animal hats. hat like elephant. hat like bear. hat like moose. hey, where is squirrel? there's squirrel. and hats with the story.
5:28 pm
we love hats with a story. d.j. got his in peru. >> the more stripes that it has, the more important i am. and if half, the entire hat is colored, that means that i am single, and if half of it were white, that means i'm married. >> reporter: and maurice got his hat from hisad on the ski trip a long time ago. >> i have photographic evidence. >> same hat, and my dad and i on top of killington, and you can see the date on there is 12-27-89. >> reporter: now that is a hat with a history. i be et you guys would like one of these, wouldn't you? >> yeah. >> well, okay, it is not too late to en t and take a picture of the best snow hat, and tweet it to@patsnowstick. and take a picture. i will be back at 6:00 with some off of the wall, and out of the box hats. i will see you then. >> and pat, you shaved today, a

on the outer loop around silver spring. you can see that it is looking slick there, and it is good idea to stay off of the roads if you possibly can, but our folks are traveling slowly and carefully, and doug, the roads are only go going to be worse as the night goes on, aren't they? is. >> yes, they are, because the temperatures continue to drop. right now we are sitting at 25 degrees b tow the north at hagerstown is 19, and we will continue to see the numbers coming down as we move through the night, and the snow continues to come down, and you also noticed the different shades here, with the light bright colors and montgomery coun county, and loudoun county, and then down to the south, it is lighter in fredericksburg and southern portions of maryland, and they have not seen a lot of snow in the day, but it is snowing at the airport right now, but reporting light snow. down to the north and the west, at leesburg and ashburg, and clarksburg, and damascus, and mount airy is reporting light
5:34 pm
areas, but some of these areas have 4 to 7 areas of snow and may pick up another couple of inches. we have a few more hours of snow to come, so if you have not seen the accumulation in southern maryland at the fredericksburg area, you have a chance as the upper low makes its way, and the surface low begins to take hold here, and when it does, well, the winds will stay up, and we have them overnight tonight, and we are talking about the dangerous tomorrow morning. and veronica johnson outside, and v.j., the conditions have been deteriorating throughout the afternoon. >> and the temperatures throughout the day have been dropping through the 20ed, and we have three or four inches out here on the storm team weather deck, and when i came out here, it is getting harder and harder to find the weather deck and where it starts and ends, and look looking at the fluffy snow here, folks, it is good snow making snow, and i am dying to take someone and throw them down in
5:35 pm
the snow, and if there are any ta takers, it is fun kind of snow, but no fun to drive on, and that is the issue for the period overnight morning. and look at this weather impacts of the slick roads and a definite especially the secondary roads. you bet, delays and some consolations for tomorrow morning, and dangerous cold, and extreme conditions for tomorrow morning which is why it is so important to make sure that you cover up any exposed skin like last time, and remember the last polar air mass that we had across the area, and the high temperature january 7th was 21 degrees and we started out with the single digits, and the windchills well below that and this could rival that, and the high that we are forecasting tomorrow is just 15 degree, and it is frostbite, and hypothermia-type weather which is why you need to take it very serious. doug? >> all right. thank you, veronica. breaking news now with a news4 crew which came up on the scene of an accident on the beltway. >> yes, on the outer loop in
5:36 pm
montgomery county, and jackie bensen with the reports. >> well, this accident happened when a car went into the back of the pickup truck over tlshhere,d that has got the trailer on the back, and it looks like the trailer fish tailed and nowb taking a look over here, once you have the emergency vehicles and take a look to see what it looks like all along the beltway there and now traffic to a stop. and now what is going to happen is that since those vehicles are not moving, the road is getting colderk and it is not getting the friction, and you can see that it is down to one lane offhere at this point, and the road conditions becoming more and more slippery, and it looks like this situation which is on the beltway between connecticut avenue and georgia is going to take quite some time to get cleaned up, because of the weather conditions. jackie bensen, news4. and don't forget that you can track the winter storm live out on the go. just download the storm team 4

and what are the conditions looking like where you are right now? >> well -- in on the beltway on the inner loop near coalsville roads exit, and we are driving out here, and it is treacherous. you have to slow down and a lot of snow is coming down, and slush in many places, and the temperature is expected to drop which of course could possibly turn that slush into ice. so, a lot of folks are out here, and some folks are making sure that they are careful, and we talked to people at gas stations, and i must say that you have to be careful, because one person cut us off like edward scissorhands, and i told my photographer please to be careful, and the police are recommend i recommending that you slowdown, because it is not worth speeding and hurrying up, and then getting into an accident on the way to your destination. back to you in the studio.
