>> crews are hard at work clearing roads before the sunset. temperatures continue to fall. >> that's right. windchills will dip below zero as soon as the sun goes down. get ready, folks, for ice and lots of it. we have complete storm team coverage for you, veronica and transportation reporter, adam and tracy checking out the details. you are on the weather deck right now. >> reporter: it has been sunny, nice and bright. the sun reflecting back up to my eyes, but it has the net effect of the sun melting. what we will see tonight is a very quick refreeze across the area, flash freeze in fact whatever did get slushy, shortly after 5:00. conditions today, it's been windy, we have snow pack on the ground and polar air over us solidly locked in the deep

freeze. when the wind does drop, our temperatures get a chance to drop more between 10 and 18 miles an hour. you can see it across the area, 9 in frederick maryland and the wind speed delivering windchill values that right now most neighborhoods are just above freezing, from feeling like 6 in minneapolis to 7 in manassas. just below zero in gaithersburg and hagerstown. even though winds are easing up more tonight, i expect windchill values to be just below zero. right now, sunshine across the area. the sun sets at 5:18. as soon as it does, we're talking about icy conditions with a flash freeze. black ice, that thin layer that is very transparent and hard to see. and is on bridges and overpas s overpasses. roads will become very slick. we want to talk about driving slowly. a lot of folks, a little deceived from conditions on area

secondary road and you find it is covered over and iced over. as the temperature drops fit, this is obviously what we have to deal with, what we need to be careful of vdot is telling us after a certain temperature, 19, 20 degrees, the chemicals they put down, they simply don't work and why they need mother nature the sun to help out with some of this. they say every road has had some sort of treatment, whether chemical or salt or sand solution. that's the situation in falls church. let's send it to tracy wilkins in upper marlboro. >> hi, adam. up in upper marlboro we see plenty of roads have been plowed and taken care of. in prince george they are leaving a mixture of sand and salt. roads that have been plowed, you see a salt and slushy mix. this is in a neighborhood and the fact neighborhood streets

now to a developing story that involves the american embassy in tel-aviv, the american em bass say says they foiled a plan to attack the embas embassy. three palestinians have now been arrested in helping in the set yup. the plot involved foreign suicide bombers posing as russian tourists and to attack the israeli conference and american on the same day. the u.s. is still working to independently verify the threat. first at 4, president obama has just wrapped up and event to protect women from sexual assault, especially on college campuses. he's creating a task force that has 90 days to come up with recommendations for colleges to prevent and respond to sexual

there's a new push to make baby car seats even safer, a new push for tougher standards for side impact crash, a test to show how young children would fare in t-bone impacts and only apply to car seats for children up to 40 pounds. they will have three months to comment on the plan and car makers have three years to meet the requirement. they are popular to drive for price and gas mileage. new crash tests now questioning the safety of the world's smallest cars. a highway safety group is warning drivers to stay away from them all together. >> reporter: after testing 11 models of mini cars the insurance institute for highway safety released a report that could have an impact. >> only one of the vehicles

>> our temperatures stay sub-freezing in terms of high temperatures the rest of the week. i want to focus in on the overnight period and every consecutive overnight for the rest of the week and can't stress enough it will be icy, folks and slow down and be cautious on area roads tonight. and looking at the traffic across the woodrow wilson bridge, 5:18. when the sun goes down, we're talking slick conditions out there in terms of conditions and windchill readings, 8 degrees in leesburg. tell that to the folks in germantown and gaithersburg and feels like minus 2. 5 in d.c. and camp springs coming in at minus 1 right now. hourly forecast for 7:00 this evening and 11:00 and 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, icy cold and more ice. temperatures head to the teens about 11:00 p.m. and 5-10 by

tomorrow morning. dress warm. we will continue to see this pattern the next couple of days. we will see a pattern with these clipper systems making their way west to east through the area. each one of different strength and each one offering a little more snow than the other one. right now, we have a chance thursday and saturday, a chance on monday. i think out of all these three that we've got, that little chance coming through of various intensity, i think monday possibly could deliver maybe the most snow. we look at our storm team forecast. 26 degrees on thursday, 25 the high temperature for friday. look at the morning temperature, 10, 11 degrees. the average high, 43, average low, 28. it will be a little higher than that on saturday with a 30% chance of snow. showers that could come through the area. behind that system, we drop to 32 and every time our winds come through, wind picking up as well. right now, 30 degrees.

we are learning more about the suspects in the deadly shooting of a purdue university student in the raid of his home last night. trying to figure out why 25-year-old cody cousins of ohio shot 21-year-old bolt of wisconsin. cousins' landlord describes him as a clean cut organized guy and other students said never talked about having a gun or becoming violent and police believe bolt was specifically targeted. officials say the e-mails against athletes in the u.s. and other countries are fake but there are enough that russia is ramping up security. nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in sochi with the latest. >> reporter: it's important to recognize the security threats in sochi and they are real particularly from terrorists operating in the north caucuses who might not want to miss this opportunity to carry out this kind of attack when so many people are watching sochi and
