into summer. they're digging out. parts of the northeast digging under a foot of snow slowing down air travel a second straight day. >> good evening. i'm jim. >> i'm norene with the sun setting danger on the rise. everything you need to know about the cold conditions. we'll start with doug kammerer and the flash freeze he's talking about. >> numerous accidents on the road and seeing it on my facebook. temperatures in the teens all day long. high temperature, 19 in d.c., sitting at 18 degrees, 12 in gaithersburg and 12 in manassas and 16 in culpeper. we are way below freezing and been below freezing all day. with the sunshine up, sunshine was able to get some melting and we had some water on the roadways. with the sun making its way down setting at 5:18, we are freezing fast.

crews still on the scene where a truck flipped on 301 in bowie. take a look at that. the truck reportedly lost control and drove off 301 at 5:30 and the driver was able to escape on his or her own but those hazardous conditions we've been talking about, the freezing leading to ice and you need to use caution if you're driving. i'm scott macfarlane. while many people are off school and work today, the job of treating the roads is far from over. in prince george's county, plows trying to make it's easier for drivers. tracee wilkins, reports from upper marlboro where ice is the big concern now. >> reporter: it's been a long

day for vanessa. >> my shift started at 8:00 this morning. i completed most of my roadways and almost ready to go to the residential area. >> reporter: there are more than 200 crews working to plow and treat county roads and intersections in prince george's county. most main roads have all been treated. so have state highways and roadways. all the neighborhoods have not been as lucky. >> my neighborhood was a little difficult. the roads were -- like a side street so it wasn't as clear as the main roads. i was able to manage. >> reporter: now time to get ready for the deep freeze that will turn many plowed and treated roads back to ice overnight. when you see a salt truck trying to make it better. >> they need to pay attention and stay off the roadways. they don't listen. just do what they can do. just get out of our way. in northern virginia, some

a different story when we turn to the side streets in the neighborhood. about to make that turn right now on melville lane. you will notice it's already snow covered, continues to be snow covered. a little icy in some parts as well. doug's been mentioning that freeze, flash freeze in particular will have an impact here and snow melted on the sides of the road. that will freeze over already and will start to freeze over at this hour. keeping tabs on some of the areas, worse in the area as far as roads are concerned, i want you to hear about it and tweet m me. >> the storm had a far reaching impact and we'll see how the northeast is getting along after more than a foot in some spots. school districts scrambling as snow days pile up and pat collins with the winner of the snow stick challenge later on this hour. the search tonight is under way for a suspect who shot and

killed a 19-year-old man in southeast d.c. the victim was found on howard road at bowen road at 1:30 this afternoon. he was taken to a hospital nearby and where he was pronounced dead. police believe one person was the shooter and spent the last few hours collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. they do not have a description of the suspect nor have they released the name of the victim yet. new tonight, a local church distancing itself now from two women charged with killing two young children in germantown last week. police say they believed they were performing an exorcize when they killed two of avery's children and injured two others. avery used to be a member of the ministries in gaithersburg. the church released a statement today saying the women were not members of its congregation and does not promote or condone the act of exorcize in any way. former virginia governor bob

mcdonnell will be in court friday and facing charges in a scandal that has rocked the commonwealth. mcdonnell and his wife sought a delay but a federal judge rejected that plea today. virginia chief is here with the possible fallout. >> clearly the biggest political consequence is bob mcdonnell someone once vetted as a possible vice president candidate now may face jail time and the ripple impact could affect other political leaders. >> the indictment of governor bob mcdonnell and his wife, maureen and ethics laws. former congressman tom davis predicts now that charges have been lodged against the governor action will be swift. >> i think the culture will change and the general assembly will change the culture and tighten up the gift laws. >> some wonder if the indictment could have other consequences and could it hurt newly

nightmares. >> i don't think any of us are focusing on this. >> reporter: they're looking at olympic games that brought them to sochi. although authorities say there are specific credible threats aimed at the games, a threatening message sent to the u.s. and other olympic teams has been declared a hoax. for an awful lot of people this last storm has been a disaster. there is a bit of beauty in the chaos. more than 13 inches of snow in philadelphia at the museum of art, the ones rocky ran up. they've been transformed into a perfect hill for sledding if you don't mind a bump or two. on the jersey shore many people braving the cold and snow to get to their favorite hangout spots. in new york city schools were open today after getting about a foot of snow. the decision to open schools got mixed reaction. a lot of students weren't happy

and parents thought it was a good thing because they didn't have to mission a day of work. air traffic problems continue, about 1500 flights canceled across the country, most in boston, new york, philadelphia and about 2,000 others have been delayed. >> when will this let up, doug? >> april. we talked about it in november, inurorecast we could see a very cold january. that's exactly what we are seeing and dealing with snow in our region. something else we're dealing with, dangerous ice. look at these icicles, very big. i saw some near my neighborhood as well. once again, snow falling off over the next couple of days. look at this guy here, that would hurt. watch out if you're making your way out and about. you don't want to get hit by one of those. 18 the current temperature with winds west-northwest, 18 miles an hour.

down in mississippi, there's a fire still burning at a biodiesel plant 12 hours after an explosion there. officials say that fire is so hot firefighters can't get closing enough to put it out and decided to let it burn out. that could take two days, we're told. that blast was felt for two miles and nobody injured and no word what caused the explosion. today marks the 41st anniversary of the landmark roe v. wade supreme court decision on abortion rights. thousands of people across the country descended on the national mall for the annual march for life to the steps of the supreme court. >> we're saving lives. if we can just save the life of one innocent child who had no say in how they were conceived and how it happened, we're doing justice for that child. >> the theme of this year's march adoption. for the first time, organizers used social media to spread

their message. with the stroke of a pen today, president obama created a new task force to help protect students from sexual assault. the initiative on college campuses and saying 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted on a college campus and only 12% have actually reported. they will have 90 days to come up with recommendations to respond to sexual assaults. the presidential reform commsion h a new goal to make sure no american has to wait longer than 30 minutes to vote. long lines plagued the 2012 presidential election. there was serious problems in parts of virginia and elsewhere throughout the country. a panel led by lawyers from the obama and romney campaigns have come up with recommendations to keep that from happening again. those recommendations include investing in better voting equipment and expanding early voting. for the first entitlement si his home

two months ago, virginia state senator creigh deeds is speaking on camera about his son's death and spoke to a reform committee about mental health measures. he attacked him november 19th and then killed himself. it happened just hours after gus was released from psychiatric care because an emergency custody order had expired before a bed could be found for him. creigh deeds wants to extend the time of the emergency. >> i can't fix what happened. what i tried to do, what was my motivation is to make sure situations like that's not likely to occur in the future. >> the subcommittee passed the bill that will next go before the education and health committee. next at 6:30, salt and plows, no match for mother nature. >> 19, 20 degrees almost any chemical we have will not work

expected to do a good job. >> reporter: load up on windshield wiper fluid. you will probably need it tomorrow as well. back in falls church, virginia, it is freezing and where you can't see on the ground and ice, you have to be careful as you drive. another busy night for our road crews. adam tuss, news 4. >> thanks. we have learned the names of two people killed in a crash in prince george's country. 21-year-old allen and 18-year-old darrelle davis both were killed when their car hit a taxi and slammed into a telephone pole. police say allen was driving and they believe speed and the wet road played a role in the crash. that taxi driver was injured but expected to be okay.

woman found dead at a golf course, 49-year-old diana hester, found at the bay hills golf club in arnold this morning. hester lived just a couple of blocks away. no obvious signs of foul play. a medical examiner will determine how she died. the nfl wants to make sure fans lucky enough to get a super bowl ticket show up at the game. the league made 1,000 tickets available at $500 a piece. fantasy wi fans will not get those tickets until after they go through security at the game. the goal is to make sure the $500 tickets aren't resold at much higher prices. the average re-sell value of the average super bowl ticket this year is said to be close to $4,000. >> wow. if you think you're pretty good at picking the winners of the ncaa basketball tournament you should hear this.

chantilly. some drivers tonight are wondering what happens if they can't stop safely at an intersection with slippery roads and some admitted they had to go too far in an intersection rather than hit the brakes on icy roads. montgomery and prince george's police tell us they've officers who look at every ticket one by one. police say it's still the driver's responsibility to slow down so that he or she will be able to stop. today makes two snow days in a row for students in many local school districts. the deep freeze forced montgomery county schools to use lair last budgets snow day for the year today. kids have to head back to class tomorrow on a two hour delay.

clearing sidewalks at its 205 schools getting ready to reopen tomorrow on a two hour delay basis and avoid declaring another snow day. the semester is scheduled to end thursday, june 12th and an additional day that friday and any more would have to carry over to the next week and that could impact family vacation plans. >> i think the more thoughtful they can be about getting kids back to school the better so our summer isn't shortened. >> reporter: maryland requires public schools to be in session 180 days a year. montgomery public school officials tell me extra days may not have to be added to the end of the semester if maryland says the time doesn't have to be made up. in montgomery county, chris gordon, news 4. temperatures drop just as dave said they would. david with the team in chantilly with a look at conditions there.

>> reporter: i've been in touch with loudoun county emergency dispatchers, throughout the day no big issues as far as accidents are concerned however both groups are looking at tonight really concerned about the flash freeze. let me show you some side roads. we are on starters lane in chantilly off route 50. you can see snow covered roads here very icy, finding them slippery, too. very dangerous for some side roads. we've seen the sun very intense today. obviously, it's gone down in the side spots, starting to re-freeze already and we will continue through the night. a lot of you have gone to twitter to tell us bad spots in the area, mentioning manassas and forestdale area and in leesburg, of course, those are the big trouble spots in the points farther west as well where obviously the freeze is continuing and it will be a very
