police moved in but the suspect moved off. the suspect reportedly opened fire on the police. tonight two men are in custody. we are told no officers were hurt in the exchange. jackie benson will have a live report in just a few minutes. we have weather now. winter storm creating challenges for drivers all over the area. a flash freeze turned snow into ice that led to dangerous driving conditions especially on side yods. here is the scene, a car slammed through a subway restaurant at georgia avenue. nobody was hurt. as you can see the damage was extensive. a driver lost control of his truck and ended up in a wooded area off the side of the road. this happened about 5:30 this

evening. the driver was able to get out of there and was not seriously injured. we have team coverage of the storm and the cold. doug is tracking temperatures. >> we begin in ashburn where we learned loudoun county public schools will be closed for the rest of the week. >> reporter: it is so cold out here i removed this foot and a half icicle. it is like a freezer box out here. right down here you can see the ice right here. let me take the metal, chipping away. it is all over the place on the secondary roads. and these school buses are not going anywhere until next monday when schools are expected to reopen. take a drive on dozens of loudoun county side streets and you will see a layer of ice covering the pavement. ray williams tells us it is dangerous. >> it is real slick.

you have to be cautious. side roads are bad. >> reporter: last night snowfall, freezing temperatures, ice, wind. schools are closed tomorrow. mid term exams for middle and high schoolers are cancelled. >> they are real excited. they did the whole snow dance and everything. two kids, 13 and 5. >> reporter: as the sun went down anything that melted today instantly froze. officials are asking people to stay off of slippery roads as much as possible for the rest of the week. >> certainly a challenge today. >> reporter: as for ray williams he is staying indoors. >> the roads are treacherous. i wouldn't go out unless you have to. >> reporter: that is why a lot of folks are going to red boxes and downloading videos and movies because they are staying inside for the next couple of days. it is so cold out here you have ice on the secondary roads and they say they are calling it quits.

i'm shomari stone, news 4. >> because of the problems on the roads lots of schools are closing or delaying tomorrow. let's start with what is closed in virginia. fairfax, cullpepper. loudoun county schools closed tomorrow and friday. alexandria schools, arlington county schools and falls church schools on a two hour delay start. in maryland montgomery, minprin george's on delay. temperatures in the teens. >> we are talking about being in the deep freeze for the next couple of days but probably the next one to two weeks. let's take a look at the numbers. pieces of good news here. look at the a numbers. 10 in baltimore. they were at eight last hour.

we were at 16. the temperatures have come up one or two degrees. it is frigid. wind chills are still near 0 across the region. overnight tonight watch out for the ice. just cold out there. slick roads for sure. lots of ice with temperatures between five and 13 degrees when you wake up tomorrow morning. i expect wind chills to be between 0 and 10 early in the day. coming up later we talk about our snow chances. we don't have one or two but three snow chances to talk about. to the north weather is creating even bigger problems. philadelphia is digging out from more than a foot of snow. the mayor set a goal of getting most secondary roads passable by tonight. he is calling this a marathon effort that probably won't be over until saturday. in new york city people have their own work to do shoveling

from nearly a foot of snow. the city's notorious grid lock was worse. the cleanup has created one expensive problem, a 32 foot tall glass window at apple's flagship store was shattered. >> boston missed the most of the snow. 18 inches fell in some areas in massachusetts. high winds are blowing that snow creating near white out conditions for some of the drivers there. as the system continues to bring frigid air news 4 today will be on early at 4:00 a.m. with the latest on school closings and road conditions. back to the breaking news, a dramatic chase through two states ends in gun fire. detectives say the men held up a liquor store in maryland and took off driving into d.c. with police close behind.

jackie bensen is live from the scene. >> reporter: the police pursuit went on for more than five miles through prince george's county into the district through narrow streets that were getting icy until it ended here. the pursuit ended when a minivan slammed into the pole in northeast washington just before 6 p.m. at least one prince george's county officer pursued the man on foot. at least one gunshot was fired but police spokes woman says investigators are trying to determine who fired the shot that injured the robbery suspect. >> it is not clear at this point whether the suspect was hit by a police officer's weapon or possibly that suspect mistakenly shot himself. he was shot in the groin. >> reporter: the suspect who was

not injured was taken into custody at the scene. police say the armed robbery happened at about 530 p.m. at a liquor store. both suspects have to have an extradition hearing here in the district before they can be taken back to maryland to be charged. live in northeast washington, jackie bensen. police are trying to find whoever it was that shot a 19-year-old kid in southeast d.c. the victim was found this afternoon howard road. he had been shot several times. police believe there was only one shooter and have not identified the victim. a local church is trying to distance itself from two women accused of killing two children in german town. police say they were trying to perform an exorcism when they killed two of avery's children and injured two others.

the church released the statement saying the women were not members of the congigation. formerer virginia governor and his wife will be in court on friday to face federal corruption charges. the indictment accuses the mcdonnell's from accepting lavish gifts from businessman williams in exchange for promoting his company. among the gifts a shopping spree, a $50,000 loan, a weekend to the vacation home and keys to his ferrari and a customized rolex watch for the former governor. 41 years after the landmark roe versus wade decision

a developing story out of texas tonight where fire crews are still on the scene at a huge firet at a condo in dallas. that fire has been burning for five hours. the big concern is what they call flare ups. nearly 100 firefighters were called in. neighbors had to spray down their lawns with water to put out flying embers. officials say the condos were mostly vant. a lucky break for local drivers. hundreds of people will be getting refunds after being ticketed for speeding in prince george's county all because of a big technicality. >> reporter: if you sped by the

saint ignaceous school and got a ticket you might catch a break. according to state law police have to advertise camera locations in the paper. in 2012 police positioned a camera like this along brinkley road. they gave were on their website and tweeted it. when the newspaper ad was drawn up police say the location was left out of the final draft. oops. >> just be cautious because chances are it may come back and the next ticket you get will be for real. >> reporter: what does this mean for your wallet? nearly $60,000 worth of $40 ticketed being refunded. the city has issued nearly 2,000 ticketed. police say as soon as they became aware of the omission the camera was taken down. i am told the camera will foot

the bill for less than $40,000 and the rest will be worked out with the camera's manufacturer on a technicality. residents should be receiving a refund within the next 45 days. icy spots on the roads can make it tough to brake in time for red lights. some drivers are wondering if they can get tickets if they go too far into the intersection. police say it is a driver's responsibility to make sure that they stop. but both jurisdictions say officers look at every individual traffic ticket. they say they will take into account whether there is ice on the road. kids may be enjoying the snow now but may paying for it later. many school districts used up

overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow. and probably the next couple of days because temperatures are not going to rise above freezing until saturday. they don't get theret that long. 17 degrees the current number. the wind chill three at the airport. temperatures in some areas are coming up just a little bit from where they were but still very cold. 14 degrees. the reason they have been coming back up just a bit, cloud cover. clouds do not have snow associated with them. storm team radar all clear. you have to go back to the west to really see it. we want to show you around cincinnati. this is another frontal boundary that will give the mountains a little bit of snow. i think we will see a little snow from it in parts of the area but most of us will not. the clippers staying to our

north. if you want snow the clipper systems have to go to the south. these will go to the north. we are talking about one that will come in during the day tomorrow on our thursday, another on saturday and another on monday. most of them, if not all of them, will have almost no accumulating snow with them. as far as cold air is concerned it is locked in. tomorrow morning cold and slippery. we will continue to see slick roads tomorrow afternoon. here comes the little area of snow. you have a much better chance of seeing snow to the north. it is a five, maybe ten minute snow shower and that snow will move out of here. around 1:00 around the d.c. area. that is going to be about it. clouds will be back and so will the wind. the wind will come back with the next front and will be another cold night tomorrow night and then another very chilly day on friday as wind chills will continue to stay into the teens throughout the day. temperatures tomorrow 26.
