amelia seigel tracking conditions as you step out the door. the first thing you'll notice is the cold. >> absolutely frigid temperatures to start off your thursday. and it will remain very cold once again. in fact, we can't shake this chill until saturday. temperatures right now at 15 in washington. elsewhere, mainly in the single digits. only coming in at one degree in manassas. and we're at five degrees right now in camp springs. the latest satellite and radar image. we're not tracking any precipitation right now. in fact, mainly clear skies across the area. winds are also for the most part relatively calm right now. however, as we get into the afternoon hours, the winds pick up, and there is the chance for some snow. i'll be talking more about that coming up in ten minutes. for now, here's danella with a look at the roads. we're going to start with the rails because they're open. so far no delays. here the heads up. marc says you may experience delays. so far not now. but all are warning about looking out for those icy sidewalks, possibly platforms,

so be careful. wear shoes that will not have you slipping all over the road. and look out for that black ice. now, we're going to head to gw parkway. lanes are open, not seeing any accidents here. to the dulles toll road, 28, greenway toll road, both directions nice and clear. no accidents to report here. and continuing on the beltway between the dulles toll road heading toward the interchange, very light volume. no accidents right now. i'm back in ten minutes. back to you both. >> see you then. thank you. the deep freeze could make for a tough drive this morning. we're on the roads checking to see what impact the frigid temperatures are having. news4's megan mcgrath is in leesburg now. what are you finding now? >> reporter: we are in historic downtown leesburg right now, driving along south king street. take a live look here at the road conditions that we're seeing. you can see we've got some frozen slush here along the side of the road. down the center of the road, though, looking good. that white that you see actually is not snow. it appears to be the -- the salt and some of the chemicals that

they've put down when the storm was going to keep the roads clear. that's good. that's going to help keep the things from freezing up. but not much you can do along the side where all of the slush and snow accumulated as the plows went through. all of that is now frozen rock solid. so we do have very slippery conditions. the side streets, the smaller roads, that's why loudoun county has canceled school, not just for today but for the rest of the week. we've got a lot of really slippery conditions in the neighborhoods. i want to make sure -- they want to make sure that everybody is safe. if you're heading to work, keep in mind that you're going to need to give yourself a little bit more of a lead time when you're braking at a stoplight or stop sign. might take you longer to stop because of the conditions on the roadways. reporting live in leesburg, megan mcgrath, news4. back to you. >> thank you. 5:03. if you're traveling today, you shouldn't have any problems catching a flight once you get to the airport. looking live at reagan national now. we are not seeing any delays out

of this airport or dulles or bwi. just a handful of cancelations to places in the northeast. but nothing like the thousands of cancelations we've seen in the past two dis. you can keep track of the delays and deep freeze with our "news4 today" app including school closings, delays, along with traffic and weather alert. download it from the apple app store. 5:04. one person is in the hospital after leading police on a dramatic chase, crash, and shooting. this started in forestville before 6:00 last night. prince george's county police were responding to an armed robbery at a looker store along walters lane. they say the suspects led them on a five-mile chase to 57 and clay streets. that's where the police say the suspect's minivan crashed into a pole, and they took off on foot. at least one gunshot was fired injuring one of the suspects. it is not clear if the officer or another suspect fired that shot. two people were arrested. one is in the hospital. the officer involved in the shooting is on routine

administrative leave pending an internal investigation. today virginia will become the latest state to fight bans on same-sex marriage. new attorney general mark herring will ask the federal daughter strike down the commonwealth's ban on gay marriage. voters passed a constitutional amendment endorsing the ban in 2006. herring voted against same-sex marriage eight years ago as a state senator. the democrat says his views have changed. and today, we will have a crew in annapolis for maryland governor o'malley's final state of the state address. the governor's office says o'malley will highlight his achievements over the past seven years. he's also expected to focus heavily on his proposal to raise the minimum wage across the state. o'malley already introduced a measure that would hike the wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.ten an hour by 2016. our deep freeze and lingering snow is still impacting travelers this morning. the problems people at union station will be dealing with all day. also ahead, the icy conditions could have your car sliding into an intersection this morning. what if it's one with a red

we wake up in a deep freeze around the area. looking live outside at our storm team 4 weather deck here in northwest washington. we are seeing single digit temperatures. looks like about ten right now. there is not much wind, but the little we have is making things feel colder. it's the windchill making it single digit. have you been caught -- single digits. have you been caught running a red light because you skidded on ice? you're not alone. police in prince george's county and montgomery counties were asked if you will be held responsible for tickets. they say it is a diver's responsibility to stop at a red light. a real police officer does review every picture taken. if they see the conditions were beyond the driver's control, you will not be ticketed. all right. so a little bit of a break. >> slow down. >> slow down. >> a lot of people still flying. even if it looks clear on the ground, these days you have to think about maybe there's ice there. >> today especially because temperatures are cold, nothing's melting now. >> storm team 4 meteorologist amelia siegel is here with the

forecast. you're exactly right. the high yesterday only 19 degrees. today it will be warmer, but still we're going to remain below freezing. a high of 26 today in adams-morgan in bethesda. 24 for the high in germantown and manassas. any sunshine this morning will give way to cloudy skies this afternoon. and maybe some light snow or flurries from midday, around the noontime hour until 4:00 p.m. we'll be scattered and light in nature. little or no accumulation. however, everybody will notice more breezy conditions this afternoon. so this is how it will feel at 2:30. it will feel like temperatures are in the teens. 16 in manassas. 12 in gaithersburg. 11 in frederick. as we get into the evening and overnight hours, we're once again looking at windchills below zero. tomorrow morning, it will feel about one below in washington, hopefully you'll is better news with the traffic this morning. >> i do. so far, still pretty clear in our area. so for folks traveling bw parkway between the baltimore 2000 and -- baltimore beltway

teens, even single digits. you add the windchills, and it's downright miserable outside. that's not going to make things any easier on the roads either where melted snow has now refrozen, and that will make for an icy commute for some. slick roads aren't the only issues. if you're traveling by rail this morning, you might want to rethink that. more than a dozen amtrak trains on the keystone line which services much of the northeast have been canceled for the day. richard jordan live at union station now where commuters are already facing the freeze on the train lines. richard? >> reporter: aaron, this is going to have a big impact on anyone traveling by train from union station to boston or over to new york. it hasn't really had much effect yet. just a few people in the terminal now. things will get worse as the day wears on. there was a 5:00 train, an acela express to boston. it was supposed to take off about 15 minutes ago. that never happened because the train was canceled. the next two trains to new york, the 6:00 a.m. and 6:30, also

canceled. and because of these cancelations, you're getting to the point here several cancelations to boston and new york. because of that, many passengers have had to rebook. that means the trains that are operating to these cities are very crowded if they're not sold out. a lot of them are already sold out. now amtrak knew they were going do this because of the weather yesterday. they sent out an alert to passengers, many of them were able to rebook. but for those that did not want to face the congestion on the train, those that did not want to travel today, they are offering refunds and vouchers. so so far right now, not too many people waiting in the terminal. again, a lot of them did have that early notice that there were going to be several cancelations today. if you are traveling by train on amtrak from union station to boston or new york, that's the keystone route or the northeast regional and acela express routes, you'll want to check ahead. make sure your train is still scheduled to take off. and then of course if it's not, you can do your best to rebook. amtrak saying it's going to work with passengers to make this an

easier day than it might otherwise be. reporting live in union station, richard jordan, news4. 5:16. new this morning, investigator trying to figure out what caused a train to shut down in connecticut stranding passengers in the bitter cold. the train was traveling from grand central station in manhattan to new haven, connecticut, when it lost power around 9:00 last night. that left the 200 on board stuck just outside a station near fairfield, connecticut. a rescue train wasn't able to get to the passengers until almost 11:00. also new this morning, new york city's new mayor facing criticism for how the city handled the winter storm. you are looking live at 30 rock right now. the controversy centers around nearby upper east side. you might remember this video. we showed it to you yesterday. take a look. it's a traffic jam that happened as the storm rolled in tuesday night. the city says because the storm hit during the evening rush, trucks were not able to salt and plow very well. that led to even more problems with a lot of cars spinning out. residents say brooklyn where

mayor bill deblasio is from was cleared before several other neighborhood. deblasio said every borough was treated equally. he admits more could have been done. we have every angle of the winter storm and its aftermath covered. you can find the latest at nbcwashington.com any time. dallas firefighters are recovering this morning after fighting a massive condo fire. you can see the flames pouring out of the building. nearly 100 firefighters were on hand to battle the flames at the vacant condo for more than five hours. neighbors sprayed down their lawns with water to put out the flying embers and stop the fire from spreading. one firefighter suffered minor burns but will be okay. fire crews are still fighting the flames at a mississippi biodiesel plant as dozens have been evacuated from their homes in the surrounding area. this was the scene yesterday when a massive fireball filled the sky about three hours north of jackson, mississippi. the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

currently the red cross has set up temporary shelters, and the national guard is monitoring the air quality to see when the area is safe again. in about three hours, several major roadways will be closed in prince george's county as a funeral procession is scheduled for a volunteer firefighter who died on duty. james "doc" brooks was a 20-year veteran of the prince george's county fire department. he suffered a medical emergency while on duty a little over a week ago. he was winterizing the boats and station ahead of the cold weather. his procession will start at 8:30 on alexandria ferry road and move through the area. driving past several locations like the fire and ems station and the marina. this could impact your commute with portions of allentown road and crane highway closed off. it is now 5:19. news4's molette green is following breaking news from the live desk. molette? we just found out about a deadly bus crash in turkey where icy roads may to be blame. working to get video from the scene. at least 21 people are dead after their bus tipped over

after sliding on the slick roads in the central section of the country. some of the passengers died when they jumped out of the bus' windows. that's latest from the live desk, back to you. >> thank you. 5:20. new, egyptian security officials say masked gunmen riding on motorcycles killed five police officers outside cairo. two other officers were wounded. egypt has seen a sharp rise in drive-by shootings and attacks that target police and military since islamist president morsi was ousted in july. at least 250 security personnel have been killed amid attacks since then. a u.n. negotiator will try to keep syrian peace talks going this morning by meeting with both sides separately. face-to-face negotiations between the syrian government and opposition forces were supposed to begin in switzerland tomorrow. but already a disagreement is threatening to derail talks. the u.s. and syria's western-backed opposition want president bashar al assad to be removed from power. the government says that's not an option. tonight the negotiator hopes to

firefighters had to bring out a 3,000-foot fire hose it try to get water on -- hose to try to get water on the fire. the family and their dog made it out okay, though. that is the latest from the live desk. back to you. and of course you can track the impact of this winter storm and the deep freeze on line any time. just head over to nbcwashington.com. 5:48. right now police are searching for the person who shot and killed a 19-year-old in southeast washington. the victim was found yesterday afternoon on howard road near bowen road. he washot multiple times. police believe there was just one gunman. officers have not identified the victim. a gaithersburg church has said two women claiming to be members are not part of its congregation. the two were recently arrested for the murders of avery's two youngest children and the attempted murder of her two oldest. officers say the women were attempting to perform an exorcism on the children. the women claim to be members of the asutia ministries in gaithersburg. hathe the winner said it wasn't
