numbers on your screen show just how cold it feels outside now. many of your windchills are sitting in the single digits. we start this morning, though, by telling you the federal government and d.c. public schools will open on time today. >> thousands of other kids in the area, though, have the day off or can sleep in a little this morning. in maryland, prince george's, montgomery, howard, charles, and frederick county schools will open two hours late. so will anne arundel and washington county schools. calvert and st. mary's county schools are closed. >> in virginia, fairfax, loudoun, prince william county schools are closed. schools in arlington county and alexandria will open two hours late. falls church city schools will also open two hours late. schools in manassas, stafford, spotsylvania, and culpeper counties are closed. >> in virginia, clarke, fauquier, frederick, king george, warren county schools are closed. the same guess for schools in winchester, fredericksburg, and shenandoah county. >> finally in west virginia, berkeley, hampshire, jefferson and morgan county schools are closed. hardy county schools will open

two hours late. if you missed one or didn't see your school listed, a complete list at the bottom of the screen and at nbcwashington.com. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia siegel is watching the windchills to see how cold it will feel today. good morning. good morning. temperatures will be higher than yesterday, high of 26. the winds increase this afternoon. when you factor in the winds, it will feel this afternoon like temperatures are in the teens. what you need to watch out for this morning, not just the cold, but the potential for some areas of ice. yesterday with the sunshine, we did see melting. that quickly refroze overnight. so it could be slick in spots this morning, especially on the secondary roads and sidewalks. temperatures right now in the single digits and teens. it's zero at dulles and manassas. only two degrees in camp springs. 13 degrees right now in washington. the current wind speeds, they're not an issue now. they're calm winds or up to about six miles an hour. like i said, the winds increase

this afternoon. and along with that comes the chance of light snow. i'll be talking about the timing coming up in ten minutes. danella, how are the roads? >> still checking an accident. this is in west springfield. so far it is off to the shoulder lane. but here's a heads up. this is southbound rolling road at old keene mill road. you'll see an accidentnisming three vehicles. one of those vehicle a dump truck. southbound shoulder lane blocked. you may see police blocking possibly one of your other southbound lanes. let's head to i-270 southbound. this is at 109. an accident off to the right side of the roadway. still seeing delays. that crash is clear because i did see it on camera. but just delays as you make your way southbound. so heads up i-270 in this area. now, metro still seeing delays on the yellow line because of an earlier signal problem at king street. traveling on the marc, they're dealing with a frozen switch. already 33 minutes, that's the delay on brunswick train 890.

>> thank you. 6:02. we're on the roads with you so you know how deep freeze will impact your commute. news4's megan mcgrath has made her way back to leesburg to check on conditions. megan? >> reporter: we are in the potomac station neighborhood in leesburg. and we are seeing some pretty lousy conditions here. we're on silverwood terrace. take a look at our live camera. you see for yourself, absolutely snow packed. really, really slick. all of the stuff here is frozen. we even have a little ice on the side and in spots. we're really not on this street seeing any of the pavement really showing through at all. it is completely white. so it looks like they need some serious plow action going through here. maybe some chemical. but this is the challenge here. this is why loudoun county schools are closed. not just today but also tomorrow. these neighborhood streets, this is all frozen. so it's very, very difficult to get up at this point. and we've got really, really cold temperatures. we need it to melt in order to

make a difference here. a little too slippery, treacherous for school buses and people walking. we've seen some sidewalks that have been shoveled. others have not. so just a tough go out here. and this is what we've been seeing in a lot of neighborhoods all around the area, leesburg, ashburn, lucketz. the main roads, though, i should say, are looking pretty good. the neighborhoods are tough. back to you. >> thank you. 6:04. heads up for parent and students in spotsylvania county. molette? >> all of the snow days off school have caused confusion. this just in to the newsroom. spotsylvania county school officials sent out an e-mail to parents trying to clear up some false information being posted on social media about school exams. we've learned that there was a message saying division exams for high school and middle school students were canceled. in bold print, school leaders wrote in bold as i said that this message is simply not true. they want parent to be very careful. check the school's website for

updates. even the division web page for the latest information. they're still trying to figure it out. that is the latest from the live desk, back to you. >> thank you. for the first time this week, you shouldn't have a problem getting a flight out of town. hoarse a live look at reagan national. we just took a look at flightaware.com. there are no delays listed at our three airports. there are just a handful of cancelations, however. so you still may want to call ahead before you head to the airport. and some good news for travelers extends to most of the country. there are just 68 cancelations nationwide r that's a huge improvement considering nearly 5,500 flights were cancelled in the first half of the week. the biggest delays this morning in new york, boston, and parts of canada. make sure you are ready for this deep freeze with our nbc washington app. you will get the latest breaking news and weather alerts around 9:00. plus, "news4 today" streaming right on your phone. a dramatic police chase ends in a shooting in northeast washington. this started in forestville just before 6:00 last night.

prince george's county police were responding to an armed robbery at a liquor store along walters lane. they say the suspects led them on a five-mile dhies 57th and clay streets. that's where they say the suspect's minivan crashed into a pole, and they took off on foot. at least one gunshot was fired injuring one of the suspects. it is not clear if the officer or another suspect fired the shot. two people were arrested. one of them is in the hospital. the officer involved in the shooting is on routine administrative leave pending an internal investigation. today our northern virginia bureau chief, juke, will talk to virginia attorney general mark herring it his decision to -- herring about his decision to racetrack dawn gay marriage. voters -- down gay marriage. herring voted again same-sex marriage eight years ago as a state senator. the democrat says his views have changed. coming up on 6:07.

the deep freeze. this is 30 rock in new york. the temperature will be around ten degrees today. it will foal more like negative two. you know, the windchills -- >> yeah. that's always the problem. fortunately for us, today won't be just quite as bad windchill-wise as it was yesterday, right? >> yeah. you're exactly right. yesterday was a record cold day across the area. only 19 degrees. today a high of 26 degrees. it will become breezy this afternoon. so this afternoon, we're dealing with windchills generally in the teens. right now, we're at zero in manassas. three in gaithersburg. four in huntingtown. washington coming in at 13 degrees. any sunshine this morning will give way to mostly cloudy skies getting into the afternoon hours. and there could be some light snow or flurries between about noon and 4:00 p.m. with little or no accumulation. this is how the windchill temperature will be this afternoon or how it will feel outside, about 16 in washington. better chae of snow on saturday, danella. i'll be talking about that in

ten minutes. >> thanks. here's what i'm tracking on metro. now metro dealing with a broken rail and single tracking. this between braddock road and national airport. so heads up on the blue and yellow line. delays will last throughout the morning. and you can expect your delays to be between 20 and 25 minutes. heads up here. now, over to the roadway. still clear around the beltway. still keeping may eye on the situation. on -- keeping my eye on the situation at rolling road and old keen mill. crash on the shoulder lane. back with a live look from chopper 4. >> thank you. icy spots on the roads can make it difficult to drive and even stop in time for red lights. prince george's county police and montgomery county police want to assure drivers that if a camera snaps a picture of you sliding through a light, that does not automatically mean you'll get a ticket. officers sit down and look at every individual traffic ticket. and they take into account whether the -- there is ice on the roads preventing you from making a complete stop. they also say it's ultimately your responsibility to drive

slower. a train in connecticut lost power on its route. the long wait in the cold weather, all the people on board had to go through. plus, pet treats linked to several deaths going back on shelves. the change the company says it made to make sure your dog does not get sick.

welcome back. it's about ten degrees at northwest washington. we've been watching the thermometer all morning. it feels colder than this this morning. the windchill sitting around four degrees now. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia siegel looking ahead to a chance for snow. we'll check in with her in a couple of minutes. more frigid weather is sweeping across the u.s. as people are bracing for the deep freeze. look at what naj is facing this morning. people are digging themselves out of a foot of snow that was dumped over the last 48 hours. temperatures across most of the country are sitting at or well below the freezing mark which is making travel harder than usual. the same cold weather blasting new york and new jersey is shutting down several amtrak train runs today. amtrak already announced it would be running on a modified schedule all day with several trains including many of the acela runs canceled. news4's richard jordan is live at union station with details.

richard, what are you seeing now? >> reporter: it's going to be tough to get to new york or boston on amtrak today. if you are taking off from union station, there are several routes that are canceled. we're talking about the keystone route, northeast regional, and assessa express trains -- and acela express trains. not all are canceled, but a majority are. what's happening is that the trains that are running are jam-packed. many are sold out because there have been so many cancelations. passengers have had to rebook. all this because of the freezing temperatures. now there is an asell access press going to new york -- acela express going to new york. leaves at 7:00 a.m. the 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. are canceled. you can imagine what's going to happen the rest of the day. pretty much no empty seats on these trains. we've only noticed that about three trains leaving this morning to new york still have seats available. that probably won't last long. so if you are going to be heading to the northeast, may be better to wait for you to get one of the afternoon trains. now amtrak is working with

passengers. they've been able to rebook most of those passengers. they're also offering vouchers and refunds to passengers who don't want to travel today. inside the terminal at union station, not so many people are waiting, but there is a big amtrak staff there at the ticket counter trying to help people out. reporting live from union station, richard jordan, news4. >> thank you. some commuters in connecticut were forced to experience the deep freeze for a long time on their ride home. a train was traveling from grand central station in manhattan to new haven, connecticut -- a rescue train wasn't able to get to the passengers until almost 11:00. temperatures at the time were in the single digits with the windchill well below zero. news4's molette green following breaking news from the live desk at 6:18. >> thank you very much. we have just confirmed from montgomery county police they are dealing with a murder this morning. the murder of a 7-eleven store

employee. that employee we just learned a few minutes ago has now died. police got a 911 call to go to this 7-eleven store in the 9000 block of snouffer school road in gaithersburg yesterday after something happened at the store. they do have an adult male in custody at this time. but again, we just learned moments ago that that 7-eleven store employee who was stabbed yesterday has now died. back to you. >> all right. thank you. 6:1. today the man convicted of murder in the death of redskins star sean taylor will find out how long he'll number prison. a judge scheduled to sentence 23-year-old eric rivera jr. in miami today. rivera was convicted of second-degree murder in november. he told police that he and some other men broke into the nfl player's home to steal cash. they shot taylor when he confronted them with a machete. rivera says someone else fired the fatal shot. he faces up to listen in prison. in the day ahead, the purdue

university student accused of shooting and killing a fellow student will make his first court appearance. 23-year-old engineering student cody cousins was arrested tuesday after turning himself in following that shooting that killed 21-year-old andrew bolt. police have not yet released a motive for the shooting. however, campus officials were quick to point out this was an isolated incident, not an attempted mass shooting. george zimmerman is hoping to cash in on another painting. he is trying to sell a painting today of trial prosecutor los angeles corey. he posted this picture of the painting on twitter yesterday. it is called "angie." angela corey was one of the prosecutors in his murder trial over the shooting of teenager trayvon martin. zimmerman was acquitted back in july. this isn't his first painting. he already sold this one for more than $100,000 back in december. you might remember this video we showed you yesterday. well, now it's causing some controversy in new york city for the new mayor, bill deblasio. traffic jams on the upper east side happened as the storm rolled in tuesday night.

the city says because the storm hit during the evening rush, trucks weren't able to salt and plow very well. that led to more problems with cars spinning out. neighbors in brooklyn say, though, where bill deblasio lives was cleared before several other neighborhoods. deblasio says every borough of treated equally and admits that more could have been done. here most of the main streets have been cleared. some of the side streets a little dicey. >> amelia siegel will tell us how cold it will be throughout the day. >> we're only going to warm to a high today of 26 degrees. in fact, we will remain below 32 until the afternoon hours on saturday. so as far as melting is concerned, widespread melting, we're not looking at any great chances until we hit the weekend. it is a frigid start for your thursday morning. two degrees right now in camp springs. we're coming in at 13 in washington. 9 in reston. 3 in leesburg. we will see most three partly sunny skies this morning. but clouds will increase around the midday and afternoon hours. as the clouds increase, the

winds pick up. breezy later today. in addition to that, there could be some light snow and flurries from noon until about 4:00 p.m. there's your high temperature of 26 degrees. when you factor in the breezy winds, it will feel more like 16 this afternoon. once again, i would recommend the warmest jacket you have. for tonight, we become cold once again. low temperatures tomorrow morning in washington will be around 11 degrees. those of you in the suburbs are looking at low temperatures in the single digits. at least tomorrow, though, we will have plenty of sunshine. it will be a mostly sunny day. temperatures, though, still run being 20 degrees below average. saturday is breezy. high of 36 degrees. however, there is the chance of some snow throughout the day on saturday. if the snow does happen, we're looking at minor accumulations. right now, i'm estimating about an inch or less of snow. we'll ton track the potential right now -- we'll continue to track the potential right now. only a 30% chance of snow saturday.

we're right at freezing for sunday and monday. and then this arctic air returns next tuesday and wednesday. how are the roads right now? well, still tracking delays on the rails. here's what's happening on the blue and yellow line. you can expect these delays to be between 20 and 25 minutes throughout your morning commute. that's because of a broken track problem. this is here at braddock road and causing single tracking in both directions. over to the roadways, around the beltway, not seeing any accidents. still we'll head down, this time in virginia, south potomac mills road at opitz boulevard. crash involving a bus blocking all lanes. heads up there. we're going to head back up to west springfield. southbound rolling road at old keene mill road. that earlier crash is cleared. we'll head to i-95 where we'll find the live look from chopper 4. this is northbound toward the franconia springfield parkway. volume is increasing. delay -- a little bit delayed but not terrible. back to you. >> thank you. 6:23. this morning, nearly 100 dallas

firefighters are breathing a sigh of relief after containing this massive five-alarm fire. look at this -- crews worked through the night trying to put out flames as they tore through a vacant condo building. neighbors sprayed down their lawns with water to try to put out flying embers. one firefighter did suffer minor burn. he will be fine. investigators looking into what sparked the fire. this morning, israel says it stopped an al qaeda plot to blow up a u.s. embassy in tel aviv. the country's intelligence agency says terrorists wanted to carry out a suicide bombing. the embassy would have been one of self locations targeted in an orchestrated attack. israel says three palestinians are now in custody, and analysts say this marks the first time al qaeda's leadership was behind a terrorist plot inside israel. 6:24. heads up for dog owners. two popular brands of treats were recalled last summer and will be back on the market next month. the fda pulled wagon train and milo's kitchen home store treats after hundreds of dogs died. nestle purina says they have

made significant enhancements to the wagon train production process. that includes testing each batch of treats for a range of contaminants like salmonella. government experts say they're no closer to figuring out why the dogs became sick. more trouble for target as it fights to regain the trust of its customers after a massive credit card breach. now it's laying off 475 of its employees. target corporation say the layoffs have information to do with the recent breach. the store says it struggled over the last few months like many businesses. target also pulled another 700 already vacant jobs that were listed over the last six months. "consumer reports" magazine pulling its recommended status for one of its favorite cars. the honda fit. this comes after the fit and the fiat 500 did the worst on the insurance instituted for highway safety's mini car crash test. in a statement honda said it expects the 2015 fitted will earn a good -- fit will earn a good rating on all tests including the small overlap front crash test.

the 2015 fit goes on sale in the u.s. later this year. netflix is testing new price plans for streaming video as it tries to lure more viewers away from the competition. that's if new streaming features being rolled out now get widespread aapproval. the packas would cost $12 a month and would allow four different shows or movies to stream at one time inside one household household. netflix would then lower prices from $7.99 to $6. for customers only looking to stream one video at a time. not all customers will be offered the test priesing. this morning, expect snow and ice on the roads. news4 is making the morning drive with you to show you what you'll have to deal with before you leave. here's a live look. and a good reason to be careful -- the freeze-related wreck that sent a car crashing into a montgomery county subway shop. plus, a report on nsa surveillance months in the making. it will be released today. we can tell you now about specific changes the president will be asked to make. area.

time is 6:40. get ready when you step outside, extreme cold temperatures. this is the -- this is the thermometer on our storm team 4 weather deck. shows temperatures hovering in the teens. if you're lucky -- look like we're inching up to 11 degrees, maybe a little bit. >> how about this for an upside -- while the freezing eratures they may be helping you lose weight. according to dutch researchers, spending time in colder climates helps you burn more lories. when your body is cold, it works harder to warm up. the harder it works the more calories you burn. to help with weight loss, researchers say turn the therm sto stat to 62 degrees -- thermostat to 62 degrees for two hours. doing jumping jacks may help you warm up. although compared to 11, it may feel like summer now. that both are adult men.

conditions in sterling. >> reporter: yeah, we've moved on to sterling, and actually this area is in better shape than some of the other cities we've visited. we are minor road getting ready it turn on countryside. look at live camera. not bad. they've done a pretty good job of getting the snow off the pavement here. really -- seeing slick spots here and there, but by and large pretty good. other areas like leesburg, look at the video we shot earlier. this is from potomac station. that neighborhood there. and we were seeing some pretty snow-packed streets. all of the snow that was on the roadway frozen at this point because of the very cold temperatures. we've also encountered a number of schools that had similar conditions. snow-packed address and parking lot. that's why loudoun county has actually canceled school for today through the rest of the week. back to you in the studio. >> all right. out-the-door forecast with amelia. high today of 26 degrees. the chance of some light snow from noon until about 4:00 p.m. little or no accumulation.
