welcome to "news4 this week." >> hi, everyone. i'm veronica johnson. we are going to show you some of the more interesting local stories making news this week. alarming incidents caught on camera. the warning metro has for anyone that decides to catch the train after a night of drinking. plus this. >> you eat this kind of food, your hunger mechanism turns off. >> that's right. some direction on your diet. we will get expert tips on which eating plans work and which ones could be recipes for disaster. she's ready for her close-up. we get a look at the zoo's baby panda in her new home ahead of her debut in front of visitors.

we start with a story you saw first here on news4. powerful images from surveillance cameras inside of metro stations. a series of incidents unearthed by scott mcfarland show passengers believed to be under the influence of alcohol. there have been at least five incidents since early october. actually, move. four of them caught on camera. metro says that what you are about to see is evidence that you can be too drunk to ride the train. >> the incidents happened so suddenly. watch the escalator on the right of your screen. mcpherson metro station on a friday night. metro said the passenger is recovering. archive station green line, 2:30 in the morning three weeks ago. watch the man going up the left capacity lator. he leans on the railing and topples over. 2:00 a.m., orange line. a fuj fall. watch the passenger on white on the escalator.

leans on the rail and falls over. the rest of the passengers rush to the wall to check on it. >> if you are unable to walk properly or to maintain balance, that is a serious hazard. >> the stadium armory station early on a recent saturday. this passenger stumbled since she starts towards the track. moments later, she collapses on to it. some good samaritans help her back up within a minute. we shared our video with joseph kitchen. >> wow. >> a longtime metro rider and former member of the systems riders advisory council. kitchen tells us he has seen intoxicated passengers that pose a threat to others in the station. >> i have seen on metro where fights where someone was too drunk and not able to control themselves and somebody that's tired of their outrageous behavior. >> metro says the victims are recovering and that alcohol was a factor in each case. >> metro has station managers on duty in every station whenever

trains are running. that helps ensure ambulances are quickly called whenever someone does get hurt. metro is also showing tv new cars that's supposed to provide safer commutes. these are the 7,000 series cars that will replace the oldest ones in the sis em. the new cars are better to handle in impact improvements at the ntsb recommended after the accident in 2009 that killed nine people. metro will spend month testing the new cars before they actually start carrying passengers. we have been dealing with extremely cold weather. you know what, that can't stop babies from being born. one mother found that out the hard way. news4's christian wright has that story and more on the recent chaos caused by the cold. >> in vienna, a beautiful baby girl was born. a healthy 6 pound and 8 ounces. she came in the cold of the morning at the intersection of nutley street and virginia center in a car. listen to the frantic 911 call.

>> contractions. yeah, yeah. water broke. it is so cold out here. yeah. to do this with the door sop not good. >> in fairfax he rode five miles from home to work at the fairfax county government center. >> not that bad. really, really cold the first mile. after i get going, i'm hot and sweaty right now under my coat. >> his seat got cold and he kept on pedaling. it won't start. the cold froze the fuel lines. that means no new heating system at crunch fitness center in tysons corner right now. the heat still works. not well. so they ran out and ball a stack of space heaters to keep everybody warm until we thaw out. >> the fuel line froze. i think, as i mentioned before, we have a heater. we are helping out with this and the fuel line to try to warm it up. >> and at the reston town center, they are shopping and ice skating. the cold, not an issue. >> actually i grew up in

florida. i'm enjoying this a lot. it is a little bit different. nice change of scenery. >> it is extremely cold. >> too cold. >> my eyes are watering. >> in northern virginia, kristin wright, news4. >> we are not going to see that extreme cold for a while. we warm up a little bit and we will be turning colder again by the second, third week of january. someone sells getting her first taste of the elements. the national zoo's giant panda cub. news4's megan mcgrath was there it is a baby panda was put in its display for the first time in front of the cameras. >> reporter: the clicking of camera shutters. bao bao, the giant baby panda, was introduced to the press. but the national zoo's biggest celebrity seemed unfazed by all the attention. >> a ball of cuteness she is right now. >> reporter: at times a little wobbly on her feet but anxious to explore. >> she has gone from crawling to walking and she is so playful.

she is so energetic. she is a great little girl. >> she spends about 20 hours or more asleep. that's typical for a panda cub. she is spending her early energy what she gets from food and getting bigger sxroyp she is bigger. once the size of a stick of butter, bao bao weighs almost 17 pounds. >> she's great. she is really healthy. when she was first born she was as long as round. we always think of her as our little girl. she continues to do really well. >> really magical time to be here in the giant panda house and to watch her grow and to spend every day, seeing her and realizing not just our time with bao bao but they are an endan r endangered species. just that we created another one in the world and we get to share it with everyone else and get to learn from her is spectacular. >> reporter: from the national zoo, megan mcgrath, news4. my vote for the cutest cub we ever had on display there, my

in news4 your health, new evidence that people drink too much. a report by centers for disease control found at least 38 million americans have problems with alcohol. that includes the so-called casual drinkers. the cdc defines heavy alcohol use as two or more drinks a day for men and one or more a day for women. the cdc says while doctors screen patients for other health issues, few discuss alcohol. >> a small conversation can make a big difference and help people reduce their alcohol use. those conversations aren't happening. >> the cdc is calling on both doctors and patients to start having those conversations. if you are no trying to drink less in the new year, chances are you are probably trying on get healthier by eating better. doreen gentzler has a look at the four most popular diets to find out what works and what

might leave you hungry for better results. >> liquid diet, rice diet. >> low carb, green tie it diet. >> i tried the paleo diet. interest didn't work. i was a vegan for three days. it did not work. >> it is a new we are and if you are looking for a new you, then going on a diet might be on the top of your list. >> the first of the year is an opportunity for change. they are sick of how they look. >> registered dietician judy says most die receipts not sustainable. it is tough to keep them going for long periods of time but all is not lost. a diet can kick start weight loss and there's something to be learned from a lot of popular eating plans. take the paleo diet. >> the theory behind this die set we should be eating like a pre-agricultural hunter-gathering ancestor. >> that means cutting out that's farm, dairy, legumes, eggs. think grass-fed meat, seeds,

only do that four or five days a week. the other days you cut your calories significantly. eating about 500 calories a day for women, 600 for men. it is called intermittent fasting. also known as the four-three or five-would diet. >> what i don't like about this diet, it is not changing your habits. the good thing is it is increasing awareness. >> popular cleansing diets, including juice fasts and the master cleanse, obviously aren't sustainable for long periods of time. but as you can see, it is full of healthy fruits and strej tabls. a good thing, whether you are trying to lose weight or not. >> the real issue is what are you going to do when the die set over. that's a much longer length of time. >> doreen gentzler, news4. >> i'm on a little bit diet. a little bit of this and a little bit of that. these guys are on a music diet. you can judge these local band members and they may judge you

by day, they are superior court judges. but at night they trade in their ga i wills for guitars and play the local night clubs. we have the story of the unlikely band. >> people put judges on a pedestal and removed from the real world. >> by day their role is hearing cases from child custody to murder. they have a collective 100 years on the bench but for the past eight years, when the courthouse doors close, these judges have been trading in their robes and gavels for guitars. >> it is a combination of doing community service and just the joys of music as judges they are restricted as to earning outside

income. so they don't make any money from the shows. and they can't even perform at charity events. >> it is too bad. we get invites for all sorts of worthy causes. but we just don't do that. >> they play concerts like this one at the bethesda blues and jazz club where they pack the house. they didn't make a dime. they say that's just pine with them. they do it for fun. it is a way to reach out to the community. oftentimes playing porch more deserving audience than those at a local bar. >> well, you know, we played at the children's hospital and st. elizabeth's hospital. we played for the returning of iraq and afghanistan vets. >> audience members seeing a different side of judges is good for the judicial system. >> to know that these people are actually really are human beings, you know. it is great to see that. it is a nice feeling they have a connection in the community and with law enforcement and with anyone else that comes out to hear them play. >> people i deal with during the day are much more well behaved
