struggle to understand what led a 19-year-old to open fire and kill two men. the two were shot on saturday on the mall's second level. police say 19-year-old shooter darion aguilar turned the gun on himself. police released this photo with details about the teenager. david culvert spoke to the gunman's neighbors and joins us in the studio with more. >> we're back from the home where he lived with his mother. it's there where police seized computers and documents. among that evidence his journal. some of the entries depict a depressed teenager. detectives spent much of today interviewing the families but tonight police stress there is no known congestion between aguilar and his two victims. we dug up a missing person's report. this was filed shortly after the shooting by aguilar's mother.

prince george county police took the call. they read the journal and got worried he tracked his cell phone and it led him to colombia mall which was a crime scene. the investigator turned the findings over to howard county police who is his mother spoke to reporters through the phone of a family friend. >> he's never, never had a gun before, never been interested in guns, never been interested in anything like that. i don't know what happened. i st kw what happened. i don't know what happened. i feel for those other parents, i do. >> we checked and found aguilar had no criminal history. he bought the 12 gauge shotgun legally last month and the family friend says he was just promoted as a manager at a local dunkin donuts. police say the motive behind the

killings still a mystery tonight. >> we're learning more about the victims of this tragedy. tonight, family members of 25-year-old tyler johnson are breaking their silence. darcy spencer spoke with johnson's uncle tonight. she joins us live in college park with more, darcy? >> reporter: erica, as david said, the suspect lived in this house here in college park and police are saying there does not appear to be a connection between him and the victims but the uncle of one of those victims told me tonight he finds it hard to believe that there is no connection and that this was a random crime. >> just trying, not knowing why. >> reporter: george is the uncle of tyler johnson, the 25-year-old man shot and killed by a teenager armed with a shotgun at the colombia mall. >> a parent's worst nightmare. you don't realize it until you're in the middle of it. >> reporter: johnson was working at the zumies skate shop when he

where there was no cell phone, and that was their hope for many hours. >> petty says tyler was attending college and had a very bright future ahead of him. 21-year-old breanna was also killed in the shooting and as we mentioned, police say they have not found a connection between her and the gunman. she also worked at zumies. she was the store manager. we know she live in a shared home blocks away from where the gunman lived with his mother. we also know she had a 2-year-old son. the ceo of zummies says like you we are closely following the updates from the howard county police. they are briefings pains us. counselors have met with the store team today, the emotions are very raw and real and as co-workers and friends, we are pulling together. we are monitoring the

developments in the colombia mall shooting and as we mentioned, the mall will reopen tomorrow at 1:00. we'll have more updates on nbcwashington.com and of course, on news 4 today. that show begins at 4:26. well, prepare for a cool down this week. storm team four amelia segol is here. >> good evening. temperatures overnight will start to warm a little bit. tomorrow will hit the high temperature around the midday hours, and then arctic air makes its way into the area. temperatures will drop over 25 degrees in less than 24 hours. right now, mostly cloudy skies and a temperature of 29 degrees. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning it's chilly but it is not bit early cold with a temperature of 33 degrees, you can see by 9:00 a.m. we're in the mid 30s. like i said, we'll hit a high temperature around the midday hours and after that, temperatures plummet.

interview, virginia state senator creigh deeds is speaking more what happened. deeds talked to 60 minutes in the first tv interview since the attack back in november. he says he had to bring guss home from psychiatric tick treatment because an emergency custody ordered expired before they could final a hospital to treat him. he never thought things would turn violent. >> he said come at me. i said gus i love you so much. i said don't make this worse. he kept coming at me. i mean, i was -- i was bleeding a good bit. we'll use gus, i hope torks address mental health and make sure other people don't have to suffer through this. >> deeds also expressed his love for his son saying he doesn't want gus to be remembered by those final moments. a bill to extend the length of emergency custody orders is

the fire raged for hours until crews turned off the gas and the fire just burned out. >> no idea what that is. >> the explosion is affecting the gas supply across minnesota. people there are being asked to conserve because several main pipelines to minnesota come from canada. u.s. health officials spent the day on board a royal caribbean cruise ship where a virus is spreading. passengers and crew members have fallen ill so far. the ship made an emergency stop in the u.s. virgin islands after hundreds of people on board developed symptoms. passengers say it turned into a nightmare. >> it was a terrible experience. i've been on this boat before, we had an amazing time when we were here. this time, it's just been awful. >> officials from the centers for disease control say they believe the virus is spreading throughout the shop. they believe it was likely

spread through contaminated food or water. earlier this month a similar virus spread on another royalca the family of menounos says she was disconnected from the ventilator late this morning, days after a judge ordered the hospital to do so. she had a pulmonarcoticty embolism in november. she was 20 weeks pregnant at that time. the hospital refused to take her off life support siting a texas law from bans treatment from being with held from pregnant patients. it will cost more to mail a letter. starting today first class stamps will cost 49 cents. the post office says the increase is temporary to recover from severe mail decreases since 2009. the increase is not expected to last more than two years, but

postal officials say inflation could wind up making the rate hike permanent. you can still use existing forever stamps for first class mail. a symbolic gesture of peace by pope francis didn't exactly go as planned during a prayer service, the pope called for peace in the ukraine. he then invite twod children to release two white peace doves. this is where things change. one of the doves was attacked by a passing sea gull after the release, the other atakes by a crow. they broke free but it's not clear if they are okay. believe it or not, it will be too cold or windy in chicago for school tomorrow. the city cancelled classes because of the fridcold conditi. windchills are expected to be in the negative 25 range, around that area for much of the day. similar temperature expected for tuesday. there may be more cancellations

to come. hundreds of flights have also been grounded today. then take a look at this shocking video. this is of an ice storm in iowa. the driver of this jeep apparently ignored warnings to stay off of the thin ice during a festival this weekend. it's just one of at least eight cars that fell through the ice on saturday. there were no reports of injuries, but the cars had quite a bit of damage, and how you explain that to your insurance company? >> i don't know. i would never be driving on ice. i wouldn't risk it. >> absolutely not. we're not done with our cold streak at all and the next couple days, what a doozy right? >> yeah, big changes moving in. cancellations in chicago. that cold weather is headed our way so there will be school delays and cancellations on tuesday morning and potentially wednesday morning, as well. our windchill temperatures on those mornings will be anywhere from 15 to five degrees below zero at the coldest. tomorrow it's chilly.

it's not frigid but we're still below where we would be for january and another arctic blast arrives tomorrow night. it sticks around tuesday, wednesday into early thursday morning and we'll start to see temperatures warm more on thursday and the good news by the week end, we're finally looking at temperatures typical for this time of the year, in the 40s on the satellite and radar. partly to mostly cloudy, we're dry for the most part we're going to be dry tomorrow. temperatures, well, they are in the 20s. 29 in washington. 25 and 28 right now in camp springs. where your temperature is at right now, you c expect it to be by the morning hours, maybe a couple degrees warmer. a warm front actually lifts through the area overnight, so 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning a temperature of 32 degrees. i know a lot of runners on twitter said they are happy about the temperatures tomorrow morning. they can go for the morning run and not be so cold.

now, 11:00 a.m. plenty of clouds and we'll hit the high temperature of 37 degrees. the winds pick up throughout the day tomorrow, and then the temperatures fall. by 3:00 we're in the low 30s. the evening commute is dry. look at the temperatures in the mid 20s and they continue to drop overnight. so let's walk you through these lowering temperatures. monday, tomorrow afternoon at 1:30, we're in the 20s and low 30s, washington at that point at 31 degrees, getting on into the evening hours, temperatures continue to drop. you can see frederick at 18. leesburg at 19. cole pepper at 22. look at what happens by midnight. we're in the teens across the area. single digit readings, martins burg at nine degrees, washington at 17, on tuesday morning as you're heading into work, it will be brutally cold outside. a temperature inside of the

beltway of only 12 degrees, single digits in the suburbs, not only that but breezy, as well. when you factor in the winds, it will feel from 16 below zero to one degree below zero in washington. cold again on wednesday, a high temperature of 24 degrees and storm team four will keep a close eye on the coastal storm that will have a major impact on the gulf states up through north carolina. right now it's looking like it will be a little bit too far south to impact us with anything more than some cloud cover on wednesday. and then we jump ahead to friday. not only is it friday and we're starting to think about the weekend at that point, but look at the temperature. 41 degrees, that's almost the average high. we haven't seen that in quite some time. some rain is possible on saturday, maybe a little bit of snow otherwise a high of 42 and on sunday, erica, temperatures looking to be around average. ground hog day on sunday but i'm not joking about this. right now it does look like
