there's the intensity scale. when you see the grays, that's light snow. whites coming down hard. there are lingering areas of moderate snow there around lewis, delaware. elsewhere, a little bit there, southeast of cambridge on the eastern shore. southern maryland, northern neck, eastern shore. much of the region in the darker

grays, tapering off. still snowing southern calvert, much of st. mary's, the northern neck and lower eastern shore. this will is going to be ending here within the next hour or so. your big story today, this morning is the snow ending. still frigid and a cold afternoon. here are the snow totals. .3 inch to fairfax, parts of prince william county. near fredericksburg, a couple of inches. report in southern maryland. the highest amounts generally from south of waldorf, st. mary's county, southern calvert had three inches as did the eastern northern neck. it is still frigid this morning. temperatures around the region hovering just in the low teens to near ten degrees farther west and north. now let's check on those roadways around the region with first 4 traffic. danella? good morning. yeah, the drive on the main roads, very, very clear. some of the side streets, that's

what you have to look out for. i'm also tracking downed wires. this is what's happening. it's shutting down the ramp from westbound greenbelt road to northbound bw parkway. again, wires on the road there, shuts down the ramp. we'll head down now to d.c. 295 for folks trying to head northbound there. it is shut down between exit one and exit 3 because of an accident. also there's ice on the roadway. in addition to clearing that crash, they're also waiting for salt truck. i'm back in ten minutes. back to you. >> thank you. as tom mentioned, the flakes are already tapering off in parts of the region making for a slick commute for some drivers. news4's melissa mollet is live on the streets with road conditions there. >> reporter: good morning. right now we're on route 5 ukraine highway, of course, in charles county. we're headed toward waldorf. going to hit route 228. we did hear from one of our co-workers that the area is nasty. if you look at in front of the truck, the drive camera at a red light. we have seen a couple of blues.

nobody treating the roads. that was done overnight. you see it sort of a wet mess. a little bit slushy. no big deal except you can see in the median a little snow there. i can tell you when i was driving in, i live in rockville, and we did have pretty good snow. maybe an inch of a dusting covering the roads and making a little bit nasty and hard on the neighborhood streets. as you see, as we're driving south on crane highway, no big deal at this point. we're going to get a little further into charles county for you this morning and show you how thing are looking there. back to you. >> we'll check in with you soon. thank you. crews across the region working to clear roads of snow. many trucks in charles county still on the roads. they're dropping a brine milk late that will lower the freezing point of water and hopefully prevent streets from icing over. crews said that they would salt and plow roads as long as needed. drivers say winter weather like it can be miserable.

>> this here don't do nothing but close things down, make traffic bad. if it's going to snow, bring it on. >> all right. the snow can also be a money maker. some of the salt truck drivers did can make up to $1,000 in one night clearing roads. two death are being blamed on the storm that pounded communities from the gulf coast to virginia. in south carolina, almost ten inches of snow fell. two passengers were killed in two separate accidents. there heavy snowfall believed to be a factor in at least 35 other crashes in that same area. this morning the biggest concern is ice on the roads which could make a mess of the commute. 4:05. the winter storm is causing big pre-existing conditions problems in georgia. -- causing big numbers georgia. molette? use of representatives of schoolchildren in georgia are waking up in their classrooms this morning. this rare snow and ice storm forced them to spend the night this. we want to show you a live picture from the atlanta area of the roads. georgia's governor declaring a

4:09. we're tracking another round of winter weather this morning. part of same snowstorm that's pummelling the south is affecting many of us. we're tracking the storm as well as some possible bad road conditions. weather & traffic on the 1s coming up in a moment here. the winter weather could cause you some problems if you need to catch a flight out of town today. more than 800 flights are already canceled nationwide this morning. about 30 were supposed to be out of our three airports. the south, expect to change re your plans. airports in places like atlanta, houston, new orleans, and raleigh topped the list for cancelations today. new orleans says it's unlikely any flights will get out today. many airports in the south say they simply don't have the de-icing equipment to make planes safe. >> for so many places that didn't get snow, the stuff that melted, refroze -- so if you don't have a snow issue, you will probably have an ice issue.

i did. >> be careful. side roads are slick, as well. 4:11. time for weather & traffic on the 1s. tom kierein now. >> there's capitol hill and much of the metro area had only a quarter to half an inch overnight. it has ended now. let me know how much you've h. connect on social media, twitter, and facebook. we didn't get much. reports so far generally with a quarter to a half an inch. where is it still snowing? areas in darker gray. light flurries, lingering light snow northern neck of virginia and st. mary's county, southern calvert county. on the eastern shore, the brighter areas is where it's coming down harder. just bigger flakes southeast of cambridge, between sals brea and cambridge -- salisbury and cambridge, toward the eastern shore, they got the heavier amounts of snow. a frigid morning. what has fallen on untreated surfaces has stuck. even though it's a thin coating, it's enough if it's an untreated surface to slipda and slide.

video in to the newsroom, but also an updated list of school dallas cowboys adelays -- schoo delays and closings. president obama is preparing to take his state of the union on the road this morning. he will travel four states over the rest of the week to push proposals he outlined in his speech. in some cases he says he is prepared to go it alone. the president says he will use executive order powers to protect federal lands, raise gas mileage standards for big trucks, and establish a government-backed retirement savings program. as we reported yesterday morning, he says the biggest move will be an effort to raise the minimum wage. >> in the coming weeks, i will issue an executive order requiring federal contractors to pay their federally funded employees a fair wage of at least $10.10 an hour because if you cook our troops meals or wash their dishes, you should not have to live in poverty. laboratory road and suitland parkway. good news, d.c. police are saying they hope to reopen your northbound lanes in about ten minutes. that's great news there. we'll head back up to the ramp from greenbelt road, still shut down to northbound bw parkway. that's because of downed wires there. and i want to show you a live look. this is route 50 near 301. you still see a lot of snow on the road. 50 in bowie, just a slushy and slick -- just as slushy and slick. closer to the beltway, lanes look much clearer. back to you. >> all right. thank you. 4:25. the frigid temperatures causing a very high number of water main breaks across the region. wssc says it has responded to 427 water main breaks this month alone. that's more than 15 per day. the utility says it is still making repairs on 69 of those breaks. wssc says the record for most breaks in a single month is 611. that was set in january of
