we're following two important stories in maryland

tonight. smoke and flames billoing from the roof of a townhouse in laurel. crews are trying to keep that fire from spreading. chopper 4 has dramatic pictures. >> first in gaithersburg, new video from the scene of a deadly police involved shooting off lake katrine terrace where jacquie ben senn is right now with details. >> doreen, we know that two people a montgomery county police officer and another person were found with gunshot injuries moments ago, we learned one of the people has been pronounced dead. police won't say which one. police were called to the home on lake katrine terrace just off woodfield road near the montgomery air park about 8:30 p.m. it's not clear at this point who made the 911 call. an unidentified woman in obvious emotional distress left the scene with detectives. >> what we have here on the scene is an officer involved shooting involving an off-duty officer. the shooting occurred in the

residence, and it appears to be a domestic in nature. we do have two injured parties as a result of this incident. the nature of the injuries and the identities at this point are not being reesed. >> this is the officer's home? >> yes, it is. >> relationship with the victims? >> everyone involved tonight are family members. >> police kept the street blocked off while investigators examined the inside of the neatly kept colonial style house, a smoeks spokesman for the police department did not reveal where inside the home the shooting took place. we are told by neighbors that the couple who lives in that home have at least one child, a male child believed to be in his teens possibly early 20s. again, two people shot at the home of a montgomery county police officer officer this evening. one of those people has now been pronounced dead. jacquie ben senn. >> breaking news in prince gorges county. chopper 4 was in the air as smoke filled the sky.

a townhouse caught fire. part of the roof collapsed. the flames quickly spread toe homes nearby. shomari stone is in laurel to tell us what happened. >> right now firefighters you can see are over here and have their hoses and putting them. they've put out the fire. you can see it over there. three town homes destroyed. a ladder truck right there. they're still trying to figure out what caused this pire. tonight, chopper 4 hovered above the scene. the fire started in a townhouse in the 400 block of compton avenue in laurel around 7:00. prince gorges county firefighters tell us the townhouse was heavily engulfed in flames, smoke and quickly spread to the town homes it next door. six adults and two kids lived in this one on the far left. it took fire crews around 45 minutes to put it out. firefighters battled the blaze inside but then rushed outside because it was too dangerous. the roof collapsed and the homeowner doesn't have a place to live. neighbors are stunned. >> it's crazy.

it's cold. just coming home and i saw the trucks. >> the good news is no one was hurt. however, again, you have this family and a man without a place to live. prince gorges county citizens services is unit is helping them out. in laurel, i'm she mare stone, news4. >> new developments following that rare winter storm down in georgia. drivers are finally back home tonight after spending up to 16 hours trapped in their cars. the city of atlanta still digging out after snow and ice paralyzed the city. 10,000 children slept at schools last night after their buses couldn't make it on the roads. many drivers took shelter in grocery stores to escape the cold in their cars. tomorrow, crews will take drivers to get their abandoned cars that remain along the highways there. up to 50myon people have felt the impact of the storm. in the south, they're having so much trouble because they have fewer resources to cope with the

snow and less experienced driving in it. at least ten people have been killed in weather-related incidents all over the southeast. and it is not just a problem on the road. thousands of flights have been canceled and delayed because of the conditions. >> no major problems in our area, but some places here did get snow. nearly five inches fell in calvert county, maryland, overnight. moments ago we learned the schools will be on a two-hour delay tomorrow. drivers we spoke with earlier today said it was a challenge to get home last night as the snow started to fall. now that the roads are clear, the big concern is the cold. temperatures are dropping into the single digits again tonight. but then we rebound. doug has more on all this. >> the rebound cannot come soon enough for so many off us that are just done with this cold, cold january that we've seen out there now. let's show you today's weather story. that weather story take a look

at a couple of things. it is the cold and you know we are talking about those cold temperatures out there tonight. take a look at the numbers. right now we mentioned single digits. one area in the single digits is manassas at 9. gaithersburg at 16, deferring c. coming in at 22. we're going to go close to zero in many hours. last cold start. i do think this will be th last frigid morning in the next seven days. i don't see any more numbers like this zero in some of the coldest suburbs to about 14. light winds and it's going to be plain cold out there. here we go, warming nicely as we head into the weekend. i've got great numbers for you, but i've also got a couple more in the way of storms. i'll show you had he they arrive. >> breaking news now in prince gorges county. a woman says three men forced her into her car at gunpoint. she says it happened on ramblewood drive in district heights about 8:30 tonight. they drove her to several atms

and made her withdraw money, they dropped her off later. she called police. the victim was not injured. police are looking for the three men and the woman's silver 2005 chrysler pacifica with maryland tags. some disturbing new details uncovered in the pages of the columbia mall gunman's journal. howard county police say darian aguliar planned the attack and apologized to his family for what he was about to do. they say he wrote about killing people but never named anyone specific and wrote that he was ready to die reportedly. he wrote about needing to see a mental health professional his that. aguliar was 19 yea old. he killed breanna ben low low and tyler johnson at the zumia store inside the mall on saturday. then he killed himself. >> in northwest, d.c., the search is under way for the person who shot an employee at

aida's on second street. police say a mon got into the an argument with the employee. at least one shot was fired. the 50-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital and he remains in critical condition tonight. police canvassed the area looking for the shooter but so far no arrests. they're asking anyone who witnessed the shooting to come forward. >> tonight, a grieving daughter tells news 4 that d.c. fire and ems workers refused to help her dying father. mayor vincent gray has spoken to the family and says he is outraged about what happened. 77-year-old med drick mills collapsed across the street from a fire station on rhode island avenue on saturday. his daughter says she and other witnesses begged for help. and firefighters told them it was against procedure to respond. mills died of a heart attack. >> i would prefer a person to break a procedure, and if you can't break a procedure, then you're in the wrong profession when you're dealing with life

and death situations. >> i was absolutely furious when i saw it. the investigation is under way. >> investigators are also trying to find out whether dispatchers sent an ambulance to rhode island avenue northwest instead of rhode island avenue northeast. president obama hit the road today going to prince gorges county to push for a higher minimum wage. he spoke at the costco store in lanham to support his state of the union pledge. workers at the warehouse shopping chain average twice the minimum wage in their earnings. theresident is also taking action where he can. he will issue an executive order requiring federal contractors to pay employees at least $10.10 an hour on new projects. >> if you work hard, you should be able to pay your rent, buy your groceries, look after your kids. >> republicans are against raising the minimum wage and are upset that the president is using the executive order. they say the move will force

businesses to hire fewer employees. an apology of after a u.s. congressman threatened a reporter after last night's state of the union address. the new york 1 reporter asked republican congressman michael grimm from long island into an investigation about his campaign finances. >> i'm not thinking about anything off topic. this is only about the president's speech. thank you. >> what about -- >> let me be clear to you. you do that again ---ing >> you're not a man. you're a boy. >> grimm first said he was extremely annoyed. and then apologized when questioned by kelly o'donnell from nbc news today. >> i'm a human being and sometimes your emotions get the better of you. the bottom line is it shouldn't happen. you shouldn't lose your cool. that's why i apologized. >> the reporter says he accepts grimm's apology and will not pursue legal action.

because i still need to use metro. >> it's -- 20% hike wouldn't change it. >> there will be another public meeting tomorrow in springfield, virginia. also meetings will be held in the district and in rockville and arlington. you can find details about times and locations and take an online survey on metro's website. >> to a story you saw first here on news4, a massive construction project will soon get under way in downtown d.c. it might well affect your commute. third street tunnel will be covered completely with four new office buildings and a residential building. just to create the framework of steel over the tunnel will cost $250 million. the work is expected to start in mid-march. it will take almost four years to complete it all. develop ares say there will be traffic issues and they plan to keep the lanes open but things will slow down through there. that is a big project. >> there will be traffic issues? >> i know that comes as a shock.

snow cover there, down to 7 right now. i think some of you will be close to zero tonight and waking up to that number when you wake up in the morning. storm team 4 radar, no rain, no snow to talk about. we're not going to be seeing any of that for the next couple days. cloud cover down to the south starting to move down to the south and east. as it does so, the more we clear, the more we'll continue to cool overnight. as far as what we're going to be seeing, look at current temperatures. 28 minneapolis. it's 19 in the atlanta. 17 in raleigh. these are the places that saw the snow, the cold all the way down towards the florida panhandle where they're dealing with ice, even new orleans down around the freezing mark. we need to see a warmup and need to see it across the entire eastern half of the nation. we've had cold air, the polar air making it right out of the poles in towards our region producing cold air across the east. that pattern will change the cold air will move back towards the west. mild air begins to move up. but notice where the jet stream

is. this is the jet stream right here. the difference between the cold and warm air comes right across our region. what does that mean for us? >> that also brings the storm path across our region and depending on where we are, on the cold side or warm side depends what we get. lows down to 14 in d.c., 5 in leesburg. paw tux the river i had you at 10. you're already down to 7 right now. next couple days, 33 on thursday. but with plenty of sunshine tomorrow, tomorrow afternoon will be a lot nicer than today. 46 on friday. 48 on saturday. a nice day under cloud cover. then on sunday, super bowl sunday, 50% or rather a 30% chance of showers but a high near 50. most of the day will be dry. notice the next couple days here. let's talk about the day on tuesday. because this is what we can expect. a possible big storm and this one could start off as some snow, maybe freezing rain. it could pose big problems but then behind it, we run into the

potential for heavy rain. next monday, tuesday and wednesday, a little bit unsettled to say the least. monday right now looks lik chance of rain or snow, depending on temperatures. right now i've got them in the upper 30s. >> i don't want to think past that. warmer days are coming. >> it may get warmer but i think it gets stormyer too into thank you, doug. >> a driver lost control and crashed into the westwood college building tonight. it happened off of fairfax drive in arlington. we don't know what led up to the accident but the driver was taken to the hospital. no word yet on the person's condition.
