4:00, and knnotice the cloud cor was throughout the day. it is going to p be whil chilly by 9:10 p.m. sunday evening and the temperature is 42, and right now, all of sunday is looking dry and plenty mild. the thing is that on monday, we have to get ready for what is just a little bit of the snow moving into the area. right now, it is light accumulati accumulation, and right now, the event should be overwith by 1:00 or 2:00 in the afternoon on monday, and saturday's high is 52 and sunday up to 55, and a 60% chance of snow right now with the high temperature of 39 degrees for monday. certainly a storm system that we are g are going to be watching closely, and of course, the good news, if there is any for early part of next week after all of the parting on sunday is that with the high temperatures, this warm, i don't think that we will have any major road issues to deal with on monday. coming up, another storm after this one and i will show you this one in a few minutes.

>> and right now, the flames ripped through this town home in sterling monday, and one of the homeowners is in intensive care, and his five dogs were in the house when the fire broke out, and firefighters rescued four of them. one of the firefighters has started and online fund-raiser to help pay for the dogs' medical bills and find them temporary shelter. and researchers in france say that football fans consume more calories when their team is losing than when they win. and the binging usually continues into the next day, and they also found that people who live in cities where the football team is are from c consume more calories and foods higher in saturated fats. they say that binging this the super bowl is okay, but don't continue it on the day-to-day basis. >> i guess not.

. does the cold weather have an affect on car engine oil? and why do they use roman numerals to number the super bowl? and why can't you keep your own phone number with a different carrier? and we have a friday edition of "ask liz." so let's talk about the first question, because jackie says that the check oil light comes on in the extreme cold weather, and she has seen it happen a few times, and does the cold affect the oil? >> well, that is interesting question, and the aaa atlanta says that there could be a correlation of the oil light and the cold weather, and typically when the engine oil light comes on, you should check the oil level as it could be low, but with the freezing weather, the oil light may not mean low oil. that is because in the extreme cold oil thickens and it does
4:25 pm
not flow as quickly to vital parts of the en gyp and to combat the cold, try starting the car and running it for at least one minute before you drive and that is going to help warm up the oil, an aaa says that the maintenance varies from the car to car, and check the owner's manual, and get the oil level checked if it the light does not disappear. >> and the next question comes from a viewer jim, why do they use the roman numeral to number the super bowl instead of the regular numbers? >> well, as we wait for super bowl xlviii this sunday or x-l-v-i-i-i. it all started with the super bowl five with the letter v, and it is credited to lamar hunt who founded the american football league and one of the godfathers of the modern nfl, and by using the roman numerals instead of the regular numbers, hunt made the game seem, get this, more important, and that is all there is to it, and maybe it keeps us to remembering the roman n

numerals. >> well, i would not have known from the xlviii. >> yes. >> and the last question is about switching the cell phone carriers, and how can you switch the carrier and keep your number. >> everybody wants to do that and the fcc, the federal communications commission told us do not terminate service with the existing company before initiating service with the new company, and then contact the new company, and be prepared to the provide all of your current account information, and which might include your password for logging on to the account, and also important to note that some of the companies may charge fees for the cost incurred to switch your number from the old provider to the new. if you have a question that you'd like us to consider for "ask liz" send it to ask liz@washington.com, or send it to twitter or on facebook, and coming up on "news4 at 5:00," how do the salt treatments on the road affect the paint on the car, and how do reissued credit cards affect your credit score,

good afternoon, i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm barbara harrison. there is apparently no threat from the suspicious white powder that was sent to hotels near the super bowl. they were found in east rutherford, and a law enforcement agent tells nbc news
4:30 pm
that it is all negative and appears to be a hoax. additional tests on the powder will be done though as a precaution. and a reservist is behind bars on suspicions of child porn. david mcnair appeared in d.c. superior court a few hours ago, and police say that he sent images of child porn over to the internet to a police officer, and riley is a reservist reportedly assigned to macdill air force base and he is in washington for a national security class. >> a 6-inch water main broke, and crews are working to repair a broken gas main, and it is going going to be shutdown for a week, we are told. and some workers got stuck in the d.c. tower today. it took 20 minutes for them to get out. it is the second time this week
4:31 pm
that the repair workers got stuck in the monument's elevator, and it is not clear how many workers were trapped. 100 new cameras go online tomorrow, and tickets will be replacing warnings for the traffic law violators and also it will capture those who do not stop for pe des trayians or roll through a stop sign or even bust truckers who are driving ob street s th streets that -- on streets that are deemed too narrow or the them. we have breaking news right now out of new jersey and the bridge scandal enveloping chris christie's administration. our nbc correspondent michael isikoff is here with a new development. >> a bombshell into the george washington bridge lane closures. the lawyers for david wildstein who was the port authority official who ordered those lane closures has just written, and released the letter that he has sent to the head of the port
4:32 pm
authority in which he says that governor christie had knowledge of the lane closures in the period when the lanes were closed contrary to what the governor stated public any a two-hour press conference he gave immediately before mr. wildstein was scheduled to appear before the transportation committee. mr. wildstein contests the accuracy of various statements that the governor made about him, and he can prove the inaccuracy of some. this is about as big a development as we could get in this investigation. governor christie, of course, he has adamantly denied that he had any knowledge of those lane closures. and he knew nothing about it, and he said that he was stunned and shocked when his, when he learned that his aides had been involved in this, and he fired the deputy chief of staff, and fired his former campaign manager, and now david wildstein, a long-time political
4:33 pm
aide to governor christie and they went to high skochool together, and they go back years has now written this letter saying governor christie has not told the full story. >> and wildstein said when and how he plans to release the proof? >> he has not. there is a, of course sh, a criminal investigation by the u.s. attorney in newark, and mr. wildstein's lawyer has hinted that he may want immunity as part of some sort of cooperation deal, and so that this letters appears to be an effort to get that immunity the deal ha he is looking for. >> and michael, quickly, this is going to be having widespread fallout, and what impact do you expect it to have, and has christie had any response to this? >> this just broke, and we do not yet have a response from the governor's office, and we can expect one, but, look, everybody's going to want to know now to to see the proof, and what does david wildstein has and hear what he has to.
4:34 pm
>> thank you, michael isikoff. >> thank you. and there is still no agreement in congress to restore long-term unemployment benefits for those who have been out of work for several months or mo, and today, president obama made a move to help the workers get up who are trying to get a job. steve handelsman is live on capitol hill with more on this. steve? >> well, thank you, pat. it is a statistical fact the longer you are out of work, the harder it is to get hire d and president obama said today, that is is not fair. >> reporter: corporateeo came to the white house, and the heads of ebay, and boeing and marriott and others to join president obama's push to help the long-term unemployed. 4 million americans have been out of work for more than six months, and studies show that fact alone hurts their prospects. >> so if are the are two people who are identical, and one person has been unemployed for
4:35 pm
longer than the other person, then the employer will say that maybe the person who is unemployed for shorter period of time is a little bit better. >> reporter: mr. obama has 300 companies to hire without taking into account how long someone has been looking, and he signed an order to make that the government policy. >> so today, i am directing every federal agency to make shure that we are evaluating th candidates on the level without regard to their employment history. >> reporter: it is another obama move without congress. but on immigration, the white house sees a chance for cooperation. yesterday, the republicans said they would allow the 12 million undocumented immigrants to stay in the u.s., and not on the path to citizenship which most of the democrats want, but not to be deported as the republicans once demanded. >> now, there is movement. that is a good thing. >> reporter: and a deal on immigration again looks possible.

4:41 pm
son, and others have been w wondering if there are warning signs to look out for. >> well, the big thing here is that the parents oftentimes see the warning signs, but they don't act on the warning signs which is the problem here, and everybody is more or less familiar with the things that you need to look out for, and is there a change in the personality, and is your son or daughter sleeping a lot, withdrawing, isolating, angry, irritable the, and all of those thing thes, and people can recognize, that and the problem is that they don't do anything about it, and they think it is a phase or maybe they will grow out of it, and maybe they are having a tough time with it, and not seeking the appropriate help that the gut is telling them they should seek. >> and what should parents do if they are concerned about a change in the behavior? >> well, first you sit down with the child and you say, i'm
4:42 pm
conce concerned about the way things are going, and these are some of the things that i have been noticing and have you noticed this with yourself at all and are you concerned about the way things are go g fing for you an based upon what you are hearing, it is going to give you more information and make a decision as to whether you need to take a next step and if you do, say to the child, look, i'm really worried about you and i would like for you the sit down and talk to somebody who has experience in helping kids with these problems. this is not what i do, and now somebody else can help me with this, and there is nothing wrong with you and nothing to be ashamed of and everybody needs help and in fact, 1 of 4 people in this country meets criteria for some mental health issue, and you are not alone and it is good to get help, and you need the help. >> and a vast majority of the people with the mental illness never become violent and red flags for people who could have potential violent behavior? >> well, violence is so difficult to predict, and it is incredibly hard to predict even as a psychiatrist, and generally, you are looking for a few warning signs.
4:43 pm
and number one, it is generally men, young men, and that is one warning sign, and the other is that if you have a history of violence and the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and has the person had issues with anger, and do they have a drug or alcohol problem, because if they have a mental health issue, and you combine it with drugs or alcohol, that is a dangerous cocktail there. >> and thank you so much for joining us, and communication between the parent and the child is the most important thing of all. >> and absolutely. you have to know your child. >> and back to you, barbara and pat. can amanda knox fight extradition after she is convicted of murder again? we will talk to pete williams about it when we return. and a school lunch lady is put on leave after trashing kids' food at lunch. >> and count down, we have 48 more days left, and that means
4:44 pm
lots of winter left, and we have several snow chances with the stormy pattern and i will tell you the next chance of snow when "news4 at 4" returns.
4:45 pm
4:46 pm
i will never go willingly back to the place where i -- i'm
4:47 pm
going to fight this up till the very end. >> that is amanda knox on "good morning america" today reacting to the reinstatement of the guilty verdict in the murder of her former roommate meredith kercher. and they e reinstated the murder verdict handed down to her and her ex-boyfriend raffaele sollecito. today, eye titalian police took sollecito into custody near the austrian border, and knox returned to the u.s. after 2011 after an appeals court acquitted her. she can stay here in this country until the appeals process continues, and that could take a year. while knox is vowing to fight the verdict, her former boyfriend has surrendered his passport to the italian police, and it has brought attention to the intricacies to the italian judicial system.
4:48 pm
>> and there are three trials with different conclusions. and here to explain all of this is correspondent pete williams. and pete, good to have you with us, but what is the next move for her? >> well, she will appeal, and last time it worked for her, and they in essence threw it out and it is now the second round that convicted her and she is undoubtedly going to appeal again in the eye titalian court >> and how many times can she do that? >> well, i'm not sure, but if they keep coming up with new grounds, they can keep doing i. >> and will the u.s. extradite her? >> well, that is a good question, because it is a complicated process. while extradition is not just a legal process, but it is a diplomatic process. if she is ultimately convicted in the italian courts, they would seek her extradition, and go to the state department, and embassy in washington, and the state department, and ask her to be sent back, and the secretary of state would decide whether this request would conform with the extradition treaty with italy and whether it is in the u.s. foreign policy interest. and if the state says yes, it goes to the justice department
4:49 pm
and then referred to prosecutor in seattle where she lives, and if the judge orders her extradited, then it goes back to the secretary of state who would make the ultimate decision. it is not just a decision for the courts or just for the justice department, but it is also a diplomatic decision, and of course, the secretary the of state could say it is an american, and we won't send her back, and it makes it harder if we want people in italy to be sent here, and it is not an easy decision to make. >> and pete, a lot of people wonder if she faces real prison time if she goes back to italy? >> if she goes back and convicted, absolutely. she would be in prison for 30 years, and although time off for good behavior and perhaps lower than that, but you can perhaps understand why she is not eager to go back. >> and why a difference of opinion? why back and forth and one court overturning the other? >> well, it has to do with the nature of the evidence, and the murkiness of the case, and the fact that there were other people there and the evidence is not clear and it has been a close call for the courts.
4:50 pm
>> and what about the italian boyfriend, would he, and they found him at the border, they say, and he says he was visiting his girlfriend, and he'll go back now, but he does not have to go the prison, right? >> weblg his case can be on appeal as well, and he can be on the same stay the tus as her out on bail while the case is appealed. >> thank you, pete williams. >> my pleasure. and stay tuned for right after "news4 at 4," the amanda knox verdict, and pete will have more coming up on the nbc nightly news with brian williams. and talk thing about the weather now, as we are experiencing the e beginning of a warmup out there. >> and a warming trend, and this is going to take us right through the weekend and then once again, the temperatures will have the brakes put on it, and that means with the air that is going to be chilly and turning cold, and storms moving in. we will be back to really being on the guard out there and a light wind and let me show you the planner forecast at 5:28 here, and look at most of the evening, if you have plans to go
4:51 pm
utmost of the evening the temperatures will remain above the freezing mark, and folks, compared to where it has been that means it is pretty comfortable evening. i am calling it chilly instead of cold as we drop down the 36 by 9:00 and 34 by 11:00 p.m., and then under the freezing mark. of course, under 30 in the morning, but the range is 22 to 30 and those were more like the high temperatures in the days this week, a bd a few clouds are expected to cross the area. and let many e show you southern maryland tomorrow the, because it is likely to be some of the warmer spots, and in the water, cooler, and 53 is the higher temperature in huntingtown, and in mechanicsville with a high of 54. and so it will be under a partly cloudy sky. and the storm system a couple of weeks ago we were talking about the clippers moving through west to east, and now it is a pattern change where it is milder moving in and we will see the storms moving out of the south, and
4:52 pm
