aviation administration officials examine a piece of metal that fell through the roof of a northern virginia woman's home where they think it came from. one week later, a special tribute to the victims of the columbia mall shooting. and finally, a break from the frigid temperatures. but it's short lived. a winter storm that's on the horizon. good evening. i'm chris lawrence. we've got one more day of warmer weather before winter returns in full force. temperatures expected to be in the 50s again tomorrow. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia siegal with more. >> it was a nice day today with a high of 53 degrees. tomorrow, temperatures will be similar. starting off tomorrow morning, it's a chilly start, but not too bad for the first weekend in february. temperature of 36 degrees. any morning sunshine will give way to afternoon clouds. 3:00 that's when we'll hit the

high of 55. during the evening hours, 6:00 p.m., we're still around 50 degrees. at 6:00 p.m., still mainly dry, but shortly thereafter, rain will overspread the area, some changing over to snow early monday morning. with that, a winter storm watch begins 11:00 p.m. tomorrow evening. this includes loudoun, montgomery and frederick counties. coming up, i'll let you know how much snow you can expect. chris? >> what a change. the federal aviation administration is investigating a mysterious piece of metal that fell into a woman's house. it happened in herndon in the flight path of dulles. darcy spencer was with the homeowner when faa investigators arrived at her home. >> reporter: tonight, an investigation supervise we are the faa leaves a home in

herndon. that's where this object crashed through the house landing in the dining room. the faa trying to figure out if it fell off a plane. >> we have no idea if it's an aircraft part or where it came from and we have to investigate it. >> reporter: abby baker says she found the piece of metal and the hole in her upping and in her ceiling friday morning. when she returned from taking her child to school, she lives in a dull else airport flight path. >> at first i thought maybe a gas pipe burst. then i found this piece here that i thought maybe was a pipe from the gas pipe. but when i had the gas company come out, it was identified as likely a piece of aircraft. >> reporter: this mystery object came down into the typing room. baker's concern, what if someone had been standing here when it happened. it's about four inches long and weighs a couple of pounds. the faa plans to have the national transportation safety board analyze the object and

send inspectors to dulles airport on monday. >> do some ground work to see if any airlines have reported any incident with one of their aircraft. >> reporter: baker says she's glad no one was hurt and hopes this never happens to her or anyone else in the flight path area again. >> had it been a little this way or little that way, it could have hit my dog or the kids in the elementary school. if there had within children over there, it could have fallen on them. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. new at 11:00, a search tonight for a man who allegedly stole a shotgun from an outdoor world bass pro shop. police released this surveillance video tonight. it shows a man walking through the shop with what police say is a stolen gun. store managers say the man broke into a misplay case and took it. what's not clear is how he was able to get in the store after

hours. if you drive in the district, be aware. 100 new traffic cameras started issuing citations today. the cameras will ticket speeders and drivers who block the box at an intersection and snap pictures of drivers who don't stop for pedestrians. fines can range from $50 to $300. we've got a full list of where the cameras are located on our website. just search for speed cameras. special tributes in columbia, maryland today, just one week after the mall shooting that left two people dead. a moment of silence was held at exactly 11:15 this morning. police say that was the moment 19-year-old darien aguilar killed the two and then shot himself. a wall of remembrance now surrounds the zumiez store where that shooting occurred.

and skaters held their own tribute for the vims at centennial lake. >> we were hurting. >> police have released some detail from aguilar's journal which he wrote he needed mental help. they still don't know why he shot those two victims. new jersey gofr your chris christie firing back against accusations he knew more about the bridge lane closure than he originally said. nbc news rd a copy of the e-mail christie sent to supporters saying the latest claims are not true. it attacked "the new york times" and his former appointee who made the allegations. david wildstein's attorney claims he has evidence that christie knew about the lane closures when they were happening. some say if this development proves to be true, christie town forced out of office. >> if david wildstein gets the

video of the destruction caused by a massive bolder in italy. the video was just released tonight. it got dislodged during a land slide last week and rolled down a hill, hitting a farmhouse. amazingly no one was injured. a second bolder stopped just a few feet short of hitting the house. geologists and emergency crews are still working to clear the area. three people are dead tonight after a ware of cell phone towers collapsed in west virginia. it happened in clarksburg. two contractors were tethered to a cell tower when it toppled over. then another tower fell, killing a fire department employee on the ground. two other workers were injured. they had all been working to strengthen the tower's support when they collapsed. the start of the winter olympics in sochi is just days away. tonight, organizers lit up the sky with fireworks for rehearsal. there was also a light display and music coming from the stadium where the opening er ceremonies will take place.

chocolate brought hundreds out today in fairfax. the two-day festival includes tasting and a screening of "willie wonka and the chocolate factory." it runs through tomorrow. local dentists standing by. less than 24 hours away from the big game. but the party before the game has crossed two states. in new york city, broadway transformed into a big carnal for the event. area politicians and nfl brass took some time-out for a toboggen run. and in new jersey, it was all

business, making sure metlife stadium was secure. and the tsa brought in about two dozen bomb sniffing dogs to patrol the stadium. the wait is over. we're just one day away from the puppy bowl. this year's games feature 66 puppies in need of a home. they'll show off their best skills in hopes of being adopted. first lady michelle obama will appear on the show. they hosted a training camp for the dogs at the white house. 12 million people tuned in last year. it airs at 3:00 tomorrow. while we enjoyed a mild, sunny day here in the d.c. area, parts of the midwest are getting slammed. snow and ice started in chicago and continued right through today. enough to close a major interstate for several hours after a truck jackknifed. but that detoured thousands of

motorists on side streets creating more problems. 450 flights at o'hare and midway were canceled. turns out pretty much anything can cause a traffic jam in our area, including, yep, the car wash. cars were lined up for blocks today and you would see the same backup in maryland and virginia. people are all trying to get the salt off their cars from the last storm before the next one moves in. and i guess they've got about 24 hours to get that done. >> our next winter storm arrives tomorrow. i know somebody that went to a car wash today. they were turning people away, that's how busy it was. so it was the popular thing to do today. tomorrow, you could get your car wash, but rain arrives tomorrow evening, changing over to snow on monday. for some areas. if you're under this winter storm watch, you can expect the most snow. watch here for the areas in blue.

this e begins 11:00 p.m. tomorr evening. including montgomery, loud op and frederick counties. expect 2 to 5 inches of snow accumulation, isolated areas could see up to six. the d.c. metro area through southern maryland and the northern neck, some snow is possible, but more of a rain event for you. any rain or snow will come to abend on monday afternoon. temperatures right now, 45 in washington. 39 in gaithersburg and manassas. tomorrow, well, it won't be bad. the temperatures comfortable, highs in the mid 50s but clouds around throughout the day. it is a dry day, though. so you're going out to get the shopping done, heading off to church, the weather will not be impacting your commute to those places. with future weather, i want to show you the rain moving into the area. we're starting it off at noon tomorrow. notice how the entire area is still dry. 7:00, we start to see rain

moving into areas like frederick and hagerstown, back through winchester. once we hit night, everybody is seeing rain. as cold air moves in, we see the rain change over to snow. notice where we're seeing the most snow here, mainly if you're under the winter storm watch. 8:00 a.m. monday morning, the commune a tricky one. either dealing with rain in southern maryland or snow in northern maryland. 8:00 a.m. on monday, leesburg seeing snow. noon, the d.c. metro area, most of the area seeing a little bit of snow. this starts to wind down by 3:00 p.m. on monday. 5:00, the evening commute, i don't think it will be an issue. at that point, we will be dry. here is your snow forecast. i will be posting this on facebook in a little bit. the d.c. metro area can expect one to two inches, except for northern montgomery county and

fan. tonight's win for the wizards was big for a number of reasons. oklahoma city came into the city as the hottest team in the nba, winning ten straight. and it's the first game john wall has played since being named an nba all-star. his performance showed he was deserving that honor. welcoming home kevin durant to the verizon center. not a very warm welcome. first quarter, wizards up eight off the turnover. trevor ariza and wall with a two on one. that's just two easy right there. the wizards up by ten. okc came back. within three. reggie jackson to durant, who throws it down. he had 26 points. a quiet 26 points for kevin durant. wall, he stole the show. had a great game tonight, gets the turnover here and the flush. 17 points, a career high 15 assists for john wall tonight.

he had 6 steals, 4 rebounds, wizards win impressively 96-81. let's talk some football now. not that peyton manning could feel anymore pressure for super bowl xlviii tomorrow, but tonight, manning was named the league's mvp for the regular season. it's his fifth mvp award. no other player has won more than three. no doubt manning will be in the hall of fame some day alongside some great players. here's a look at the 2014 hall of fame class. michael strahan headlines the class. he'll be enshrined with derrick brooks, andre reed, who played one season with the redskins. ray guy becomes the first punter to ever make it into the hall of fame. also defensive yak williams, and walter jones. and six-time pro bowl defensive end claude humphrey. back to basketball now. after losing five straight

games, desperate is the word that best describes georgetown. they needed a win in michigan state. spartans, the 7th ranked team in the country. in the second half, georgetown up seven. gary harris pulls it down and he's going the other way. harris, you will not stop. 20 points for him. hoyas up by five georgetown up two, with a little over a minute left. beautiful tip-in, that extends georgetown's lead to four. final seconds, the hoyas' defense brought them home. trout with the flush there. that one seals it. hoyas beat michigan state. your final score, 64-60. elsewhere, down in blacksburg, maryland visiting virginia tech.
