it although it's much colder. jim said it's in the mid 50s there now. here we are about 20 degrees colder. wear dunn into the -- 30 degrees colder, low to mid 20s to near 30 in washington. and nearby suburbs. generally just in the low to mid 20s. right now, dulles down to just 20 degrees. 21 manassas, prince william county, and warrenton, fauquier county, just at 21 degrees. so a cold start, gaithersburg also at 21. prince george's county, many locations there, in the mid 20s. and we've got a calm wind with a clear sky. lots of sunshine this morning. i think we'll stay below freezing through about 9:00 this morning. by 8:00, still hovering in the upper 20s, near 30 much of the metro area. then i think by noontime ought to be into the mid 30s. en and then -- then during the afternoon, clouds, partly sunny, highs in the 30s in the rural areas. icing this week, i think it will be getting above freezing. watch for some of the ice to be melting and coming out of the trees where it's lingering there.

now a look at our friday commute. here's danella. do we have any problems yet? >> good morning. well, i have things clearin up. this is good news. if you're traveling in the district, i was tracking earlier fire activity. it was along lincoln road between r street and t street. it was set to clear at 7:00 a.m., it's clear now. roads are open. we'll head up now route 29. making the commute this morning between columbia, maryland, heading all the way to silver spring. travel lanes are open, i'm not seeing accidents or delays. and in fact, as far as volume, increasing just a bit for folks traveling i-95. but no delays, not even minor. southbound at 198, northbound, as well, clear. also still keeping my eye on the rails, metro, marc, vre, no problems. develop noug ing at 6:02, a manhunt for a killer who gunned down an alexandria music teacher on her door step. this is ruthanne lodato.

police are searching high and low for the man who knocked on her front door and shot her and another woman. megan mcgrath is live in alexandria right now with an update on that search. megan? >> reporter: well, aaron, we have quite a few police officers in the neighborhood. if you look beside me here, you see the three police cruisers that are parked in front of the home. i saw a short time ago a fifth cruiser drive through the neighborhood. so a big police presence. a man knocked on the door of this home on ridge road drive in alexandria. 59-year-old ruthanne lodato and another woman, the caretaker of lodato's elderly mother, came to the door. that's when the man opened fire. lodato was fatally shot. the other woman was hit in the arm. she's going to be okay. we're told she was able to run to a neighbor's house and get help. at this point police have not

found any connection between the women shot and the gunman. that, of course, rais disturb ing questions of the possibility of this being a random act of violence in the neighborhood. the gunman is described as an elderly white man, balding, with gray hair and a beard. this neighborhood is not known for violence, but in 2013, a well-known transportation planner, ron kirby, was murdered in his home. that was less than a mile from here. no signs of forced entry were found, and the murder has not been solved. the chief of police was asked if there are any connections between the murder here yesterday and the police said there are similarity, but it's too early to tell. aaron, back to you. >> thank you. 6:04. police are waiting to hear if a body found about two hours south of d.c. is that was a missing police reservist. police found what they believe is kevin quick's body in a

remote area of the county which is northwest of richmond. our affiliate there says quick was shot to death. he hasn't been seen since last friday. his suv was found in manassas over the weekend. three siblings are being held without bond in connection with quick's disappearance. a former silver springs school teacher expected in court facing allegations of sexually abusing some of his students. 55-year-old lawrence joins at new hampshire estates elementary school. police believe he abused 14 students including raping one middle school girl. joins pled guilty to possession of child pornography yesterday in baltimore county. he's set to be brought back to montgomery county today. today a bill which could impact higher education in maryland will be read for a third time. the hbcu bill would stop attempts to -- would stop some of the attempts to change the state's obligation when it comes to funding, specifically in black colleges. today the 2014 winter

olympics finally gets an official kickoff. you're looking live at olympic park in sochi, russia. the epicenter of the opening ceremonies. so far the country has been tightlip good details. we're learn -- tightlipped about details. we're learning a few of the details from jim handly at olympic park. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. just a couple. there are still a few secrets out for the big night as we count down. excitement is building here at olympic park. it will have an industrial theme, reflecting the russian revolution. also, it was announced that a gay band will perform at the opening ceremony. the name is tattoo. it has some worldwide name recognition after the women cut a viral video that was seen around the world. also, 3,000 athletes will be taking to the stadium representing 88 countries. volunteers also a big part of the week. tonight, there are more than 20,000 volunteers taking parts this week and next. one is our own kimberly everling. she is from prince william

seymour hoffman are preparing to say their final good-byes today. a private funeral will be held for the actor today inside a church in manhattan. many actors who worked with hofman in film and on stage are expected to attend. a larger public memorial will take place later in the month. hofman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose. his sudden death is part of a growing epidemic of heroin use across the country. >> today local law enforcement agencies will outline a strategy to stop the manufacturing and distribution centers that have sprung up around our region. police are looking to pinpoint where the heroin is being introduced to fentanyl. when heroin is mixed with fentanyl, it creates a potent cocktail that can instantly kill. in maryland, 37 people have overdosed on the combination of heroin and 15 to 20 nil since september. molette green just -- and 15 to 20 fentanyl.

the farl bill inm bill into law. he could also talk about big issues like immigration. the "detroit free press" report he could meet with mayor mike dugan to discuss detroit's bankruptcy. a strain of a stomach virus is being blamed for sickening passengers and crew on a royal caribbean cruise. if forced the "explorer of the sea" to return to port two days early last month. officials say they probably won't be able to pinpoint where the strain came from. it was first detected twees eed ago in australia. drivers saw this warning yesterday, trouble was there was no winter storm watch. the national weather service had to tell the department of transportation to correct the signs. last week a few inches of snow paralyzed atlanta forcing thousands to abandon their cars right on the highways. winter weather not treating atlanta very well. having a rough go.

u.s. intelligence saying terrorists may be trying to smuggle explosives into russia in toothpaste tubes. 6:22. hackers are no longer just targeting your personal information. they'll soon be able to take control of your car. the new homemade gadget can be fitted to any car's control area network. within minutes a hacker could control your lights, locks, steering, and brakes. the gadget costs just $20 and is smaller than an iphone. u.s. researchers say they tested the gadget and hacked into a prius in five minutes. in "news 4 your health" this morning, a new kind of lens for your glasses could help protect your eyes from screen time. doctors say the blue lens protects a person's eye from the blue light emitted by screens on everything from your phone to laptop to your tv. the lens filters out the harmful light as it comes to your eyes, slowing the damaging process. doctors say the best way to fight blue light damage is to put down your phone and your tablet for a while. this story might just be a dream come true for some it couples out there.

this morning, a developing story in alexandria. police trying to find a man who knocked on a ridge road drive home and started shooting. they have no idea why. we're told he killed an alexandria music teacher, ruthanne lodato. he shot a second woman who was with her. megan mcgrath is live to show the presence police have set up in the area to ease neighborhood's fears. right now we have a live look over the district. so far this morning, it is around freezing in washington. many of you are seeing temperatures in the 20s. cold out there. and the ice storm in maryland now. >> 9,000 outages in frederick and montgomery counties. it's telling its customers all electricity will be restored by midnight tonight. bge also telling its customers it plans to have all the customers back on line today. most of its outages were up near baltimore. and right now, shelters and

warming centers open in pennsylvania as power crews work to get the heat running again. this hour, more than 300,000 customers don't have electricity. utility crews hope to have everyone backn line today. some hospitals are using backup generators there. and power companies have called in help from as far away as arkansas and canada. now storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein's going to let us know what to expect in our weather today. tom, good morning you to. good morning. my power's still out. it's like domestic camping, can't wait to get it back. and it has been cold these last several mornings. those homes without power, they're getting cold. down into the 40s and 50s many of the homes. students at bus stops this morning, it's cold. temperatures right now, around the metro area, in the mid 20s. it will be near 30 by about 8:30 or so. so wear your warm coat, gloves, mittens, and a got hood. bright sunshine, sunrise at 7:08. near 20 degrees many of the rural areas now. i think much of the region should be into the upper 20s, near 30 at 8:00. partly cloudy at noontime. into the mid 30s.

down cars here, as well. so look out for debris and keep your speeds down. police are on the scene. fire department, as well. and i expect we are waiting on a tow truck in the area. the other thing that i'm tracking, i-66, no major delays just yet. this is eastbound at fairfax county parkway. aaron, here's the drive time. it's not bad. 11 minutes to the capital beltway. i'm back in ten. >> all right. thank you. 6:31 now. a northeast washington family says they haven't decided whether they will sue the district and the fire department in the wake of their father's death. last month, 77-year-old medrick mills went in to cardiac arrest outside the engine 26 fire station in northeast. mills was denied assistance by a rookie firefighter who claims her supervisor told her she couldn't help. last night, the family held a vigil in front of the station to ask for change. >> we ask mr. gray, mr. gray, mr. gray, mayor gray, let this not go, let this not go unpunished. >> d.c. fire chief ellerbee told our mark seagraves the lieutenant that denied mills

care would be held accountable. news4 has since learned that lieutenant applied for retirement after being given desk duty. the monthly jobs report could give us an idea of how the economy is doing when it is released in the coming hours. it comes a day after a move by republicans that democrats claim will make the life difficult for those still struggling to find work. news4's melissa mollet is live on capitol hill now with more on what this means for you. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we expect to see two things when this comes out in about two hours now. an increase in hiring numbers and fewer unemployment claims. good news pretty much all around. the report, though, comes as long-term jobless benefits are still on hold for more than a million americans. the latest democratic plan just one vote shy of passing in the senate thursday. republicans blocking that proposal. in the meantime, worry about the overall economy. today's report will show retailers suffered a sharp slowdown because of the recent cold snap. back to you. >> all right. messa mollet live on capitol hill for us.

thank you. 6:33 the time. today in northeast washington, the mayor and police chief will be on hand to see the beginning of a schoolhouse transformed into a police station. today construction crews will start to turn the vacant merit middle school into a new police station complete with a gym and a community room. the new station will be near hayes and 51st streets in northeast. the redskins will be in annapolis today hoping to convince lawmakers to let the team hold 50/50 raffles at games. these raffles would benefit the redskins' charitable foundation. because raffles fall under maryland's gaming laws, the team needs permission from state lawmakers. the redskins also want the amount they can raise during the raffle to be bumped up. right now state law only allows $300 in prize money to be given out. and there aren't any station closures on metro this weekend. you will still have to worry about delays maybe on the red line. you can expect trains to arrive every 12 to 24 minutes. and on the blue and orange lines, trains will run every 16 minutes. it is now 6:34.

a centuries' old virginia landmark has a new owner this morning. natural bridge in the shenandoah belongs to the virginia conservation legacy fund. the group paid its private owner $8.6 million for the 1,500 acres of property that includes a 90-foot-long limestone bridge, hotel, and cabins. natural bridge was once owned by thomas jefferson and will ultimately become part of the state park system. beautiful pictures there. you can now learn more about the u.s. history through music. this week the library of congress opened its digital collection of music to the public. it's called the "songs of america." the collection includes 80,000 items of recordings, sheet music, and essays. you can search by time period, location, format. one piece includes the first music textbook published in colonial america in 1744. >> we all knew it was coming. get ready to pay more for gas. how much more tell cost in the
