good afternoon. i'm barbara harrison. it's friday, february 7th, 2014. first, breaking news. >> three people have been arrested and charged with capital murder in death of a police officer. these three people were all arrested we believe today. they have been charged according to arrest warrants with capital murder. police say they murdered quick during an abduction between monday and wednesday of this week. we reported earlier this week that mr. quick had not been seen since last friday in the charlottesville area, not far from wainsboro. his car was stolen. since yesterday when a body

turned up in virginia we're learning that the three people have been arrested in the case and that they will appear in court again on monday. state police do plan to hold a news conference this afternoon. we'll be monitoring that and bring you new information. we'll have the latest on our website at nbcwashington.com. that's the latest from the live desk. right now, a manhunt is underway for a man who shot and killed a music teacher on her doorstep. police have been searching for her killer for almost 4 hours. we're getting brand new reaction to this shocking crime. megan mcgrath is following this story for us. >> reporter: you can see police are maintaining control of the house. it's still considered an active crime scene. you can see the people have stopped by this morning and dropped off flowers. some of ruthanne's students have left their music books here. the gunman is still on the

loose. >> hello, everybody. so glad to see you. >> reporter: it's the song that ruthanne lodato used to start all her classes. >> we stopped at the coffee shop this morning to have coffee with some friends and couple of us were singing under our breath because that's how we started the day with her. >> reporter: one of her students left his music book on the sidewalk in front of her home. the house is still surrounded by police tape as is the front door where the deadly shooting happened. >> she was just a really nice, sweet woman. she was just nice. it's just so sad. >> reporter: it was 11:30 in the morning. a man knocked on her front door. lodato and another woman, the caretaker of her elderly mother, answered the door. the man opened fire. ruthanne lodato was fatally shot. >> when you find out it it was someone you knew, it's a scary

time for the kids. >> reporter: a scary time for the adults too. police have found no connection between the gunmen and two women begging the question could this be a random crime? >> i'm sure a lot of people are thinking about not answering their doors given what happened. as i said, it it's a great neighborhood, great people here, beautiful neighborhood. people are pretty shocked. >> reporter: police are looking into possible connections between this murder and the the murder of ron kirby, less than a mile from here. kirby, a well known regional traffic planner, was shot to death in his home in 2013. there were no signs of forced entry, no suspect. as police continue with their investigation, parents struggle to explain to their children how something so terrible could happen to their music teacher. >> have to be realistic and say every now and then lst an odd ball thing that happens and can't explain it. >> reporter: the second woman

who was shot, she was hit in the skparm we're told she's going to be okay. she was able to go to a neighbor's house and get help. as for the gunman, he's described as an elderly white male. he's balding with gray hair and a beard. reporting live, megan mcgrath, news 4. fire crews are investigating what may have caused an overnight fire in northeast d.c. flames damaged the building on lincoln road northeast not far from rhode island avenue. no one was hurt. the doors of a popular grocery store in northwest washington will not be open today. the safeway on piney branch avenue shut down last night after inspectors found evidence of mice. richard jordan has more on what's happening will today as they keep the doors closed so people will not be infected by anything that mice might have brought in. >> reporter: this is the safeway on georgia avenue.

right now they are waiting on health inspectors to come back out and take u another look. they say they have already addressed all the issues. they have had exterminators and a cleaning crew. shoppers were turned away. they closed the store after they found evidence of mice. >> it's sickening. i had no clue. i have been coming here since the store opened. >> reporter: the violation notice posted right on the glass doors. william hudson was at the store right before it closed. employees told him about the rodent problem. >> contamination of vermin or whatever. rats or whatever. >> reporter: it makes some people cringe. shoppers say they expect more from the grocery store. >> i thought that your local grocery store would have better hygiene and things like that. i expect from that from the carry out, not the grocery

store. >> reporter: for some shoppers there's no going back now. >> i'm going to my giant. i'm done. >> reporter: hudson says he will be backed. he managed to make light of the situation. >> i got vermin here on ninth street. >> reporter: there's not a lot of other people who find this funny. safeway has not zeed complaints of customers saying they found evidence of mice in any of the products or food. still some people say they are going to take an extra look. reporting in northwest washington, richard jordan, news 4. a former music teacher could find himself in front of a judge for a second day in a row. lawrence jones is expected to be transported back from baltimore. once he's back in montgomery county, he's accused of sexually abusing 14 children including raping a girl in middle school. yesterday the former teacher at new hampshire estates elementary school e pleaded guilty to

possession of child pornography in a baltimore court. students and staff at fairfax public schools are wearing black today to mourn the loss of two langley high school students. two 17-year-olds were found dead. police don't suspect foul play and don't believe the deaths are connected. team 4 is tracking another chance of winter weather. taking a look outside, we have the sun out there right now. but this view will look a lot different just as we head into the weekend. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with this forecast for midday. >> it was very cold this morning. we were near 20 degrees in the upper teens. as we look at temperatures, we're well above freezing in washington. it's already in the upper 30s. prince georges, generally in the mid- to upper 30s as well. getting above freezing, still

virginia republicans are looking into one of the governor's recent appointees. republicans believe he sold the chairmanship of the alcoholic beverage control board to long time gop supporter boyd marcus. republicans requested an investigation into the appointment, but that request was turned down by the attorney general. this comes after a report claiming marcus was made $140,000 for work on mccullough's campaign. right now, president obama is on a quick trip outside of washington. just a few minutes ago, he tooa.

he will sign the farm bill into law. the president could talk about other issues like immigration. the detroit free press reports the president could also meet with detroit's new mayor to discuss the city's bankruptcy. city leaders in atlanta are apologizing this morning after drivers saw this warning about a winter stormatchth to work yesterday. the problem was there wasn't a winter storm warning after all. the national weather service had to tell the atlanta department of transportation to correct those signs. it was just last week that a few inches of snow paralyzed atlanta forcing thousands to abandoned their cars right on the highways. and you noticed coordinated attire this friday. and people everywhere are wearing red today. it's go red for women today to draw attention to heart disease. it's the number one killer of women in case you didn't know that.

storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is wearing red today for the same reason. >> absolutely. it's so important to eat well and exercise regularly. a lot of our viewers are on their treadmills and watch us before they head out and go running. it it's such a great way to stay in shape. we have had some good weather for that. no snow. i talked about snow and freezing rain when i visited this school in prince georges county earlier this week. the community school in college park. they have already had a unit on weather. had a terrific time talking to them. they asked some great questions. i want to thank the science teacher there for the invitation to visit the friends community school prince georges county in college park. we're going to have some breaks in the clouds starting at 6:59. watch for a very light spot of light moving swiftly through the sky u. it's only going to take three minutes and it will be fading away.

it gets into the northeastern sky. it's only about 3 minutes long. might be some breaks in the clouds. this is a dramatic fphoto released this morning by nasa. this is the earth in the sky of mars. this is a view from. the mars curiosity rover of the earth itself in the evening sky. like we can see venus. on mars you can see earth in the evening sky. right now reagan national is at 39 degrees. got a westerly breeze and lots of sunshine. a few high clouds drifting in this afternoon. temperatures now above freezing to near 40 degrees right in the metro area. mid-30s farther north and west. it it will be above freezing where all the icing occurred the last couple days. some of the ice is going to come out of the trees. near 40 this afternoon. and south and east should be in

the low to mid-40s. dropping back into the 30s this evening. timing on that snow, it does look like on saturday morning around 11:00 in the morning, we'll begin to see some snow advancing off to the north. mainly coming through the shenandoah valley. an inch or less is likely by the time we get into the afternoon hours. any accumulation is going to be shenandoah valley and into the mountains. all of it ending, i think, by around 4:00 in the afternoon. then anoer chance of snow coming in on sunday. maybe sunday evening into monday. about a 30% chance of that. very light snow. before then, partly sunny sunday. and any snow monday does look like it will be ending monday afternoon. then a break on tuesday. then we might get some more snow. could be a bit of a potent storm in the form of some snow maybe changing to rain. then it's back to some snow again on thursday. so a bit of a wintery mix wednesday into thursday this coming week.
