is. so it's on the right side of the roadway blocking the right lane and the right shoulder lane. heads up there. another thing i'm tracking, broken down car. so beltway, inner loop of the beltway just before you get to connecticut avenue, you're going to see the left lane blocked by a broken down car there. outer loop, nice and clear. nice folks taking the rails this morning, i have your commute coming up in ten minutes, as well. we'll look at d.c. cameras and head to southeast. >> all right. thank you. 5:01. you should have an easier time getting around loudoun county this morning. richard jordan's been driving through the area. he joins us live now from the countryside community. richard? >> reporter: yeah, getting on the roads and getting around shouldn't be a problem. but you know, what might be tough is getting into your car. a lot of people took the advice we were giving them yesterday and stayed off the roads, stayed home. this is what happens when you parked on the street. you had the plow trucks moving through, then your car is basically stuck there, covered with the leftover snow that was left behind. now if you think this is bad,

you ain't seen nothing yet. you got to check out this car over here. it is completely covered. hopefully whoever own this car has a sweetheart who on this valentine's day wants to win extra points and will dig them out of this mess before they get out here. this is going to be a -- a tough traffic here to get there car out of this situation and get it clear from here. now let's talk about the road conditions, there is cromwell, one of the side streets, in pretty good shape. you can tell the plows have been through here, laid down salt. this is actually not one of the best trips we've seen. the major roads are clear. i mean, there is not any white, any leftover snow on some of the roads at all here in loudoun county. they are looking pretty good. so once you do get on the roads, especially the major roadways, the highways, you're not going to have a lot of issues. you will have problems on the side streets getting around there. and really the tough part is going to be getting some of the cars free again. reporting live in loudoun

county, richard jordan, news4. now 5:02. right now metro is up and running after the huge storm a few minutes ago. metro bus lifted its suspension for the first time since last night. buses will run limited service which means you won't be able to catch a bus on many side streets. metrorail also started running a day -- for the day a few minutes ago. trains are expected to run on a normal schedule. metro access service will be restored starting at noon today. even even though schools are closed and the government is on a two-hour delay, you might still have to move your car. d.c. is enforcing morning rush hour parking restrictions. that is 7:00 to 9:30 this morning. if you are caught parked in a rush hour zone, could be fined $100 and your car could be towed. you can get the latest school closings and see the latest forecast any time, anywhere you are. you can also watch our show streaming live. download the "news4 today" app to your iphone. search ""news4 today"" in the app store.

to another major story this morning. same-sex couples in virginia may be a step closer to being able to get married. our northern virginia bureau reporter david culver was first to report last night that a federal judge ruled virginia's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. she said the lesbian couple challenging virginia's ban "suffer humiliation and discriminatory treatment on the basis of their sexual orientation." she issued a stay of her order while it's appealed. we are now is a week into looking live at the russia. mountain cluster this morning where a lot of athletes will have to worry about more than just their competitors today. spring-like temperatures at the winter games are causing some headaches for everyone except the visitors. news4's jim handly joins us now live from olympic park with more on the weather worries. jim, i know you're not complaining about the warm weather. but big troubles for the athletes there. >> reporter: it has been. you may want to cover your ears when i mention this temperature.

we almost made it to 70 in sochi yesterday. at no point today at any mountain cluster will it even come close to freezing. the motto is how cool is yours, this week not cool enough. this is some of the scenery visitors are taking in. the weather has pushed up or canceled some events. some athletes don't mind and spectators definitely don't mind. one guy from florida says he feels at home in his shorts and flip-flops. >> i brought shorts and flip-flops thinking i'd wear them around the hotel and just -- i didn't expect to wear them to a hockey game in russia for the olympics. when i saw it was nice, i decided to do it. >> i know the weather here. i was ready for everything, even thunder, whatever can happen. we have great mountains, great

skiing. >> reporter: so far no thunder in sochi. two big names are competing this morning. a shot at medaling. they've got grounds to make up. they're competing now, we're talking about bode miller, ted ligety. they're more than a second behind the leader in the super combined after the downhill portion. they still have the slalom which begins in the 6:00 hour this morning. americans have a couple of other shots to medal today. noelle picas pace is second going into the final two runs. the men's figure skating competition wraps up with the free skate program. american jason brown has the best shot for a medal. he's in sixth place now. when i join you next from sochi live on "news4 today," we'll catch up with the other ashley from virginia, ashley caldwell on, skis. >> looking forward to. thank you very much. we're tracking events and weather on nbcwashington.com.

5:10. the snow has stopped falling, now you just have to dig out. this is northwest washington. you see nebraska avenue there toward the top of the screen. still a lot of snow on this particular road. >> could it soon be covered by more snow. tom kierein shows when more could fall. >> spoiler alert. below freezing, i think we going to get snow saturday morning, beginning perhaps around 9:00, 10:00 this afternoon. the latest timing on that. we have difficulties now developing because of temperatures dropping to near or

below freezing. loudoun county especially they got so much snow. a lot of it melted yesterday, turned to water, now turning to ice. will be melting i think by late morning, by noon, near 40. bright and sunny. by mid-afternoon, the low 40s. a look at how much snow, who's going to get the most, that's coming up in about ten minutes at 5:21. now danella, you're dealing with accidents already, right? i am. and breaking news. i'm tracking a car fire on the wilson bridge. this is as you travel the inner loop of the wilson bridge. local lanes are shut down. you can see through lanes, express lanes getting by. police are rushing to the scene to get details. i'm making calls to find out what is going. on i'm watching and can see that the flames were up. it looks like the fire department has arrived on the scene. the other thing are local roadways. in southeast d.c., here's pennsylvania avenue at alabama avenue. you can see still snow covered. give yourself extra time. i'm back with an update in ten

minutes with the car fire. >> see you then. thank you. some you may be watching on your phone or tablet because you don't have power. about 560 pepco customers are without power. mostly in the district. dominion virginia power has 1,400 outages in northern virginia. just over 300 outages for bge, potomac edison, 250, mostly in montgomery county. and smeco has more than 1,300 without power. most of those folks in charles county. the radaren't the only problem for commuters. the impact the snow is having on commuter rail service and amtrak. now a live look in montgomery county which saw some of the biggest snow totals from the storm. we'll show you how the cleanup effort is going there this hour effort is going there this hour next.

overnight. be careful out there. if you have to drive anywhere today, give yourself plenty of extra time now. the snow-covered side streets are covered in a slushy, icy mess. news4's megan mcgrath is live near the eastern market metro station now in capitol hill with what looks like a pretty messy situation where you are. megan? >> reporter: yeah. i'm actually standing in the middle here of 7th street. you see the plows have gone through. we're seeing the pavement. look at. this look at how icy it is. everything that was on there has frozen overnight. you see the piles of slush on the side of the road. the plows have not been able to plow curb to curb in many areas. there were cars parked along the curb line. the situation we have going on -- take a look. the lanes are not as wide as they normally are. there's two-way traffic on the street. it's going to be a tough squeeze if two cars meet up at the same time because there's so much of the frozen slush on the side of the road. keep that in mind as you make

your way around town. on the side streets, you may have to let somebody go by if the lanes aren't wide enough. very slippery. give yourself extra time to brake. your car may not necessarily want to stop. if you're walking -- and we have seen people leaving their homes and making their way to work -- not all of the sidewalks have been shoveled. lots of ice on the sidewalks. some are even still snow covered at this point. one gentleman just left his house and is going take metro. he says it's pretty icy. >> i went to the grocery store yesterday. it was a rough walk. they've cleared the streets, but the sidewalks are still very icy and a lot of snow. >> reporter: once you get your way to the major roads, though, they are in very good shape. i didn't have any problems getting to work this morning. this is what's going to be your challenge here today. all of the frozen slush. and the lanes that are not quite as wide as they normally are. and you're going to have to dig your car out if you haven't left your house since this all began.

you'll have a mess to clean up. the plows as they went through dumped some of the snow along, in front of the cars. so it's going to take you a while to get out. now there's a two-hour delay for the government. you'll have extra time if you're a government worker. it's going to be a task here this morning. back to you. >> thank you. 5:18. right now police are investigating whether the snowstorm is responsible for the death of a d.c. man. police found a man's body buried under the snow yesterday a few blocks from the anacostia metro station in southeast washington. police have not said how the man died. a vdot worker in loudoun county was also killed yesterday. he was standing behind his salt truck in ashburn and a dump truck hit him. if howard county, three people are dead after shoveling snow. a 57-year-old man from woodstock and 55-year-old man from columbia had to be rushed to the hospital after shoveling. both men went into cardiac arrest. a 45-year-old from columbia also went interest cardiac arrest and

collapsed outside his home after shoveling. if you're depending on a train to get to work today, listen up. amtrak will be up and running for the most part despite yesterday's storm. the keystone line will be moving but on a reduced schedule. acela trains will push through with reduced frequency, as well. amtrak officials will do their best to notify and accommodate anyone who is dealing with an altered travel plan. meantime, marc trains will be operating on their reduced s schedule main three accommodate the government's -- mainly to accommodate the government's two-hour delay. train 880, brunswick line, will hold for 40 minutes leaving at 8:25. penn line train 425 will head out at 9:25 with several additional cars attached to help with the expected passenger load. as for vre, those trains will bebrating on their s -- be operating on their s schedule which means train runs have been canceled but every line will be moving at some point today.

this winter storm has left a mess on roads, parking lots, sidewalks, even places where crews have worked hard to clear snow and ice. derek ward now live with an update on how things look in montgomery county. derek? >> reporter: good morning again. we are at the intersection of east summit and diamond. and i guess this typifies the tale of two, maybe three surfaces. take a look. you see a road -- this is a secondary road. heavily traveled but not a main road. has been treated, and we've seen some spreaders come through here since we've been here. what they're doing now is they're not necessarily plowing butting down salt or sand. something to sort of melt that snow and give you traction. as you see, traffic is moving well. if you look here in the foreground at the sidewalk, there's a paved sidewalk, pretty clear, pretty much clear. this is all ice. this is what pedestrians have to deal with. and we actually caught up with a gentleman who ventured out for the first time since the snow began. today, his challenge is just trying to get to work. >> today is the first morning i'm head back to work.

>> reporter: what was it like getting to the bus stop for you? >> it's not hard. they got everything paved. pretty easy walk. >> reporter: yeah. it is an easy walk once you get to the bus stop. we have seen pedestrians in the street because you got to hop over a big snow bank to get to the sidewalks in a lot of instances. on the other side of the street not necessarily the same deal. again, you've got to watch your speed, watch your distance between cars. and also watch out for pedestrians who are on the roads, as well. we're live in gaithersburg, derek ward, news4. >> thank you. we haven't reached the coldest part of the morning. some of this icing, places that maybe haven't iced yet will have the chance to ice over. >> 5:21. final for weather & traffic on the 1s and meteorologist tom kierein with the forecast. >> that's a good point. it is continuing to drop ever so gradually. the next two or three hours what may be slushy is going to be turning to ice. there's the jefferson memorial under a clear sky. and a big area with an icy threat here this morning.

take a look at this map. that you will area in red, that's where i think we're going to be getting most of the icing. that's where, of course, we got most of the snow yesterday. watch out for your roads, sidewalks, front steps especially. if it looks wet, that is getting icier and icier as the morning progresses. we are going to have this iciness with us maybe through around 8:00, 9:00, then it should begin to melt off. right now we're at or below freezing much of the morning. the weather story, snow returns. when tell happen? here is the timing on that. leading edge of returning snow in this area in the lavender and white and pink. that's going to be 6:00 on saturday morning. i think we'll have that approaching loudoun county out of the panhandle into washington county, northern shenandoah valley. then as we step through our time here, by 9:00 on saturday morning, that snow moves east of the blue ridge, into frederick county, northern loudoun, and gets closer to montgomery county and fairfax county. and i think then it's going to begin to move into the metro area after that between 10:00 and 11:00 in the morning through

2:00 in the afternoon. how much will we get? i think there's a pretty good chance we'll end up with maybe an inch or two in washington, points south and east two to four in the narrow band. some of the higher ridges may get up to six out of this. generally four inches north and south. over the weekend, temperatures above freezing saturday afternoon, more above freezing temperatures this afternoon for valentine's day as well as on sunday and monday, into the 30s each afternoon. the best numbers on the seven-day outlook, 50s tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. danella, you're dealing with issues now, right? >> i am still tracking breaking news, tom. there is on the wilson bridge in the local lanes on the inner loop of the beltway. you see here all the local lanes are blocked. now this is because of a car fire. police and fire department on the scene here. you can get through in the express lanes, but again, this is blocked. i'm still making calls to get more information about that. the other incident i'm tracking is on the beltway, this time the outer loop at branch avenue.

you see here police on the scene of an accident just off to the left shoulder lane. possibly blocking the left lane, as well. the other incident that i'm tracking, tom, they're just coming in. this is always travel route 50 inbound, approaching 410. accident blocking the right side of the roadway. difficult to see, but i am tracking it. folks getting by to the left side of the road. i'm back at 5:31 with another look at the wilson bridge car fire. back to you. >> all right. thank you. let's go to molette green following breaking news at the live desk at 5:24. >> reporter: take a look at this chaotic scene going on right now in indonesia. people are frantically trying to get out of harm's way after a deadly volcanic eruption. this video is just in to our newsroom. just about everyone and everything you can see covered in ash. we've just learned that at least two people are dead, crushed to death when their homes caved in after red-hot jash and -- ash

and rocks spewed down. airports are closed. that's the latest. back to you. >> thank you. take a look at this video. shows the moment a man in colorado was swept under a -- an avalanche. helmet camera shows the snowmobilers traveling along the trail when all of a sudden the avalanche rips him off the snowmobile and buries him under the snow. he was not bury toad deeply apparently and was able to dig -- buried to deeply apparently and was able to dig out the snowmobile, too. in new jersey, people preparing for another round of snow. those in the garden state might pick up an dwoishl to four inches. the first wave of snow brought as much as 14 inches in some places. thousands of people are snowed in. many of whom are without power. kids in new york city seeing little relief from the snow as they didn't get any time off for wintry weather. that didn't stop parents from giving kids a break. new york city public schools reported 56% of kids stayed home on same-sex marriage in virginia.
