storm team 4 radar pretty closely. get ready for more snow. it's moving in overnight. and even though it won't be a lot, it's adding to the headaches for people still recovering from the last storm. >> we have team coverage of the conditions and the cleanup. doug kammerer, how much and when? >> well, the good news here is not a lot, guys. it's going to come early tomorrow morning. already out there on the radar right now, take a look. storm team radar showing exactly what is going on right now across our region. the storm just off to the west. we're starting to see some shower activity, and notice it's in the form of rain right now. we have seen a very mild afternoon with highs into the low 50s. but now we are starting to see some of it change over to snow. back towards the west around frostburg, around garrett county. you can see the whole system making its way our way. this is going to be a monster of a system by this time tomorrow night. but right now it's just getting its act together. and for us, it means a little snow and a winter weather advisory that is in effect. not for d.c. and annapolis for fredericksburg, but it is out to

the west. frederick, martin, winchester, hagerstown, and even a winter storm warning out towards garrett county. i'll update you on exactly who gets what from this storm. another slight chance for snow and a whole big pattern shift. i've got it all in my forecast, coming up. >> thanks, doug. chopper 4 captured this video showing the aftermath of this week's snowstorm. neighborhoods, as you can see, covered in white. the storm did make history. it's one of the top ten storms to hit parts of northern virginia. dulles airport got more than 13 inches of snow. and tonight many people still digging out. the big problem, side roads that have not been touched bay plow yet. jackie bensen continues our team coverage. he is in rockville now. jackie? >> reporter: jim, we're in a shopping center on rockville pike. we want to show you what comes at the end of getting rid of all that snow in the parking lots and on the main streets. it gets piled up like this. these are going to stay here for a while. and tonight we can tell you that some residential streets remain

a challenge. heading down hill in rockville this evening required a steady hand on the steering wheel and a lightfoot on the brakes. large patches of snow that remained on the street started freezing up after the sun went down. well found a car, running but unattended, stuck in the snow. moments later, the driver appeared with a friend who expertly maneuvered the vehicle on its way. in the district, streets in the columbia heights neighborhood were filled with people making their way outdoors for the first time in a couple of days. there were lots of families with children. >> we've been at home just coloring and having fun reading books. and we've been outside in the evening to make a snowman in our yard. >> reporter: man's best friend also enjoyed a snow-free stroll. >> yeah, we got in a bit of a walk today. still trying to navigate being pulled through the ice. but making our best of it. >> reporter: so saturday morning people are going to go out, get to sommer rands they've

neglected for a couple of days. these big snow hills, take notice of them. when you get into the parking lots, the places you're going, you're going to find there are fewer spaces. i can tell you that did lead to some frustration for people. jackie bensen, news4. we're following breaking news. a 4.1 magnitude earthquake has been confirmed in edgefield, south carolina. it happened just about an hour ago. so far no reports of any injuries or damage. but we're told the people from atlanta, georgia to raleigh, north carolina could feel it tremble. back home, investigators are still looking into whether the road conditions played a role in a crash that shut down part of the beltway and sent a woman and ten children to the hospital. chopper 4 flew over the backups around bethesda during the evening rush. a minivan flipped over on the inner loop right near the river road exit. police tell us a child and the woman behind the wheel suffered serious injuries. the pennsylvania turnpike is back to normal now. some people said earlier today it looked like a horror movie

out there. a whole bunch of crashes involving as many as 100 vehicles. the pileup started during the morning rush. stretched for eight miles along the turnpike. at least 30 people were injured. not yet clear what set off the series of accidents, but questions are being raised about the sun glare, the speed and icy conditions. an 8-year-old girl is out of surgery tonight after being shot on her way home in southeast washington. police still haven't arrested anybody, but they do have some leads tonight. dorothy spencer has new information from the victim's family. darcy? >> reporter: doreen, i can tell you, this little girl is a fighter. i talked to her mom tonight. she is right here at children's hospital by her daughter's side. she did go through surgery, and her mom was somewhat relieved tonight. she says she has stabilized. all hopes are she is going to pull through. these photo shows a happy, vibrant 8-year-old be. now that little girl, makayla

darden is fighting for her life. she was hit in the chest by a stray bullet outside her apartment building. >> makayla is going to be okay. god got her. she is going to be all right. >> reporter: tonight police are questioning two people of interest. but no arrest. >> she is a sweet little girl. she don't bother nobody. just a beautiful little baby. >> reporter: it was just after 3:00 in the afternoon when the shots rang out on valley avenue. makayla was hit once. sources say she was not the intended target. >> anybody is a target out here, to me. because you never know, you know what i'm saying? you never know what is going to happen. >> reporter: makayla's grandmother says she was walking home if her aunt's house from one building to the next here at the willard courts complex when she was shot. >> we have no suspects. at the time of the shooting, there was a group of folks running from the scene. >> reporter: the shooting took place within a secured area with an iron fence, a gate and a

guard shack. many wonder how did the shooter get in. >> most of the time the security does nothing but sit in that booth. you're supposed to do walk-arounds. >> reporter: police are reviewing footage from the surveillance cameras in the complex to see if they can identify the gunman. are you thinking about moving? >> definitely. definitely thinking about moving. and i'm going to make that a reality very soon. >> reporter: definitely a lot of concern in that community. at last check, d.c. police saying they are still talking to the persons of interest, as well as witnesses to the shooting. they are hopeful that they'll be able to make an arrest in the case. reporting live from northeast washinon, darcy spencer, news4. >> thank you, darcy. it has been five years now since a woman disappeared from her home in northwest d.c. but her family refuses to give up on getting this case solved. chris? >> reporter: pamela buttner's family is going to hold a vigil tomorrow. it's partly to pray and remember her. but this is less about looking

back and more about renewing their promise to find out how she vanished. >> we just want some closure. if anybody know anything, please contact the police. >> reporter: last year's vigil. they're still no closer to getting closure. pamela was supposed to spend valentine's day with her mom but never showed up. she was an analyst at the epa and had cameras mounted at her home. they captured her going into the house, but not coming out. what they did record was her boyfriend coming and going even after pamela disappeared. police questioned him, searched his house, even searched an area around rock creek park where she liked to jog. nothing, no body, no charges. >> i don't think that anybody should just be forgotten in a situation like this. and i've said it before. it's not just about my sister. it's about everybody that is missing. it's a hard situation to actually live through. >> reporter: without a doubt.

d.c. police say they're still investigating, and this case has not gone cold. but the boyfriend says he had nothing to do with it, and there is no other evidence. the family believes someone killed her and hid the body. that's one of the points they'll be making at saturday's vigil. >> chris lawrence, thank you. virginia governor terry mcauliffe plans to travel to new york next week for his mother's funeral. millie mcauliffe died last night at a nursing home in syracuse. she was also there watching her son's inauguration on tv last month since she had been too weak to travel. millie mcauliffe was 92 years old. new information tonight about a d.c. police officer who is found dead several days after being arrested for child porn. wendy reiger at our live desk now with the autopsy report just released. >> reporter: we're talking about mark washington, who is an officer who is accused of taking naked pictures of girls who were victims of crimes, and that includes women who were victims of domestic violence. tonight the medical examiner confirms that his death was a id

let's look at the timeline of this. it started back on december 1 when washington reportedly coerced a 15-year-old runaway into taking partially nude photos. he said he needed to document her injuries after she returned home. this led to his arrest. police then found hundreds of other photos on his camera. and that includes the photos of domestic violence victims. one week later, he was out on bail, and he was uer house arrest. that's when his body was pulled from the washington channel near hains point. it was one day after that. according to "the washington post," the medical examiner says washington intentionally drowned himself. he was one of three d.c. police officers who were charged with major crimes back in december, and one of dozens who have been arrested in the past five years. and last month, this prompted police chief cathy lanier to call for departmental changes to help crack down on police

after hours of backbreaking work to clear a parking space, some drivers are saving their spots with chairs, parcels, even a baby swing. some people say you have to respect the space. others claim parking is a free-for-all. that's not the only parking problem right now, though. if your car was towed from a snow emergency zone in the district, you probably have to wait until tuesday to pick it up. lots are closed for president's day on monday. storage fees are $20 a day. a car stuck in the snow lands a guy in handcuffs.

michael dennis jr. is accused of robbery. police say he offered to help a guy whose car was stuck on marcy avenue in oxen hill yesterday, but instead of helping him out, he allegedly held up the driver, taking the guy's cell phone and wallet. someone called 911, and when the police arrived, they found dennis in the back seat. he tried to run but was arrested. turning to the winter olympics now. the torch burning bright ahead of a big showdown between team usa and russia. also, doreen? >> a controversy over the state-of-the-art speed skating uniforms. it's got the americans making a big change. jim handly is live in sochi with all the headlines. hi, jim. >> hi, guys. is it revolutionary, or is it a drag? that's the question tonight here in sochi for u.s. speed skaters wearing their new high-tech under armour suits. six events, no medals at all wearing the new mach 39. check it out, folks. the maryland-based company along

with lockheed martin designed the suits with a vent to reduce body heat. but now it's suspected of creating a drag and slowing the racers down. even the world's best, shani davis placed eighth in the 1000 meters this week. now some want to dump the suit all together in favor of their old suit. some argue it's not the suit, it's in the training. under armour tonight tells us the mach 39 is the most scientifically advanced and rigorously tested suit never the olympics, and they will continue to work with u.s. speed skating to make that translate into medals. bottom line, team usa going with their old under armour suits next. they have another chance to compete today in the 1500 meters. also, on the home front, competing today up in the mountains, virginia's own ashley caldwell. check it out. the youngest to compete in vancouver at 16. she came back from a torn acl in her right knee. today the 20-year-old from loudoun county finished with the best score in qualifying, but stumbled on her landing in the first final and failed to

advance. back home she wears her redskins pride on her skis. here it's all about team usa. her parents traveled here to sochi to cheer her on too. today ashley ended up in tenth place to match her performance in vancouver. >> i'm doing my best to realize that i have done three new tricks -- four new tricks since the last olympics, and i'm doing triples. and i'm really excited to be here and proud to represent my country. >> reporter: now to the biggest event this week. we're talking about hockey, folks. team russia and ove taking on john carlson and team usa. here is what they had to say. >> what is going to be like to go up against somebody you play on the same team with back here? >> it's going to be strange. but it's olympic. and you -- you -- i don't have friends out there on the ice. >> seeing him among the other team, it's obviously something i have never done that will add to

president obama is in california on business. >> aww! happy valentine's day. >> i heard he is going to stay an extra day for golf too. he must have done something right previously to get the pass. >> she had all those big parties for her 50th birthday. she is good to go. so what do you mean more snow after we were in the 50s today? >> not just the 50s. it was the mid-50s. it was gorgeous out there. and that got rid of a snow that we had out there. but when you have more than a foot, it takes a little while. but look at this. this is a great shot, isn't it? this was all day down at the capitol today. look at how the snow starts to melt, making puddle after puddle. this evening we'll see the puddles refreeze just a little bit. but not with temperatures like this. this is another great one down right by the white house. pretty cool stuff. right now currently 43 degrees. so we are seeing some refreezing. but that's actually the snow just refreezing itself. it's not from the air temperature. we're well above freezing with winds. they are calm. now, what we are also seeing is

the cloud cor. don't worry about it. i'll get it. 37 in winchester. 37 at leesburg. 34 down toward huntingtown. some areas close to that freezing mark. not too worried about the refreeze overnight. storm team radar showing because of the warmer air we have some rain coming through. winchester and warrenton, down towards the fredericksburg area. this rain will try to move in. as the rain falls, it will cool the atmosphere and the snow will start to fall. start as rain, moved over to snow in portions of west virginia. this storm right now is a railroad weak storm. but once it moves out to the atlantic, it's going to gain a ton of moisture and energy. it's going to become a blizzard up by boston. but for us, it's just a little bitty storm. enough that we do have a weather winter advisory in effect for parts of the area. no d.c., not indianapolis. but back towards the west around martinsburg, towards cumberland and winchester we do have the winter weather advisory. the reason is we could see some minor accumulation there's.

here we go. seeing the snow back toward the west. the rain showers around 4:00, 5:00 tomorrow morning. but watch what happens during the day. we see the colder air move in. and by 10:00, 10:30, snow across much of the area, especially northern virginia and through maryland and the panhandle of west virginia. down south, this may start out as some rain for you. you may get over to some shower activity as far as know was concerned. but i wouldn't expect much down towards the south and east. tomorrow afternoon, it just gets windy, and it gets cold again. temperatures in the 30s. windchills in the 20s. you've been through this before. now forecast, a coating to an inch from d.c. to the south. that's really pushing it. 1 to 2 inches around leesburg, frederick, around warrenton area. once again i'm thinking the lower end of this. back towards the north and west, this is the area i think could see the most, and it's 2 to 4. anything that falls of course will stick to the snow. however, i think the roadways might just be okay. that's what this graphic says. some refreezing overnight, but not too bad. snow moves in, mostly like, and main kroese roads should be okay. the highways are going to be

there. they did get ahold of it, though. everyone got a laugh. it was a little scary there at first. bradley beal will participate in the three-point shoot-out tomorrow night. one of those new trophies. to beal will participate in the three-point shoot-out tomorrow night. also john wall will be in the dunk contest as well. let's talk some olympics now. bode miller was one of the few olympic athletes that no one expected to leave sochi empty handed. but so far it's been disappointment for the 36-year-old as he failed to medal once again today. not a lot of love for the combined slalom course for miller. he started off rocky. he came out of the gates. really couldn't execute some of his first few turns as sharply as he wanted to. he told "the washington post" afterwards, quote, i was pretty lousy. bode ended up in sixth place. he was the highest placing american, less than a second from earning the medal. to figure skating, men's free skate. yuzuru hanyu of japan led the way coming in, but he suffered two tough falls during the free

skate. hanyu set the record straight in the short program. tonight a disappointing performance that left the door open for american jason brown. he tried to move into medal contention, but brown also fell. he finished in ninth place. mistakes didn't cost him too much. he won japan's first gold medal in men's figure skating. one more olympic note for you. team usa faces russia tomorrow morning at 7:30 on nbc sports network. all right. in college basketball, you cannot make up a big-time rivalry game, because the great ones are always built over time. maryland versus duke. tomorrow is the last regular season meeting between the two programs as conference opponents. coach understands exactly what this game to maryland means. >> two great programs. gary had it rolling and coach k had it rolling. teams were winning national championships and playing in
