now at 11:00 a toddler rushed to the hospital in a fire truck because an ambulance was too far away. it's a story you'll see only on news 4. plus a notorious killer gunned down inside a prison. the dramatic shoot out behind bars. the nba's first openly gay athlete signs a deal. i'm erica gonzalez. chris lawrence has the night after. dc emergency responders were forced to take a child to the hospital in a fire truck because the closest ambulance was several miles away. darcy spencer joins us live with

a story you'll see only on news 4. darcy? >> reporter: erica, the closest ambulance was actually seven miles away, and the firefighters and paramedics who transported that child in the fire truck right here to united medical center in southeast are being praised for actions. they say it probably saved the child's live. critics are asking why wasn't there an ambulance closer by? sources tell news 4 it was a dc fire truck from company 33 in washington that transported a toddler having seizures to the hospital about 5:00 friday afternoon, not an ambulance. that's because the closest ambulance was switeven miles aw returning from the hospital. the paramedic made the decision to take the child to united medical center on the truck, whether than wait for the ambulance to drive across town and wait in traffic. that decision being prized by the fire chief. >> a good idea. the right decision to make and a

good decision for the patient. >> reporter: critics say it's a patient the paramedics should not have to make, that it points to a broken system because there are not enough ambulances on the streets of the nation's capitol. >> we're looking at increasing our ambulance capacity in the city. we know we have approximately 60 ambulances available for service. we put 39 units on the street every day and looking at maybe putting 45 on the street. >> reporter: tommy wells, candidate for mayor, praised the firefighters actions. >> i don't know how long it would have taken for the firefighters to get there. they did the right thing and used their judgment and stepped forward and made a decision that seems to have saved this child's life. >> reporter: he's concerned about the availability of ambulances, especially east of the river where this has happened before when an ambulance was too far away. >> ambulance deployment is a concern i have in being sure we have enough ambulances east of the river is a greater concern.

>> reporter: council member wells plans to have a hearing tomorrow bringing fire department leadership over the matter where a man was allowed to die across the street from a fire station and never received help. this is the latest controversy affecting the d.c. fire department. well, this isn't the first time something like this happened. last year there were three incidents that called into question the response times of d.c. ambulances. in january of '13 a man died after waiting 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive in southeast. two months later, a police officer waited almost 20 minutes. d.c. had to call prince george's county and days after that, a man who suffered a stroke was taken to the hospital via fire truck because the ambulance was taking too long. now to a developing story in old town alexandria, police say a man was shot off north pain a

few hours ago. we're told he was shot in the chest, and he was rushed to the hospital in stable condition. right now detectives are canvassing the scene for clues. the shooting comes a few weeks after the murder of a popular music teeper who was killed after answering a knock at her door. her case has not been solved, but police say at this point, they do not believe the crimes are connected. also developing tonight in southeast d.c., two people shot off 13th street and alabama avenue. this is right near the congress heights metro station, and we've put in a few calls to police and still waiting to get details about what led up to the shooting. so far, no arrests but alabama avenue is shut down as crews continue to investigate that scene. in prince george's county, pictures of the victims in a triple murder are circulating around capitol heights. police passed out that flier that you saw there near the scene today, and we learned that two of the victims, mason and

stacy white worked together at a retail store in laurel. they were found shot to death last night in an apartment belonging to mason's friend who was also killed. there is a $25,000 reward for information in this case. all right. now we go to the weather. storm team 4 radar showing rain roshing over parts of the region, but this only tells half of the story. amelia segal is tracking the rain and the end to the amazing temperatures we've had, right, amelia? >> yes. unfortunately, erica, as we head back to work, much colder air. temperatures in west virginia already in the low 30s, and that's making its way into our area overnight. the rain bringing in this colder air, mainly now to the north and west of washington. rain arrives in washington around midnight, 1:00 a.m., everybody is dry by 4:00 a.m.

along 270 and 70 right now seeing this rain, but again, it's gone by 4:00 a.m. so that morning commute will be okay. temperatures now are in the 40s. tomorrow morning we're in the 30s. i'll have more on this cold weather, and if there is any snow in the forecast for the workweek coming up in about ten minutes, erica. >> thanks, amelia. the man behind a notorious crime has been shot and killed inside an israelly prison. he was serving time for murdering and dismembering a teenager back in 1997. he fled the u.s. but was caught and prosecuted in israel. the case sparked an international extradition battle, but police say he stole a weapon, shot three guards and barricaded himself inside the prison. local leaders say the whole ordeal could have been avoided. >> i think if we had been able to sort of keep him here, hopefully, none of this would have happened.

>> officials in israel say two of the prison guards shot were seriously injured. as dawn breaks in the ukraine, there are new developments. an arrest warrant is out for president who fled the capitol over the weekend after months of protest to strengthen ties with russia. tonight ukraine's parliament voted to make the speaker the country's interim president. protests have taken a more peaceful

tonight. jason pew has more tonight. >> thanks, erica. history was made tonight in the nba. jason collins becoming the first openly gay athlete to play in the league after signing a ten-day contract with the brooklyn mets. tonight collins suited up as they took on the lakers. he's happy to be back on an nbc roster but more concerned about the games and not his personal story. >> right now i'm focused on trying to learn the plays, trying to learn the coverages, the game plan assignment. i don't have time to really think about history right now. for me, the pressure is, you know, playing in the nba game tonight and last time i played an nba game was last april. i think that's enough pressure right there. >> in the second quarter of the mets laker's game tonight, this was that historic molt. jason collins checking into the game for brooklyn. you can see fans at the staples center were on their feet.

more than 20 dogs are getting new homes in march land la tonight. they are some of the 75 animals rescued from an alleged puppy mill tennessee, thanks to animal rescue core that performed the

rescue and partnered with facilities like the humane society. mutts matter rescue and dogs excel rescue anyone wishing to foster or adopt one of these dogs should contact the shelters and rescue groups directly. still in word on what sparked a house fire in prince george's county. this is video from the scene of springfield road in glendale this afternoon and we're told the fire started in the attic, wound up burning a hole through the roof of the home. no one was hurt but the family is displaced. the owner of the legal seafoods restaurant chain says all restaurants will undergo safety checks. this is in the wake of a deadly carbon monoxide leak that killed a restaurant manager in long island new york last night. fire officials say a faulty water heater pipe was to blame for the leak, which also sent more than two dozen people to the hospital. the pipe will have to be repaired before the restaurant can reopen, of course. it is being called a public health crisis, young women

assaulted, even murdered by their boyfriends so tonight some montgomery high school students took part in a conference on teen dating abuse and jackie benson was one of the judges of a public service announcement campaign called respect montgomery. >> reporter: this public service announcement was made by varsity football players at spring brooke high school in silver spring. why student athletes? they can often help mold opinions and attitudes. they were encouraged to par participate by their coach. ray rice was charged with assault and domestic abuse against his fiancee. the sports' community realizes stemming bad behavior by college and professional athletes begins in high school. >> it just teaches us how to be like men, how to treat people the way we want to be treated, how to just treat people with fairness, you know, just be better people in the community.

cold and snow. unfortunately, for your workweek, we return to cold temperatures but just some snow chances. right now i'm tracking rain on storm team 4 radar. you can download the weather app and get the weather on your sport phone. rain moves through the district from about midnight until 2:00, maybe 3:00 a.m. at the latest. areas far north, you could see maybe a little bit of wet snow mixing in, but right now storm team 4 radar really not indicating that. this rain extending back trying to make its way into prince william county, just starting to move through. those of you in southern maryland will be the last to hang onto the rain. by the time the morning commute rolls on, it will be out of here with future weather, rain moving through washington and prince george's county around midnight until 2:00 a.m. and then after that, skies clear, winds will continue to pick up overnight tonight. it's going to be a breezy day

tomorrow, not just breezy but chilly, as well, and in fact for the entire week on into next weekend, our high temperatures remain below average. at this point, our high typically about 50 degrees. highs this week will be in the 30s and low 40s. the good news, though, just a chance of some light snow this week. we're not looking at any major snowstorms. 48 is the temperature in washington right now. the winds picking up out of the north at about 16 miles an hour. it's breezy out there now and will continue to be breezy for monday. keep that in mind so it will feel colder than it is. at least we'llave mostly sunny skies. so starting off your day tomorrow, a rude awakening. 35 at 7:00 a.m. 40 by 10:00 a.m. and mid 40s for the afternoon and 46 will be the high tomorrow during the evening hours and temperatures around 40 degrees. for tuesday, our temperare a hi

tuesday of only 39 degrees. we could see some light snow, maybe even just flurries or sprinkles around tueay afternoon, not really amounting to much. a better chance, though, that we'll see some snow on wednesday, otherwise cold, a high temperature of only 35 degrees. and if we do see snow, it's going to happen during the morning and the midday hours and right now only minor amounts are possible. about two inches or less with that snow. notice with future weather, it's gone. by the afternoon and evening hours. thursday and friday, erica, we're dry. plenty of sun. look at those highs in the upper 30s, still there is that average of 50. mark 1st, it's next saturday. can you believe it? it's going to start off chilly with rain and wet snow mixing in. >> we're ready for spring. >> yes. >> thanks, amelia. big news for folks interested in running for the marine corps marathon. the registry opened today and
