monday morning. after a beautiful weekend, we're tracking a change in the forecast. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is keeping a close eye on our dropping temperatures. tom? as you get your children ready for school, tell them they need their winter coats, gloves, and hat again. it is going to be in the 30s through much of the morning. we'll have lot of sunshine, sun rises at 6:48. that strong late february sun not going to warm things much today. we'll have a blustery wind continuing to bring in the chill on this chilly monday. afternoon highs reaching the mid 40s. metro area, prince george's county, fairfax county in the district, much of montgomery county just near 40 for the high this afternoon. that's ten degrees colder than the average high this time of year. highs only in the 30s shenandoah valley, much of western maryland, panhandle of west virginia. southern maryland, eastern shore, northern neck, they may be making to t to the upper 40s. fredericksburg to warrenton, culpeper, maybe near 50 degrees not the colder trend continue here for the week ahead. average highs are near 50.

each day we'll be colder than average. the coldest days, wednesday and again on friday. we will likely get snow on wednesday. and we could get an inch or two in the morning on wednesday. that will mess up the commute. we don't have any weather causing commute problems this morning s. that right? that's right. so far the weather is behaving nicely for our commute. in fact, traveling around the beltway, no delays there. we're going to shoot out to loudoun county. tom, right now i'm watching traffic lights, they're malfunctioning. they're flashing. if you're traveling along loudoun county parkway, treat it as a four-way stop. this is at russell branch parkway. now live look at chopper 4 on i-270. this is for folks traveling southbound near montgomery village avenue. as you make the commute this morning between germantown heading through rockville, normal volume here, no big delays, northbound absolutely clear. on 270, the usual slowdowns are as you make your way between frederick and heading toward 109. here's a live look at new york avenue as you make your way toward bladensburg road.

lanes are open, normal volume. back in ten minutes, we'll head to route 50 in maryland. >> see you then. thank you. 6:02 the time. now to a story you'll see only on news4. sources tell us a fire truck was forced to take a toddler to the hospital because an ambulance wasn't nearby. the toddler was having a seizure around 5:00 friday night when paramedics decided not to wait for the ambulance which was seven miles away. chief kenneth ellerbee says it was the right decision. >> good idea. it was a very -- it was the right decision to make, and it was a good decision for the patient. >> ellerbee says he is looking at increasing the number of ambulances on the street every day from 39 to 45. the fire department will have more questions to answer this afternoon when a hearing is held on some high-profile mishaps. >> we'll be there as council members try to get to the botto of communication problems among first responders that have been connected to several deaths. news4's melissa mollet live outside the wilson building with more on what we expect from the hearing today. melissa?

>> reporter: a lot of questions, a lot of concerns. that hearing starts at 2:00 this afternoon. we know, though, that the hearing will mostly be focused around the recent death of 77-year-old medrick mills. you remember he might -- you might remember, i should say, highway died across the street from a firehouse after five firefighters failed to help him as he was having a heart attack. council member tommy wells will head the hearing on police, fire, and 911. we know mills' son will testify along with the mother of a man who died in a similar situation four years ago and the brother of a man who died last month. the family says a district police officer waved off an ambulance coming to help him. he died a few hours later. also as you mentioned, lots of recent complaints about ambulance response times and, of course, availability. live in northwest washington, melissa mollet, news4. back to you. >> thank you. 6:03. this morning, police are trying to figure out who shot a man and why. this was in northern virginia. it happened about -- happened last night near north payne and

width streets in old town alexandria. police found the man with a gunshot wound to the chest. he was rushed to the hospital in stable condition. officers say this shooting has no connection to the recent murder of music teacher ruthanne lodato. the pictures of three murder victims are being circulated in capitol heights today. look at the flyer here that prince george's county police are passing out. weldon mason, stacey wyeth, and ortiz ola were shot to death saturday night. the three worked together at a retail store in laurel. police are offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. 6:04. today a former juror will be back in court facing contempt for not disclosing her religious beliefs in the case surrounding a police officer's death. kavon neil was on trial for motor vehicle manslaughter in the 2012 death of prince george's county police officer adrian morris. in the middle of deliberations, the juror e-mailed the judge saying she was a jehovah's witness and that it was against her religion to judge others.

the judge ruled a mistrial. right now we're working to find out what caused a fire to rip through an attic at a home in glendale. this is video from the scene off springfield road in prince george's county yesterday. firefighters tell news4 the fire started in the attic and quickly spread to the roof. the family will have to stay somewhere else for a while. today the naacp is looking to help those who have lost their homes in maryland because of foreclosure. the group is hosting a rally to call for a six-month freeze on foreclosures. the group says lawmakers need to change state policy. maryland is third in the nation for foreclosure rates. that rally begins at 4:30 this afternoon at the state house in annapolis. this video has parents in disbelief this morning. a principal dragging a kindergarten student down the hallway. the punishment she received and why some say it doesn't go far enough. plus, coughing co-workers. the reason many people say they go to work even when they're sick. and we're in for a few cold days.

welcome back. at 6:09, in "news 4 your health," having healthy, pearly whites could help you prevent arthritis. researchers at the university of louisville school of dentistry found the bacteria causing gum disease also shows up in the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis. brushing two times a day can also help people who already have arthritis by stopping the bacteria from acting like a steroid for the disease. it seems one in four people admit to working when they're sick. a study found that most people go to work while they're sick because they can't afford to miss a day, at least that's what they say. the study found co-workers didn't mind.

high school students, students made public service announcements about domestic violence. students we spoke to said they enjoyed the message behind the conference and making those psas. >> learning how to have a healthy relationship has to start when you're younger. when you're in high school, ready for college, it's important. >> this year's conference focused on cyber-abuse. students learned that threats made over the internet are just as real as those made in person. the united states could have its smallest army since world war ii under defense secretary chuck hagel's budget. he'll release it today. it would reduce the teamer between 440 -- reduce the army to between 450,000 and 450,000 members. it happen 570,000 after september 11. the budget also eliminates the entire fleet of air force a-10 attack aircraft. this should tell you how hagel sees the future of national defense. funding won't be cut for special ops or cyber-warfare. news4's molette green is >> we're keeping track of major

problems that make sochi look pretty good right now. rio de janeiro is set to host the world cup this summer. then the summer olympics just two years later. a bay the city plans to use for sailing events is pollutesed with sewage. some of the -- polluted with sewage. some of the poorest people have been evictsed to build venues. the olympic committee says the city will need constant supervision in order to get everything ready by 2016. we are getting a rare view this morning of what it is like for a plane to get hit by a bird mid flight. check out the video again in slow motion here. right there. incredible to see. florida pilot rob weber had a camera rolling in his small plane when a bird came crashing into the windshield. weber said he didn't even see the bird and that it seemed like the windshield just exploded before his eyes as he was flying 170 miles per hour. he says at that point pilot training and some steady hands

the school board's decision allowed the downtown add just one day to end the year, but it is a very unpopular compromise. one parent started a petition on change.org calling on the county to give back the recess time. it is nearly 1,500 -- it has nearly 1,500 signatures. a local school district pushing for civility on social media. the threatening tweet that sparked this idea. a weakness first found in iphones now in mac computer. it could leave your e-mail and facebook accounts wade open for hackers. the fix on its way to protect your information. and children on the playground will need their winter coats today. off to a cold start. we're only in the 30s to near 40 degrees. >> update your phone.
