what led up to that accident. shomari stone is on the scene. we'll hear from him in just a few minutes. first, though, a winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of our area tonight. >> there is more snow moving in, and it's coming at the worst possible time, the morning rush could be a real mess. let's go to chief meteorologist doug kammerer. he's got the latest data comesing into storm center 4. >> we are going to be dealing with this just during that morning rush hour period between 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. that's when the heaviest stuff could come down. now storm team 4 radar is dry across our region right now. but once again, just like last night, we looked just off to the west. now we're talking about areas like st. louis, around cincinnati. here is that snow. and even starting to try to break out, just down to our south. you see the last few frames here, start to see the snow beginning to develop. as it does so overnight tonight, it will begin to stick to just about everything. that's really why we think we could be seeing some problems even on the roadways and the

sidewalks. winter weather advisory in effect for gaithersburg, manassas, fredericksburg, all of southern maryland, and of course the district. we are going to see that running through noon tomorrow. this is what you can expect tomorrow morning. snow at around 8:00. that's when it could come down heaviest with a temperature of about 30 degrees. 33 by noon as the snow begins to taper off. 34 degrees by 4:00. this isn't the only chance of snow in the next sex offender. temperatures, they're going to get a lot colder too. wait until you see what i have to show you next. >> thank you, doug. back to the breaking news at the rockville metro station. a woman hit and killed by a bus there. it happened a few hours ago. right now detectives are on the scene, trying to figure out who was at fault. shomari stone joins us with the latest on the investigation. shomari? >> reporter: that's right, doreen. right now montgomery police are out here outside the rockville metro station, trying to determine what caused this accident there is the bus right over there. you can see it. the lights are on inside. and there are investigators on the other side. they are snapping photos, trying

to figure out what happened. and they're snapping photos for evidence. right now let's take a look at this chopper 4 video shot a couple of hours ago. investigators tell me around 7:20 tonight, the bus driver was making a left from park road on to north stonestreet avenue to drop off and pick up people at the rockville metro station bus stop. now let's show you some ground video. investigators say the driver hit the woman in her 60s. medics rusheder to a nearby hospital where she died. the police collision reconstruction unit is trying to determine where the woman was hit, and if she was in the crosswalk. the driver stopped the bus and tonight he is cooperating with police. back out here live, police have not identified the woman. they are in the process of contacting her relatives. live here at the rockville metro station, i'm shomari stone, news4. >> thanks, shomari. tonight more than a few people are concerned after a letter carrier was robbed, tied up and beaten on his routes. it happened near hawaii avenue northeast. jackie bensen is in the area now

with reaction from neighbors as police continue to search for the suspects. jackie? >> reporter: jim, the mail carrier is expected to survive his injuries. but this crime, this crime is causing outrage. he was left injured and tied up in the back of his u.s. postal service van. people in this neighborhood near catholic university are saddened and angry that someone who works hard to bring them their mail and packages in all kinds of weather was victimized, beaten, and robbed. it was just after 4:00 p.m. when according to law enforcement accounts, the mail carrier was confronted by two men near number 50 hawaii avenue northeast. at least one had a gun. they forced him back to his van where he was assaulted and robbed of his wallet and keys. it's not clear if any mail was stolen. neighbors are absolutely horrified. many say the carrier is like a family member to them. >> i've been knowing him for probably 10, 12 years. a little scary right now. come out and something like this happens. especially to somebody you know.

>> i'm just devastated. i don't -- i hope that maybe -- i don't know if any neighbors were home. combination of retired people. we have students. and then people that go to work ever day. >> in november, mail carrier tyson barnett, 26, was shot to death while delivering mayor in cheverly area. his murder drew attention to understaffing and other issues that often result in carriers delivering mail after dark. now today's robbery did occur in broad daylight. unclear at this time is whether the mail carrier's key known as a master key or an arrow key was stolen. that's something that would give him access to panels of mailboxes inside apartment buildings and condos. we don't know if that was taken. but fit was, it could be fairly significant. live in northeast washington, jackie bensen, news4. >> thank you, jackie. the family of miriam carey

is suing the federal government for $75 million. that lawsuit stems from the high-speed chase and shooting last october. police opened fire as carey rammed her car into a white house barrier and then sped away around the capitol. she was killed. her toddler was in that car but was not injured. carey's sister spoke to our sister station in connecticut tonight. she says she, that carey did not have to die. wendy reiger is listening to that interview. she'll bring us a report later in this newscast. tonight family and friends gather to remember a woman who was murdered inside her apartment in southeast d.c. more than a dozen people turned out for a candlelight vigil to remember deetra martin. police say the mother of two was strangled to death last thursday. tonight the woman's boyfriend, 51-year-old kevin mcdarrin johnson is in jail facing charges in her death. >> very hurt. i'm lost for words right now.

>> this right here has really devastated all our family. >> there is still no word about a motive in this case. johnson is being held without bond. the sunday school teacher will be sentenced tomorrow for his role in a deadly road rage attack in fairfax county. today a jury found lee cena guilty of assault after a confrontation at the fair city mall parking lot in april. he was cleared of assault and battery charges, which means the jury believed he was acting in self-defense. cena punched the victim, 63-year-old william o'brien after he was honking at him. o'brien died ten days later of a head injury. cena is facing up to a year in jail. tonight a new nbc4 poll shows d.c. mayor vincent gray leading in the april 1 democratic primary. the results show he is benefitting from a crowded field of candidates. but he remains vulnerable because of if lingering 2010

campaign scandal. tom sherwood breaks down the findings. >> thank you very much. i appreciate it. first elected in 2010, mayor gray decided only in december to seek reelection. the new maris poll for nbc4 and media partners, wmau radio and the washington informer shows the head to head race this way now. gray has 28% followed by ward 4 councilmember muriel bowser in striking distance at 20%. 13% forward 2 councilmember jack evans. 12% forward 6 councilmember tommy wells, and 12% undecided. all of the other candidates trail in single digits, far behind the leaders. for mayor gray, however, his apparent lead is clouded. the poll shows two-thirds of democrats say it's time to elect someone else. among those democrats, 46% think gray did something unethical in his 2010 campaign 24% believe he didom

15% say he did not nothing wrong. another 15% aren't sure. the poll shows the scandal hurting gray, despite 74% of democrats saying the city is headed in the right direction. and as in previous citywide elections, race is playing a significant role. 41% of african american democrats support gray, but only 10% of white democrats do. white democrats who are likely to vote are split with 24% for tommy wells, 21% for jack evans, 18% for muriel bowser. but bowser is the one leading candidate to show crossover appeal among both whites and blacks. the polling shows few voters picked gray as their second choice. that suggests in this volatile campaign a challenger could still break out in the final weeks to consolidate enough anti-gray votes to overtake the mayor. but this race is far from over. in the direct, tom sherwood, news4. >> to check out all the poll

questions and results, head to nbcwashington.com and search decision d.c. d.c. councilmember and as tom noted tommy wells is calling on the city's fire chief and the deputy mayor for public safety to resign. this comes 24 hours after a hearing on the failed response to 77-year-old medric mills, who died after suffering a heart attack right across the street from a d.c. fire station. councilman wells sent a letter to mayor vincent gray, urging fire chief kenneth ellerbe and deputy mayor quander to step down. in maryland, the battle lines are being drawn over legalizing marijuana. like gambling, legalizing pot could lead to 10 to million dollars a year in additional tax revenue. but local law enforcement officials say it would come at a cost. the maryland sheriffs association publicly expressed their concerns in indianapolis today. >> legalization is not the

answer. and we will fight it until the very end. >> in maryland, we're spending $100 million a year on arresting and prosecuting people for marijuana offenses. basically, ruining a lot of people's job prospects and their resumes. >> last year, the maryland senate passed a bill decriminalizing marijuana. but it was defeated in the house. protests are growing against the controversy builds in arizona that would allow businesses to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers on religious grounds. opponents gathered again outside arizona state house tonight. they are urging governor jan brewer to reject that bill. that comes on top of a growing list of major corporations and some of brewer's own party members who say that bill could have a disastrous impact on arizona's economy. aides have said brewer likely will veto the measure. she has until the end of the week to do so. an update to a story you saw

family members for a connecticut woman killed during last year's chase on capitol hill are speaking out after filing a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the government. wendy reig has the reaction from the live desk. wendy? >> reporter: well, this is the first time we're hearing from carey's family members who explain why they are seeking $75 million from the u.s. government. carey's sister tells our nbc station in connecticut there is evidence to suggestha accidentally went through a white house security post in

october because the entrance was not properly manned, says the family. now that counters initial reports that carey intentionally rammed that post. carey then left the white house and was seen in video speeding up to capitol hill, where she almost ran over police officers who had surrounded her car before she fled, and again was killed when officers opened fire just a short time later around the corner. her 1-year-old daughter was in the back seat as officers fired on that car, and her family is questioning that. >> my sister was murdered in washington, d.c. she was unarmed, and she was in a car with her baby. and at some point those officers saw that but yet they repeatedly shot at her. >> the police officers say they did not see the baby in the car until after the shots were fired and carey had come to the stop and had been killed. carey's family lawyer also says he has now noticed changes at the white house security post at 15th and east streets since this incident. >> now they have all these

warning signs, all the police are wearing green vests. and now there is a lot more uniformed people. i think they realized that it's not as well guarded or not well guarded, but where people will not make the mistake and say hey, this is a secure area. >> and while the family has admitted that carey suffered from postpartum depression, they say this is immaterial to this lawsuit. jim and doreen? >> thanks, wendy. a former teacher at d.c.'s prestigious beauvoir apologizes. he says he is committed to a life of penance. he said he knew he was pedophile since he was 13 years old. he now admits to taking pornographic pictures of a student and of hiding a video camera in the school's bathroom. he was captured in nicaragua last year after five years on the run. he'll be sentenced next month. tonight the university of

maryland says it will lengthen its free credit card monitoring offer from one year to five years. today was the first day that those people could sign up for the free credit monitoring service. but because of the heavy call volume, phone lines to experian were jammed most of the day. the records hacked date back to 1998 including names, social security numbers and birth dates. doug is here with more about the snow that is coming in overnight. i hate to ask, but is it possible it might be enough to delay or cancel school? >> yeah, i really think it is. and that's really the case here. if that's coming down between 10:00 and noon, we would not have any problems. because it's cop do you think during the morning hours, right when the kids are going to be out from schools, we could see some delays early in the morning, and maybe even delays in other locations too. outside right now, not too bad, though we are definitely on the cold side. temperatures are in the mid 20s

in many areas. the airport, temperatures still sitting at 32 degrees with winds out of the north at 8 miles per hour. that northerly winds will continue to bring in some colder air, at least at the surface. and with that colder air, we're going to see any snow that develops stick on even the roadways across our region. 26 in huntingtown. every location on the map right now is below freezing. in many areas, well below. once again, that snow will fall. it will stick to the road waist. it will stick to the sidewalks. that's why we have the problem tomorrow morning. storm team 4 radar all clear for the most part. starting to pick up some snowshowers towards the south. not reaching the ground just yet. just back to the west, very similar to what we saw last night. a storm system back west, making its way our way. and once it gets across the mountains in towards the atlantic, able to pick up little bit of moisture, that's why we're predicting that 1 to 2 inches of snowfall across a wide area. future weather picks it up fairly well here. cold weather for sure. we have the clouds that have moved in across the region. by early tomorrow morning, here we are at 5:00 a.m.

this is when the snow starts. gaithersburg, washington, manassas, towards culpeper and quantico, over towards waldorf. during the morning hours, 8:00, when most of us are normally on the roads. that's when the snow could be coming down heaviest around the d.c. metro area. this is why we could have some delays. by 10:00, most of that snow starting to get out of here. if we were to have a two-hour delay, that would at least give them a little bit of time to get the roads prepared. by noon this is all out of here. by late in tavern, we're seeing sunshine. a day very similar to day. by the end of the day snow could be gone. but there is the winter weather advisory. it goes into effect at 1:00 a.m. right on through noon tomorrow. it includes everybody from frederick, leesburg and culpeper, down towards the south and east, including all of southern maryland. thinking 1 to 2 inches. leesburg, washington, down towards waldorf, warrenton, towards bowie, northern pofrgts calvert county.

back towards the west. a hole around frederick, martinsburg, coating to an inch for you. and back towards the west a little more. back into portions of west virginia around hardy and hampshire county. not a lot of snow, but it's the timing that we're going to be watching. highs tomorrow around 34. we get to 40 on thursday, which is still 10 degrees below average with sunshine. a high of only 28 on friday. friday will be one cold day starting off in the teens. a chance of snow coming up on saturday. a chance of rain coming up on sunday. and then we have a storm on monday, which right now looks like a mixture of rain and snow, but could be a big storm. we're going to be watching that one very, very closely. you know storm team 4 will keep you covered on that one. we have a lot of time to watch it. >> we have winter fatigue at this point. >> yeah, i'm almost there myself. not quite, but almost. >> thank you. moviegoers packed the lucky strike and regal cinemas at gallery place in d.c. for a very good cause tonight. a reception and screenings of

the crazy shot to fall there. they win their second wcac championship, 56-37. the girls' title game was tonight also, taking on st. john's. beverly giving st. john's the lead. but paul vi answers. player of the year. paul vi won the girls championship too. the final score on that one 57-54. also, the dciaa championship, theodore roosevelt, the boy's basketball team won the championship there. all right. moving on to baseball now. spring training continues for the nationals. everyone wants to know just how healthy is bryce harper. dianna russini sat down with the outfielder to find out and so far health has not been an issue. >> i really think coming into spring training, i wanted to know i was 100%. i really wanted to know that i could go through every day practice and have no pain, and i can hit and have no pain and run and throw.

yes, yes, yes! >> keep up the good fight. >> housekeepers, restaurant workers and ride operators at disney world are rallying for higher wages and better benefits in south florida. most say they earn less than $10 an hour. over the weekend, disney raised the ticket prices by $4. union workers say the company is making a big enough profit to give them a raise. their current contract is due to expire next month. schools around the country will soon have to eliminate any posters or billboards advertising unhealthy snacks on their campuses. the white house is banning so-called junk ads to build on new regulations setting sugar and fat limits for any food sold in our schools. arlington is already doing what the obama administration is now requiring of schools nationwide. the idea is if we don't want our kids eating or drinking it, then we shouldn't be advertising it to them either.
