questioned by the tsa, why one woman's d.c. driver's license created a lot of confusion. robbed and beaten on his postal route, why a letter carrier credits the power of prayer with saving his life. first tonight, a man who survived the holocaust was hit and killed by a school bus in montgomery county today. >> the 91-year-old was hit as he crossed columbia pike in silver spring. neighbors are devastated and police are searching for answers. we have the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police are trying to figure out why this accident happened. elia miranski was crossing columbia park. he lives about a block away and when that bus hit him, he was in the crosswalk according to police and tonight his neighbors are missing him.

>> i believe he is a nice guy. >> reporter: tonight this man is saddened to learn his next door neighbor, 91-year-old holocaust survivor elia miranski died after a school bus hit him nearby on columbia pike. >> i don't understand first of all why a guy of 91 years of age as you said is crossing. >> reporter: his mangled walker is on the side of the road. this chopper 4 video shows the scene, 2:20 this afternoon in silver spring, traffic backed up for miles. police say miranski safely crossed the southbound lanes on columbia pike at tech road. he was on his way to go shopping, trying to cross the northbound lanes when the school bus hit him. was he in the crosswalk? >> investigators believe he was in the crosswalk, however there's -- they're still looking at the sequence of not only the pedestrian indicators but the traffic signals that control the intersection as well. >> reporter: this woman says there's something wrong with the signals. >> but the crossing lights don't work that well.

i tirks school bus is contracted by howard county public schools. 14 students from hammond middle, two school employees were on the bus returning from a white house field trip. they weren't hurt. another bus picked them up after the accident. what are you going to miss most about him? >> his smile. >> reporter: that's exactly what people tell us. now, police will be interviewing the bus driver and witnesses to determine who had the right of way. the bus driver has not been charged. live in silver spring, news 4. we're also learning more tonight about the woman who was hit and killed by a ride-on bus at the rockville metro station last night. the victim was a housekeeper and the mother of two. castillo's daughter says her mother was walking to meet her husband when the accident occurred. police say the bus driver is cooperating with the investigation. they do not believe that speed was a factor here. overwhelming support for the

family of an arlington mother who was killed by a dump truck. the account has been shut down now because friends of jennifer lawson donated $17,000 to help her family in a matter of hours. the friend who set up the fund hoped to raise $5,000 to help with expenses. lawson was the mother of three young children. a dump truck hit her on monday while she was reaching into her minivan to get her daughter. her family says they will use the additional donations to help the community in her name. sources tell news 4 that a popular mail carrier's prayers might have saved his life. and now there is hope that a $50,000 reward might lead police to the men who attacked him. the postman is also a pastor. yesterday while on his rounds on webster street northeast a bunch of masked men jumped out and forced him into their van then demanded to know what happened to a package.

[ laughter ] >> so a very spirited debate. now, the candidates were asked would they keep controversial fire chief ken ellerbe if they are elected mayor. now, the challenger said that, no, they would not keep him as fire chief here in the city. the mayor who has expressed very strong support for him in the past today said that's something they would have to talk about in a second term. reporting live from northwest washington, darcy spencer, news 4. thanks, darzi. tonight there's a new report that details how d.c. police can respond to hate crimes and help the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. that report independently produced was finished back in september, but it was only released today. among the 30 recommendations, the d.c. police agreed they urgently need to build trust with the transgender community. they need to improve training on

transgender issues and review past cases. also the police department admits that it needs to make sure that its policies on investigating hate crimes are effective. in prince georges county, police are looking for the two men in this video. they are connected with several robberies in the area. the video is from one of the holdups at a liquor store on old annapolis road last week. police believe the men also robbed two gas stations in buoy, maryland. during one of those robberies, the men sped off on a black motorcycle. still ahead, questioned by tsa agents. why one woman was told her d.c. driver's license wasn't enough to get past airport security. a new multimillion dollar plan to make you ride on metro just a bit more comfortable. and inside the mind of man's best friend.

a local woman flying home from arizona questioned as to whether her d.c.'s driver's license was a valid form of i.d. tonight she's sharing her story with news 4's jackie benton. >> i got a little nervous. i was like i hope the isn't a problem. >> reporter: ashley brant says she experienced a bit of a shock when she got to the front of the security line at the phoenix security airport. she and her boyfriend enjoyed a rehabilitated trip to the grand canyon and she was looking forward to heading home. but she says the tsa agent who checked her in initially declined to accept her d.c. driver's license as a valid i.d. for airline travel. >> i wasn't sure if the tsa agent didn't think it was a valid i.d. or because d.c.

wasn't a state or what her confusion was. >> reporter: brant says the agent asked for her passport which she did not have with her. luckily the confusion was short lived and brand made in the time to board her flight home. >> she literally yelled over to another tsa agent and said "do we accept a d.c. license?" and he yelled back "yeah, we take those." and i was able to move on. i air, spokesperson for the tsa tells news 4 a valid washington, d.c. driver's license is an acceptable form of identification at l checkpoints. in a tweet, brand's boyfriend theorize it had license was questioned because passengers didn't have statehood. passengers say they don't know what to make of the incident. >> i've never heard of that actually. >> that's very surprising. >> i think it's ridiculous. how is that even possible? >> reporter: brand did not file a complaint with the tsa but she hopes that what happened to her will serve as a lesson to them. jackie benson, news 4. there have been several high-profile murders and

unsolved missing persons cases involving young people in southern virginia. tonight, the families of several of those victims sat down together hoping to raise awareness about those cases. the families say the circumstances are different but the feelings are the same. >> somebody hurt them and took them from us. that's not right. >> it is a miracle and that's all i can say. it is short of a miracle that any of us sitting at this table can get up in the morning and get dressed and have some semblance of a normal life. the parents say it's important to realize their children were victims not trouble makers hanging out with the wrong crowd. d.c., maryland, and virginia are all sending metro some cash in hopes of creating a better commute. each jurisdiction is giving metro $25 million. that money will go toward

beefing up the rail system's electric infrastructure. that will allow for longer trains and hopefully less crowding. the focus will be on the orange and red lines, metro's two busiest routes. a bill has been introduced in north dakota that would crack down -- maryland that would crack down on distracted driving. it's called jake's law. under that law, drivers distracted by a cell phone would face a penalty of up to three years in jail and a $5, 000 fine in the case of serious injury or death. right now, the penalty is only a traffic violation. that bill is named for five-year-old jake owen, he died after a driver hit his parents' car while talking on the phone. the driver. jake's mom talked about the dangers of distracted driving in annapolis today. >> if you cause a crash because you are on your -- talking on your cell phone or you are texting or updating your facebook there's serious consequences, especially lives are lost and there's serious injuries. >> reporter: he was found guilty

of negligent driving after police say he was talking on his phone and plowed into susan young's car and killed jake. in news for your health, a study raising new concerns about a man's so-called biological clock. american and swedish researchers found children conceived when their father were over the age of 45 were 13 times more likely to have adhd than a sibling born when the father was in his early 20s. children of older fathers were also more likely to have autism or to struggle with some mental health problems. researchers add despite the links in the study, the findings don't prove that a father's age can actually cause psychiatric problems for children. doug is here with more -- more cheery news. this has been a tough winter and it's the cold that's getting to be so hard to take. the amazing thing about it is temperatures are above average for the month of february. >> that's hard to believe. >> you wouldn't think it.

we had more days below average but the days above average we were in the mid-60s. that's what we saw this weekend but that's a faint memory as temperatures go way down and we end this month well below average as we head into the next couple days. we have the coldest there in about a month making its way in here. overnight tonight it will be a very cold night. out towards the airport we are seeing temperatures around the 28-degree mark so very cold there and just a little bit of wind east/northeast at seven miles an hour. that puts our windchill down to 21 degrees and this is going to feel warm when you compare it to what we're going to see in a couple of days. already down to 18 in martinsburg and windchill, 21 in leesburg and manassas, temperatures will drop by about another five or 10 degrees so some of you will be close to the single digits and this is what we're talking about here, down 9 in haggerstown. 13 in manassas, 19 in washington, that will be the first time we've seen

temperatures into the teens and storm team 4 radar has nothing on it right now. that was not the case earlier today. snow made its way through. some areas picking up one to two inches of snow for the second straight day and now the clearing skies, that will allow temperatures to cool quickly and we are going to be in for one cold day. so we've got the cold air moving in, a cold night overnight but it gets even colder on friday and, yeah, then we're talking another chance of snow soon. talk about the future windchill here. we'll take you through early tomorrow morning. how about a windchill of 10 in d.c., 2346 martinsburg, you're thinking hey, that's a cold one. tomorrow afternoon we stay in teens back to the north and west. inside the city a windchill remains in the mid-20s but watch what happens on friday morning. windchill about 1 in d.c., near 0 in leesburg and 1 below in martinsburg, 5 below in haggerstown. an extremely cold friday. high temperatures friday should stay below freezing. we have not seen that happen since the end of january. a high tomorrow of 40, 28 for a high on friday, that's even with

some sunshine. slight chance of snow on saturday, that's just 43 degrees with a chance for flurries, not a big deal at all. on sunday chance for some late-day showers with a high of 48. that's as our next storm system moves in and right now it looks like we're going to have enough cold air in here for this storm system to have some kind of wintery weather. what i mean by that is most likely coming in the form of some ice. and that could be a big concern but possibly snow, too, as that storm moves off the coast. so moderate to strong storm, a wintery mix ooking more and more likely from this and this is something storm team 4 will be watching closely over the next couple days. tom keir written will have the latest information at about 4:30 tomorrow morning. the chance of snow lingers into the day on tuesday but once again we are talking about very cold air for this time of year and we're talking about the storm on monday. we will be watching it all for you and we'll continue to give you the latest other the next few days. i mention that we're a little above average here. miami one of the warmest winters they've had. duluth, minnesota, one of the

and seth rogan testified for alzehimer's disease funding after opening up about his mother-in-law's battle with the disease. new fallout for target stores after that major security breach that had an impact on $40 million customers. target announced that its all-important fourth-quarter profits were down more than 40%. that includes black friday and holiday sales. the company says the breach scared away a lot of their customers. a lucky break for a guy in new york. he went to a buffalo area store last month, he wanted to buy his favorite scratchoff lottery tickets. he bought seven, but the clerk accidentally handed him eight. when he realized the mistake he handed one back but after winning $25 he went back and bought another scratchoff and that was the one that hit the jackpot to the tune of $10 million! he's quit his job already and he promised his mom a trip to see her family in poland. you ever had a dog that gave
