officer peter laboy has hoped to have for months. today on the one year anniversary of the day laboy was shot in the head while on motorcycle patrol it happened laboy and his wife heard the story of that harrowing day from one of the most critical emergency responders. >> somebody told me before that you know, he said there's an officer down, i'm not going anywhere, and that's what he did. and, you know, probably one of the things that probably saved my life. >> so many people were just -- >> you're like a cog in the whole thing. >> absolutely. >> for many reasons, you know. >> i did the right thing when hit to be done. >> that's amazing. >> reporter: what's amazing to many is what he did to get to laboy so quickly. eagle one was on a presidential detail with two secret service personnel on board. tim ryan heard the officer down and eagle one broke away to head

to alexandria. when they heard he was grave lie injured they made a bold decision to land in a very tight spot right on a school playground. just a half block from laboy. >> i'm sitting in the aircraft and saying to myself i need somebody to keep that tail clipper. had enough room. >> reporter: the landing and pick up was successful and laboy was rushed to med star. only later did the crew learn laboy had been shot in the head. he says seeing laboy today was a great feeling. >> i was a little worried because we don't get to see folks that are back on their feet so it was greet. makes you feel warm inside. >> reporter: now you notice officer laboy's arm was in a sling. he had surgery on tuesday to repair another left over injury from a year ago when he hit the ground. but se on the mend with that. coming up on news4 at 6:00 more

details about the teamwork it took to put that chopper down on this playground that day. from old town, alexandria, i'm julie carey, news4. right now attorney general eric holder is at home after spending three hours in the hospital. he was in a morning meeting with senior staffers and the justice department said he started feeling faint and shortness of breath. chris gordon was the first news crew at med star when we learned of this health scare. >> reporter: we have new information tonight about the medical problem and treatment that the attorney general received. here in the emergency room behind me at med star. he arrived about 10:30 with an elevated heart rate which means it felt his heart was pounding in his chest too fast. doctors gave him medication and within a short period of time his heart rate returned to normal levels. however this is a symptom that several years ago he had experienced in a milder form so today was cause for concern.

as a precaution his security detail wanted attorney general eric holder transported by ambulance. holder reportedly joked with paramedics during the ride to med star washington hospital center. he was taken into the emergency room to be checked out. earlier this morning holder had complained about faintness and shortness of breath at his senior staff meeting at the department of justice. holder is 63 and stated as in good shape, playing basketball regularly. in the hospital he was reportedly resting comfortably, alert and conversing with doctors who evaluated him. at the white house briefing reporters asked if the president had anything to say about the attorney general being taken to the hospital? >> the president was notified and wishes him a speedy recovery. >> reporter: just after 1:00 this the afternoon four vehicles in his security detail today left the hospital and we were told mr. holder was sent home. the attorney general walked out of the hospital without any

assistance. now he's well-known and well-liked locally before he became the u.s. attorney general. he served as a d.c. superior court judge. and the u.s. attorney for the district of columbia which means he was the top prosecutor of all criminal cases in washington, d.c. that's the latest. i'm chris gordon news4 back to you. it was cold out there today. and the wind made it feel even colder but this was just an appetizer because the main course is heading our way overnight when it will be the coldest day of the month. doug kammerer? >> last day of the month. last day of the month of february looks like it will be the coldest and as we enter the first couple days of march we could be talk about another big storm. let's take a look. right now the winds gusting 25 to 35 miles per hour across the region. 25 in d.c. right now. 33 in gaithersburg. 28 manassas and 30 in leesburg. with cool temperatures the wind chills are way down across our region.

wind chill down to 19 in gaithersburg, 17 in martinsburg, 13 in hagerstown, 33 in patuxent river. very cold afternoon and cold evening and colder overnight tonight with temperatures tomorrow staying below freezing. then we turn our attention to monday and another winter storm that's looking bigger and bigger. we'll talk much more about that storming up around the 5:15 hour. students and staff at a local campus are finding out about a sexual assault that happened over the summer. that attack happened on the loudoun campus of the northern virginia community college. that campus was already on edge following two sexual assaults in that area in october. on monday a woman who works for a company that contracts with the school reported this incident from the summer. campus police banned a co-worker who the alleged victim identified as her attacker and at this point police think it's an isolated incident. a teacher who lost his job after being accused of showing

up drunk was found not guilty of being drunk in public today. michael higgins was arrested at broad run high school in ashburn last march. a colleague reported he was under the influence. he testified he had been drinking the night before but not that morning and not at school. he hopes to return to teaching. >> we now know the cause of that house fire that killed a college student from prince george's county. fire investigators revealed that the fire at the house in frostburg, maryland it started in the kitchen and appears t ac. 23-year-old man died in that fire on february 14th. he was a student at frostburg state and lived in the house that was converted to college apartments. a court injunction is giving more than 200 families in prince george's some extra time before they are forced out of their homes. wscc was going shut the water off at the lynn hill condominium. but the building got an

emergency injunction to keep the water on until march 14th. this gives residents more time to set a court date to get those bills paid. in court lynn hills representatives claim their funds to pay the bills were embezled. >> today some georgetown residents are upset about a proposed condo project. the georgetown dish is reporting a develop wants to build luxury condos at the base of that area known as the exorcist steps. the proposed height about 50 fete. residents say they have problems with the design and concerned the new structure will block their views of the potomac river. >> officials with the d.c. circulator are looking to expand their routes in the city. one proposal would add a loop from union station around the mall down underneath. that would start next spring. d.c. circulator held a forum taking input from riders on where they would like to see current lines expand but of

course nothing is free. ddot recommending a fare change. that would have to be approved by the d.c. council. in less than 30 minutes another public hearing will be under way on proposed changes for some of metro's bus routes in southern prince george's county. past meetings have left some commuters upset when the routes could be eliminated or severely altered. prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins reports. >> reporter: buses in southern prince george's county are important. there aren't many of them and with no metro train stations around buses are what many commuters rely on. brendan is one of them. >> i'm a metro fan. >> reporter: which is why he was so upset when he heard his bus route might change. right now around 6:00 in the morning he comes out here to old

fort road and catches the w 13 bus and rides 40 minutes before he's dropped off in front of smithsonian down the street from his job no transfers. under one of metro's new proposals he has to catch the bus here 40 minutes earlier then be brought here to the eisenhower metro station in metro where he would then board the train, ride the yellow line and ride the blue or orange line landing him here at smithsonian station anute longer commute. >> marylanders don't want to hear they have to go virginia to catch a train to get to work. >> that's part of what we have to dialogue with folks is to identify what is the highest priority. >> reporter: metro is holding a number of public hearings on proposed changes for this and other bus routes in southern prince george's county. officials say the problem is demand outweighing resources. >> unfortunately the number of buses in our fleet and the amount of funding for services has not kept up with the overall

potential. >> reporter: while brendan says he understands demand with all of the proposed changes he's considering driving to work for the first time. >> this concerns me not mention what the cost will be. president obama launched his new my brother's keeper program aimed to help create more opportunities for young boys and men of color. local students from d.c.'s college access program and latin america youth center were in the crowd for today's announcement at the white house. mr. obama is calling on business leaders to join together to put young people on a path to success. some foundations have already pledged at least $200 million over five years. the obama administration on a mission to improve those nutrition lablgs that you see on nearly every food that's packaged. the number of calories who appear in larger, bolder type, serving sizes would be more realistic and for the first time you're going to know if foods have any added sugars.

to her door. a caregiver in that home was also shot but she survived. police were inundated with calls after this composite sketch was released and they tell news4 they are confident they are getting closer to an rest. anne arundel police are asking for the public's help to find this man who cut a store clerk with a knife. the employee tried to detain him until police arrived. that's when he pulled out a knife, swung at the worker and ran off. the employee was cut in head but expected to be okay. we reported on several serial bank robbers in our area recently but tonight police in montgomery county are looking for a guy who hit up the same bank twice a month part. pat collins is live outside of the wells fargo in silver spring. pat, the same guy? >> reporter: same guy. he did it in january. he did it in february. do you think he'll try it again

resting at home. he was rushed to med star washington hospital center after complaining of shortness of breath. we learned holder arrived at the hospital about 10:30 in the morning and taken to the emergency room with an elevated heart rate. he was released three hours later. he's 63 and in great shape and an avid basketball player. for the first time since the shooting that nearly took his life, alexandria police officer peter laboy met the helicopter pilot that saved him. the pilot had to maneuver his chopper into a tight space to pick up officer laboy and get him to hospital. julie carey talked to both men about that experience. he'll be live from alexandria at the top of the hour. take a good look at this guy pat collins just profiled. police in montgomery county said he robbed the same wells fargo twice since january. the first robbery happened back jon. the most recent just last friday. both the branch along georgia avenue in down silver r spring.

if you recognize him police want to hear from you. first at 5:30 friends are remembering the remarkable life of a holocaust survivor killed by a school bus in silver spring. his name was elia miranski. he was 91 years old. today news4 kristen wright tracked down some of the people who knew him and get a clip of an interview he did with the holocaust museum. >> he was crossing the street here when he was killed by a school bus ending a life that we really only read about in history books. elia miranski is pictured here with his wife at the hebrew home in rockville in 2008 where he lived at the time and what a life he lived. >> he said he thinks about his experiences every day and every night. >> reporter: he was a 91-year-old holocaust survivor. gail schwartz interviewed him last may important the u.s. holocaust memorial museum. she was devastated to find out

elia miranski's interview at the holocaust museum. we have a link at our website. still a lot of questions as to how exactly this happened to him. we'll have that for you coming up at 6:00. live in sill servir spring, kristen wright news4. tonight arlington police need your help finding twons a tragic accident that left the mother of three dead. jennifer lawson was killed when a dump truck hit her while she was standing outside her parked car. the crash happened near nottingham elementary in arlington on monday. police say there were at least two vehicles directly behind the truck when it hit lawson. those drivers left before police arrived. prince george's county schools need to improve their bottom line. that's the findings avenue legislative audit that found a lack of documentation for a handful of contracts that total a million dollars. i want also found a number of overpayments to employees that totalled a million dollars as of

2012. the auditors suggested improving transportation by using bus routing software to better manage the school system's bus fleet. it's been about four months since a man opened fire inside los angeles international airport killing a tsa officer and wounding others. tonight we're learning new details of about some of the issues that may have impacted those first responders. news4 pat lawson muse is here with more. >> when the gunman opened fire inside terminal three a tsa agent tried to call on an emergency checkpoint phone. but the dispatcher didn't know where to send officer. a former airline security director tells the ap those phones usually indicate the call origin, suggesting this phone may have not been working properly. two officials who have seen a preliminary version of the emergency response review tell the ap among other problems there were also broken panic buttons inside terminal three and other parts of lax and 911 callers are routed to

california's highway patrol rather than airport dispatchers. we should note here first responders did reach the scene at lax within 90 seconds. one tsa officer died in the shooting. the first-ever to be killed in the line of duty. the suspected gunman right now remains in custody and pleaded not guilty. the official report detailing the emergency response will be released next month. windy? we have some breaking news from dulles airport. a united airlines flight just landed safely after declaring an emergency. the plane was coming in from st. louis and reported a door either opening or coming off the underside of the plane. there were no injuries as the plane did land safely. these are live pictures from chopper 4. there was also a report that some luggage was starting to come out of the plane. and there might be a mechanical problem. you can bet there's a lot of people looking closely at this plane to determine what went wrong. there's no need to be worried if you notice sirens or loud speaker announcements

live pictures of dulles once again. let's take a look. up nighted airlines flight just landed. it's still taxiing in at dulles. it came in from st. louis when it reported an emergency on board. one of the doors possibly connected to the luggage department had come open or was already open. luggage was starting to fall out of the plane as it was landing. everyone got on the ground. the passengers are safe. the plane as you can see taxiing in to the gateway with emergency vehicles following it. so far it looks like other than that door everything is okay and the plane is in one pes. we'll keep you posted on this.

questions remain tonight after a hazmat situation on the rails in prince george's county. early this morning a csx train started leaking fuel on the tracks near the marc station in riverdale. marc and amtrak run on that section. it was transporting rocks when the leak happened. not clear how much fuel leaked or why. a muddy road may have stopped copper thieves from getting away in anne arundel county. police responded to report of a theft and found a tow truck pulling a pickup out of a wooded area. three men cut their way into a storage area in hanover and stole copper cables from generators. their truck got caught in the mud so they called for a tow. police arrested two men who are now charged with burglary theft and other offenses. a third man got away. a jail scandal with guards smuggling contraband to prisoners in baltimore now the maryland senate wants to crack down on correction overseas. they approved a bill to suspend

story. >> reporter: it's a dump. the lorton landfill to be precise, it's supposed to close shop at the end of its contract in four years but is fighting to stay through 2040. that's up for debate. >> we bring in perspectives it's the right thing to do. >> reporter: in a phone interview the company behind the landfill says the contract extension would mean adding a renewable energy park. it would result in what? >> the avoidance of 3.6 million tons of greenhouse gas. >> reporter: some nearby residents say time super. >> it's absolutely a broken promise. >> reporter: bill lynch heads the citizen's group that want the landfill closed. >> they put caps in their development conditions in 2007 that there would be no further expansion of this landfill. >> reporter: not to mention the effects on precious wildlife. >> they offered to put three wind turbines up on top but we're within five miles of a

pressure to stay fit. >> it was a big problem. when it came time for them to have a baby and get back in shape they were behind. >> reporter: the army started this unique work out that includes centering, strength training and a little cardio. sergeant rachel is seven months pregnant and says bond cigarette a big part too. >> we share stories. we talk about it. we know there are other people going through the same thing that we're going through. >> reporter: vital support in an environment where stereotypes still exist. >> as a woman in the army you already have to fight and strive to be treated equally sometimes and you don't want to be personally i don't want to be treated like i can't do anything now that i'm pregnant. >> reporter: a competitive spirit that appears strong after baby. alan reports 80% of women in the program return to duty after six months passing the physical fitness test which includes meeting the military's weight requirement.

cost more, transportation reporter adam tuss is live at gallery place with a breakdown on how this proposed increase will roll out. >> reporter: hey, chris whether you love metro or you don't love metro so much you should be ready to pay more. fare hikes very much front and center. in fact they are almost a certainty at this point. for a lot of metro riders talk of a fare increase he doesn't add up. you think it's right they are asking you to pay more? >> well, no. it's not working right why are we paying more? >> reporter: john wall uses the system every single day. he says it's fine about 75% of the time. >> you want to make sure you get to work time and in somewhat comfortable fashion you need to leave early in the morning or leave work later. >> reporter: let's break down the increases. the average rail fare goes up 3% to 4%.

metro jump fares jump up. parking increases 25 cents and 50 cent charge at prince george's county stations. on metro access most trips increase 30 cents. >> it just goes up and down. >> reporter: this is a metro access rider. he has a bad back, on a fixed income. he pays about six bucks for a one way ride. >> some people would say that you have to pay more on cabs. i say but still metro access was set up for the low-income, so think about that. >> reporter: there are others that say they are happy to have metro regardless of the cost. >> for the most part it's clean. i don't see any big problems -- it works very well during rush hour. >> reporter: metro leaders expected to make a final decision on fare increases next

on the anniversary of a shooting that almost killed peter laboy finally met one of men who helped save his life. laboy was shot in the head when he pulled over a taxicab driver. during his rescue a helicopter pilot had to pull off some difficult maneuvers in a school playground. those two metaphor the very first time. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey has our report. >> reporter: when i interviewed peter laboy last week he told me he wanted to meet the helicopter pilot that landed on this playground to help save him a year ago today. he already met the medic. today he got to say thanks in attorney that pilot. >> we heard you were on the ground and we needed to get to you. we dodged over there. >> reporter: it's a conversation and reunion alexandria police officer peter laboy has hoped to have for months. today on the one year anniversary of the day laboy was shot in the head while on motorcycle patrol, it happened.
