in the high impact zone. five to ten inches. i'll get to hometown specifics when i see you next. >> thanks. crews across the region are gearing up for the storm now. we checked with crews in virginia, maryland and district. they're preparing for another round. the d.c. department of public works will have 200 plows on the morning before the major morning rush. streets like this will be a street they work to keep clear. give them space to get by. treat your sidewalks with rock salt icer, kitty litter before the snow comes. crews tweeted out this picture of a truck loading up at a salt facility. the city has a good supply ready and crews standing by to treat the roads. they'll monitor the weather and deploy teams when the time is

right. today people are buying supplies. salt melt, ice shovels. we are live where they are already running out of basic supplies. hi derrick. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there has been a rush. we were kind of seeing a lull in action here at the hardware . you see the snow shovels. there has been a rush on those supplies. a lot of people are coming away empty handed. they're having a hard time finding ice melt. we talked to the guy that run this is place. he says he's never seen it like this before. people have been disappointed when it comes to ice melt. take a listen. >> this is the first year i can remember working here in 17 years that we haven't been able to get it at will. i believe there's a shortage all over the country. that's helped us not being able to find it. we have pulled our resources and

officials believe 34 were killed including four responsible for the attack. 140 others were hurt. according to current reports, 10 separatists ran into the train station and started cutting people with knives. police arrested one, but five others got away. we're trying to find out the motive. meanwhile, navy rescue crews are looking a pilot after he crashed the fighter jet. officials tell us the fa-18 went down about 70 miles east of the navy's fallon base outside of reno. officials have been trying to contact the pilot, but they haven't heard response. the mountainous area is stalling rescue efforts. this morning, outsmarting the internet hackers. the efforts happening as we speak to crack down on cyber attacks. it's incredible cell phone

the cell phone video showing a strong wave crashing into the moby dick restaurant in santa barbara, california. the wave broke a glass window and sent customers running for safety. fortunately no one was hurt. cleanup efforts in california underway. heavy rain flooded up many of the state and caused serious power outages and mudslides. we have the latest on the dangers. >> reporter: pounding rain, thunderstorms, dangerous mudslides. 25 miles east of los angeles, debr debris pours into drives. it's a race to clear the mud. the next winter wallop rolled in quickly. 1,000 are threatened by the hillside above. >> mandatory evacuations remain in effect until we have an

>> reporter: from farms to city, the weather has crippled california. forecasters say the storm has almost passed, but the threat is far from over. >> that same system brought more snow to the denver area causing this deadly 104 car pileup. you can see the back up for miles. dozens were taken to the hospital. traffic was at a stand still two hours while crews cleaned up the mess. further east, missouri residents stock up on supplies. take a look. stores in st. louis had shoppers packed in grabbing food, supplies, batteries, milk. power outages are expected. forecasters say the storm could add ten inches to the already snowy season. we heard derrick talk about them running out of supplies. one store got a new shipment of ice melt. >> absolutely right. this storm even though it's going to start as rain, there's

a whole lot of true arctic air m coming in on the back side of this. this will have no trouble switching to snow. it will guarantee start as rain and end as snow. the transition comes between midnight tonight and sunrise tomorrow morning. heaviest snow likely between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. monday morning. not exactly good news for work and schools. it looks like it's going to be a high impact event. current advisories, everybody under the sound of my voice, winter storm warning tonight and tomorrow. winter storm warnings extend further out to the west. they don't go that much further north. the latest overnight runs continue to show the storm tracking further south. that's bad news for people in southern virginia. it could be potentially bad for us as it may bring the band of heaviest snow under the heart of the baltimore washington area. here it is on radar now.

we are dry and mild this morning. local roads are still dry. temperatures are above freezing. the leading edge of the cold air is moving far western maryland. that cold front could be sliding through here sun down tonight. once the front goes by, temperatures are really going to trend down quickly. we're already in the upper 30s and low 40s. fredricksburg already 51 degrees. we are 10 to 25 degrees warmer now than we were yesterday morning at the same time. cloudy skies have moved in overnight. it is 42 thousand at national airport. winds out of the south at six miles per hour. here's your forecast. loudoun cloudy, up near 50 for a time today. first rain drops rolling in between 3:00 and 5:00 this afternoon, steadier rain between 7:00 and 10:00. by midnight, change over from rain to sleet and freezing rain between midnight and 2:00. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, it's

challengers bowers tied for second. school leaders in montgomery county will send a message about overcrowding in the classroom. they're rallying thursday to call for state construction. they're already working with prince george's and baltimore counties to spend $1 in state money for every $2 in county money. star is among those planning to be at the rally. in fairfax, teachers are getting ready to protest lagging salaries. it could hurt students in the long run. teachers are protesting cutting back on work outside of their contracts. this includes tutoring, traveling and writing college recommendations. fairfax county boasts the biggest school system. in recent years the salaries have fallen behind arlington an

all of us moms agree having a baby is challenging. having to return to work six months later, many are doing it in our region. we look at how army moms get mission ready. >> i used to be able to do 42 pushups in two minutes, 70 situps in two minutes and run a 17 flat two miles. in one month, specialist veronica king is expected to do it again. five months after having her first son. >> i'm building back up slowly. it takes time. >> any woman that's given birth knows how tough it can be to bounce back. here in the army, that ability is put to the test with the training having one goal to get these women mission ready six months after giving birth. >> sergeant first class allen

welcome back. a man is waking up behind bars after police say he assaulted and kidnapped his ex girlfriend. yesterday deputies reported to a call on belfonte road. he forced his ex into a car, took off before deputies could arrive. the two were spotted by troopers two hours later. carter didn't pull over for office areas. he instead left his car as well as his ex girlfriend and ran off in the wooded area. the witness spotted him, called deputies who caught him shortly after. his ex was treated at nearby hospital, released in good condition. you could see protestors marching through washington.

hundreds are expected to gather at georgetown university and march to the white house protesting the keystone pipeline. organizers say they'll occupy intersections and do what they call symbolic oil spills. this will mark the 50th time gop lawmakers have tried to repeal, defund or change the affordable care act. the newest proposal would eliminate the penalty for not signing up for coverage. it's expected to pass in the republican controlled house but fail in the democratic leaning senate. back to our winter storm coverage. grab your snow shovel and get ready to clear your sidewalk and driveway. every jurisdiction has their own rules about shoveling the sidewalks. some may be ticketed for some clearing a path. remember, warm up, stretch before you go outside to shovel, shovel snow in small amounts, and take lots of breaks. make sure you're bending from your knees and shoveling in a

>> we just got this in. checked with folks from virginia power. they've been watching this approaching winter storm for days now, and their trucks are stocked. crews are ready to go. their main concern is weight of the snow. if mostly powdery, they won't have much of a problem. if snow is more wet, that can weigh down trees and power lines and knock out electrician yty ie neighborhoods. >> you say wet or dry? >> it's going to start as wet and end as dry powdery snow. the snow before valentine's day started out at powder and changed over to rain. it made shoveling snow really heavy. this time around rain comes up front and be covered over by the snow. as a result it will be easier in that respect. we could have a glazing of ice
