it wasn't even that fast. >> dangerous conditions on area roadways. some are still snowpacked. others are covered in deep ice. a deep freeze has set in. ghost towns. businesses closing early because of the icy conditions. foot traffic slowed to a crawl across our region. and in one local neighborhood, a woman died while digging out from the storm. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> the storm may be gone, but it's really cold out there tonight. too cold, in fact, for salt trucks to do much good. and that has schools and businesses closing again tomorrow. >> we've got team coverage of the deep freeze that is settling in tonight, from d.c., maryland, and virginia. but we begin with chief meteorologist doug kammerer in storm center 4. doug? >> hey, guys. we are talking about bitter cold air across the region that is going to last right on through early tomorrow morning. we already set a couple of records out there, at least one. let's take a look. currently around the metro area, 17 at national.

no problem there. it's cold. but it's not 8 in camp springs. 9 in huntingtown. 3 degrees in gaithersburg. and look back to the west. leesburg at 5. manassas at zero. warrenton at 1. dulles 3 degrees. that sat terse old record of 12 set back in 1980. and i think dulles will set another record during the day tomorrow. we have had very cold temperatures after the snowfall that we had. we saw a little bit of melting earlier with these frigid temperatures, we are going to see icy roadways for sure. as we mentioned with the numerous delays, we've already seen a lot of school closures during the morning hours tomorrow. tomorrow one more frigid day, and then we start to moderate. at least a little bit. and i'm watching yet another system that i'll talk about a little later on in my forecast. >> thanks, doug. some breaking news now. we have just learned from the federal government that federal workers will be due back at work tomorrow. government agencies will be open on a two-hour delay with the option for unscheduled leave or telework. d.c. schools and the district

government also will be on a two-hour delay tomorrow. in maryland, anne arundel, calvert, charles, montgomery, and prince george's counties and st. mary's counties schools are all going to be closed tomorrow. frederick and howard counties are on a two-hour delay. the list is long and growing in virginia too. alexandria city, arlington, fairfax, falls church, and loudoun county schools all closed tomorrow. >> also, manassas park and prince william closed. you can find a full list of closures scrolling at of your screen now. also at nbcwashington.com. storm team 4x4 has been out tracking conditions. whether they've been plowed or not, those roads could be dangerous overnight and into tomorrow. the bitter cold leading to black ice in a lot of places. news4 shomari stone is live in chevy chase with more on the icy condition. shomari? >> let's go right to the icy

conditions. right now roadways are beginning to refreeze, and roads are icy. we're here on deal place in chevy chase. you can take a look at our storm team 4 cameras. and secondary roads like this one are covered with ice and even slippery in some spots. >> it's just going get worse. >> reporter: tonight eric gargas is concerned about montgomery county roads refreezing, causing more accidents like the one he witnessed. take a look at this acura at the 270 beltway inner loop near exit 38. >> he just slid right off the road, hit some ice, and the car rolled right over. it wasn't even that fast. >> reporter: dangerous road conditions are stricting around. temperatures are staying below freezing overnight. some main and highways have black ice in some spots. right now we're on the beltway. and you can look right here. this is a corvette. and the driver, you can see him right there, he told me he was coming on the roadway. it was so slippery this morning that he put his car on the side of the roadway, and now it's being towed away. he says that he wishes he stayed home. learned a lesson?

>> yes. >> reporter: earlier this evening, a driver got hurt after he lost control on an ice spot. on randolph road near beers mill road. king lee was driving behind him. >> he did a complete almost 360, hit the telephone pole. he was knocked unconscious. his car started driving up the wrong way. >> reporter: back on 270, eric gargas hopes drivers will stay at home or slow down. >> if you have to, slow drive in the morning. >> reporter: you're looking at a live picture of the roadway here off of dorset avenue. you look right there, and it looks like it's unplowed. untreated. but you know what? there is still ice in different parts. so you need to make sure you're careful. good news. montgomery county schools are closed because it could be tough for school buss to drive through these icy streets. live in chevy chase, shomari stone, news4. >> thanks, shomari. the district is already warning that the commute to work could be a slippery one. during a news conference today, the mayor said the salt that the

city uses doesn't work below 22 degrees. on top of that, crews are almost out of salt. the district is $3 million over budget for the season. but the mayor said the city will continue to do whatever is necessary. this is the 25th snow event d.c. has had to deal with since november 21st. if you're trying to get out of town, you'll need to know that a few dozen local flights are already canceled for tomorrow. 40 flights have been grounded at reagan national airport, 21 at dulles. another 11 at bwi marshall. some airlines have waved change fees because of the storm. you're still encouraged to call ahead to check on your flight. rail service closer to normal tomorrow. amtrak still will have limited service between d.c. and new york. but both mark and vre will operate with their full tuesday schedules. there will be some changes to metro service tomorrow. metrorail will operate on a normal weekday schedule.

metrobus will operate on a severe snow service plan you. check route metro's website. and access will be restored beginning at noon tomorrow. the call center will also open at 10:00 a.m. for people who need to make reservations. that layer of ice underneath all the snow can make it very difficult to shovel. tonight a woman died, apparently from a heart attack while shoveling in front of her house. jackie bensen spoke to a neighbor who tried to help. she joins us now from largo. >> reporter: jim, this tragedy shows why it is so important for all of us to help each other out right now. shoveling snow for the third time in seven days. >> i got to catch my breath for a minute. >> reporter: late this afternoon, the hated chore of winter turned deadly for a 60-year-old bowie maryland woman. neighbors heard her husband's cry for help. betty loehmann needs cpr. she didn't hesitate. >> i did mouth-to-mouth on her. and then the other lady down the street, she was doing the

compressions on her. all he was saying is please, bring her back for me. >> reporter: sadly, the woman later died. those who bought snow blowers this year are definitely getting their money's worth out of them. these two bowie teens were doing their best to help their mother clear the driveway. tough going due to the layer of ice under the snow. next door nicole peterson was clearing off her car and worrying about tuesday's commute. >> tomorrow morning, i hope that it's not too icy on the roads. but as cold as it is out here tonight, i think it's going to be pretty slick. >> and even if you did shovel your driveway, clean off your car tonight, expect to see a lot of ice, maybe trouble opening your doors tomorrow morning. jackie bensen, news4. if you have to drive, slow down and keep an eye out for slick spots. we've been to crash after crash caused by slippery roads, including this one in charles county. you can see an suv flipped over on its side into an icy pond near white plains today after

driver hit an icy patch. the driver wasn't hurt. the driver of a tractor-trailer is doing okay tonight after his truck carrying tomatoes overturned and spilled its fuel. it happened about noon on route 50 in atlanta. crews shut down three lanes to get that truck upright and off the road. we're told the driver was taken to a hospital but his injuries are said to be not serious. give you an idea of how cold this winter has been. all of the great lakes are now more than 90% ice covered. that's the most ice cover in 34 years. one researcher says we can expect more freezing and the great lakes could easily break a record for ice cover this week. up in rochester, minnesota, 200 homes now without water because it is so cold, their underground pipes have frozen. plumbing contractors are slammed with calls up there. the waiting lists are stacking up for those in need of somebody thawing out the water pipes. got much more winter storm coverage on the way.

we want to let you know that news4 today will begin early tomorrow morning to give you an update on the cold and on road conditions. we invite you to tune in, beginning at 4:00 a.m. deepening tension between the u.s. and russia tonight because of moscow's involvement in ukraine. not long ago, the pentagon announced it was suspending all exercises and other activities with the russian military. this after russian troops allegedly threatened to seize ukrainian warships if they weren't surrendered. president obama says vladimir putin risks isolation if russian forces don't retreat from ukraine. both the u.s. and other allies are considering severe sanctions. the tensions led to a near 1% drop in the stock market today. tense moments and dramatic testimony on the first day of the trial of oscar pistorius. he is the double amputee, the south african olympian who is accused of killing his girlfriend in his home in south

africa in pretoria, in fact. his neighbor was the first to take the stand today. she testified that she heard what she described as blood curdling screams, and then the sound of gunshots the night that pistorius's girlfriend, reeva steenkamp was killed. pistorius has admitted to killing steenkamp, but he says it was an accident. he mistook her for an intruder. next at 11:00, two men behind bars in maryland tonight. police say they robbed a pregnant woman at gunpoint while she was in labor. >> trying to get to the gym. trying to get your hands on a burger. closed and closed. i'm erika gonzalez. i'll have that story coming up. and a noble service in bitter cold and blowing snow at arlington national cemetery.
