aboard. investigators now say three americans, not four, were on that flight. that includes an infant. the plane is believed to be somewhere between malaysia and vietnam. malaysia airlines lost control with the boeing 777 after two hours after take off. >> after takeoff. some americans are passengers. many of the relatives are a at hotel in beijing waiting for any news to come in. we are getting some indication that the plane has crashed. . nbc news confirming two oil slicks were found but no confirmation on if the plane went down. >> there are two issues that have been raised earlier that the plane landed in india. that's not true. the second point, it found wreckage in an island on the south side of vietnam. >> you heard there the official dismissing reports that parts of the wreckage were found. as of right now that's not rue. but so far the list of passenger names, that hasn't been released

either. we have not learned what states hose americans are from. tom costello is here in the bureau with more about the pilot and plane. >> we know that this pilot was very experienced. 53 years old with 18,000 flying hours. we know that the 777 is a reliable plane a workhorse for long-haul flights. this plane missing was a 777-200 model. an earlier model of the 777 but the plane is 11 1/2 years old or so. the timeline leaving kuala lumpur at 12:40 in the morning. the red-eye flight to beijing. two hours into the flight, flight 370 lost contact with air traffic controllers and we believe very close to vietnamese air space. supposed to arrive in beijing at 6:30 a.m. and nifrt did. the plane now, of course, presumed to have crashed into the ocean.

this only be the second crash involving the 777. the second fatal crash rather. last july there was a flight that crash landed at san francisco international airport. investigators believe pilot error was to blame on that crash. lee people died. this is eerily similar to an air prance plight from brazil to pair that's crashed into the ocean. the atlantic ocean in 2009. all 228 people onboard were killed. investigators believe that the plane's speed sensors on that particular flight iced over when the plane blew into a high-altitude ice storm or a storm. the computers shut down. the pilots became confused and the story ended and the plane stalled and ultimately crashed into the ocean. that was an airbus 330. this is a boeing 777. very different planes. we should also point out this morning aviation experts are pointing out that this plane operates in malaysia. a highly corrosive environment. salt air with the ocean nearby. they will be looking at is

anyone will be charged. a maryland father is behind bars this morning after police say he kidnapped his daughter and may have killed the girl's mother. timothy and his daughter were found 400 miles from her home. the 11-year-old did not appear to be hurt. authorities charged virts with the death of caitlin's mother. the agency teamed up with alexandria police to look into the deaths of nancy dunning, ron kirby and ruth lodato. the police chief confirmed the bullet s used all three scenes were eerily similar. some question if police jumped to the conclusion too quickly. there is a special tip line -- 703-746-6864. we did post that number at nbcwashington.com. the d.c. fire department

will enforce a new requirement in the wake of more than a dozen firefighters arrested. fire chief ellerby saying he will now run background checks on firefighters who live outside of the district. firefighters are required to report any time they are arrested or charged with a rhyme to the department. so many of them live in other jurisdictions. it is very difficult to determine if they are complying with that rule. prosecutors charged d.c. fire fighter dent here with prescription drug fraud in st. mary's county. he is the 13th d.c. fire fighter arrested in the past six months alone. chief ellerby is taking heat from his own department. at a council hearing yesterday, a retiring deputy chief accused him of creating a culture of fear and intimidation. kevin burns says that cloture contributed to firefighters failing to help this man who collapsed outside of the station and later died. burns says they are afraid of being disciplined for breaking

protocol. ellerby says he was, quoted, taken aback, end quote, by the comments and he tried to be fair with discipline in the department. the conservative political action committee wrapped up at national harbor. former speaker of the house gingrich and dr. carson are among those that will address the group later this afternoon. former republican vice presidential candidate sarah palin will close out the convention. the conservative group will hold a straw poll on who they wouldn't run for the white house in 2016. news4's northern skrurnlg chief julie carey is heading to richmond to cover the last day of the commonwealth's legislative session. it is divided right now on whether to expand medicaid eligibility to 400,000 low-income residents. virginia governor terry mcauliffe wants to call a special session on march 24 to pass the state's budget. mccall sieve telling republican leaders he wants them to return home to hear what their constituents say. most oppose medicaid expansion. look for julie carey's report from richmond tonight on news4

heads-up to the metro riders. a popular station will be closed today. metro center station will shut down this weekend as crews update the lighting and signage there. a free shuttle bus will be running between federal rye angle and zbalry place. metro will technically be running until 3:00 in the morning with daylight savings. the trains will be running during the changeover. riders should plan accordingly. the proposed new condo project there georgetown was rejected because of the design. street advisory neighborhood commission and board said the funeral you don't know hits not fit with the feel of georgetown. without it have gone up on m street where the exxon mobil station and mini mart are. d.c. narrows down its list of contributors to work on st. elizabeth campus. they are working to make utility infrastructure improvement. the project is locally funded
