brace yourself as you head outside. it is much colder than it's been in a while. for some of you it feels like it's in the single digits. >> the strong wind outside means thousands are without power right now. transformers blew overnight sending sparks flying into the air. we're live as power lines cover busy roads. we'll show you areas to avoid in a moment. we begin with storm team 4 meteorologist amelia siegel to help you prepare for this cold day ahead. amelia? >> well, we saw our temperatures fall about 35 degrees in only 12 hours. winter has returned in a big way. and it continues to remain breezy, even windy outside. a windy advisory in effect for pretty much everybody until 11:00 a.m. this morning with gusts around 40 miles per hour. we could see some additional

scattered power outages this morni morning. if you drive an suv you'll likely notice the winds as you drive to work this morning. temperatures now in the 20s. 23 in rockville. 27 in washington. when you factor in the winds gusting from about 25 to 40 miles per hour, this is how if feels. feels one degree in hagerstown. it feels 11 in camp springs, feel being 15 in washington. the kids will need the warmest jacket as they get on the bus this morning. in ten minutes, i'll have more on what you can expect hour by hour through these morning hours. >> thank you. check out what one of our crews spotted last night in silver spring. strong winds brought down trees and power lines. this morning, thousands in our area still don't have electricity. here are the latest totals. in virginia, dominion has about 7,300 customers in the dark, down a bit. in d.c. and maryland, pepco is working to get the lights back on for about 1,000 customers. bge has about 4,400 customers

without power. let's go live to news4's megan mcgrath now. she's in laurel where a power outage is making the morning commute a mess there. megan? >> reporter: yeah, we have a major road, routes 198 through laurel, completely shut down in both directions here because of power lines across the roadway. take a look at the traffic signal there. you can see that it also is out. we've got a detour in place. you see the cones across the roadway here, as well as the electronic sign trucks here. we are seeing folks getting a little confused as they come upon this detour here. it's dark, people aren't necess. we've seen plenty of folks stop. they want to make the right-hand turn, they can't. they sit there for a while. we've seen close calls with traffic behind them nearly rearending them. take it easy. if you drive through the area. the detour is between van dusen and 11th street on 198. the problem is downed power lines. in the neighborhood, just behind me here on laurelton drive,

we've got a snapped power pole. it was snapped by the high winds. the lines are down on laurelton. the lines are also down across 198. we have power crews on the scene. they're waiting for some additional equipment before they can actually gibb their work. they're at this point standing by. once they do start, it's going to be several hours before they think -- get things fixed and back up and running. this closure is going to be in place for several more hours this morning. of course, 198 very, very busy route through laurel. people will have to detour through the neighborhood. it's a tight squeeze. the neighborhood streets are not very wide. we're seeing some rather large trucks going through there. take it easy. this is going to be with us for a while. back to you guys in the studio. >> thank you. news4's molette green just learning about more wind damage. she's at the live desk. >> thank you. the strong winds knocked a tree on top of a silver spring home, and that tree has power lines attached to it. right now, montgomery county fire on the scene along sandalwood lane in the 12300

block. it's near new hampshire avenue. firefighters tell us no one hurt when the tree came crashing down. that power crew is headed there to try to work on those power lines. back to you now. >> thanks. 6:03. danella sealock keeping an eye out for backups in first 4 traffic. >> that's right. it's that time of morning. folks traveling inbound to the city starting to see backups. first we'll talk about a chemical spill. here's what's happening. there is a dump truck, it's broken down and is leaking antifreeze on the road. traveling in manassas, look out along godwin at sudley road. what they're doing is waiting on a sand truck on come and get some of the chemical off the roadway. you may see at least one to two lanes blocked in the area. now, as aaron was saying, delays have started. i-95, slow trip in woodbridge as you travel northbound. here's a live look at 123. you see those lanes are pretty packed. of ho looks excellent. here's the drive times -- not terrible, but you are seeing that stop-and-go pattern.

31 minutes from quantico to the capital beltway. >> thank you. 6:04. we now know the identity of the woman killed by a car in loudoun county. 31-year-old jamie rowley of broadlands, virginia, was out for a run yesterday morning when she was hit by that nissan rogue. the accident happened at clayborn parkway and wax pool road in ashburn. vey state police say the 61-year-old driver immediately stopped and began cpr. rowley later died at the hospital. new this morning, firefighters are looking for what sparked a house fire in bowie. prince george's county firefighters say the fire on gueniviere road started before 11:00, not far from annapolis road. the fire caused the second floor of the home to collapse. crews had to knock down walls to reach hot spots in the house. no one was hurt. an elderly temple hills man shoots his wife and then turns the gun on himself. this morning police in prince george's county are trying to figure out what led to the murder/suicide. police went to do a welfare check at a home on winston

street in temple hills yesterday. when they arrived, they found the couple dead. detectives are working to establish a motive. we're following a developing story in new york city. this morning at least six people have died in the explosion that flattened two apartment buildings in east harlem. police say the fiery blast erupted jed about 15 minutes after a neighboring resident reported smelling gas. we're told the death toll could rise. police and firefighters say at least four people are still unaccounted for. 74 people were hurt. students at d.c.'s woodrow wilson high school will head back to class today. a chemical spill inside the wilson aquatic center closed the pool and canceled classes yesterday. early morning swim is canceled today. the pool will not reopen until later today. yesterday, a worker apparently cut a line at the pool which attached to the school. the pool building is attached to the school building. 30 gallons of acid used to treat pool water contaminated the water and the air. we're following a developing story in texas this morning.
