breaking news at 11. a plane full of passengers forced to evacuate after skidding off a runway. the pilot able to abort takeoff at the last minute, possibly saving lives. deep cleaning now under way at a local elementary. classes canceled tomorrow after hundreds of students get sick. and the news4 i-team goes undercover. >> all these ids in my hand are good enough to get you on an airplane. >> sophisticated fake ids not just for teenagers. how local police are cracking down. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> we begin tonight with that breaking news out of philadelphia. right now almost 150 passengers are finally back on track after the plane they were in aborted takeoff tonight at philadelphia international. >> the plane's landing gear collapsed as it was taking off, bringing the nose to the ground

and sending the plane sliding off the runway. people on board had to run from that us airways flight. >> about an hour and a half ago, the passengers and crew boarded a different plane and took off again for ft. lauderdale, florida. listen to what one passenger had to say tonight to our sister station in philly. >> we slammed into the ground, and it was really unexpected. everybody was screaming. somebody said there's a fire, and there was smoke in the back of the plane. and then we had to slide down the inflatable chute. and we ran as far as we go. >> one passenger asked for medical attention, but was not seriously hurt. that plane has yet to be moved from the runway. and one runway is still closed tonight at philadelphia international. school is closed for hundreds of kids in alexandria tomorrow. about 200 students and dozens of teachers and staff at john adams elementary have gotten sick in the last two days. news4's chris lawrence is live

outside the school with more on what is being done to stop the spread of this stomach virus. chris? >> reporter: wendy, number one, you have got to get the sick kids and teachers out of john adams elementary, which they have done. and then you've got to hope that the cleaning crews can kill the virus inside. there is something racing through this alexandria elementary school, and it's not children. cleaners have started going room to room, scrubbing the surfaces where a virus lives. >> yesterday i was like off school, because of the disease. >> did you throw up? >> a lot. >> reporter: these girls had just found out officials were going to shut down their entire school. >> everyone was excited, but we were all kind of worried like is it that bad. >> reporter: bad enough to make nearly 200 kids and a few dozen teachers nausea, dealing with diarrhea and vomiting. >> he has fever, like 100. >> reporter: as this mom tells us about her sick child, the first grader starts coughing.

>> i can say nothing because i'm not sure. >> reporter: norovirus can live on lockers, desks, even doorknobs. anything kids touched could transmit it. that's why parents want the school disinfected. >> every nook and cranny. the cafeteria, the bathrooms, everywhere. >> reporter: and the decision to close the school friday to thoroughly clean it, excellent idea. excellent idea. what's the difference? we had 14 snow days. >> reporter: yeah, in fact school officials are warning parents that if their kids still are sick on sunday, please, please, do not send them back to school on monday. now tomorrow, the city of alexandria has hired an industrial cleaning company. they will be on hand tomorrow to try to thoroughly disinfect the school. live in alexandria, chris lawrence, news4. an arrest tonight in a series of armed robberies and a sexual assault in northeast washington. police tell us 22-year-old gerald canty is the man in these

surveillance videos. he is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint near minnesota avenue northeast. canty is also accused of kidnapping a woman and two girls, forcing them to walk with him by threatening them with a gun. they all managed to escape. a d.c. firefighter could be going to jail for allegedly setting fire to his own car to get insurance money. 27-year-old marcus jackson is charged with arson and fraud in january. police in prince george's county say jackson reported his 2006 dodge charger stolen, and he filed an insurance claim. but police say he set it on fire in capitol heights. jackson is stationed at engine four in northwest d.c. near howard university. this latest arrest adds to a growing list of d.c. firefighters who have had run-ins with the law. this is at least the 14th time since last october that a member of d.c. fire and ems has been arrested. the charges range from dui to domestic violence. this month alone, a lieutenant

was arrested on drug charges in st. mary's county, and another was arrested for sexual assault. thousands of dollars in jewelry and electronics all stolen from a maryland home in a bold break-in. but the thief left something behind that landed him in police custody. news4's darcy spencer tells us about the scam that got him in the door new at 11:00 tonight. >> i realized that the door was broken in. there was glass everywhere. >> reporter: the break-in happened thanksgiving day 2012 when the family was away. >> it was, i guess, kind of hard to sleep that night. >> reporter: the burglar kicked his way into the basement of this burtonsville town house, and then went through dressers belong to barrett goldberg and his mom. >> basically ransacked. >> reporter: the guy got away with thousands of dollars in jewelry. the sentimental value priceless. >> there was a ring that was special to me from my grandmother. it can't be replaced. >> reporter: this break-in shook this family's sense of security.

they immediately went out and got bars on their windows and added this door. it's made of iron, no glass. prosecutors say the thief was dressed like a telephone repairman so he didn't look out of place. >> there was blood. >> reporter: he might have gotten away with it if he hadn't gotten cut. >> mr. hughes most likely snagged his hand up against this broken glass. >> reporter: there was a dna hit from the blood found on the crime scene. it led back to this man, raul hughes. sources say hughes had previously been charged with committing murders in prince george's county, but was acquit order charges dropped every time. this time he is going away. potentially for more than three decades. >> this person is obviously dangerous. and it's nice to know that he is going to go away for a while. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. a story of survival and courage as a store clerk shot in the head during a robbery is speaking from her hospital bed this richmond.

32-year-old kelly wood shot twice at point-blank range at the spotsylvania fas mart saturday. she is speak out despite having a broken jaw, a shattered cheek and a lot of swelling. and she has a message for the investigators who are still looking for the man who caught her. >> catch the guy who did this to me. i want this guy to be put in jail. >> reporter: friends and fas mart coworkers are holding fundraisers to help kelly and her family. they have already raised $5,000. you want a break from the snow? now we might want a break from the wind. this tree came down on some power lines here on 14th street in northeast d.c. just a couple of hours ago. and shut down the street in both directions. but residents in the delray section of alexandria are literally picking up the pieces tonight. take a good look. the wind actually toppl the facade of this apartment complex on to several cars below. it has been a week of extremes. doug, things going to settle down for us?

>> unfortunately, the answer to that is no. at least not over the course of the next couple days. tomorrow will be a lot better. temperatures tonight a little bit on the cold side. that's really the weather story going on across our area. it is going to be that we're in for another cold night tonight. not as cold as last night. the winds are finally relaxing. take a look at the wind gusts around the area. in washington, not reporting any busts. down to the south, winds are really calming quickly. 16 in gaithersburg. still at 22 miles per hour in fredericksburg. most of the area not seeing much in the way of wind. what about the next couple of days? as you mentioned, the whiplash. the weather whiplash continues. we go back up for the weekend, and then right back down with a chance of snow and much colder air as we start next week. we'll talk about that. i'll let you know who gets what as far as snow goes, coming up in a minute. we continue to watch the developing story out of east asia. investigators now say that missing malaysian airlines flight, it sent signals for four hours after it went missing. those signals were sent to a
