with mr. severance about the three murders in alexandria. you may remember there's been a sketch that's been widely circulated in the last few weeks here, a look at the sketch on the left side of your screen and mug shot of charles severance we got today. see that there certainly is some resemblance in these pictures. we've learned from sources that severance was arrested at a library in wheeling, west virginia, and that authorities searched had his hotel room overnight. again, authorities want to talk to him about their investigation here in virginia. nancy dunning, you might remember the wife of ron kirby, was the wife of the sheriff there in alex an dro ya several

years back was murdered. we've learned about that investigation and the death of ron kirby last year found murdered in his home in alexandria and most recently music teacher ruth ann ledado shot while she answered her door just a couple weeks ago. all this information just coming in. we're continuing to dig through here and look for any possible connections. more details may develop. as soon as we get that information we'll bring it from the live desk and post it at www.nbcwashington.com. >> thank you so much. we will continue following t story. to a new homicide in the district. police are looking for four people in connection with a case in southeast d.c. police were called to reports of shots fired on bowen road and sayles place. they found a man dead in the middle of the street. police searched the area all morning for evidence. according to witnesses, four people left the scene in a black hyundai sa nada.

this is the 27th murder in the district this year. this morning people living in the chevy chase area are monitoring their neighborhoods a little closer. around 2:00 this morning, police swarmed a home on frayman near terrace drive about getting reports of gunfire. many of you called in searching for information. megan mcgrath was at the scene and has more for us now. >> reporter: an unusual sight in this chevy chase neighborhood. heavily armed s.w.a.t. teams and armored vehiclesere brought to frayman drive by neighbors who heard a bang. >> a bang bang bang. >> i thought it was an impact hammer, they had been doing some work in the basement. >> reporter: but it wasn't a hammer. it actually was gunfire. responding, police found shell casings outside the house. they also found the car of the homeowner's girlfriend. >> because of that and concerns for potential for domestic violence we called out our

emergency response team that then responded. >> reporter: streets were closed, residents told to stay in their houses. parents dropping kids off at preschool were met by police officers. >> we're trying to get our kid foos school today but looks like the roads are closed. >> reporter: over the course of the next several hours, police made contact with the people inside the house. turns out no one was shot or hurt. investigators are interviewing those involved but at this point it appears there was no intent to harm. no intent to harm, but there are still strict laws about firing a gun in an urban area so charges are still a possibility. in chevy chase, megan mcgrath, news 4. cleaning crews will spend this weekend disinfecting an alexandria medicschool. some stomach virus has 200 sick. that school is closed today. richard jordan has more for us

now. >> reporter: here at john adams elementary on rayburn street the school is closed today. cleaning crews are in the building right now trying to disinfect everything inside the school. give it a scrub down from top to bottom to make sure any signs of this potential norovirus is gone. >> well, every 20 seconds, i felt like throwing up. >> reporter: this girl is better now, but the fourth grader was vomiting and had a stomach ache for the past two days. 200 students and 30 faculty members attending the same school came down with stomach bug. today the school is closed and cleaning crews will be scrubbing down the entire building. >> it will consist of the walls, the ceilings, the toys, the desks, pretty much every aspect of the building. >> reporter: the illness initially appeared in the fourth grade classrooms but the virus spread quickly. thursday 100 students were absent and those who were in class, started getting concerned. >> some of the parents had called yesterday and said the child was vomiting and had

diarrhea, but i haven't seen any in my classroom yet. >> reporter: those who are healthy want to stay that way. most parents are pleased to see the school is taking steps to stop the spread of the stomach virus even if it means another day out of school. >> actually, i really wanted to go to school because we're doing this gymnastic thing in pe. >> i hope we don't get sick. we got a volleyball tournament this weekend. >> reporter: the school plans to open again on monday, but the district says that if any students are not 100%, if they haven't recovered from the illness, they're asking parents no the to send them back. the last thing they want to do is go through this entire cleaning process and have a sick student come back in and contaminate the school all over again. richard jordan, news 4. >> thanks. and the alexandria health department urges parents to make sure their kids wash their hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. if your kids have any stomach related symptoms, keep them home for 24 hours after their symptoms stop before sending them back to school.

well, the clouds are moving out. yes, they are. look up there in the sky and the sun rolling in. nice day to start off the weekend before the return of more winter weather we're hearing. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal is in for tom. good morning. >> good morning. i'm tracking the clouds moving out of the area. it was a cold and cloudy start this morning but at least it wasn't windy like it was yesterday. a live look at the national cathedral, our tower cam. you can see a lot of clouds still around the d.c. metro area, but we head out towards our reston camera, dulles airport here in the back ground, this is the dulles toll road. blue skies as we look that direction. now off toward the west, the clouds push off towards the east. as they do so, our temperatures are going to soar this afternoon. a nice southerly breeze is going to help pump those temperatures up. look at the change here. petersburg now coming in at 52

degrees. loray at 46, washington at 39. these warmer temperatures off to the west will be pushing in to our area. in fact, we're going to hit a high temperature today of 60 degrees. we'll hit that at 5:00 p.m. so while it was a slow start to the day, cold and cloudy, we are in for a spectacular afternoon and evening spring stick around for one more day before winter returns in full force. i'll be talking about our next storm system in about ten minutes. >> come on in and we will hear about that. jury selection under way in the court marshal of a former navy football player accused of sexual assault. prosecutors say joshua tate assaulted a classmate during an off-campus party. she says she was too drunk to remember what happened, but later heard she had sex with several people. tate says the sex was consens l consensu consensual. two other mid shipmen were implicated at first. tate is the only one sticharged.

maryland's senate will vote on a bill to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. if found you would be fined if police busted you with a little pot. supporters held their rally yesterday in annual police ahead of today's vote. maryland's general assembly is considering a vote to legalize marijuana outright. you may have to breathe into one of these to drive if you're busted driving drunk with a kid in your car in maryland. the house of delegates will vote on a bill that toughens drunk driving laws. anyone convicted of transporting a minor under the influence would have to take part in the state's ignition interlock system program. a new on news 4 midday for the first time we're hearing how philadelphia's airport control tower handled the aborted u.s. airways flight. take a listen. >> i see smoke down there. are you still on the runway? >> and now take a look at this cell phone video. this was taken moments after the

flight 1702's landing gear collapsed as it was taking off yesterday. the nose of the plane slammed into the ground and the plane's side -- slid off the runway. the plane was on its way to fort lauderdale. some of those passengers took a new flight there this morning and here's how they described the situation. >> first felt like wind turbulence. you could tell it tipped down. people were screaming. everyone was holding on to their chairs. >> i looked out my window and the engine was smoking so i said, i don't know about everybody else, so i pulled the door, threw it out and got out. >> the crippled plane was removed from the runway early this morning. the national transportation safety board is investigating. a developing story at this hour. search crews are digging through rubble to find five people still ps missing from that building explosion in manhattan. the tools workers are using to reach small spaces buried under

. news 4 live desk where we are staying on top of breaking news at this hour there has been an arrest in the investigation into those three murders high-profile murders that have shaken the acommunity. charles severance happened in wheeling, west virginia, yesterday, picked up on a warrant out of loudoun county, virginia, for possession of a firearm by a felon. at this point want to show you video charles severance appearing in court in west virginia this morning. sources telling news 4 and our

affiliate in wheeling, west virginia, authorities want to talk to charles severance about those three murders in alexandria, virginia. we're talking about ruth ann ladado, ron kirby last year and the murder of nancy dunning years back. these are some images side by side. first the sketch that has been circulating in the alexandria community right next to the mug shot of charles severance that we got today from our affiliate in west virginia. as you can see there is some resemblance here. we learned from sources that severance was arrested at a library in wheeling, west virginia, yesterday afternoon about 2:00 in the afternoon and that a search was done of a hotel room where he apparently was staying that happened overnight. authorities want to talk to him as a part of their investigation. just to make the connectionis fr you here. we learned that alexandria police were looking into the possibility that there may be a connection between the murder of ruth ann ladado back in february, ron kirby in november and nancy dunning, wife of a

former alexandria sheriff from 2003. they found similarities with rifling on some bullets that were connected to these incidents and some other connections as well. we learned our news 4 iteam and several of our reporters are digging into this right now and learning from scott mcfarland that the police department in cumberland,maryland, was contacted by the fbi and by alexandria police and asked to help them with locating charles severance early yesterday morning. they believed that he may have had some connections, some previous ties to the cumberland, maryland, community and they were asked to make that search. they did not find him as a result of that. we are continuing to dig into this with several reporters working this story. as soon as we get more information we will bring that to you. >> thanks. and rescue crews are using sound devices and telescopic cameras searching the pile of rubble from a gas explosion in manhattan. officials there say they are still hoping to find some survivors from this blast that

brought two apartment buildings down on wednesday. crews found the eighth body last night. at least five people are still missing. more than 60 people were hurt in that blast that happened on wednesday in the harlem section of manhattan. the search and recovery mission for malaysian airlines flight 370 getting wider crews are scouring the indian ocean for the jet. this comes after the u.s. officials says the boeing 777 sent signals to a satellite for hours after it went missing. tom costello has the latest. >> reporter: this is video of the malaysian airlines plane that is missing, flying into los angeles last october. a week after it disappeared in southeast asia, u.s. government source says the plane continued transmitting a ping to an orbiting satellite hours after going off radar and cutting communications with air traffic controllers. an investigator say it's increasingly likely the plane did double back making a

left-hand turn flying over malaysia, strait of mall la ka and the indian ocean possibly staying airborne for another four to five hours. that means the plane could have traveled up to 2500 miles in any direction. a vast expanse of the globe that includes the indian ocean. who was piloting the plane and where were they going? malaysian authorities say anything is possible. >> there's been a lot of media speculation today after comments from unnamed u.s. officials that the plane may have traveled for some time after losing contact. as is standard procedure, the investigation team will not publicly release information until it has been properly verified and core bratsed with relevant authorities. >> reporter: the plane may well have flown west. "the uss kid" is moving through the strait while planes and choppers probe the indian ocean. >> based on some new information, that's not necessarily conclusive, but new information, an additional

search area may be opened in the indian ocean and we are consulting with international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy. >> reporter: what no one knows is whether the plane experienced a catastrophic mechanical breakdown, a hijacking, or whether a member of the crew commandeered the plane. >> that was tom costello reporting. president obama is meeting with ireland's prime minister right now. edna kenny had breakfast with vice president biden this morning. the vice president hosted kenny at the naval observatory in honor of st. patrick's day. president obama and the first lady will hold a st. patrick's day reception this evening at the white house. hopefully he'll have a nice day to be here. the president will to entertain the irish prime minister. >> spectacular afternoon. absolutely. it's a little bit breezy outside but this is a good wind, coming out of the south, this is going to help to warm our temperatures today. it was a cold start and a cloudy start, but those clouds, well, they're out of here as we get into the afternoon hours.

temperatures now flirting with that 40 degree mark. washington at 39. here are the winds and you can see they are breezy at about 10 to 15 miles per hour. they're not going to increase, but again it's the wind direction that's helping to warm up our temperatures. latest check of the satellite and radar, this is the cloud cover we dealt with all morning that continuing to push off to the east. back to the west like areas of west virginia you can see clear skies there. that's what we're in for this afternoon. plenty of sunshine and our temperatures warm nicely. get out and enjoy it. 60 for a high in washington. manassas, 58 leesburg. areas like loray, petersburg and charlottesville into the mid 60s today. even for the evening hours, you have plans for your friday night it is going to be comfortable this evening with temperatures generally in the 50s during the evening hours. you can leave that winter jacket at home tonight. just grab the lighter jacket. for tomorrow, if you like the weather today, you'll like our saturday. it's almost the same kind of

setup with clouds around for the morning hours. they'll clear out the for the midday hours. breezy once again and a little bit warmer tomorrow. a high temperature tomorrow of 62 degrees. so another very pleasant day in store. another spring-like day in store. and then we start to see a change in our weather. sunday, a high temperature of 45 degrees. plenty of clouds around throughout the day. so it's noticeably cooler. we will start off dry as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. rain and snow showers will arrive. temperatures will likely fall as we get into sunday evening and overnight. with that we're looking at mainly snow that could lead to slick roads sunday night into monday. keep that in mind for your monday morning commute. of course veronica johnson and doug will be in updating how much snow can fall. monday it is a cold st. patrick's day, high of 34. we're continuing to track snow. that l, that's our storm system.
