tonight. he says he does not want to be extradited to virginia, even though he got arrested on a weapons charge out of loudoun county. severance is 53 years old, and alexandria police are not calling him a murder suspect. >> news4 has been on top of the story all day. we broke the news online, on air and on social media. >> that's right. and tonight we have new details about where charles severance was in the days before his arrest. and we have team coverage from alexandria to west virginia. we begin with news4 shomari stone life at alexandria police headquarters. >> well, good evening. alexandria police are investigating to see ifharles severance has some type of connection, possibly connected to these three unsolved murders going back to 2003. meanwhile, tonight, detectives are at his parents' home. tonight alexandria police are tight-lipped at the home of charles severance' parents in oakton, virginia. neighbors won't talk to me on camera, but one woman said he is a good eccentric guy.

alexandria pd are investigating to see if the 53-year-old is connected to three high profile murders in alexandria over the past ten years. last week, police told us based on forensic evidence the deaths could be the work of one killer. tonight law enforcement sources tell news4 on friday, march 7th, severance drove his car to the national cathedral garage and parked. he then rode his bike to the national assembly. he requested asylum and was turned away. sources also tell us the secret service followed severance back to the cathedral garage, watched him put his bike the car and was turned away. sources say on wednesday, march 12th, alexandria police obtained the surveillance video from the cathedral. that same night the fbi raided severance' home in ashburn. he was arrested in west virginia the next day. and tonight we also drove to the ex-wife of charles severance. she got out of her car, was

walking to her home, and she refused to comment about this latest development. again, alexandria police are not calling him a person of interest or suspect in this case right now. they're waiting for more leads and information. live in alexandria, i'm shomari stone, news4. >> severance is no stranger to a lot of people in alexandria. he went for mayor in 1996 and 2000 as an independent. folks who knew him then say severance was fixated on mental health issues. we found a website registered to a charles severance of oakton, virginia called mentaldisorder.com. it details his legal troubles with the alexandria courts over custody of his son and possession of guns. long-time mayor carrie donnelly says severance used to come to political events dressed in black and focused on that one issue. >> whether you asked a question about a local community question or a local neighborhood question, he would launch into a diatribe about mental health services to juveniles and the prescription of psychotropic

drugs. >> at one point he said alexandria city manager assigned an undercover city police officer just to keep an eye on severance at campaign events. >> news of evidence in the alexandria murders. it's stirring a lot of reaction, especially from the people who knew the three victims. so how do they feel about a possible break in this case? news4's darcy spencer continues our live team coverage with what some of their loved ones are saying tonight. darcy? >> reporter: we're outside the home of ruthanne lodato. she was the woman who was shot and killed after answering a knock at her door. her family members are not home tonight, and at this point are not commenting. wants to know what happened. >> right now i am just grieving ron's death. >> reporter: the widow of murder victim ron kirby doesn't want to speculate about the arrest of a man who may be linked to the killing of her husband and two other victims in alexandria. >> it would be important to know what happened. because i don't know what

happened. all i know is that he is gone. he is dead. and he is not coming back. >> reporter: charles severance has not been charged in connection with any of the three alexandria murders. but police are investigating to see if he had anything to do with the shootings. kirby's widow says she has never seen charles severance. >> this is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. and whoever did it, you know, what can i say? i'm just mortified. >> reporter: we visited severance's own neighborhood where he lived a decade ago in alexandria. few neighbors remember him. yvette butler has lived there less than a year. what's the neighborhood like here? >> oh, nice. it's quiet and fendly. >> reporter: alexandria police are still maintaining a presence outside the home on ridge road drive where music teacher ruthanne lodato was gunned down. neighbors are hoping police have their man. >> we hope that the reports are true. i think that if it bears out,

then it would bring a great sense of relief to the neighborhood and the community. >> reporter: families of the victims waiting for official word before commenting. the niece of murder victim nancy dunning tweeted earlier today hopefully the end is in sight. everyone we spoke to tonight said they will rest a lot easier once someone has been arrested and charged in connection with these killings. reporting live from alexandria, darcy spencer, news4. >> severance is living at this house in ashburn right up until last weekend. neighbors tell news4 the fbi and alexandria police raided the home wednesday night and say agents were there for seven hours. neighbors also say severance rarely left his home. so they took notice when he drove off in his car last sunday. less than 24 hours after investigators searched the home, charles severance was arrested in west virginia on a weapons charge. news4's mark ss mark segraves i

wheeling. >> reporter: this is where he was arrested thursday night, right across the street from the courthouse where he'll appear before a judge monday morning. people here who came in contact with him say he didn't seem like he was a fugitive on the run. surveillance video shows charles severance checking in to the wheeling inn on wednesday afternoon. the hotel clerk says he used his real name and credit card. >> he seemed like a nice guy when he came. in he came in, talked about revolutionary war history and asked about the various sites in wheeling and where to go, asked about where port henry was. >> reporter: he used a maryland driver's license to check into the hotel. but the next day, thursday, a few blocks away at this library, he used a virginia id to get access to this computer station. that same morning, police here in wheeling got a call from the fbi and alexandria police. to be on the lookout for severance. >> so we quickly went over to the hotel. we confirmed the vehicle was there. we were able to determine that mr. severance was not there, and then based off the photograph,
